• What is your most precious memory of your time of study at the University of Aruba?

Faculty: Faculty of LawYear Graduated: 2012Title of Thesis: Het Nederlanderschap na Rottmann. Over de gevolgen van Janko

Rottmann v. Freistaat Bayern voor de verliesbepalingen van de Rijkswet op het Nederlanderschap

Further Study: MA International Laws, Maastricht UniversityCurrent Position: Student

My years at the University of Aruba have been some of my most memorable years. The countless debating sessions on Wednesday evenings, the extracurricu-lar activities with some of the best fellow students I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, the numerous student organisations I have participated in are all pre-cious memories in their own way. For me the list could really go on and on.

If I were forced to choose however, I would say that two of my most precious memories at the UA both happened to coincidentally lie at the end of my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The first one was at the graduation ceremony for our Bachelor’s degrees. I was given the honour of saying a few words on behalf of the graduates. The week before, however, I was occupied with organisational matters regarding the ceremony. Thus I found myself writing my speech 15 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. The speech was well-received, and I am sure that those in the

audience will certainly remember how the “bus trip” symbolises our journey through the Bachelor’s.

The second memory was in any event my most emotional memory at the UA. It was the 24th of July, the day I defended my Master’s thesis. After the defense, the committee exited the Aula to deliberate on my performance. The ‘deliberation’ took longer than expected, and after half an hour, I was starting to get anxious (I was told afterwards that the delay had to do with administrative issues which arose). Finally, the committee returned to the Aula. Carlos Bollen, as chair of the committee, announced my grade for both thesis and defense, whereupon the audience rose in a standing ovation! More than for my defense, I believe the ovation symbolised the bond I had formed with my friends, family and acquaintances in the audience. It meant (and still means) a lot to me that I merited their appreciation.

Chun, Luk

The University of Aruba has truly been my alma mater, and I can only hope for it to grow and fulfil the same role for many other students.

In what ways has your educational experience at the University of Aruba served to prepare and guide you through your career or further study?

• What are your hopes and wishes for the UA for the next decade?

My educational experience at the University of Aruba was very diverse. I am sure that my time at the Uni-versity of Aruba has prepared and guided me towards my further study in ways I am not aware of (at the moment). I can only describe the experiences which have noticeably helped me in the path I have taken after my time at the University of Aruba.

The legal education itself provided me with an under-standing of the various legal elements of my everyday life, and it has surely helped me see the world in a different light. It was also my legal education which has imparted upon me the importance of knowing what is happening in the world I live in.

My four years as an avid participant in the Debating Society of the UA have allowed me to improve my linguistic skills in Dutch, as well as my ability to truly listen to the arguments of others, to react quickly and effectively, and to speak in public in general. These skills have proved particularly important in my (fur-

ther) study, as active participation during tutorials is expected.

The various study sessions with my fellow students have revealed to me my interest in teaching and sharing knowledge in general. This revelation, in com-bination with my interest in doing research, was one of the aspects which influenced my choice to pursue a further study in the Netherlands.

The various bonds I have formed with my former lec-turers at the UA have not only made my time at the UA an amiable period, but I have also had the privilege of receiving their helpful advice and kind assistance in my transition to a further study.During my time there, I have also learned the impor-tance of time management and proper planning. It is one thing to listen to a person telling you how im-portant time management is; it is an entirely different experience to feel first-hand how bad planning can lead to disastrous results.

T In particular, I hope for the University of Aruba to in-ternationalise. At the end of my time there, the Univer-sity has already made a lot of progress in this area by cooperating with various universities in the Caribbean, the United States and the Netherlands. The various op-portunities for Aruban students to undertake a semester abroad (as well as the chance for foreign students to experience the University of Aruba) is commendable for a small university like the UA, and I believe that such ex-change programs offer an enrichment of the educational experience for its students.

Hopefully the UA will further internationalise by offering internationally oriented programs. I also hope for the programs offered at the University of Aruba to become accredited as soon as possible. Students are often discouraged from attending the University of Aruba because of a lack of recognition of its diplomas in the labor market. Accreditation would eliminate this barrier and allow students to experience the high quality of education offered at the University of Aruba, augmented by the interactivity between students and lecturers owing to its small scale.
