Maynard Advantage # 61On June 24, 2017 I had the pleasure of being part of the ribbon cutting opening the Honey Bee Meadow, Maynard’s newest park. The event highlights several things about Maynard. At Town Hall, we began calling these community attributes ‘The Maynard Advantage’ – symbols of the good things that make up this wonderful, small town.

Some of these are fi rmly established, and well known, like our walkable downtown, the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, and annual events like the ‘Sip & Stroll.’ Less well known, but as important to the community culture, are activities like ‘The Spaghetti Supper’ and ‘Maynard Rocks.’ The Honey Bee Meadow has its own special signifi cance. It is both the location of ‘A Maynard Advantage’ – in the rear of 61 Summer Street and part of the Artspace property – and the embodiment of The Maynard Advantage, formed from the vision of two creative artists, their diligence and energy, along with the generous support of 139 local donors.

The artists, Melissa Ljosa (who is also a bee keeper) and Denise Shea, jumped into action. They determined all they needed to make this little urban oasis and found a state grant to help fund it. This is where the Maynard magic came into play as they needed to fund 50% of the grant through small, local donations. The wonderful people of Maynard donated $8595 – $2095 more than the match required by the grant.

Take a stroll over to the meadow, sometime soon. There are murals painted by local high school students, sculptures from local artists, educational information about the importance of bees, two ‘conversation’ benches – carved from apple and oak which are true works of art in addition to being comfortable. There are boulders for sitting or climbing and wildfl owers in bloom everywhere. The beehive, located in the back of the park, is awaiting its fi rst colony; we hope to have them in residence shortly.

Everything about the park sings out to the community spirit and determination that helped create it. Well done Ms. Ljosa and Ms. Shea! The entire town will enjoy your idea made real.

The View from HereLast Wednesday (June 21) at approximately 11:45 a.m. I started receiving text photos from excited seniors who were at the Museum of Fine Arts (the COA sponsored two MFA trips in June). Soon after came photos of the group from our van driver’s (Mark Tomyl) phone. The images captured rapt attention to the docent’s words and shared enthusiasm over various displays. We decided to schedule a visit to the MFA at this point during our monthly museum series because the Senior Watercolor Class recently started a session refl ecting on Henri Matisse’s artwork and the “Matisse in the Studio” exhibition was occurring. What fun!

When I say “we” I really mean Pat Kozik. Many know Pat from different settings but at the COA she’s our Principal Clerk and the one responsible for the wonderful trips we’ve been offering. Whether it’s the Museum-A-Month series, Mystery Tours, seasonal and local special events, Pat’s creative energies fl ow when she’s investigating our next great adventure. Pat’s scrupulous planning skills enable participants to get the most from the occasion whether a tour, lunch at a restaurant close by or the best way to access the occasion. In addition we’ve started offering trips through private trip companies – the Gloucester Lobster Cruise on August 22 is wait list only! Take a look at page 11 for our next “big” trip.

With thank-you’s being in order (I’ll never be able to say enough to Pat) I must extend one to Diane Wasiuk for the stunning window boxes on the deck walk to the COA. Each day we stroll past the most colorful and beautifully arranged fl owers – what a pleasurable way to the start the day!

Look for details in August’s newsletter about a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group. For now enjoy July!

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MURDER!One of the most popular categories of fi ction is mysteries. What makes them so compelling? Often it’s because IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MURDER! Some of the best mystery writers are really exploring social issues and human character and telling us stories of history we didn’t know. On Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m. the Friends of the Maynard Library will be hosting three of these authors.

Hallie Ephron is a New York Times best selling author who will be talking about her latest book You’ll Never Know, Dear. The Booklist review said “With its strong characters and vivid sense of place, the novel should draw from both camps…women’s fi ction and mainstream mystery” and Deborah Crombie after saying she “LOVED this book!” said that “the doll-making background was fascinating”. Hallie’s other books include Night

Night, Sleep Tight that was a fi nalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award and Writing & Selling Your Mystery Novel, an Edgar Award fi nalist.

Ray Daniels is an author who uses his background in the tech world to create a series featuring Aloysius Tucker, an uber-geek whose created controversial security software with his wife Carol and his story begins with the book Terminated when he is fi red and his wife is murdered. Ray follows Tucker’s story through Corrupted Memory and Child Not Found and his latest tale was released this month - Hacked - which deals with a hacker who terrorizes a child on-line. Set in Boston, you’ll recognize the streets that Tucker walks. And while the subjects might not make it obvious, Ray includes humor in his stories.

Hank Phillippi Ryan, who has had an amazing career as an award winning investigative reporter for Boston’s WHDH-TV has an equally amazing career as a mystery author. She is a Mary Higgins Clark Award Winner, the winner of fi ve Agatha awards and a Daphne nominee and her latest book - Say No More - was the Library Journal’s Best Thriller of 2016. This book takes a “ripped from the headlines” look at what a reporter who is encouraging others to testify should do when she fi nds herself in the position of being the one being asked to tell what she has seen - at possible great risk.

The event will be held in the Roosevelt Room of the Maynard Library at 77 Nason Street. It is free, open to everyone and handicap accessible. Light refreshments will be served.

Our home health professionals work as part of a multidisciplinary team, closely

communicating with each other, the patient’s referring physician, family members, as well

as other caregivers. The multidisciplinary team consists of nursing staff, rehabilitation

therapists, home health aides, and medical social services.

REP. KATE HOGAN'S SENIOR NEWSJULY 2017Rep. Hogan’s 2017 Memorial Day Remarks

To all the Veterans here today, our grateful nation and our Commonwealth thank you for your service and your sacrifi ce.

This Memorial Weekend 37,000 American Flags were placed on the Boston Common. Each fl ag represents a Massachusetts serviceman or woman lost in battle dating back to World War One. Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, 144 fl ags represent Mass service members who have been killed – 92 in Iraq and 52 in Afghanistan.

These brave servicemen and women died to make the world safe for Democracy, to rid the world of a despot ravaging Europe, they responded to attacks on American soil and have ever-protected the greatest experiment in Democracy the world has ever known: The United States of America.

This past month I was involved in a pinning ceremony to give long-overdue recognition to Vietnam War era Veterans and their families. It was moving and I was honored to read President Obama’s proclamation observing and commemorating the end of the Vietnam War.

Across the nation, Americans are uniting to thank and honor Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifi ce. I was so very moved and so very troubled that it took 50 years to say “welcome home” to our heroes and to properly remember those who fell in battle. Those who came home in fl ag-draped coffi ns with only the family to say: You are home. You are a hero. The Vietnam War left our country divided. May we never treat those who serve our country like that, again.

The Presidential proclamation reads in part:

“Half a century after those helicopters swept off the ground and into the annals of history, we pay tribute to the fallen, the missing, the wounded, the millions who served, and the millions more who awaited their return. Our Nation stands stronger for their service…we honor their proud legacy with our deepest gratitude. More than 58,000 laid down their lives in service to our nation during the Vietnam War. Now and forever, their names are etched into two faces of black granite, a lasting memorial to those who bore confl ict's greatest cost.” (President Barack Obama’s Presidential Proclamation – Vietnam Veterans Day – March 29, 2012)

AFTER 50 YEARS LET US SAY to 58,000 who laid down their lives: You are home. Rest well SOLDIER, SAILOR, AIRMAN AND MARINE. You are our county’s Heroes.

This is what we will remember for the next 50 years - and will never forget. For we know the selfl ess character of those who gave their last measure of duty and devotion.

Let us hope our own personal character might be shaped by the valor and bravery we honor here today. And on this – and every – Memorial Day: let us all commit to a town, a Commonwealth & an America worthy of their noble sacrifi ce.
