MC-Bauchemie is one of the most prestigious leading companies of building chemical products. The company

group, headquartered in Germany, has over 50 years of history and is active in more than 35 countries: 2,000

employees in over 20 production and distribution facilities around the world.

In Brazil, the company has been active since 2001, with 3 production sites strategically located in non-metropolitan

areas of São Paulo (Vargem Grande Paulista and Santana de Paraíba) and in Pernambuco (Victoria de Santo

Antão). This unit has approximately 300 collaborators working together to set new technological patterns in the

construction market by means of its wide range of products for concrete technology, and building protection,

waterproofing and restoration.

Based on the fact that building should be taken seriously, MC not only develops tailored solutions but also provides

advice, training and support. The company's activities are divided into 4 fields:

• MC for Concrete Industry: This area is specialized in industries such as precast concrete, ready-mixed concrete

and large-sized works, providing solutions for the development of concrete technologies, surface finishing and

work-related common needs.

• MC for Infrastructure & Industry: This area offers products and solutions to other sectors of civil engineering works,

with wide experience in restoration, protection, carbon-fiber reinforcements, waterproofing and industrial flooring.

• MC for Buildings: This area offers modern and innovative solutions for all the construction phases of both

commercial and residential buildings.

• MC for Consumers: This area offers high-end solutions to satisfy most demanding customers: mortars with fitting for

the installation of ceramic and porcelain tiles and tailored covering, joints with perfect finish and in a variety of colors, and

waterproofing solutions for bathrooms, swimming pools and other areas.

In the next years, MC will continue investing in development and growth, extending its presence in Latin America

and expanding into new markets of the region.

Dynamic and feasible: Covering company needs

MC-Bauchemie has ongoing growth and expansion plans. Due to the increasing rise in business transactions,

data volume also expanded and, therefore, it became more difficult to keep it safe and available. Moreover, the

company's sales team members are spread all over Brazil, and sometimes located in remote towns. This is why

online management tools became a must to strengthen and improve the relationships with customers, suppliers

and employees.

With a weak and unreliable contingency plan, data availability was an urgent need. "It was necessary to gain time

and safety while the volume of data kept on growing and also to invest in the computerization of manual

processes, developing other tools to optimize them", Ricardo Santos, IT Coordinator, recalls. "It was required to

reduce the backup time with adequate investment in accordance with MC's budget", he remarks.

The bottleneck created when replicating and storing data was yet another relevant issue. With no effective backup

management, these tasks depended exclusively on the employee performing them, hoping that tape-recorded

data could be read. "The situation turned critical when we lost documentation that hadn't been properly recorded

and was essential for an R&D department," Santos explains. "The backup process was useless, as data could not

be recovered. We had to register everything from scratch, and certainly under a lot of stress, in order to ensure

business continuity."

Before implementing the Arcserve solution, there was no guarantee of high availability for applications and the

company even suffered a one-and-a-half-day downtime situation. "Tape recording such a huge volume of data,

relying on simple copies, was no longer feasible for the reality of the company", Santos states.

After going through a 4-month process where different solutions were evaluated (including tasks such as search

and research, MC-Bauchemie requirement reporting and price assessment), the company decided to acquire

Arcserve UDP Premium. This solution has already been implemented in 30 servers and will soon be applied

to notebooks. Almost 25 terabytes of data are protected. We have a history file that cannot be erased.

Plus 8 terabytes of real data.

As the company already owned Arcserve licenses, environment preparation for UDP was not only fast but also affordable.

With the support of a company's partner, "WM Soluções em Informática", the solution was implemented in just one

weekend and backup processes were completed in record time, which enabled zero impact on production activities.

"Thanks to our excellent relationship with Arcserve, we were aware of the D2D improvement, which would mean just an

upgrade to our current licenses. The validation was completed in approximately 45 days and we noticed that UDP

features a highly-attractive deduplication rate. The investment value and the benefit of knowing Arcserve processes are

also attractive", Santos explains.

Ten months after the implementation, MC's IT department considers that dashboards were a powerful tool that facilitated

processes a good deal. The IT Coordinator believes that "by means of reports, we have access to most vital data,

percentages, statuses and gross total storage space. This is the best way to easily identify our objective and, if necessary,

consider adjustments."

The first success indicator related to the implementation of UDP in MC-Bauchemie was the considerable reduction

in backup size, which meant more free space for storage. "The need for space was reduced so the improvement

was very important. Thanks to the unified management features provided by the tool, it was possible to bring

agents together and control them. This enabled us to save a great deal of time and reduce the necessary

personnel," Santos explains. The tool is practically managed by one professional at the company: the necessary

quota to complete tasks efficiently.

According to the company, downtime situations now almost reach zero level and it is possible to maintain them

within convenient ranges. "UDP positively influenced safety, risk reduction and reliability of protected data:

we are now sure that disk backups are stored in an integral and dynamic way", the Coordinator says. Moreover,

the solution enabled the company to meet SLAs and standards with highly-satisfactory uptime patterns.

the entire company", Ricardo Santos states.
