This program of lectures, case presentations, panel discussions, and open question-and-answer periods is designed to provide updated information on advances in general internal medicine for primary-care physicians and internal medicine subspecialists. The multidisciplinary approach to patient management will be stressed in presentations by members of the faculty of the Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In addition to sessions devoted to gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonary and allergic diseases, nephrology, infectious diseases, hematology/oncology, rheumatology, cardiovascular diseases, and various other topics of special interest, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in their choice of one of three different interactive group workshops offered daily, Monday through Thursday. "Lunch With the Professors," a popular feature of past meetings that affords participants the opportunity to visit with faculty members representing various medical specialties, will be offered on 2 different days. Another special feature of the program will be a presentation entitled "Epistles to the Editor," by Michael J. Hogan, M.D. The program director is Udaya B. S. Prakash, M.D.

A clinical trial, supported by the National Institutes of Health, is currently being conducted at the Mayo Clinic testing the effects of calcium channel blockers in patients who have intractable epilepsy. To qualify for this trial, the patient must have suffered from intractable epilepsy for more than 2 years despite optimal use of current anticonvulsants. Patients must also be between 18 and 45 years of age. The calcium antagonist is used as an add-on therapy, and the patient's current anticonvulsant regimen is not altered. For further information, please contact Dr. Fredric B. Meyer, Department of Neurosurgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN 55905 (507-284-5317).

M a y 9 t o l l , 1 9 9 0 Marketing a n d Sel l ing Your Hospital Laboratory Rochester , Minnesota To compete for today's ever-decreasing health-care dollars, successful hospitals are developing and improving their laboratory outreach programs in the midst of legislative uncertainty and strong competition. The following topics will be presented: marketing basics, including market surveys, target markets, needs assessment, and the development of a marketing mix; how to apply the principles of marketing to your hospital laboratory; basic selling techniques, including an examination of the sales process, feature-benefit analysis, and seven common steps

in the sales cycle; value added-consultative selling; preparing for important legislative changes; and how to launch your own sales effort. Representatives from four regional laboratories will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of developing an outreach program on the basis of their own personal experiences. The workshop is designed for pathologists, laboratory managers, medical technologists, and administrators who are interested in learning how to market and sell the services of their hospital laboratories.
