English Debating Club

Teacher In-charge: Smt. Divya Khanna

Young people, today, not only require skills to understand the information being presented, they also need the skills to research through different sources, critically analyse the information presented and finally form their own conclusions and arguments. Debating is one such activity that contributes to educational achievement and also to a range of wider outcomes that work towards developing more confident and well rounded individuals.

The English Debating club in this session explored topics within curriculum subjects and moved to more diverse social issues and issues which are pertinent in the present global and political scenarios. The following objectives were targeted through the functioning of the club-

•To provide a significant training ground for the development of students' communicative abilities.

•To provide opportunities for students to practice and share their skills development.

•To provide opportunities for students to understand and communicate various forms of arguments effectively in a variety of contexts.

•To conduct research using multiple sources to support a position in a debate.

•To generate effective critical thinking in students.

The club is a student driven club. A student or group of students research topics of interest and present them to the club. The club members select the topic/s from the ones presented. A list of topics is created for the month.

The club uses a mixture of 'short preparation' and 'long preparation' debates. During the 'short preparation' debates, students get the topic/motion as little as fifteen minutes before debating it. This encourages quick, creative thinking.

At 'long preparation' debates, students get a week to research the topic using the library or internet, and prepare their speeches in advance.

If students find preparing for a certain debate challenging, a teacher-led group discusses the arguments before dividing into teams to write individual notes before the debate.

A follow-up discussion of the debate is held to critically analyse the performance.

Street Theatre Club

The first few sessions include short listing themes for the play which are generally social issues about which awareness needs to be generated for a positive change in society. The club members then divide themselves into smaller groups and come up with ideas that ultimately connect to the theme. All inputs are noted, soaked up and organised into a script replete with catchy phrases and songs, humour and loudness by the group of binders who do the final editing. Roles are suitably assigned to all members and they are ready to add the emotional quotient to the drama through their enactments.

The first club meeting was a reunion of old members and joining of the new ones in a very informal atmosphere. Members were invited to display their acting and

18

writing skills so that the latent talents of each member come to the fore and could be suitably utilized later. The intricacies of street theatrics were then formally introduced to all club members through audio-visual clips of some selected street plays. Once the theme was decided, groups were formed through various interesting games with just one motive- learning to work as a team. The members then started incorporating pertinent colloquial dialogues, songs and anecdotes in the script that address the social issues head on.

The first street play, 'Need Vs Greed' was performed in front of the entire senior school on Teachers' Day .The play aimed at creating consciousness about the narrow lines that exist between need and greed; be it for gadgets , political ambitions or food .Interwoven with it was the idea of redefining student- teacher relationship in the present scenario. The other street plays on the themes of 'Hypocrisy', 'Cleanliness' and 'Indifference' are in the process of being scripted for the purpose of presentation on suitable occasions.

The activities in the club have provided opportunities to the students to explore their hidden talents as actors, stage managers, script writers, lyricists, singers, prop managers etc. in the process of presenting and preparing a street theatre play. They learned to work together as a team working towards achieving a common objective, accepting others' opinions and respecting the perspectives of their team mates.
