Working with the school ECO team, students have become very aware of the importance of following recycling. Separating food waste from items that could be recycled has been a focus in our lunchroom. Leadership and teamwork enables the school to act as ambassadors for the environment. Our students are learning how to conserve energy and minimize waste to decrease our negative footprint on this earth. McCowan Road Junior Public School opened in 1954. This inner city school is located in east Toronto. The school community is multicultural. Approximately 20% of our students were born outside Canada yet almost half the student population speaks a language other than English as its first language. Students at McCowan Rd speak 25 languages. At McCowan Road Junior Public School our teachers and support staff, in partnership with parents provides a supportive environment which encourages students to be actively and responsibly involved in a balanced curriculum based on the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy. The staff is committed to ongoing professional development to ensure implementation of the Ontario Curriculum. Character Education Character attributes encourage students to set high standards for behaviour, to make decisions that are personally empowering and to create quality relationships. At McCowan Road we focus on one character trait per month. Students and staff work together to discuss and model each attribute. Brainstorming the meaning of the character atribute, listing things they can do to demonstrate the attribute, word webs, and reading books together about people who embody the character attribute are examples of teaching and modelling that occurs every day at school. Students are recognized at monthly assemblies for exemplifying each trait.

Learning as a TeamThe McCowan Road staff is committed to working and learningtogether.  We share strategies and review student achievement as ateam then focus our energies collectively on behalf of our students. Through grade and division meetings or regular staff developmentspecific to Literacy and numeracy, teachers share information andnew resources to enhance student learning.   

LiteracyThe Literacy program continues to emphasize a high level ofcompetency in comprehension and critical thinking to encourageour students to communicate confidently and effectively.  Studentsare encouraged to apply their knowledge in challenging andcomplex ways while they make connections to real life challengesand situations. 

NumeracyOur students are encouraged to develop strong knowledge andskills as well as a positive attitude towards mathematics.  Teachersintegrate problem solving and communication skills throughout allfive strands of mathematics by using authentic learning experiencesthat guide students to develop strong connections betweenmathematics and the real world. 

Co-Curricular ActivitiesMcCowan Road students are fortunate to have the opportunity toparticipate in many activities outside of their classrooms.  Thanks tothe enthusiasm, creativity and expertise of their teachers, studentscan join a variety of clubs, sport teams and musical activities.

What Sets Us Apart

At McCowan Road we believe that All Students Can BeSuccessful.  In response to our students' assessmentresults we continue to focus on differentiated learning andassessment strategies to meet the diverse needs of ourstudents.  Grade and Division teachers meet to discuss andplan effective lessons and units using a variety ofinstructional practices, individual and group tasks andevaluation techniques.  In this manner, we endeavour toprovide our students with alternate or extendedopportunities to demonstrate their learning.

Parent and Community Engagement

At McCowan Road our parents and community have the opportunityto be involved with: - Police Liaison from 43 Division who provide age and gradeappropriate lessons- School Council meets 4 times throughout the year- volunteers for the library, class trips, special class activities- daily communication through agendas- Parenting and Family Literacy Centre- Curriculum Night- Regular support of parents for special functions ( concerts, openhouse)- Lunchroom supervisors- Snack Program co-ordinated by parents
