Earlier this year we reached a significant milestone, achieving a 0.00 Lost Time Injury Frequency rate across all sites for the first time in our company history.

Since this time we’ve gone on to achieve over 2.5 million hours without a lost time injury (our last LTI was April 2012), and we congratulate our staff and subcontractors on their focus in making McNab a safer place to work.

However, it is essential that we remain vigilant in taking our safety to the next level. Over the coming year we need to significantly improve our medical treatment injuries and road safety awareness... our better halves, families and friends deserve nothing less!

RecOgNISINg SAfeTy peRfORMANceMany of our site teams are taking the initiative to recognise the great safety efforts of our staff and subbies on-site. If you or your team are recognising safety efforts, we’d like to hear about it. please contact the HSeQ team with any ideas or feedback.

We recently held our Annual Staff Meeting which is always a great opportunity for me to thank our team for what they do. You know, I’m in the fortunate position of meeting with clients where I get to receive pats on the back, but I can’t really take the credit. It comes down to the fact that we have a team who are putting in the hard yards daily for our clients.

Now in our 16th year, McNab is at a very similar point to being 16 in real life. It is an age where you experience growth and discovery, you are standing on the precipice of adulthood, and asking the all important questions of who you are and where you want to go. you are making decisions that will carve the path of your future. My challenge to staff at our meeting was that this, our 16th year, will be a year of growth and discovery, with two recent highlights showing how we’re doing it:

RepeAT BUSINeSS IN geNeRAL cONSTRUcTIONIn the past two months we’ve completed projects such as UQ’s landmark 6-star-green-star global change Institute, the 15th project for industrial developer Tradecoast central and the latest stage of the Village at coorparoo. It’s also pleasing that during this time we’ve won brand new projects with each of these clients on the back of our performance and the value we’re offering.

In 2013 the adage of ‘you’re only as good as your last job’ has never been truer, and seeing the great work delivered by our teams energises me to do my best each day also.

Michael McNab

rEpEAT BUSinESS COnTinUES TO grOW

EnVirOnMEnTAL CiViL grOWTH Our teams have a real “get it done” attitude in the gas and resource sector which has seen our civil business grow to include a substantial number of new and completed environmental civil projects. Our environmental teams are working in green and brownfield areas throughout remote central Queensland, carrying out a range of environmental stabilisation and rehabilitation works.

McNab have built a reputation as one of the leading industrial builders in Queensland, and are fortunate to have built facilities which house some of the biggest brand names in the country - including Woolworths, Pacific Brands, EB Games, Oztrail, Metcash, ENERGEX, Powerlink, Origin and Reece.

We've continued to refine our methodologies over the past decade to reduce design and construction costs while improving on programme, quality, and cost effective eSD and green Star elements.

After previously completing the first Masters Home Improvement store to open in Queensland (Springfield), 2013 has marked the completion of two more Masters in Rockhampton and Toowoomba. The Toowoomba store was a full turn-key land-sale design and construct project for Masters, and is proving to be a popular retail destination in the garden city.

Work continues on two industrial projects in Brisbane, as well as a series of warehouses in the Surat Basin and Moranbah, with 2014 looking like a strong year in this sector.

Did you know that McNab have been delivering environmental works in Central Queensland for the past two years?

To date, these works have largely consisted of stabilisation, rehabilitation and erosion controls which vary from critical creek crossings, soil amelioration, land flow management, seeding, hydromulching, water treatment, land owner permitting and even fencing.

With our proven in-house team and specialist enviro plant and equipment, McNab are truly geared up to continue delivering value and performance for environmentally conscious clients.

HOW WOULD yOU DeScRIBe yOUR cOMpANy?Tradecoast central is a private development company specialising in industrial and commercial developments. As a small team, we take a hands-on approach and are currently working on the redevelopment of the former Brisbane Airport into a fully-integrated master-planned corporate office park and industrial community.

WHAT DIffeReNTIATeS TRADecOAST ceNTRAL’S DeVeLOpMeNT fROM OTHeR SIMILAR pROjecTS?The Tradecoast central estate is the first industrial estate of its scale in Australia to provide a full turn-key service. We place special emphasis on sustainable development and have developed a project Specific ecologically Sustainable Design (eSD) code that all of our buildings are designed against.

TRADecOAST ceNTRAL HAS eSTABLISHeD gReeN STAR AND OTHeR eSD INITIATIVeS. WHAT’S THe feeDBAck fROM TeNANTS ABOUT THIS? When the project started, there was no formal green Star certification for industrial developments. We recognised the potential benefits of offering sustainable initiatives so we developed our own eSD code. Our clients are really impressed with the quality of the standard inclusions and are able to appreciate the full benefits of each particular initiative once they move in.

It’s the same as the secret to forming the relationship in the first place. Our clients are so varied; for some, it’s the first time their business has been the sole occupier of a building, and others may be multinational tenants on their 15th building. No matter the stage of their business, each client has a very specific idea of how they want to be serviced. We also try to create a community feel within the estate so tenants get to know their neighbours and have access to someone within our team at all times.

WHy DO yOU THINk THe ReLATIONSHIp BeTWeeN McNAB AND TRADecOAST ceNTRAL HAS BeeN SO SUcceSSfUL?Again the communication. We have been working with McNab for seven years over around 15 projects and each has been a success in all facets of delivery. Also, the people make a huge difference. We have a lot of hands-on involvement during construction so ensuring open and honest communication between the site and office teams is paramount. The fact that McNab are relationship-focused aligns with the way we do business and means they are a good fit for Tradecoast central.

TradeCoast Central is one of our major industrial clients with a

relationship spanning seven years on projects in excess of $100 million.

We recently spoke with TradeCoast Central project Director Cassie

Eivers about their company.

Congratulations to the GCI team, with the recent completion of the Global Change Institute (GCI) building at the University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. This $30 million “living building” harvests its own water and power rather than taking from the environment, with the aim to be a zero energy workplace.

The global change Institute building has a range of state-of-the-art sustainability features, and is the first in Australia to use a special ecofriendly concrete from Wagners which contributes significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than standard concrete.

The Hassell designed building came to life after a $15m donation from philanthropist and Wotif founder graeme Wood.

The building was one of the most technically challenging in the company’s history and as the first of its kind in Australia, many new construction techniques were required to build the project. key to the successful delivery of this project was the high levels of partnership and communication between Hassell, McNab and UQ.

The building follows over $80m in projects for UQ since 2001, with our focus now on constructing a building equally dedicated to learning and creativity, a new child care centre at their St Lucia campus.

This year’s Annual Staff Meeting was held in September at a new venue, Cloudland. As always, it was a great opportunity for office and site staff to hear about the exciting opportunities that are ahead of us.

We were challenged by a number of fantastic speakers to grab hold of our values and continue to grow as individuals.

It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work of our staff and recognise a number of our long serving personnel.

joining us in the afternoon was guest speaker, Bruce Sullivan. engaging and entertaining, Bruce spoke to us about how to keep our energy up every day in periods of growth. Rippa!
