Opening the Gift As we come off of the season of Christmas, where the giving of gifts is a regular part of our experience, the question I want to consider is whether you will open, use, and bless others with the gifts you have been given? Sadly, some gifts we receive at Christmas, we never use. Rather they are returned for something else, never really opened or put on the shelf where they gather dust.

God has given us tremendous gifts. The gift of salvation through Jesus Christ is the central gift of the Christian life. The good news is that the gift of eternal life is what awaits those who place their trust in Jesus Christ. However, if we stop there or simply see our relationship with Christ as a ticket to heaven and that we are “just passing through” this life, than we have missed the point.

As has been said, we have been saved to serve. God has not only gifted us with salvation, he has given us natural abilities, acquired skills, and ultimately, spiritual gifts which are meant to be opened, explored and put to use in order to build up the body of Christ. Sadly, many believers in Christ have never heard about spiritual gifts or have never undertaken the wondrous exploration of finding what gifts God has given them.

At Sierra Presbyterian Church, we celebrate the fact that God has given one or more spiritual gifts to each believer in Jesus. By taking time to look back over your journey of faith, previous experience in various ministries, and undergoing a spiritual gifts inventory, a picture is formed of how God desires to work through his followers.

Many in our church have already participated in this workshop or a similar opportunity to explore their gifts. I believe that is a central reason why have such an active, vibrant church, with many involved in ministry, not just a few. At the same time, for a church to grow and remain vital every member must find where their gifts fit into the overall activity of God in our church and community.

That is why I want to invite you to participate in our Discover Your Place in Ministry-Spiritual Gifts Workshop on Sunday, January 11

th at 12:30pm. Audrey McIntosh and I

will facilitate this workshop that we want every member of our church to participate in at some point. The reality is, God does not give gifts that are meant to be put on the shelf and never used. God has given gifts that he wants his people to put into practice. So plan on joining us for this workshop (You can sign-up by calling the church office or through the sign-up sheet in the lobby) and continue to open your gifts.

Blessings, Pastor Mike

Stephen Ministers: The “After People”

Have you found yourself wondering, what is Stephen Ministry and exactly what is a Stephen Minister? Let me explain that Stephen Ministers are “After People”.

Stephen Ministers are there: …after you washed and returned the last casserole dish. …after the divorce papers have been served and the bottom falls out of our life. …after you arrive home following the memorial service and emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in. …after the relationship has ended but the wounds are still painful. …after the phone call you’d always hoped would never come. …after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away. …after the baby has arrived, putting more demands on you that you ever dreamed possible. …after you find the pink slip inserted with what is now your final paycheck. …after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are the “After People”. We are ready to come alongside you, and provide comfort and support for as long “after” as we are needed. Is it time for you to call a Stephen Minister? You may contact one of our leaders: Mary Pipkin 432-1339 Nancy Woodruff 273-2412 Audrey McIntosh 265-3291 x18 We look forward to your call…. Your Stephen Ministry Team

LIBRARY NEWS! The library team would like to announce that we are welcoming a new member to our team. Bill Blount has offered to be our data base manager. We are excited to have him! Now that the Book Sale is behind us, we are moving forward on adding a new computer and database to keep our library current. Over the next few months we will be able to add new books and DVDs. We have books and DVDs on hand, and will start there, but we are also looking for input and suggestions from the Congregation. It is important to us that the library be a source of enjoyment as well as spiritual growth. We are looking for suggestions of authors you enjoy and would like to see more of their work. Please give us your input in all categories. It will also be very helpful to all of us if many of you would give us book reviews like the one below.

Vicki Foster submits the following review:

“The Insanity of God” by Nik Ripken This is a book of stories of Christians in Africa, Russia, Ukraine and China who bravely stood for their faith in Jesus. They were rejected, tortured and persecuted because of the stand they took in living the Christian life. In spite of the harsh treatment they endured, the gospel spread and hundreds of lives were won to the Lord. This book is well written and one hard to put down. Check it out!

If you are currently reading a book that you feel would be a good addition to our library, please let us know. Of course, if you would like to donate it, that would be a blessing too! Many of you have already donated many books and we are truly appreciative.

Come see us—we are open for your reading pleasure!

MISSIONARY UPDATE JANUARY 2015

Matthew 24:14 “And the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world

as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Jesus

THANK YOU Luke and Jenny Herrin, and Laurel for sharing with us last Sunday about “the King who had it all” – Solomon. His rise and fall, and how he instructs us today. Blessings on Luke and Jenny as they return to UK this week, and for Laurel as she continues her ministry with Intervarsity at UC Merced. It was so good to see them again.

Let’s continue to pray for Steve and Lori Curry on home assignment in Redding, CA. They need to raise quite a bit of support before they can return to Papua New Guinea, where Daniel wishes to graduate from High School. Please pray with them about this.

Cathy Perez thanks the Lord for teachable moments with the kids in Bible club. Like when a playful puppy bounds into the class diverting the kid’s attention away from the lesson. Cathy was able to explain how Satan can take our attention away from Jesus by bringing things into our lives that are not of Him. The kids got it! Vidal thanks the Lord for safe travels back and forth from Guatemala City to Tectitan, and for what the Lord has accomplished through him while visiting the village.

Special news from KAREN HAYDEN who is going on a Mission trip to RWANDA

Karen will be going to Rwanda with a group from her brother, Mark Nelson’s, church in Yreka. They will be going to the town of Kigufi among the Hutu and Tutsi people, to work with the Compassion International program to improve the facilities of the church and related buildings. They will also share a Vacation Bible School experience with over 200 6

th graders. They will

be there over Easter, and will be giving them Bibles in their own language. Please pray for Karen as she prepares for this trip, and take time to chat with her about it.

News of other missionaries will be in next months’ Sierra Story. Don’t forget to check out the kiosk, and Fellowship Hall for copies of their letters. Because of the season,

many of them had great photos!

PLEASE KEEP ALL OF OUR MISSIONARIES IN PRAYER.

Happy New Year from the Land of the little people, aka Children’s Ministry.

I want to start off by thanking all of you who have prayed for Children's Ministry. Please know that we could not make it without your prayers—the enemy hates it when he sees people influencing a life for Christ, but the team has made a commitment to stand Shoulder to Shoulder, Heart to Heart, standing in the gap for His Children. We do our best fighting on our knees in prayer, before our Father. Thank you for continued prayers!

It’s a planning time—setting out our year calendar—keeping in mind all the areas we want to reach and teach the kids. So, with calendars out, committees being formed, we continue our journey to the promise land. Here are some dates for you to mark on your calendar, if you feel the Holy Spirit tugging you in these directions.

SUNDAY, January 11th—All Children’s Departments—Potluck, Informational meeting. Noon to 1:30. DOWNSTAIRS IN THE ACTIVITY AREA. We’ll be sharing about our Summer Sensation, Missions Outreach, Classroom teaching tips, Behind the Scenes help (could NOT make it without your support). Easter programs, Joyful Noise Choir. This will be a Fun and Creative time of Fellowship.

SUNDAY, January 18th—P.I.T. Stop (Parents in Training) right after Second Service. This is a 15 minute informational meeting, recharging your parenting skills, helpful hints, and is designed just for you. So, if you are parent or guardian of a child/children, this class is for you.

Summer Sensation- Kick Off meeting: Thursday, January 22nd, 6:00 to 7:30. Room B , if you would like to be part of this incredible Outreach to our Community—if you like drama, crafts, set design, shopping for items, publicity, worship, small group leading. Come and JOIN US!!!!

“DISCOVER YOUR PLACE IN MINISTRY” A great way to start off the new year is by attending the Spiritual Gifts Workshop

Sunday, January 11th God uniquely created each of us to serve Him and when we understand how He has

gifted us, we serve Him with joy and passion. We will meet from 12:30 - 5:00 pm.

There is a sign up sheet at the Information Center and

childcare is available, if requested by January 5th

Contact the Church Office if you have questions or

would like more information We will begin with a light lunch at 12:30 pm

and class will conclude by 5:00 pm.

Dear Congregation,

It is with heartfelt thanks that Jim and I thank you for the many ways you have shown us extraordinary love, support and appreciation over the years and particularly this last month. Let me count the ways... many of you have called, stopped by, written notes, brought flowers, gift cards, jams, jellies, cookies, candy, chocolate, moose of all sizes and descriptions, homemade crafts of all types (some involving moose), books, a beautiful handmade quilt of exceptional beauty... because of the love and time- consuming work behind it, done in such a short time by the Christian Women in Stitches. And of course, a big thank you for the extraordinarily generous cash gift!

Then there was the once-in-a-lifetime Retirement Party; we were absolutely overwhelmed by your love and generosity. Thank you all, especially Janet Lowell, my dear friend and mentor, for organizing such a meaningful and memorable event with a very capable team of people including Craig Burgess, Judy Doyle, Mary Reeve, Pam Sufleski, Selma Wright, Cecilia Shampay, Randy Partch. We loved the special musical presentations from Kristen Burgess and her singing partner, Remnant, who lights up any room with the Glory of God, Jonathan and Linda Steel (who I would save out of a vat of chocolate), Maggie and Jesse Lee who were beyond adorable, Meryl Wilson, Dave Anderson and Pastor Mike who made presentations.

Thank you for also recognizing and honoring Jim; the spouse is often the silent partner in ministry and can easily get overlooked. Jim has been a faithful partner in ministry for nearly 40 years.

Blessings to all as you continue your journey with Jesus,

Pastor Linda and Jim
