Luther, has a Table of Duties. We could print it here, but that would be too easy. Why not search out your Catechism. You will find it directing you to some of your God given duties! Let’s joyfully do them, until He calls us home.
Could there be a better example of “duty” than in the account below from the sinking of the Titanic? A survivor of the Titanic confirmed the often repeated account that the members of the orchestra sacrificed their chances of escape by continuing to play as the lifeboats were lowered, but added the information that even after the majority had been swept to their deaths, a lone player dutifully clung on. “There was only one musician left,” he said. “He was the violinist and was playing the air of the hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” The notes of this music were the last thing I heard before I went off the poop (deck) and felt myself going headlong into the icy water with the e n g i n e s a n d machinery buzzing in my ears.” Our Small C a t e ch i sm , b y
Years ago, the word “Duty” was one of the first principles of character, life and conduct. The word appears super frequently in the literature of old. Have we forgotten that word and its deep meaning? We seem to have replaced it with a more general and vague word, “responsibility.” Many would agree, “duty” has a sense of a mora l God g iven assignment behind it. Responsibility, by many street definitions, is more task-like. Duty has holiness connected to it. Check that dictionary! It is has been said, study duty. Learn duty. Detect your God assigned duty. Go and do that duty to the best of your ability until the last moment of your life.

Pastor Dave Hatch
Her name was Terry Amelse. She became very attached to Our Saviour Lutheran Church and to the Bible and Brunch gang that meets in the Parlor every Tuesday morning. Terry had attended for several years, but a terminal illness had come to visit and was determined to stay. Terry became housebound. From the bed in her home where she knew the Lord would come and take her in a few days, OSLC member Terry huddled her telephone close and listened to the greetings from her OSLC Bible and brunch friends who were gathered in our Parlor. The ladies passed the telephone around the room. Within a week from that call Terry had “gone home.” Her funeral would be within 10 days from the sound of her joyful voice that day. Terry was ready for the Savior to come and take her home. Perhaps you met Terry. Terry came to OSLC because a friend invited her.

On May 30, 2012, Our
Saviour Lutheran Church’s
Sanctuary will be hosting the
graduation of five 8th grade
students from our association
school, Green Bay Trinity.
The graduation will take place
during our normal Thursday
service at 7:00 p.m. Everyone
is invited to attend this joyous
event. A reception will be
held after the event for Green
Bay Trinity graduates and
their families.
You may not have
enough room to put all of the
day’s events on your calendar
so just write in ‘church’ and
leave it at that. On May 20,
the children will attend their
last day of Sunday school for
the year and that means the
annual Ice Cream Social. This
year, the Ice Cream Social will
be part of the “Servant
Sunday” celebration and
potluck dinner. To allow for
all to join in on the
celebration, there will be no
10:45am service that day. Pull
out that special “crowd
pleasing” recipe and join
together with other members
of OSLC in thanking the many
servants that keep Our
Saviour serving others in the
name of Jesus Christ.
Join us on May 11, 2012 for the last fish fry of the
season. Although we’ll be
back in September, it will be
a long summer without that
great food and the wonderful
fellowship opportunities the
fish fry can bring.
We have many folks to thank
including…
… all of the dedicated
volunteers who worked this
year in the kitchen and dining
room.
… the new faces that
joined us and hopefully will
be back next year.
… the ladies who made
the pies sold each night as a
fundraiser.
… the youth who
worked for tips by serving
drinks and helping as
needed.
… everyone who
donated soda and other items
used for each month’s event.

She was one of the regulars at Bible and brunch and the lad ie s wra pped the i r friendship around her like a welcoming blanket to a stranger. Terry had fulfilled her occupational duty a few years ago as a nurse at one of the local hospitals. After retirement she spent time and energy looking after her elderly brother, keeping her relationships alive and deepening her faith life. From the top of a long list of enviable character traits, the moving one was Terry’s acceptance of her death—the Spirit’s comfort in her soul, mind and emotions. She had told her pastors of the last items she needed to accomplish, her final tasks, and then she did them. That is when the peace came over her. It was that inner calm from within her that made the “phone call from the Parlor” so dynamic for those who talked to her that day. Terry was with us a short time, but she made a long and lasting impression of faith.

answers? Would they be much different than the ones from the family at home lapping up strawberry shortcake? I suspect the answers would be quite similar, at least in a broad form. Let's follow that first question with another one, shall we? "How can we improve on that list, both at home and at our church?" We may be asking those very questions in the months ahead, as we all may be participating in a congregational self-study. We will learn about why we are here, how the Savior desires us to serve and how we can improve our serve.

Now that is an interesting question. Let's imagine a family is sitting around the evening meal. They are a young household, Mom, Dad and several children. Dad looks around the table after the mashed potatoes have been devoured and the chicken is down to the bones. He notes a sense of contentment on every face. Mom brings out the strawberry shortcake as Dad asks the group, "What is the purpose of our family?" What do you suppose the answer would be? How might the discussion go? Please join the Our S a v i o u r L u t h e r a n C h u r c h youth along with youth from fellow

The youth will be fasting for 30 hours straight Friday, June 1 at noon through Saturday, June 2 at 6:00 p.m.
If you are a youth and would like to raise pledges, please let Will, Whitney or Avra know. Start taking pledges today! If you are someone wanting to make a pledge, find a youth who will be fasting and is taking pledges.
During the famine, we will be joined by guest youth director (and Will’s cousin) Chris Flores and some youth from a group who have travelled to Haiti to show us where the donated money will be going. Dear Families, As a parent you have a very tough choice to make about your child’s preschool experience. For most children preschool is their first educational experience and the launching of their educational career which will span the remainder of their lives. I pray that, as you make this choice, you realize that Our Saviour Lutheran Church preschool is here for you and we would love to partner with you for these first educational years. If you choose to visit preschools in the area and you begin to choose what program is right for your family, please consider what each program has to offer your child. • Does it have a warm caring Christian environment? • If the environment developmentally appropriate and are the experience geared toward children? Will your child be able to participate in activities that promote social, emotional, intellectual, physical and spitual growth? • As a result of the program, do you feel confident that your child will become a passionate
