Element # 6: Uses of Geography
• The Uses of Geography is one of the six essential elements of geography. Geography can help us understand the past. It can help explain how physical features developed in the past and why certain events happened the way they did. Geography can also help us explain the present so that we can plan for the future. For example, understanding population trends can help city planners decide whether to build highways or new schools. Knowing what resources are available in an area can help investors decide when and how to develop those resources.
Element # 6: Uses of Geography
• Geography is more than just learning place names. It can help us understand the relationships among groups of people, as well as, between people and their environment. This understanding can help people plan for a better future.
Scenario:
• You are the CEO of McDonalds which feeds 470 million people around the world daily. You have realized that you have almost completely globalized the world since 1940, you have yet to bring McDonalds to Australia, but the restaurant will cost you between $461,000 to $788,500 to just set it up.
Your Task:
• To find out if it is economically logical to set up a McDonalds in Australia and to write a proposal for or against the creation of that McDonalds.
How:
• You are going to look at several maps they include maps on, Population, Economics, and Climate. Are there enough people in one area of Australia to bring in customers? Knowing that it is expensive to ship beef from America, will it be possible to use any local meat produced in Australia? Could you find dairy for cheese or any kind of wheat in order to make the buns? If you can find these elements it may be profitable to set up a McDonalds. Good Luck!
Population Density
Economic Activities ($$ and products made or
