to pioneer the Wireless World, he had to Make soMe noise.

Latin America was the wireless world frontier. Marcelo Claure had an idea for this great opportunity, but investors didn’t return his calls. He had to sell off almost everything he owned in order to co-found Brightstar. But after moving into the black within the

first year, people heard him loud and clear. Today, Brightstar helps businesses meet the demands of the ever-changing wireless world.

Working with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has helped him make strong connections and boosted his company to reach even greater heights. The USHCC is a strong voice that connects Hispanic Business

Enterprises, Corporate Partners and Local Hispanic Chambers to help businesses succeed. We support Brightstar and the nearly 3,000,000 Hispanic Business Enterprises that make America great.

It takes money to make more money in the world of business. Getting that initial seed is increasingly difficult in the post-recession economy, and more so for minority- and women-owned businesses. According to the National Small Business Association, only 59 percent of small businesses obtain sufficient financing for their needs. Whether it is to start a new business or expand on an existing enterprise, securing capital is a vital component to the success of any business. The current status of the American economy has closed or restricted many traditional outlets to capital. Banks are much more conservative with their lending, investors and venture capitalists are often hesitant to get involved. A recent study found that women business owners were more likely than men to use home equity and personal lines of credit to fund their businesses. Use of these finances are traditionally frowned upon, but have become obvious and easy-to-access options for many business owners or prospective entrepreneurs. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of alternative means to secure funding for small and diverse businesses without resorting to personal lines of credit. Securing capital can be the ticket to taking your business to the next level in 2012. Here are a few ways to think outside the confines of traditional business lending and help your business grow to its potential.

Though financial times have been tough, a variety of business capital options are available to diverse businesses to help them

expand or even get off the ground.

By Caroline Knecht

SBA LoansLoans from the Small Business Administration (SBA) have been a popular choice for small businesses for decades. SBA-backed loans took a sharp hit in the recession, but the Small Business Jobs Act created more funds, higher loan limits, allocations for commercial real estate refinancing, and more opportunities for small businesses. Small businesses can improve their chances for approval with a well-written business plan, personal assets that can be used as collateral. The number of SBA loans is again on the rise, so it’s worth applying even if you have been denied previously or if your business needs have changed.

OrganizationsM/WBEs can often receive capital assistance from business and vocational organizations that they are members of, namely the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The MBDA is opening 30 MBDA Development Centers across the country. These centers can assist you with securing capital through lenders, SBA loans and even grants. Last year, MBCs helped their clients gain access to more than $800 million in financial packages, including working capital, equity investments, and bonding. Turn to your local Chamber of Commerce, as well as the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, National

Additional Resources:• SBA Financing Search - Complete this checklist to quickly find financial resources for your specific needs.

• Microloan finder via the Association for Enterprise Opportunity

• Microloans through Accion

• Individual Development Account direcroty at CFED

Of course, these are not the only capital resources available to diverse business owners, but they are less used among diverse business owners. And while you can’t rely on competitions as a guaranteed source of capital, initiative programs like the Make Mine a Million are worth a look. No matter which options you pursue, make sure that you have a thorough business plan and a feasibility study to convince potential lenders or investors that your business will succeed. Capacity, capital, collateral, conditions and character are often identified as the “Five C’s” of credit analysis, and are key components that prospective lenders will explore.

Black Chamber of Commerce, or the National Women's Chamber of Commerce for additional programs and resources. Also look into your local or state economic development agency to see if there are programs or grants associated with your industry or ethnicity. Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) IDAs work like grants, but rely on special savings accounts which have their deposits matched. Participants are generally of modest financial means and must qualify before enrolling. Funds from IDAs must be used for asset-building purchases and often require participation in financial education classes and other training. A directory of participating programs is available through the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED). Forgivable Loans and GrantsMany cities and even states have forgivable loan programs for small businesses, meaning that the borrowed money does not have to be repaid if certain goals and requirements are met. These loans work very much like grants and are usually offered by state and local agencies to promote job creation. The SBA, state and local agencies may offer or provide information about forgivable loans.

Micro Loans Microloans come from a variety of financing institutions, non-profits and entrepreneurs and can range from $500 to $35000. The maximum term is 6 years and requires some training and business planning. Loans up to $25,000 usually do not require collateral, but some states are ending or cracking down on programs due to popularity and defaults. Microloans have statistically become popular for female business owners who are starting a small operation. Peer and Online LendingWhen all else fails, turn to your peers on the internet. Crowd funding sites have become a popular way to ask for money to start or expand a project. Kickstarter.com, Peerbackers.com, and ProFounder.com, are three of the most well-known peer lending sites. A great way to get an idea going, especially if your business will offer a brand new and innovative product or service. Prosper and Lending Club directly connect investors with borrowers for loans up to $25,000. This tactic is unconventional and not a guarantee, but it can also be a great alternative for those who have run out of more traditional capital acquisition methods.

“Our main focus has always been to provide the customer with exactly what they need, not what we want to sell them.

I think it’s our dedication to that philosophy that has allowed us to continue our growth with every customer.”

ABOuT uSCrescent Construction Services, LLC is a minority (female) owned firm specializing in commercial/industrial commissioning and project management. We have utilized our 50 years of commercial construction experience to engage in more than $1 billion of construction projects over the last 5 years. The majority of this work has been completed in the grocery and retail industry with our involvement extending from engineering assistance well into the maintenance inspection needs of an operating site.

The basis of our management team’s career experience matured in the same retail commercial environment we specialize in today. Our understanding of the problems arising from building defects is not limited to their relation to construction and engineering groups. This also encompasses the effects on operations and safety departments, loss prevention, and in the end a company’s ability to service its customers. By providing cost-effective solutions for keeping buildings within specifications we maintain a positive relationship with our customers’ preferred contractors. An intimate knowledge of the industry enables us to use our extensive resources to ensure our focus is always on the best interests of our customers.

OuR PROCESSOur INVeRT program is the key to providing

each Crescent customer with true third-party quality assurance. INVeRT is a set of clear guidelines based on customer

specifications and years of experience utilized not just to diagnose issues, but also

to offer cost-effective solutions and prevent these same issues in the future. We call our system INVeRT because when customers encounter problems our program is the catalyst that ensures the project changes direction to move away from the issues and towards the solution.

SERVICESDrain Commissioning Programs

As part of the INVeRT system, Crescent has developed a modified PACP program to evaluate lateral drain systems more efficiently. Specific locations of issues

noted during the inspection process are marked, then all problems are categorized and

assigned severity codes. Repair recommendations are made based on Crescent research and customer specifications and any issues requiring repairs are tracked through completion and then re-inspected. By working closely with engineering groups Crescent can assist in eliminating costly onsite corrections caused by changes in code or site planning, as well as provide updated accurate as-built conditions for sites with consistent maintenance issues or those requiring renovation.

Energy Services Utility cost reductions, even modest ones,

can have a tremendous effect on operating budgets. Crescent helps customers locate these reductions with our energy audit program. A recent program developed

for an existing customer has provided the potential for a 500% return on the cost of our

services in the first year for locations considered to be average energy consumers.

Floor Flatness & Floor Levelness (FF/FL) In today’s retail environment no single

building component can have more effect on customer perception of cleanliness than a finished concrete floor. Tens of thousands of dollars spent

on decor will seldom be appreciated when a customer’s first impression

of a site is that of a dirty floor. When that unsightly tile is a result of a poorly finished floor, no amount of stripping and refinishing will correct the problem. Without a floor specification based specifically on your traffic conditions, customer perception and floor tile maintenance costs will never improve.

Project Management Crescent operates under the basic

philosophy that all programs must be managed in a manner that maintains a consistent focus on the customer’s best interests. Customers only receive

functional and financial benefit from inspection data when the issues are

corrected. Commissioning programs must take into account that construction schedules are tight, delays are costly, and accountability is a must. It is extremely important that a commissioning firm retain a working knowledge of industry and customer specific procedures in order to ensure data is procured and conveyed in a timely manner, repairs are scheduled with responsible contractors and their completion is verified, and all issues are reported and tracked to maintain accountability and prevent future occurrences.

Thermography/EIFS InspectionsSince the 1980’s EIFS has been a

standard exterior finish for many US retail buildings. Numerous lawsuits forced building codes to include drainage systems in most wood stud

construction, however there are still many areas where building codes do

not require the use of flashing or sealants for EIFS installations on commercial metal stud or CMU wall construction. In order to function properly as a waterproof insulated exterior wall covering, EIFS must be architecturally designed and installed in a system.

With 15 generating facilities covering 18,000 square miles, KCP&L has served as the full-service energy provider for the Kansas City, Missouri area since its founding in 1882. Supplier diversity has become a major part of the company and its growth in recent years. "For more than 25 years, KCP&L’s Supplier Diversity initiative has opened doors to minority, women-owned and small businesses and helped them to succeed in their endeavors,” says Valerie Coyazo, the Supplier Diversity Manager at KCP&L. Founded on the principle that community is only as strong as the businesses that support it, the supplier diversity program at KCP&L strengthens area businesses in order to help the local community and economy. Supplier diversity at KCP&L goes well beyond just doing business with local diverse businesses; instead KCP&L focuses on forming lasting business relationships that lead to long-term success. As an integral part of the company, supplier diversity initiatives are supported from the top down. "Our CEO Mike Chesser believes it’s important to tap into the power of our region’s diverse supplier base because it strengthens our company and fuels our community’s economy,“ says Ms. Coyazo. One way this is accomplished is through the Light Source program, which pairs a local minority- or women-owned business enterprise (M/WBE) with a senior KCP&L Executive, who serves as a mentor to the business. These executives offer guidance and support to the participating M/WBEs. “These businesses are an essential component of our local economy. That’s why we take the time to mentor and nurture our

Energy leader KCP&L sees real results from its Light Source supplier diversity mentoring program through its participant and supplier Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc.

business partners in the community through KCP&L’s Light Source mentoring program and other various supplier development activities,” notes Ms. Coyazo. The mission statement of the Light Source program states that the program aims “To mentor emerging diverse suppliers in distressed areas of our communities helping them develop, grow, and become viable business partners.” The phrase “Improving life in the communities we serve” is the cornerstone of KCP&L’s Guiding Principles and it is also the backbone of KCP&L’s Light Source program. M/WBEs in the Light Source program are provided training through internal and external programs in the areas of finance, risk management, general business, training, networking and the procurement process. Executives also work with the KCP&L supplier diversity team to connect participants with subject matter experts. “All of our officers and a procurement advocate are assigned at least one supplier to mentor. They assist them in introducing them to the right people in our company to start building a relationship, help them with their business plans, marketing materials, training and introductions outside of our company,” states Ms. Coyazo. These talented participants add a great deal of value to the Light Source Program. “A supplier diversity advocate is only as good as the people that support them, without the top down support and the procurement team support the program would not be as powerful as it is," says Ms. Coyazo.

now serves on the advisory board of Alpha Energy and Electric Inc. due to this collaboration. Through this program, Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. has also had the opportunity to communicate directly with Mike Chesser, Chairman and CEO of Great Plains Energy and KCP&L. “The procurement advocates are dedicated to working with suppliers in our community and to including them in bid opportunities,” says Ms. Coyazo. "Alpha has been introduced to many other companies in the Kansas City area through our program and received contracts through the introductions. They have updated their marketing materials based on feedback from their mentor. They have become more involved in the community and helping others in the community. One of the most important parts of their development is the relationship building with the officers in the company and the people they have been introduced to in the community," adds Ms. Coyazo. Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. has participated in a number of projects with KCP&L over the course of their involvement in the Light Source program. "The first group effort was a project involving the installation and monitoring of energy efficient appliances in the designated Green Impact Zone," notes Ms. Coyazo. Now several additional collaborations have developed between Alpha Energy and Electric Inc. through participation in the Light Source Program. First, Alpha Energy is preparing to install energy smart thermostats in over 1,600 homes in the Kansas City area through KCP&L. Alpha Energy and Electric Inc. is also part of the EPRI Monitoring Project, which includes a grant funded by the United States Department of Energy designated as funding for a SmartGrid project in Kansas City.

M/WBE suppliers can participate in the Light Source Program from one to three years, with approximately 20 diverse businesses participating at a time. Since its creation in 2007, the Light Source Program at KCP&L has provided several diverse businesses with resources and led to improvement. One recent success story is current program participant Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc., a certified SBA 8(a), SDB, MBE, DBE company focused on electrical and energy needs located in Kansas City. Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. provides a variety of services, including installation of energy and electrical systems, energy assessments, solar energy services, and other energy services. Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. is entering its second year in the Light Source program and has benefited greatly from its participation. For Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc., participation in the Light Source program has led to several business opportunities directly in line with their offered services. “We are just thrilled by the opportunities presented to Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. by KCP&L and for our desire to do more for our community and economy,” says Gabriel Okafor, President of Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. Through the Light Source program, Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. is able to continue its mission of “helping in powering economy. “ Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. was partnered with KCP&L Executive Kevin Bryant as their Champion. Mr. Bryant currently serves as the Vice President Investor Relations and Treasurer at KCP&L. Mr. Bryant has provided a great deal of guidance to Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc., showing them not just what they can offer KCP&L as a supplier, but also providing feedback and recommending improvements for the business where needed. Mr. Bryant

Some of the homes involved in the program will receive energy efficient appliances. On October 28, 2011, Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. was included in a media event with KCP&L, the Kansas City Missouri School District, the office of U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II and Brightergy to announce a new initiative. This large collaboration, known as the Solar Array Project, will lead to the installation of 100 kilowatt solar PV panels at the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. as a part of KCP&L's SmartGrid Demonstration project. This solar array is the first of its kind in the school district and will be the largest solar array in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Excess electricity generated from this project will be fed back into the electrical grid system. Collaborations like these are just one reason why Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. is so pleased to be a part of the Light Source Program at KCP&L. Though Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. has been involved in the Light Source program for almost two years, they still have several goals to accomplish while involved with the program, according to Mr. Okafor. “Our expectations are to continue to build and enhance our business systems and processes, cultivate a very strong relationship with an industry leader like KCP&L and expand our portfolio of renewable energy projects.”

Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. is especially interested in projects that use solar, wind and other non-traditional energy sources. “This relationship, working with an industry leader of the caliber of KCP&L, will help us

meet our goals and empower our community and economy” says Mr. Okafor. Collaboration between suppliers and KCP&L does not end upon completion of the program, "When a supplier graduates from our program they go into our light source Alumni program, they are no longer mentored by an executive of the company. But, they can call the supplier diversity manager, the procurement advocate or the executive any time they like after the program," adds Ms. Coyazo. Success stories like that of Alpha Energy and Electric, Inc. serve as a great source of happiness and pride for Ms. Coyazo and other members of the KCP&L team. “I am proud to be able to assist diverse suppliers daily and it makes me feel good when I go home at night knowing that I helped a supplier by introducing them to someone inside or outside our company and hopefully making a difference for them," says Ms. Coyazo. “I am very proud of our procurement team, and several procurement advocates have received awards from the Mid-America Minority Supplier Development Council (MAMSDC) for their work with diverse suppliers.” Thanks to the Light Source program and other inclusion initiatives, KCP&L has exceeded its diverse spend financial goals in each of the last three years and become a prime example of a successful supplier diversity program. The future looks very bright for KCP&L and the businesses involved in its supplier diversity initiatives.

Sp tlightSupplier Diversity

McCain Foods was founded in Florenceville, New Brunswick,

Canada in 1957 by Harrison and Wallace McCain. The company is the largest potato processor in the world, and a leader in frozen food production as well. With 50 factories around the world, it’s processing facilities are found on six continents and generates worldwide sales of $6 billion CDN.

McCain has been a global supplier to McDonald’s restaurants for over 30 years. Today, the McCain/McDonald’s relationship still runs deep: McCain Foods is the largest worldwide supplier of French fries to McDonald’s. In fact, one in every three French fries consumed around the world are from McCain.

McCain has a history of working with minority growers. According to Calvin Eakins, McCain’s supplier diversity manager, the company relies on its Potato Farmers Initiative to locate minority white and sweet potato growers.

Calvin Eakins has a lot of experience in supplier diversity. Before being hired by McCain to grow their diversity spend and increase their exposure to diversity suppliers, Calvin worked in supplier development and diversity at ConAgra Foods in Omaha, NE and served as the Board Chairman of the Great Plains MSDC.

Currently, minority growers make-up 50% of the company’s diversity spend. McCain’s goal is to increase its minority supplier spend to 5% over the next two to three years.

Eakins has found that there is some resistance among minority growers to become certified, which is part of the

criteria McCain uses to evaluate them as suppliers. The growers believe that companies that work with growers, like McCain, ConAgra, and Simplot, will contract the acreage to grow their products without their having to make the disclosures essential for certification. Eakins is hoping that assistance from the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) will help make the growers aware of the benefits and the value of certification.

Outside of the grower population, there are many other minority suppliers who have become familiar with McCain Foods and are becoming more interested in doing business with them.

Jackie Dyess, President of Inter-City Supply Co. wanted to know more about McCain Foods and was convinced there had to be an opportunity for an Inter-City-McCain collaboration.

“Afterall, toilet paper is an essential supply and Inter-City has the best toilet paper available,” said Jackie Dyess. “I had to demonstrate to McCain how it could save money and gain efficiencies.

Although our first approach to Calvin was unsuccessful, we did not get discouraged.”

Inter-City went out to McCain’s plants and interviewed their people. When they felt that had enough information about McCain and its needs, they presented the company with a detailed budget. To make sure they fulfill their contract on time and on budget, Inter-City created three distribution centers that gave them valuable proximity to McCain plants.

Persistence, coupled with research, knowledge gathering and infrastructure improvements allowed Inter-City to land a contract with McCain Foods and make it a success.

“It’s crucial that a company does its homework and studies its potential customer to determine how best to provide what a company needs,” notes Bruce Fleisher of Inter-City Supply. “Calvin opened doors at McCain so we could talk to staff and get the information we needed to create an effective plan.”

“That’s the kind of thinking I expect MBEs to bring to the table,” says Eakins. “Bring ideas; be creative. Do more than just tell me what your goods and prices are. Jackie Dyess was the first MBE to approach me with ideas about working with McCain when I joined the Chicago MSDC Council.”

As Eakins will admit, timing is everything and he encourages MBE’s to be patient. But rest assured, supplier diversity at McCain Foods has the unequivocal support of senior management.

Eakins has found that there is some resistance among minority growers to

become certified, which is part of the criteria McCain uses to evaluate them as suppliers.

“I had to demonstrate to McCain how it could save money and gain efficiencies. Although our first approach to Calvin was unsuccessful, we did not get discouraged.”

Inter-City went out to McCain’s plants and interviewed their people. When they felt that they had enough information about McCain and its needs, they presented the company with a detailed budget. To make sure they fulfilled their contract on timeand on budget, Inter-City created three distribution centers that gave them valuable proximity to McCain plants.

McCain Foods Supplier Diversity Program: More than Skin Deep

Outside of the grower population, there are many other minority suppliers who have become familiar with McCain Foods and are becoming more interested in doing business with them.

Jackie Dyess, President of Inter-City Supply Co. wanted to know more about McCain Foods and was convinced there had to be an opportunity for an Inter-City-McCain collaboration.

“Afterall, toilet paper is an essential supply and Inter-City has the best toilet paper available,” said Jackie Dyess.

PERSPECTIVE FOr

IN2012STAFFING2012 is just around the corner. Before companies move forward, it is important

during this final quarter of 2011 to become positioned for growth. Growth is contingent upon an informed, educated, committed and engaged workforce.

For small businesses this may require a change in staffing strategy. If your cash flow and income projections are strong - it may be time to invest

in a real team - persons to whom you can begin delegating significant components of your strategy to.

This isn’t an easy task if you’ve grown accustomed to operating on a shoestring budget that only accommodates temporary staffing, contract labor, work-for-hire resources or college interns – persons who have no real stake in long-term operational growth or performance goals. If you’re ready to change this paradigm, 2012 may be the year that you finally invest in permanent labor and get some real help! If this is you, you’ve picked a great time to add staff because you have a tremendous pool of talent to draw from. You not only have access to the greatest resource pool of talented and qualified displaced workers in over a decade, you also have access to an extensive resource pool of disgruntled, overworked, underappreciated employed workers too. Both of these resource pools are equally attractive because displaced and employed talent both understand how to operate in an inter-networked global economy and how to rely on social networking tools to communicate with colleagues all around the globe. Even further, they both know how to collaborate and work in teams, how to manage company resources as if they are personal assets and how to launch products. They’re dying for the opportunity to master new tasks and to foster transformative changes for new employers. The problem is they don’t know where to find you because they’ve just grown accustomed to shopping larger companies. Most of them have no idea how to seek out someone like you. You have the benefit of hindsight working in your favor – you can avoid corporate missteps of the past and completely redefine the employee value propositions of the future without experiencing unnecessary inflated staffing growth only to migrate toward the organizational reengineering practices witnessed this past decade. Mass elimination of entire departments and divisions through outsourcing, down-sizing, right-sizing and mergers at an accelerated pace need not be your fate. Instead, you can opt to grow at a steady pace by hiring a balanced number of permanent and temporary staff out the gate and thereby avoid the folly of doubling and tripling employee workloads without mercy after unnecessary displacing workers later on.

While many former employees became entrepreneurs like you many prefer to not assume the risk or responsibility associated with business ownership – this doesn’t make them bad employee prospects – on the contrary, these are the best ones because they won’t fight you for control of anything. They’ll just show up every day and do good work. Who could ask for more? Today’s talent are looking for legitimate companies to associate with where, if given the chance, they can channel creativity energy, skills and training. You need only select the persons who are the perfect fit for your team.

?

Leverage 2012 to position your company for exponential growth through a talent base who can take you where you need to go and use this final quarter of the year to firmly establish your strategy for next year. Don’t forget to determine how you’ll handle employee raises, incentives, bonuses, training, and other necessary resources remembering to be sensitive to your prospective new team despite the fact that (for the most part) they may have been neglected by current and former employers. This is your opportunity to flex your ethical muscles and stand apart. Don’t repeat the same insensitive practices advocated by your corporate counterparts by lowballing salary offers and by not providing benefits and/or other incentives. Be considerate of your new team – truly invest in them without compromising your budget and reap the rewards of gaining a solidly qualified and loyal employee base that will not only pour their lives into your company but will take you to the next level. Have fun watching your business flourish! Happy planning!

One of the biggest challenges that MBEs face is understanding where they fit in the

corporate supply chain.

BY: HERMANN SCHNEIDER

Where doyou fit in theCorporate Supply Chain?

36 MBEConnect Profiles I Winter Issue

MBECONNECT PROFILESWinter 2011 Issue

Page 37: MBEConnect Profiles Magazine Volume 1, Issue 4

Like many MBEs, I have spent hundreds of hours filling out registration forms on supplier diversity websites, providing the corporations with the required information and telling them who we were and how they could buy our products and services. I have also sent many emails that outline why we are such a good fit for them. Unbelievable, but the phone never rang, not once. Sound familiar? I’m here to tell you that you are not alone.

Not to discourage anyone, but there are some realities that all small diverse businesses need to deal with. During the 2010 NMSDC conference in Miami, I had the opportunity to attend a roundtable that was hosted by a large corporate member. They clearly believe in supplier diversity and wanted an honest discussion about the myths, the challenges and the opportunities. The facilitator opened with a Good News/Bad News scenario. “The good news is our corporation purchases $50 billion dollars of goods and services each year; the bad news is we already have excellent and competitive suppliers providing us with $50 billion dollars in goods and services.” He then went on to say; “this is not a social entitlement program, so with that out of way; why should we do business with you?”

All of sudden our MBE certification didn’t seem so important. The facilitator drove home the point that we needed to find a way to be marketable, profitable and sustainable. Tough love? Maybe. But this is the reality of today’s business climate. It is important to align our visions and goals with the corporations while

providing value to them. We need to understand where we fit in the supply chain and whether we are really ready to be a prime supplier. For many of us the better fit is as a Tier 2 or even a Tier 3 supplier.

We need to ask ourselves if we can minimize or eliminate a problem or challenge, the corporation has. A quick look at the corporations’ website often explains what they are looking for. They often list the commodities and certifications or requirements. So are you asking yourself the right questions? How are you adding value? We must all be prepared to answer the question: why should they buy from us?

The unfortunate reality is that most corporations are currently under mandates to shrink their supply chain or eliminate vendors. For new suppliers this means we must be able to add value at multiple points of the supply chain. Many MBEs don’t have the scale or capacity to occupy multiple points of the supply chain. In order to work with corporations, we must be able to provide scale and service multiple plants, sites, states, and regions. We need to understand what the term “Global Footprint” means. Most importantly, we need to have all the necessary quality certifications and/or regulatory requirements. With this said, for many MBEs it makes sense to look for opportunities as a Tier 2 or Tier 3 supplier to a Tier 1 supplier. At the end of the day, you are still providing products and services to the corporation. Let’s face it, a contract is a contract whether it is as a Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier 3.

Where do

MBECONNECT PROFILESWinter 2011 Issue

37 MBEConnect Profiles I Winter Issue

Page 38: MBEConnect Profiles Magazine Volume 1, Issue 4

To improve both sides of this situation we need some help from the corporations, also. I started this article by mentioning all my failed efforts with filling out supplier registrations and questionnaires. It is always the first directive I hear at any panel discussion, trade fair or networking event. We are instructed to go to the corporation’s website and fill out the potential supplier registration because that is where sourcing people find new suppliers. The unfortunate truth is that most buyers don’t have the time to search the database for a new supplier. I realize the need to have us register but maybe the corporations can get together to have one site, one form, a one-time registration, which feeds all of their databases. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to register just once and then direct our info to the companies where we see a potential match?

Supplier Diversity managers are inundated every day with phone calls and emails. I have heard many diversity managers say they are frustrated with all the small diverse companies, which continually reach out to do business and are not well prepared. Let’s put an end to the frustration. Many corporations have launched mentorship programs to develop diverse suppliers. These corporations take an active role in guiding, educating and providing the tools necessary to add value and be competitive.

So, where do you fit in the supply chain? As a Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier 3 supplier? In order to be considered for opportunities, we must be ready to answer the question and demonstrate how we add value. We also need to encourage the corporations to support

the development of small diverse businesses. The solution to creating marketable, profitable and sustainable diverse companies can only be achieved by creating partnerships between the corporations and MBEs. After all, the best solutions are partnerships where everyone is invested in the outcome.

to America’s corporations. It is because of WBENC and GWBC’s commitment and expertise to apply the highest possible certification standards in the industry so that our corporate members and partners have access to quality WBEs nationally and regionally. WBE certification is known and accepted throughout corporate America and is the benchmark for all other supplier diversity programs.

Our Certified WBEs | Currently, GWBC® has 900+ certified WBEs in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina who are benefiting from certification, educational information and networking opportunities with major corporations, government agencies and fellow WBEs.

PROGRAMSGWBC®’s guiding principles include investing in the people and the community. It’s important that our programs and events such as our Power of Partnering Marketplace provide a return on investment to our corporate members and equip our certified WBEs with educational business tools that provide them with a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Our certified WBEs have access to several education programs and scholarship opportunities, including The Dorothy B. Brothers Scholarship and Tuck programs through WBENC and the FastTrac program through the Kaufman Foundation.

Through the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), CertifiedPurchasing Supply Management (CPSM) and Certified Professional Supplier Diversity (CPSD) can earn continuous education hours (CEH) by attending our learning labs and Lunch & Learns.

GREATER GIVING INFORMATIONThe GWBC Greater Giving program continues the mission of investing in the communities where our WBEs and corporate members live and work. We kicked off this year’s program by partnering with Newell Rubbermaid for the United Way Shoebox program in Atlanta, Georgia and Lowe’s 20th Anniversary Women’s Build, Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte, NC. In 2012, we will expand our Greater Giving program in all three states of the GWBC region.

Mentor Protégé Program The Greater Women’s Business Council Mentor Protégé Program was developed in 2008 to help certified women-owned businesses move to the next level of success.

The program is unique as WBEs empower fellow WBEs in the development of their business through one on one contact, bi-monthly meetings and constant evaluation.

With a focused yet flexible framework, mentoring teams are able to follow an EASI process. EASI is a four step process that enables mentoring teams to track the protégé’s process during the mentoring cycle. It’s EASI for our protégé’s to prepare for the next level of their business as they Explore, Accept, Solve and Implement their strategies for success!

As the mentor guides the protégé through the EASI process, it is the goal of the program to enable participants to develop an internal resource for future business partnerships and reposition companies to optimize opportunities for growth.

GWBC’s commitment to developing women business enterprises is the cornerstone of its existence. The staff of GWBC and the Mentor Protégé Program Committee wish participants business success that will go beyond the scope of the program.

FastTrac® Program (Scholarship Program)The FastTrac program is a practical, hands-on, scholarship program designed to help entrepreneurs hone the skills needed to create, manage, and grow a successful business. But FastTrac participants don’t just learn about business; they live it. They work on their own business ideas or budding ventures throughout the program. Through the FastTrac Program, WBEs move from working in their business to working on their business. Visit http://fasttrac.org/ for FastTrac Program in your area.

Our Corporate Members | GWBC® is partnered with dozens of major companies who are committed to providing the financial foundation to make education, training and the standardization of national certification a reality, ultimately increasing opportunities for women business enterprises in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. GWBC’s corporate members help implement new programs and strengthen existing programs that provide opportunities for WBEs. These corporations are the driving force behind GWBC® and have partnered with women’s business organizations throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and WBEs who represent the strengths, needs, and challenges of women-owned businesses. A list of our corporate members is available online.
