Reflection
“The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all towns and places
he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘the harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of
the harvest to send labourers to his harvest’ (Luke 10:2)
We opened the year as a Catholic community of faith educators, both primary and secondary Catholic
schools, gathered around the table united by these words. We made our call to commitment to be
evangelisers like the first disciples, to go out and teach the saving mission of Christ. Our gifts as
educators are not in subject areas but first and foremost as teachers of the Gospel and in furthering the
Gospel of Christ. We were reminded that we are ‘labourers to his harvest’ and our central mission as a
Catholic school is to invite our children into the joy of knowing Christ and his Church.
Opening Mass
This week we gathered as a faith community with our celebrant Fr Fred Basco to officially begin our
school year with God’s abundant blessings calling on the Holy Spirit to bind us together as we all
contribute in our own way building up the life of our Catholic community at McAuley Catholic College. In
doing we all contribute to building the
Kingdom of God. Fr Fred called us all
to learn to love Jesus and make him
known and loved each day in our
world.
HSC High Achievers
We welcomed our HSC High
Achievers from the class of 2016 and
congratulated them on their
outstanding achievements at
assembly this week. They told some
of their story of hard work, dedication,
sacrifice and setting goals to our
students then spoke with Year 12 in
Q&A style format. Set your goals high
in 2017 and aim for the sky!
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Changes to Government regulations relating to school attendance means that family holidays
and travel are no longer considered an exemption from school procedures and any absence, as
a result of a holiday and travel, will be recorded as an approved absence from school. As such,
the duration of these absences will now appear on the student’s report as explained absences.
For absences relating to a medical reason no form is required. Please email or write to the
student’s Year Coordinator and/or Homeroom teacher and provide a medical certificate for an
extended period of time.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Welcome to 2017 School Year at McAuley Catholic College
Welcome back to all our returning students and welcome to our Year 7 and new students and their families. We have
had a smooth start to the year with 2 weeks already gone. However, we have had to contend with some very hot
days. Students are encouraged to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water on these days.
People to Contact - Our Pastoral Structure
Each year at this time we outline the communication process that needs to be followed when making contact with the
College.
PARENT GUIDE for CONTACTING THE COLLEGE
All inquiries are directed to the College Office. Many times the Admin staff can assist you with your inquiry or can
direct you to a staff member. Please give the Administration staff sufficient information so they can direct you to the
appropriate person.
Wellbeing Information
Role of Homeroom Teacher, House Leader and Year Co-ordinator
Homeroom teachers are a very important part of the pastoral structure. The Homeroom Teacher is the teacher primarily responsible for the welfare of each student in his/her Homeroom.
Year Co-ordinator will be responsible for the welfare for the students in their year group. The six Year co-ordinators form a pastoral team and will liaise with Parents, Homeroom Teachers, House Leaders, Leaders of Learning (KLA Co-ordinators), Classroom teachers and College Leadership Team.
The House Leader is the Coordinator of the entire House. They are responsible for building the House Spirit and House system. They work with their House Team comprised of the seven Homeroom Teachers and other teachers allocated to the House.
Brief overview of The House System:
The House System was introduced at McAuley Catholic College in 2004. The aim then and now is to promote a strong sense of
community as well as opportunities for connectedness which will, in turn, promote resilience and a sense of achievement
for all our students.
We continue to promote The House System at McAuley Catholic College as the “umbrella” under which all activities - religious,
academic, pastoral, cultural, community, social, sporting - take place.

Safe on Social Media talks - Students, Staff and Parents
Safe on Social will be presenting to all students on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th
February. We are looking forward to hosting SOS at our College. Below is an brief summary
of who they are and what they cover in their presentations. Please talk to your children about
the content of these talks next week. SOS will be returning to the College in March to present
to staff and parents. The parent talk will be held on Monday 13th March at a time to be
confirmed. Please keep this evening free as the information presented at this talk is relevant
to all families and we encourage as many people to attend as possible.
College Expectations
Students and staff expect to work in a safe, secure and supportive environment. The expectations shown below
ensure all learning spaces are settled and productive. These expectations were reviewed and implemented in 2016
and work in-conjunction with our Mercy values of Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence and Hospitality. The
expectations are displayed in all classrooms and are clearly stated in the student diary.
Kate Thomson, Assistant Principal.
These trigger words can be found on doors and windows throughout the College.
Uniform
The majority of students have been wearing the correct uniform and we thank them for the effort they are making.
Unfortunately some students have returned to school with incorrect uniform items or additions that don’t comply with
our uniform policy. Problems areas are:
Shoes
Grey shorts, Length of skirts
Long Hair out and piercings.
Parents are asked to ensure their children are wearing the correct uniform. New procedures have been implemented
for students who repeatedly offend in the wearing of their uniform. These are outlined in the Student Diary along with
all the uniform requirements.
Student Diary
All students are issued with a diary at the start of each year. The diary is an important learning item that is to be tak-
en to every class every day. Students are to record all homework, assessments, reminders etc in their diary. It is also
used to collect and record Merit Stamps and exits from class eg toilet, library, office, sick bay
FROM THE A.P. MISSION
The Commencement Mass took place on Wednesday and the staff and students gathered to celebrate the year ahead focusing on our College values and the importance developing a relationship with Jesus Christ. The mass brought us together as a faith filled community to celebrate the Eucharist and receive Christ’s presence through Sacred Scripture. Thank you to Fr Fred Basco for celebrating this mass with us. Youth Mass We welcome and encourage all families to gather each month to celebrate our Parish Youth and Family Mass. These will be held at St Mary’s Church and our first mass will be celebrated on Sunday, 26 February at 5pm. We would like the masses to be a celebration for our families and celebrated by the youth. If your child would like to be involved in participating in the readings, music, offertory and parts of the mass please encourage them to see one of our Faith and Action Leaders or myself. Year 7 Reflection Day On Wednesday, 15 February Year 7 will attend their annual Reflection Day The day is based on the theme of Unity and aims to encourage rapport and a sense of belonging with the Year 7 students who have come to McAuley from different primary schools. The day will begin with a Mass at the College then an excursion to the Church, creating connections between the Parish and the College, group activities, morning tea and BBQ lunch at Corcoran Park.
Students are to wear their sports uniform including hats and bring their own water. Students who have special dietary requirements will need to bring their own lunch as well. Please bring your belongings in a small bag as no school books will be required. No permission note is required as the reflection day is covered by the general permission note. However, if you have not returned your General Permission note, ensure this is back to the College by Wednesday. All students are expected to attend what we hope will be a valuable day as we work together to form new bonds and create new beginnings. Year 7 Transitus Retreat Transitus is a new retreat for Year 7 students to grow in their discipleship of Jesus Christ, membership of His Church and to strengthen their transition into Catholic Secondary School. The word transitus was chosen because it is the latin word for passage, crossing, movement over, transition, transit. The retreat will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who want to grow and be supported in their Christian faith. The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating the Eucharist together. The program has been geared to meet the needs of these Year 7 students. The gathering will be an overnight experience that will allow students to build relationships with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share about their faith journey. What: Transitus – a youth retreat for Year 7 students from every Parish school in the Southern Region of the Dio-cese. When: Thursday, 23 March – Friday, 24 March Where: Valla Beach Holiday Park Cost: Nil. All transport, food and accommodation expenses will be met by the Catholic Schools Office. This retreat is for students who:
Regularly attend Mass
Are involved in some other form of Church involvement either at school or in the parish
who show initiative, common sense and maturity
and are seeking to grow in these areas
Are willing to learn more about the Christian faith We can only offer a limited number of places. Any student who would like to be considered is asked to complete the Student Application Form provided by Mrs Warby, Mrs Cummins or available at the front office. Attention should be given to the stated selection criteria. Nominations should be handed to the front office no later than Monday, 27 Feb-ruary . BBQ Trailer The Senior students and staff provide a free BBQ every Friday from 12pm to people in need at the Hub in the New School of Arts in South Grafton. This BBQ is an example of service to our local community upholding the Catholic Social Justice Teachings of Preferential Options for the Poor. As part of our Religious Education program and in line with our Mercy values we teach students that caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes. If you would like to donate or help out in any way to support this program please contact Kathy Warby at the College. Ash Wednesday On Wednesday, 1 March the College will be celebrating Ash Wednesday in the hall at 9.30am. Parents and Carers are most welcome to join this liturgy which marks the beginning of Lent in the Church calendar. The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance. The Church emphasises the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from meat. The purpose of this is to remind us to take stock of our spiritual lives during Lent. As Lent begins, we should set ourselves specific spiritual goals that we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them. Some ways to do this are through prayer, self sacrifice, generosity to the poor or maybe actually doing something or taking some action in our lives. The College will participate in Project Compassion throughout Lent. This is an initiative organised by Caritas. Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and aware-ness-raising appeal brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. All Homerooms will have a project compassion box and students are encouraged to support this. Kathy Warby Assistant Principal Mission.
FROM THE LEADER OF PEDAGOGY
TEACHING AND LEARNING It has been an exceptional and exciting start to the year. We have begun using our new more flexible, vibrant and dynamic learning spaces. These spaces have been designed to invigorate our learners and to create a more co-operative learning space. We have increased the amount of writable spaces and are utilising whiteboard surfaces to encourage students to be more willing to have a go and collaborate in their learning. In B block we have created a team teaching space that is flexible and creates a more student centred learning environment. In Year 9 we have began Project Based Learning within English and HSIE. This is a contemporary teaching practice that utilises a range of best and evidence based practices to enhance student learning. An information night will be held on Wednesday 15th February from 6.30pm. All parents and carers of Year 9 should have received their personalised invitation from their students as part of their first individual assessment task. Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss this work with their child. In curriculum matters it is great to see students embarking on their preliminary course of study. Any students who feel that they need to change their subjects are reminded to speak to their teacher and complete the pink subject selection form. This form requires a parental signature and students are not to change subjects until this form has been processed. Assessment calendars and schedules are now being finalised and students will receive this information shortly. It is important that students apply themselves to all learning activities and use their diaries to keep organised. Louise Maybury Leader of Pedagogy
Welcome back to 2017 from the Mercy Library. This year I will once again be assisted by Mrs Julie Power and Mrs
Pam Moran in running the Library.
Last year we checked our shelves and removed a number of old and outdated non-fiction books, this week Grafton
Rotary picked up the books and they will be sold in their sale in early March at the Community centre. The proceeds
put to towards many worthwhile community projects including literacy programs.
Over the next fortnight I am having each Yr. 7 class for a library lesson and they are being inducted into how to use
the Library. Mark Bellamy, Liberian
LIBRARY NEWS
It is with great excitement that we welcome Year 7 2017.
It is hard to believe that we have already completed two very full and busy weeks. Teachers have been very impressed with the smooth and positive start this cohort has made. Already they are joining sports teams and auditioning for our musical “Bats”. Students are reminded to hand in their locker notes. The first lockers will be handed out next week. Next Wednesday is our Year 7 Reflection Day Day. A note with more details has been sent home and the signed permission note needs to be returned to the office. Students are reminded to wear their sports uniform, apply sunscreen and to bring a bottle of water. Students with special dietary requirements are asked to bring suitable food.
Also next Wednesday, all parents of new students are invited to come in to meet the staff at the Parent Social Evening. This is a very informal meet and greet which starts at 5.30pm with nibbles and refreshments. It is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, chat to other parents and maybe renew old acquaintances. Students are most welcome to attend.
Also coming up on the 21 March is our Year 7 STELLAR day. The Stellar program is an inspirational program run by Southern Cross University that assists students with goal setting and pathways to University. Looking forward to meeting you at the Parent Social Evening. Marita Cummins Year 7 Coordinator

Hospitality – Kitchen Operations is always a popular elective in Stage 6 at McAuley. Not only does it provide the students with the opportunity to obtain a naional vocational qualification, it is also an ATAR eligible course. This qualification provides a pathway for students to work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, hotels, cafes, cafeterias, coffee shops and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools. Our first unit focuses on hygiene and safety in the kitchen whilst developing healthy and delicious recipes. Below are some images of the creative and impressive abilities of the new Year 11 Hospitality students.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back for another wonderful year of sport. Term 1 is always
an extremely busy term. There will be a sport played narly every week, so students will have to keep themselves
informed and get notes back in on time.
Next week on Friday 14th we have our annual swimming carnival. Like every other year we will start the day with the
long distance events from 7:50-8am. They are the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and
200 Individual medley. The main carnival will start for the majority of students at 9:15. It would be very appreciated if
any parents could help out with time keeping, if you could contact the front office and give your name. I will roster
parents on so everyone gets a break. Good luck to all the houses. If any year 7 student has not nominated for the
long distance races they will need to see me as soon as possible.

Committed and competent guitar players are welcome to audition for this ensemble. We are already booked to play
a song at an event at the end of Term 1.
“BATS” the Gothic Horror Musical is almost cast, with final auditions happening
this week.
Ensemble players are needed for “BATS”. The band will consist of wind and brass,
2 violins, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. Rehearsal times are yet to be
decided, so will be published in the next newsletter.
The show will be held towards the end of May. Show dates will be published in the

During the next few weeks, we will be auditioning boys for the McAuley Men’s Choir which will rehearse every 2
weeks. Elective Music students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will be the core of the group, with the help of some members

Hello to all and welcome to 2017. Tania and I are happy to be back for a new and exciting year. We have new ideas and love to give the kids a fresh healthy menu catering for all dietary requirements. However, we cannot do this without your help. As our roster stands at the moment we have 8 ladies to fill 20 spots and 3 of those no longer have any children left at school, but still generously donate their time. We are in desperate need of volunteers. If you could spare a day a month, a week, or a term we would be truly grateful. It's not a long or hard day and its a lot of fun. As you could appreciate it's very difficult to prepare and serve over 500 children on your own. If you can help please get in touch with Tania or I at school, we would love to see you. Thank you in advance. Tracey Hartmann
UNIVERSITY ROADSHOW
Year 12 students have been invited to attend the University Roadshow at South Grafton High School next week. Representatives from Charles Sturt Uni, Southern Cross Uni and the University of New England will be in attendance.
The students will be given important information regarding university courses, university life, accommodation, applying for scholarships and the costs involved for university life so it is highly recommended.
They will also be made aware of the different campuses the universities offer and their specialised courses. Charles Sturt, for example, has a new campus in Port Macquarie that now offers Bachelor of Applied Science ( Outdoor Recreation and Ecotourism ). There are only twenty places available so students need to return their permission note promptly.
