The Heart of Our Community

At our 100th Annual Meeting on January 23, 2014, we formally launched our chapel renovation project with the blessing of the beautiful and historic tabernacle from MCH’s early location on

Bradford Avenue. Over the past year, we’ve been seeking input and support from residents, staff and friends in envisioning how we can enhance our two chapels in both beauty and functionality so they can continue to be at the center of our community’s life of faith.

The result of this consultation can be seen in the beautiful rendering shown here, as well as in the plans to enhance the sound system and acoustics, seating and accessibility. We believe these plans honor the history and tradition of our chapels while enriching their beauty and making them more comfortable and useable for our residents.

Inside this issue, we share a history of the chapels that have been at the heart of our community over the past century.

MCH Goes to Italy

It’s official – Milwaukee Catholic Home

is going abroad! In celebration of our

100 Year Anniversary, the organization

is planning a 12-day trip to Italy in

April of 2015. Residents, families and

friends are invited to join us. The trip

will include time spent in Rome, Assisi,

Sienna and Venice.

Since I started as CEO of Milwaukee

Catholic Home over three years

ago, we as an organization have

been putting focus on our Catholic

identity and how that impacts the

daily carrying out of our mission.

In 2012, we commissioned a study

on what it means to be a Catholic

institution serving older adults,

especially in the context of our own

particular history and mission. Since

then, we’ve been reflecting on the

ideas raised in this document, and

have carried on the conversation at

all levels of leadership within the

organization.

This year will see these conversations

bearing their first real and concrete

fruits. I couldn’t be more excited to

share these fruits with you in this

issue of Focus and throughout the

coming year.

The most important sign of our re-

commitment to our Catholic identity

is our decision to renovate our two

chapels, St. Anne’s Chapel in the

Residence and St. Joachim’s Chapel

in the Health and Rehabilitation

Center. Our chapels are vital to our

residents’ well-being in body, mind

and spirit and to our ability to make

Christ present in their lives and the

lives of their families. Our residents

and friends have already embraced

the opportunity to support this

project, and we will continue to

reach out to you for support as we

work towards our fundraising goal.

We’ll also see our conversations

about Catholic identity taking

shape as our Board of Directors

undertakes a strategic planning

process in the year 2014. Our

current strategic planning

document, drafted in 2008, has

served the organization well. It is

now time, however, to re-examine

our long-term goals and lay plans

for the next several years. We are

enthusiastic about this process, and

look forward to creating a focused

vision for our future through the

lens of our Catholic tradition.

100 Years of Chapel HistoryThough Milwaukee Catholic Home has changed in many ways throughout its history, one thing has stayed the same: our chapel has always been at the center of the life of our community.

Since the first MCH location was originally a private home, the chapel was small, but was big enough to accommodate weekly Mass. Anna Cudahy, MCH’s first vice-president, took personal responsibility for the spiritual needs of residents and would send her own automobile to pick up part-time chaplain Fr. Buckley every Sunday.

Milwaukee Catholic Home quickly outgrew the Astor Street location and moved to a new building on Bradford Avenue in 1926. As renovations continued from July through December of 1926, the Carpenter family stepped forward to support the incorporation of a designated chapel into the plans for the building.

The first Mass in the new Sacred Heart Chapel was celebrated on December 3rd, 1926. On January 6th, 1927, Archbishop Sebastian Messmer joined a gathering of over 200 friends and supporters of Milwaukee Catholic Home in dedicating the new location. The Archbishop said Mass in the Sacred Heart Chapel and then blessed each room of the building.

are honored to be able to host Archbishop Jerome Listecki in June for a special Mass and meeting with staff. The Archbishop is aware of the challenges that come with being a Catholic healthcare provider at this time in history, and is reaching out to healthcare institutions throughout southeast Wisconsin. We look forward to building on our strong relationship with the Archdiocese and to the

opportunity for dialogue.

Our annual retreat in the fall will offer a unique opportunity for our residents and staff to experience three days of prayer, reflection, and spiritual direction based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. We are so pleased to have Fr. Larry Gillick SJ, a Milwaukee native, direct the retreat. He is currently the

Director of the Deglman Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Creighton University and offers retreats around the country.

As always, we thank you for your prayers and support as we embark on these new ventures, and look forward to sharing more with you as the year goes on!

Though the chapel was complete, it was still in need of additional furnishings. A committee was organized to collect donations of old jewelry and gemstones to be used in crafting altar vessels, and an organ was donated by Rouselot and Luebtown music company.

When Milwaukee Catholic Home began developing plans for its new building on Prospect Avenue in the 1970s, a large, central chapel was a key part of the design. With the support of Michael Cudahy, grandson of MCH’s first vice-president Anna Cudahy, and his family, the new chapel was completed in 1973. It was named for St. Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose feast day had been celebrated at MCH since its founding.

In the 1990s, with the building of the new Health and Rehabilitation Center, the campus for the first time included a second chapel. The smaller chapel was named for St. Joachim, St. Anne’s husband.

Now, in 2014, the Milwaukee Catholic Home community looks forward to the next phase in the life of our chapels. We are excited to see the St. Anne’s and St. Joachim’s chapels renewed and revitalized so they can continue to be places of spiritual nourishment and meaningful worship for our residents and our community. ■

On March 19, we will honor 38 employees at our annual Service Awards Luncheon. These employees have mile-stone anniversaries working anywhere from 5 to 25 years at MCH. We chose this day because it is a special day: the feast of Saint Joseph, patron saint of the worker. We know Saint Joseph watches over all of the MCH employees and helps to keep them inspired to do the valuable work they do every day no matter what their tenure at MCH.

On her website dedicated to St. Joseph, Beverly Johnson Roberts says that Saint Joseph is the patron saint of ordinary people leading ordinary everyday lives, and that there was

A New Dining Experience for Health and Rehab ResidentsAfter years of preparation, the transformation of the dining program in the Health and Rehabilitation Center is finally complete. Starting in January, residents have been able to enjoy flexible meal times and fresh, cooked-to-order meals from a changing menu.

A lot of changes were necessary to make this happen. Production kitchens were built on each floor, and dining rooms were re-designed with wait staff stations. Three new chefs were hired, all with restaurant experience. Staff schedules and job responsibilities were adjusted.

Chris Reinheimer, Director of Hospitality, says there has been lots of positive feedback from both residents and families. “The food’s hotter, fresher, tastier. They like the choices,” Chris said.

With the new resources available, Chris sees great opportunities in the future to continue to expand residents’ independence and choice. He said that he and his staff will continue to talk with residents to make sure their expectations are being met and exceeded. “The possibilities we have in front of us are pretty enormous,” Chris said. “This was the first step.” ■

I invite you to take a few minutes to observe our extraordinary Milwaukee Catholic Home employees at work. There is no doubt you will see how much they care about serving the residents, no matter what kind of work they do. I think you will easily see why Saint Joseph is an inspired patron of workers, especially at MCH.

You may have heard the old sayings that “employees are an organization’s greatest asset” and “employees can make or break an organization.” I believe that to be true and experience it every day. MCH is as great as it is because of its outstanding employees. Is it any wonder we smile with pride when we hear residents, family members and even other employees say, “MCH employees are so dedicated,” “MCH employees are cheerful and conscientious workers,” “What would we do without them?” And, my absolute favorite, (and yes, I

do say it from time-to-time), “Our employees are special angels.” I truly believe it, too.

I hope you will take a moment or two to say thank you to an MCH employee during this special month of Saint Joseph. Please thank them for coming to work every day to fulfill their personal ministry selflessly while quietly serving the residents and each other. Because like Saint Joseph, they are dedicated, loyal workers who provide wonderful service day in and day out. They truly are Milwaukee Catholic Home’s greatest asset. ■

SPRING INTO WELLNESS HEALTH FAIRPlease join us for our annual health and wellness fair on Thursday, March 20th from 10:00am–4:00pm in the Astor Room. This all-day open

house event offers opportunities for simple health screenings, fitness classes, vendor tables, healthy snacks and fun giveaways. Come and kick-start a healthy spring with us!

TRIP TO CHICAGOResidents, family and friends are invited to join us on May 8th for a bus trip to Chicago. The trip will include a choice of activities, including a production of Henry V at the Chi-cago Shakespeare Theatre at Navy Pier or a visit to the Chicago Art Institute.
