FUEL REQUIREMENTS, EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

Fuel Requirements Engine Exhaust GasPrecautions(Carbon Monoxide)

Operating Precautions forCatalytic Converters

Use only unleaded petrol with an octane rat-ing of at least 95 (Research Octane Num-ber) conforming to DIN 51 607.You may use unleaded petrol with an octane rating of at least 90 (Research Octane Num-ber) at slightly reduced performance.

WARNING!Never use leaded petrol in your Xedos Vehicle if it has a catalytic converter. The lead will accumulateon the oxygen sensor and the cata-lyst within the converter. This willresult in a malfunction of the emis-sion control system, causing poorperformance. If you believe the engine is not func-tioning properly, consult an Autho-rised Xedos Dealer as soon as possible.

Engine exhaust gases contain carbonmonoxide. Though colourless and odour-less, it is dangerous, even lethal, if inhaled.• Carbon monoxide can be present with

other exhaust fumes. Therefore, if you smell exhaust fumes of any kind insideyour vehicle, have it inspected and repaired immediately by an Authorised Xedos dealer. Do not drive with exhaustfumes present, but if you must, do so onlywith all windows fully open.

• Do not operate the engine in confined orclosed areas (such as garages) any morethan is necessary to move the vehi-cle to and from the area.

• When the vehicle is stopped in an uncon-fined area for more than a short time withthe engine running, adjust the heating orcooling system to draw outside air intothe vehicle.

• Never sit in a parked or stopped vehicle for any length of time with the enginerunning.

Your vehicle is equipped with a catalytic con-verter emission control device. Therefore, the following precautions must beobserved:

• Use only UNLEADED FUEL• Do not park the vehicle over or near flam-

mable objects, such as dry grass. Under certain conditions, they could be ignitedby a hot exhaust system.

• Do not operate the vehicle when there aresigns of engine malfunction, such as mis-fire or other noticeable loss of per-formance.

• Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Ex-amples of misuse are coasting with theignition off and descending steep gradesin gear with the ignition off.

• Do not operate the engine at high idlespeeds for extended periods (5 minutesor more).

• Do not modify or tamper with any part ofthe engine or emission control system. Allinspections and adjustments must be made by a qualified technician.

Page 3: mazda xedos 6

Failure to observe the above precautions could result in damage to the catalytic con-verter and to your vehicle.

BEFORE ENTERING VEHICLE• Be sure that all windows, outside mir-

ror(s), and outside lights are clean.• Check the condition of the tyres.• Check under the vehicle for any sign of

leaks.• Be sure there are no obstacles behind

you if you intend to back up.

Necessary inspectionsFluid levels, such as engine oil, engine cool-ant, brake/clutch fluid, and washer fluid, should be checked daily, weekly, or when-ever you refuel, depending on the fluid. Fur-ther details are provided in Maintenance, Section 7.

BEFORE STARTING• Close all doors.• Position the seat so that all controls are

easily reached.• Adjust the inside and outside mirrors.• Fasten seat belts of occupied seats.• Be sure that all lights work.• check all gauges.• Check the operation of warning lights

when the ignition switch is turned to theON(II) position.

• Release the parking brake and make sure the (parking*) brake warning light goes out.

For safe operation, be sure that you arefamiliar with your vehicle and its equipment.

Page 4: mazda xedos 6

No special running-in period is needed. But by following a few simple precautions for the first 1,000km (600 miles), you may add tothe performance, economy, and life of yourvehicle.

• Do not race the engine.• Do not maintain a single speed for long

periods of time, either fast or slow.• Avoid hard stops, except in emergencies,

to allow the brakes to seat properly.• Avoid full-throttle starts.

Your vehicle’s fuel economy is mainly de-pendent on your style of driving: how youdrive, where you drive, and when you drive. These have an effect on how many kilome-tres (miles) you can get from a litre (gallon)of fuel. To operate your vehicle as econom-ically as possible, use the following drivingsuggestions to help save money in both fueland repairs:

• Avoid lengthy warm-up idling. Once the engine is running smoothly, begin driving-but gently. Remember, though, that on cold days, warm-up may take alittle longer.

• Save fuel by avoiding fast starts.• Keep the engine in tune and follow the

recommended periodic maintenanceschedule. This will increase the life of allparts and lower operating costs.

• Use the air conditioner only whennecessary.

• Slow down when driving on rough roads.• For longer tyre life and better fual econ-

omy, always keep the tyres inflated to thecorrect pressures.

• Maintain a safe distance from other vehi-cles to avoid sudden stops. This will re-duce wear on brake linings and pads andsave fuel because extra fuel is required to accelerate back to driving speed.

• Do not carry unnecessary weight in thevehicle.

• Do not rest your foot on the brake pedalwhile driving. this can cause needlesswear, possible damage to the brakes, and poor fuel economy.

• Improper wheel alignment cause thetyres to roll at excessive angles, whichresults in faster tyre wear. It takes morepower to overcome this improper align-ment, which wastes fuel.

• Open windows at high speeds can less-en fuel economy.

• Fuel economy is less in cross winds andheadwinds. To help offset some of thisloss, slow down when driving in these conditions.

Keeping a vehicle in good operating condi-tion is important for both economy and safe-ty. Therefore, have an Authorised XedosDealer perform scheduled inspections and

maintenance.

CAUTIONNever turn off the engine to coast down hills. The power steering and powerbrakes will not function without the en-gine running. Instead, downshift to anappropriate gear for engine brakingeffect.

When hazardous driving is encountered be-cause of water, snow, ice, mud, sand, orsimilar hazard, follow these suggestions.• Drive cautiously and allow extra distance

for braking.• Avoid sudden movements in braking or

steering.• When braking, depress the brake pedal

with a light up-and-down motion until thevehicle is stopped.

• If stalled in snow, mud, or sand, use sec-ond gear and accelerate slowly. Lowgear may be used, if necessary. Acceler-ate slowly to avoid spinning the frontwheels.

• Use sand, rock salt, tyre chains or othernonslip material under the fromnt wheelsto provide traction when stalled in ice, snow, or mud.

WARNING!On slippery surfaces, do not down-shift inot 1 (First) with a manualtransaxle or, L (Low) with an auto-matic transaxle. This may cause skidding.

NOTEUse snow chains only on front wheels.

ECONOMICAL OPERATION, SPECIAL DRIVING CONDITIONS

Hazardous Driving

Page 6: mazda xedos 6

If it is necessary to rock the vehicle to freeit from snow, sand, or mud, move the selec-tor lever of an automatic transaxle from D(Drive) to R (Reverse) in a repeat patternwhile depressing the accelerator gently. Witha manual transaxle, move the shift lever backand forth from 1 (First) to R (Reverse). Donot race the engine. if you are still stuck af-ter a couple of minutes of rocking, have the ve-hicle pulled out to avoid engine overheatingand possible danage to the transaxle.

CAUTIONProlonged rocking may cause engineoverheating, transaxle damage or fail-ure, and tyre damage.

WARNING!Do not spin the wheels too much, because increased wear and dam-age to the drive components may result.

• We recommend that you carry emergen-cy equipment. Some things you might in-clude are tyre chains, a window scraper,a bag of sand or salt, flares, a small shov-el and jump leads.

• Make sure you have sufficient ethylene-glycol coolant in the radiator.

• Check the battery condition and cables.Cold temperatures reduce the capacityof any battery, so it must be in top shapeto provide enough winter starting power.

• Make sure the engine oil viscosity is suit-able for cold weather.

• Check the ignition system for loose con-nections and damage.

• Use antifreeze-formulated washer fluid.(Do not use engine coolant antifreeze.)

• Do not use the parking brake when itmight freeze. When parking, shift to P(Park) with on an automatic transaxle, andto 1 (First) or R (Reverse) on a manualtransaxle and block the rear wheels.

SNOW TYRESWhen snow tyres are used, select the size and construction specified on thetyre pressure label. It is strongly recom-mended that snow tyres be used on allfour wheels, or ppor handling may re-sult. Please also note the inflation pressurerecommended from the tyre maker.

WARNING!Snow tyres should be equivalent in sizeand type to the vehicle’s stan-dard tyres. Otherwise, the safetyand handling of your vehicle may beaffected.

NOTEDo not install studded tyres without firstchecking local regulations fpr possible res-trictions.

TYRE CHAINSTyre Chain SelectionRegulations regarding the use of tyre chainsvary according to location or type of road.so always check them before installingchains.

Chain installationWhen installing chains on your tyres, care-fully follow the instructions of the chainmanufacturer. The chain bands will scratch the wheel covers. Remove the covers before installingthe chains.Install the chains on the front tyres as tightlyas possible. The use of chains on the reartyres is not recommended. Retighten thechains after driving 0.5-1.0km (1/4-1/2mile.)

CAUTION• The use of chains may adversely af-

fect vehicle handling.• Do not exceed 50km/h (30mph) or

the chain manufacturer’s recom-mended speed limit, whichever islower.

• Drive carefully and avoid bumps, holes, and sharp turns, which may cause the vehicle to bounce.

• Avoid sharp turns or locked-wheelbraking.

Avoid driving through flooded areas unlessyou are sure the water is no higher than thebottom of the wheel rims. Drive through anywater slowly. Allow adequate stopping dis-tance because wet brakes do not grip well. After driving through water, dry the brakesby gently applying them several times whilethe vehicle is moving slowly.

NOTEWhether the engine is cold or warm, it should

be started without depressing the ac-

celerator.

lf the engine fails to start using the

above Procedures:When the engine is cold-It may be that the engine is flooded (has ex-

cessive fuel in the cylinders). lf this is the

case, follow the starting procedure below'(1) Depress the accelerator fully and hold it.(2) While holding the accelerator fully

depressed, turn the ignition switch to the

START(Ill) position and hold it (a maxt-mum of 10 seconds; cranking) to dis-charge the excess fuel.lf the engine starts, the engine speedwill increase suddenly; release the keyand the accelerator immediately. In thiscase, the following steps are notnecessary.

(3) Release the accelerator after crankingthe engine.

(4) Without depressing the accelerator, crank the engine until it starts (a maxt-mum of 10 seconds)'

When the engine is warm-The above procedure should not be per-

formed because it will make starttng even

more diff icult. l f the engine is unusually diff i-

cult to restart when it is warm (fails to start

after repeated attempts without depressingthe accelerator), depress the acceleratorabout halfway to start it.

4. Let the engine warm up for about 10 sec-

STARTING, MANUAL TRANSAXLE

In extremely cold weather - below -18oC

(0"F) - or after the vehicle has been idleseveral days, let it warm up without operat-ing the accelerator.

CAUTIONDo not keep the starter engaged formore than 10 seconds. lf the enginestalls or fails to start, wait 5 to 10 sec-onds before reengaging the starter;otherwise, you may damage it.

NOTEEngine noise (from valve tappets) may oc-cur if the engine has not been operated foran extended period.

The noise should stop after the engine hasreached normal operating temperature.lf the noise does not stop, have the vehicleinspected by an Authorized Xedos Dealer.

Manual Transaxle Operation

The shift pattern is conventional, as shownabove.Press the clutch pedal down fully while shift-ing; then release it slowly.A special safety feature prevents inadvertentshifting from 5 (Fifth) to R (Reverse). Thegearshift lever must be returned to the Neu-tral position before shifting into R (Reverse).

NOTEMake sure the vehicle is completely stoppedbefore shifting into R (Reverse).

CAUTIONTo avoid premature clutch wear anddamage, do not drive with your foot rest-ing on the clutch pedal; do not use theclutch to hold the vehicle stopped on anupgrade, as when waiting for a trafficlight.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

Automatic TransaxleOperation

All normal forward driving is done with thetrolector in the D (Drive) position.

NOTE['or smooth operation, depress the brakepodal when shift ing from N (Neutral) or P(Park) to a forward or reverse gear.

CAUTIONr Do not accelerate the engine in R (Re-

verse) or any of the forward positionswith the brakes on.

r When stopped on an upgrade, do nothold the vehicle stationary with en-gine power. Use the brakes.

r Do not shift from N (Neutral) or P(Park) into L (Low), S (Second), D(Drive) or R (Reverse) when the en-gine is above idle speed.

TRANSAXLE RANGESP (Park)This position locks the transaxle and pre-vents the front wheels from rotating. Alwayscome to a complete stop before shifting intothis position. The transaxle may be damagedif you shift into P (Park) while the vehicle isIn motion.

WARNING!. Do not use the P (Park) position

in place of the parking brake. Al-ways make sure the selector leveris latched in P (Park) so that itcannot be moved unless the lockrelease button is pushed in, ANDset the parking brake tully.

. Turn the ignition switch off whenyou leave the vehicle, evenmomentarily.Never leave the vehicle unattend-ed while the engine is running,Unexpected and possible suddenvehicle movement may occur ifthese precautions are not taken.

. Never leave a child unattended ina vehicle.

R (Reverse)This position allows the vehicle to movebackward. Always come to a complete stopbefore shifting into or out of R (Reverse); youmay damage the transaxle if you shift intoR while the vehicle is in motion. exceot asexplained under Rocking the Vehicle (page3 6 )

N (Neutral)The wheels and transaxle are not locked.

D (Drive)This js the normal forward driving position, and the transaxle wil l automatically shiftthrough a four-gear sequence, providing thebest economy and power.

NOTEFor extra power when passing another ve-hicle or climbing steep grades, depress theaccelerator fully, at which time the transaxlewill shift down into the next lower gear.

4-7

CAUTIONIt HOLD flashes, it indicates an electri-cal problem in the transaxle.Should this occur, have the vehiclechecked by an Authorized Xedos Deal-

er as soon as Possible'

Power Brakes

Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes thatadjust automatically through normal usage. In the event power assist is lost because ofa stalled engine or some other reason, youcan still stop your vehicle by applying greaterforce to the brake pedal than you normallywould. The stopping distance, however, wil lbe longer. When the engine is not running, the reservebrake power is partially depleted each timethe brake pedal is applied. Do not pump thebrake pedal when the power assist has beeninterrupted, except when necessary to maln-tain steering control on slippery surfaces.

Brakes

l f the brakes should fail to operate while thevehicle is in motion, you can make an emer-gency stop with the parking brake. The stop-ping distance, however, will be much greater

than normal.

WARNING!Do not drive with Your toot rest-ing on the brake Pedal. This willcreate abnormallv high braketemperatures, excessive brakepad wear, and increased stoPPingdistances. When descending a long or steeqhill, shitt to a lower gear andavoid continuous aqPlication ofthe brakes, which will cause thebrakes to overheat and result ina temporary loss of braking Per'formance.Driving through water deePenough to wet the brakes maY ad'versely aftect brake Pertormance. It may result in the vehicle notslowing down at the usual rateand pulling to one side when thebrakes are applied. ANTTLOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)-The ABS control unit continuously monitorsthe soeed of each wheel. lf one is about tolock up, the ABS responds by automatical-ly releasing and reapplying that wheel's

brake. The driver wil l feel a slight vibration in thebrake pedal and may hear a chattering noisefrom the brake system. This is normal whenthe ABS operates.

WARNING!The ABS cannot compensate lor un'safe or reckless driving, excessivespeed, lollowing another vehicle tooclosely, or hydroplaning (a conditionof reduced tYre lriction due to wa-ter on the road). Do not relY on ABSas a substitute for safe driving tech'niques.

CAUTIONBe aware that braking distances may belonger on loose surfaces, (such as snowor gravel), which usually lie on top ofhard surfaces. A vehicle with normalbraking system may require less dis-tance to stop under these conditions. This is because the tyres build uP awedge ol the loose laYer when thewheels are skidding.

r To set the parking brake, pull the park-ing brake handle fully and firmly upwardwhile applying the brakes.

r To release the parking brake, pull thehandle upward and Push the button. Then lower the handle to the released po-sit ion while holding the button in.

WARNING!o Do not use the gearshift selector

lever in place of the Pa*ingbrake. Always set the Parkingbrake tully AND make sure thegearshift selector lever is secure'Iy latched in P (Park) with an au-

tomatic transaxle or in 1 (First)with a manual transaxle.

. Turn the ignition switch otf whenyou leave the vehicle even mo'mentarily. Never leave the vehicleunattended while the engine isrunning.

o Unexpected and sudden vehiclemovement may occur if theseprecautions are not taken.

Check the brake warning l ight on right-handmodels or the parking brake warning on left-hand models each time you start the engine. This warning wil l be i l luminated when the en-gine is running and the parking brake is set. Before driving, be sure the parking brake isfully released and the brake warning is off.lf the brake warning remains on after theparking brake is released, there is a malfunc-tion in the brake system. Have the systemchecked immediatelv.

Brake System Warning

lf the brake warning light remains on afterthe parking brake is fully released on right-hand models, there may be a malfunctionin the brake system. For more information, refer to Warnings and Indicators (page 4-16).

BRAKE SYSTEM, POWER STEERING

Brake Pad Wear Indicator Power Steering(Front disc brake Pads)

Power steering uses energy from the engine.lf the engine is off or if the power steeringsystem becomes inoperative, you can stillsteer, but it will require more effort.

lf you find steering hard in normal driving, consult an Authorized Xedos Dealer.

CAUTIONNever hold the steering wheel to the ex-treme left or right for more than five sec-onds with the engine running' Thiscould damage the power steering pump. When the disc brake pads become worn, the

built-in wear indicators wil l contact the discplates, causing a screeching noise to warnthe driver that the brake pads should bereplaceo.lf you hear a squealing or scraping noisewhile driving, have the brake pads checkedand if necessary replaced by an AuthorizedXedos Dealer as soon as Possible.

WARNING!Failure to replace the disc pads mayresult in damage to the brake sYs'tem and adversely affect brake per'

formance.

Radio Reception

LW.MW CHARACTERISTICS

Station mixingLW MW signals bend around such things asbuildings or mountains and bounce off theionosphere. Therefore, they can reachlonger distances than FM signals. Becauseof this, two stations may sometimes bepicked up on the same frequency at thesame time.

FM (Frequency Modulation)CHARACTERISTICSAn FM broadcast range is usually about40-50 km (25-30 miles) from the source.Because of extra coding needed to breakthe sound into two channels, stereo FM haseven less range than monaural (nonstereo)FM.

*Some modets. 4-41

Page 53: mazda xedos 6

AUDIO-

lWllFlutter/Skip noise ISignals from an FM transmitter move in Istraight l ines and become weak in valleys Ibetween tall buildings, mountains, and oth- |

Signals from an FM transmitter are similar tobeams of l ight because they do not bendaround corners, but they do reflect. UnlikeLW'MW signals, FM signals cannot travel be-yond the horizon. Therefore, FM stationscannot be received at the great distancespossible with LW MW reception.Atmospheric conditions can also affect FMreception. High humidity wil l cause poorreception. However, cloudy days may pro-vide better reception than clear days.

Multipath noiseSince FM signals can be reflected by ob-structions, it is possible to receive both thedirect signal and the reflected signal at thesame time. This causes a slight delay inreception and may be heard as a brokensound.or a distortion. This condition may alsobe encountered when in close proximitv tothe transmitter.

*Some models4-42

Page 54: mazda xedos 6

AUDIO.

Weak signal noiseIn suburban areas, broadcast signals be-come weak because of distance from thetransmitter. Reception in such fringe areasle characterised by sound breakup.

Strong signal noiseThis occurs very close to a transmitter tow-er. The broadcast signals are extremelystrong, so the result is noise and soundbreakup at the radio receiver.

Station drift noiseWhen a vehicle reaches the area of twostrong stations broadcasting at similar fre-quencies, the original station may be tem-porarily lost and the second station pickedup. At this time there will be some noise fromthis disturbance.

ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM

Engine Cooling System

The cooling system is a high-pressure typewith a reservoir and is f i l led with year-roundantifreeze coolant at the factory.

Check the antifreeze protection and coolantlevel at least once ayear-at the beginningof the winter season-and before travelinoto a colder climate.

WARNING!. Never attempt to remove the radi-

ator cap or coolant filler cap whilethe engine is operating. Doing somight lead to cooling system andengine damage and could resultin serious personal injury fromescaping hot coolant or steam.Turn oft the engine and wait untilit has cooled. Even then, use ex-treme care when removing theradiator cap or coolant filler cap.Wrap a thick cloth around it, andturn it counterclockwise slowly tothe lirst stop.Step back while the pressure isreleased from the cooling system. When you are sure all the pres-

7-14

sure has been released, pressdown on the cap-still using acloth-turn it, and remove it.

. Even if the engine is not operat-ing, do not remove the radiatorcap or coolant filler cap while theengine and radiator are hot.Scalding hot coolant and steammay still blow out under pressure;this could cause serious injury.

Checking Coolant Level

REPLACING SPARK PLUGS

WARNING!The spark plugs may be hot. Do notburn yourself.

1. Clean any dirt from around the spark plugbase of each spark plug.

2. Remove the plugs with a spark plugwrench.

3. Install each new plug by hand as far asit wil l go. lf necessary, a spark plugwrench may be used as an extension. lfa plug does not turn in smoothly, removeit and try again to ensure the correct en-gagement of the threads on the sparkplug with the threads in the cylinder head.

4. Tighten the plugs with a spark plugwrench. Do not overtlghten.

5. Make sure the spark plug leads are in-stalled in the correct order. Fasten theboot squarely over the end of each plug.

CAUTIONr The spark plugs must be securely

tightened, but not overtightened. Aplug that's too loose can get very hotand possibly damage the engine; onethat's too tight could damage thethreads in the cylinder head.

. Be sure the socket wrench is fitsquarely over the spark p!ug.

NOTEo When removing or unfastening the spark

plug cable leads, pull the boot, not thelead itself.

Tyre Care

For proper performance, safety, and maxi-mum fuel economy, you must always main-tain recommended tyre inflation pressuresand stay within the load limits and weight dis-tribution recommended for vour vehicle.

INFLATION PRESSURESAll tyre pressures (including the spare)should be checked monthly when the tyresare cold. Recommended pressures must bemaintained for the best ride, top vehicle han-dling, and minimum tyre wear.Refer to tyre inflation pressure chart on page9-4.

NOTE. Warm tyres normally exceed recom-

mended pressures. Do not release airfrom warm tyres to adjust the pressure.

TYRES

Underinflation results in excessive wear, poor handling, reduced fuel economy, and the possibility of blowouts of over-heated tyres. Also, low tyre pressure cancause poor sealing of the tyre bead, lf thetyre pressure is excessively low, wheeldeformation and/or tyre separation arepossible. So keep your tyre pressures atthe proper levels. lf a tyre frequentlyneeds refi l l ing, have it checked by anAuthorized Xedos Dealer or a tyre shop.Overinflation produces a harsh ride, han-dling problems, excessive wear at thecentre of the tyre tread, and a greaterpossibility of damage from road hazards.

WARNING!Overinllation or underinflation canreduce tyre life, adversely affect ve-hicle handling, and lead to suddentyre failure. This could result in lossof vehicle control.

TYRE ROTATIONTo equalize tread wear, it is recommendedthat the tyres be rotated every 10,000 km(6,000 miles) sooner if irregular wear de-velops. During rotation, check the tyres forcorrect balance.

When rotating tyres, check for uneven wearand damage. Abnormal wear is usuallycaused by incorrect tyre pressure, improperwheel alignment, out-of-balance wheels, orsevere braking. After rotation, be sure to bring the front andrear tyre pressures to specification andcheck lug nut t ightness.

Use of unidirectional tyresThe direction of tyre rotation is decided ac-cording to the tread pattern, which affectsthe tyre's performance in wet conditions. The unidirectional tyres must be installed ac-cording to the roll ing direction marks. Thesemarks are molded into the side wall of theryres.

CAUTIONUnidirectional tyres cannot be rotatedfrom the right side of the vehicle to theleft. lf they are rotated from right to left, tyre performance may be reduced in wetconditions.

NOTEDisc brake pads should be inspected forwear whenever tyres are rotated.

CAUTIONRotate radial tyres that have an asym-metric tread pattern only from front torear and not from right to left.

7-35

Page 134: mazda xedos 6

TYRES

Tread wear indrcator

Worn treadNew tread

TYRE REPLACEMENTlf the tyre is worn evenly, a tread wear indi-cator will appear as a soild band across thetread. Replace the tyre when this happens.Replacement of an unevenly worn tyre maybe necessary before an indicator band ap-pears across the entyre tread.

WARNING!. When replacing tyres, never mix

radial, bias-belted, and bias-typetyres. Use only the tyre sizes list-ed on the tyre label attached toyour vehicle, an the driver's door.Make sure that all tyres and

7-36

wheels are the same size andhave the same load-carrying ca-pacity. Use only tyre and wheelcombinations recommended onthe tyre label or by an AuthorizedXedos Dealer. Failure to followthese precautions can adverselyaffect the satety and handling ofyour vehicle. The use of any other tyre size ortype may seriously aftect ride, handling, ground clearance, tyreclearance, and speedometer cal-ibration.Driving on worn-out tyres is veryhazardous and will reduce brak-ing effectiveness, steering ac-curacy, and traction.

Spare Tyre

Check the spare tyre at least monthly to besure it is properly inflated and stored se-curery.

Page 135: mazda xedos 6

WHEELS, LIGHT BULBS

Wheels

WHEEL REPLACEMENTWhen replacing wheels for any reason, make sure the new wheels are eouivalent tooriginal factory units in diameter, rim width, and offset.Proper tyre balancing provides the best rid-ing comfort and helps reduce tyre treadwear. Out-of-balance tyres can cause annoy-ing vibration and uneven tyre wear, such ascupping and flat spots.

CAUTIONA wrong-sized wheel may adversely af-fect wheel life and bearing life, brakingand stopping abilities, handling charac-teristics, ground clearance, body-to-tyrec learance, snow chain c learance, speedometer calibration, headlight aim,and bumper height.

Headlights

Your vehicle's headlights have replaceablehalogen bulbs. A burned-out bulb can bereplaced without disturbing the headlightbody.

HALOGEN BULBSHalogen bulbs contain pressurized gas thalwil l produce flying pieces of glass if broken.Always handle them carefully and avoidscratches and abrasion. lf the bulbs are l it,avoid their contact with l iquids. Never touchthe glass with bare hands. Residual oil maycause the bulb to overheat and burst whenlit. A bulb should be operated only when in-stalled in a headlight.lf a bulb becomes damaged or cracked, re-place it immediately and carefully disposeof it.Keep bulbs out of the reach of children.

Recommended Lubricants

* Refer to the recommended SAE viscosity numbers on the next page.

To help achieve proper engine and power-train performance and durabil ity, use onlylubricaling oils of the proper quality. The cor-rect oils also help promote engine efficien-cy that results in improved fuel economy.Engine oils labeled Energy Conserving Oilare now available. They contribute to fueleconomy by reducing the amount of fuelnecessary to overcome engine friction andin other ways. Often these improvements arediff icult to measure in everyday driving, butin a year's time, they can offer significant costand energy savings. These oils are recom-mended for use in conjunction with therecommended API classif ication.

CAUTION BEFORE CHECKING LUBRICANTSAlways be sure to clean the area around any fi l ler plug, drain plug, and dipstick beforechecking or draining any lubricant. This is especially important in dusty/sandy areas andwhen the vehicle is used on unpaved roads. Cleaning the plug and dipstick areas wil l pre-vent dirt and grit from entering the engine and other mechanisms thev could damaoe.

Engine oil viscosity (thickness) has an effecton fuel economy and cold-weather opera- ltion (starting and oil flow). Lower-viscosity en-gine oils can provide better fuel economy iand cold-weather performance; however, Ihigher-temperature weather conditions re- Iquire higher-viscosity engine oils for satisfac- |tory lubrication. Using oils of any viscosity Iother than those recommended could result Iin engine damage. IWhen choosing an oil, consider the range Iof temperature your vehicle will be operat- |ed in before the next oil change. Then se- |lect the recommended oil viscosity from the Ichart.

WARNING!To avoid possible injury by sharpobjects, it is advisable to wear pro-tective gloves when attempting toopen the fuel-filler lid manually.

WARNING!• Do not adjust the driver’s seat

while the vehicle is in motion. Do-ing so could cause loss of con-trol, accident, and personalinjury.

• Rear-seat passengers should notlean on the back of the front seatwhile the vehicle is in motion. Aseat back that is folded forwardeven slightly may not lock proper-ly during a sudden stop or a col-lision.

• Do not allow packages or otherobjects to interfere with the nor-mal position of a seat back. Thismay prevent it from locking in the event of a sudden stop or col-lision.

SEAT SLIDETo move the seat forward or backward, move the lever upward, slide the seat tothe desired position, and release the lever.

CAUTIONPlace nothing under a front seat. Looseobjects might interfere with the seat-slide mechanism.

Page 191: mazda xedos 6

SEAT RECLINERTo change the seat-back angle, lean forward slightly and raise the lever. Then lean backto the desired angle and release the lever. After adjustment, make sure the lever isreturned to its original position; otherwise, theseat back could unlatch while the vehicle isin motion, causing the driver to lose controlof the vehicle.

WARNING!To reduce the risk of sliding underthe lap belt and thereby sufferingpersonal injury in the event of a col-lision, do not recline the seat backmore than necessary for comfort. The seat belts are designed to pro-vide optimum protection when thefront passenger and driver are sit-ting well back and upright in their seats. During a collision, especiallya front-end collision, the risk of per-sonal injury may increase with theincreasing recline angle of the seatback because the front passenger and driver may slide uner the lapbelt and have restraint forces ap-plied directly to their abdominalareas. Therefore, try to keep theseat back in a fairly upright positionwhenever possible.

To help decrease the possibility or severityof injury during accidents and sudden stops,we recommend that the driver and pas-sengers be properly restrained at all timesby using the seat belts provided. The lap-shoulder belts have retractors with inertialocks. The retractors keep the belts out of the waywhile passengers enter or exit the vehicle.Inertia locks allow the belts to remain slackon the passengers for comfort until a de-celeration force occurs (such as a suddenstop or collision). At that time the belts willautomatically lock in position, and you andyour passengers will be restrained.

WARNING!• Lap/shoulder-belt assembl ies

maybe damaged when subjectedto stress.Replace all belts, retractors, andhardware in use during any colli-sion except a minor one.Replace all restraint systems andproperly repair all anchorages inareas damaged by a collision.

• Passengers should not be al-lowed to ride in the cargo area of a vehicle. Persons not riding in aseat with a fastened seat belt aremuch more likely to suffer seriousbodily injury during a collision.

WARNING!• Never wear the shoulder belt un-

der the arm• Never swing it around your neck and

over the inside shoulder.• Never use a single belt for more

than one person at a time.• Be sure the lap portion of the belt

is fitted snugly around the hips, not the waist.

• Use the shoulder belt on the out-side shoulder only.

Failure to follow these precautions could increase the chance andseverity of injury.

NOTEIf the belt locks when being pulled out, re-wind it completely into the retractor thenpull it out to the desired length.

The Supplemental Driver Air Bag Restraint System is designed to provide protection forthe driver in a frontal accident in additionto that provided to the driver by the three-point seat belt system. However, the Sup-plemental Air Bag Restraint Systemis not designed to deploy in any accident ex-cept a moderate to severe frontal collision, and is not designed to assist the driver in a side impact, rear impact, or roll-over acci-dent. Seat belts, whixh are designed to helpdecrease the possibility or severity of injuryin accidents or sudden stops, must be usedto obtain the best ocupant protection ofwhich the vehicle is capable. We recom-mend the use of seat belts by all vehi-cle occupants to reduce the risk of injuryin an accident. Use of a seat belt by the driver is particularly important to keep the driver in the proper position for maximum airbag protection.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONThe Supplemental Driver Air Bag RestraintSystem consists of two basic sub-systems:the driver air bag system, with the inflatorand air bag; and the electrical system, in-cluding crash sensors and diagnostic mod-ule. The air bag is mounted in the centre ofthe steering wheel, but is designed to stayout of sight until activated by a moderate tosevere frontal collision.

WARNING!To avoid any accidental activation ofthe system or rendering the systeminoperative, which may result in

serious injury, no modifications should be made to any componentsor wiring of the Supplemental Driv-er Air Bag Restraint System as illus-trated. This includes the installationof additional trim material, orbadges or similar items over the steering wheel hub and installationof additional electrical/electronicequipment on or near SupplementalDriver Air Bag Restraint Systemcomponents and/or wiring.

The Supplemental Driver Air Bag RestraintSystem is designed to rapidly inflate afterreceiving a signal from the crash sensors.Upon inflation, the rubber coated nylon baghelps prevent the driver’s face and chestfrom striking the steering wheel or wind-shield, supplementing the restraint provid-ed by the seat belt. The bag then rapidlydeflates.

NOTEDuring a severe frontal impact, a sudden, fairly loud inflation noise will be heard anda small quantity of smaoke will be released, neither of which is injurios. The smoke doesnot indicate a fire in the vehicle.

The air bag is designed to function on a one-time-only basis. In the event that the air bagis deployed, the air bag module will notfunction again and must be replaced.Only Authorised Xedos Dealers should re-pair or replace the system. Please contact an Authorised Xedos Dealer.

WARNING!If the vehicle has been in a collisionthat was not great enough to acti-vate the Supplemental Driver AirBag Restraint System, a careful in-spection should be made to checkfor deformation of the parts onwhich the sensors are mounted, andrepairs must be made if necessary.See you Authorised Xedos Dealer;otherwise the Supplemental DriverAirbag Restraint System may notfunction properly in the event of anaccident.
