Function of a circuit breaker

To switch on/off the circuit

Protection against :-

- Over load

- Short circuit

- Earth leakage

To guarantee :-

- The dependability of your installation

- The safety of the end-user and equipment’s

How to choose a breaker ?

Basic Criteria

- Rating ( U , I )

- Breaking capacity

- Number of poles (Neutral distribution system)

- IEC Standard

- Type of Load to be protected :-

(Generator , Motor , Direct current ,………ect.)

Page 9: MCCB & ACB

How to choose a breaker ?

2 - “ Continuity of service “ Criteria

- Selectivity

- Withdrawability

- Maintainability

3 - “ Performing “ Criteria

- Cascading ( limitation of current )

- Reverse feeding without reduction in performance

Page 10: MCCB & ACB

Prescription – Tarek Ismail - 12/04 10

How to choose a breaker ?

4 - “ Comfort “ Criteria

- Simple to install , easy to work with .

- Field installable accessories ( e.g Timers , push buttton , impulse relays , ……ect. In Multi9 products )

- work monitoring and communication .

Page 11: MCCB & ACB

Current Limitation

• The aim :

• To limit the fault current crossing downstream the breaker

• Advantage :

To reduce :

• Electromagnetic effects ( Measurements )

• Mechanical stresses ( Bas bars )

• Thermal effects ( Conductors )

Page 12: MCCB & ACB

Prescription – Tarek Ismail - 12/04 12

Cascading

• Cascading is the use of current limiting capacity of the circuit breaker to permit installation of lower rated and therefore lower cost down stream the breaker .

• Cascading advantages :-

• Reduce C.B cost

• Reduce mechanical effect ( Bas bars )

• Reduce thermal effects ( Cables )

• Reduce electromagnetic effect ( Measuring devices )

Cascading = Reduction of the installation cost

Merlin Gerin solutions :

High technology 3 D metallic material

6 different materials have been intensively tested

Reduction of the safety perimeters to nearly zero (no

or very few ionized gas outside the arc chutes)

Problems of breaking a high current :

High temperature ionized gas (4000°C to 12 000°C)

burning particles projections

Installation constraints

Existing technology

Advantages Drawbacks

Iron CT Enough power to supply the Trip Unit

One CT for every rating due to high saturation Measurement is not accurate

Rogowski toroid Air CT

Unlimited range of measurement High accuracy

Very low power delivered, not able to supply the control unit

Current sensors …(existing solutions)

Functions: 1- Supply the control units 2- Current measurement

Page 36: MCCB & ACB
