Formula in Buddhism; the 3rd Vow

You see the formula below. These are essential when we learn the Teaching of Buddha. Itgoes as follows:

1. To Learn Buddhism is to learn myself,2. to learn myself is to learn Buddha’s Compassion.3. to learn Compassion is to forget myself,4. and to forget myself is to throw me into Buddha’s World.

The Third VowEach Vow appears to me to clarify what I am. The 3rd Vow in the Larger Sutra says,

“If the men and devas in my country, after obtaining Buddhahood, should not radiate in true gold color, may I not achieve the Highest Enlightenment.”

My country: The World of Purity or Pure LandBuddhahood: The world showing Dharma or Truth fully.Men and devas: There are differences in quality of being in this world. However, Amida’s World equally accepts any kind of being.Highest Enlightenment: Perfect Wisdom and Compassion

The 3rd Vow means that every being in Amida’s World radiates in true golden color eventhough we see different kinds of people in this world. Or, every being becomes the sameskin color in the World of Dharma.

The same skin color in the World of Dharma? What does this vow mean? For example, when I see white, black, yellow, brown, or red people, I surely see differences. Butdifference in skin color is not inconsequential. Differences trigger our bias, prejudice, andracism; we judge and value people, discriminate against or for them, or we sometimesattack and kill them because of different skin colors.

What does this vow clarify about me? As long as I am alive, knowingly or unknowingly, Iattach to any appearance, judge it as I want, and show discriminatory karma until the verymoment of my death. It is simply because I have no wisdom to view anybody as they are.Or I create and invite sufferings because of my attachment in skin color. But am I that sortof bad and ignorant guy? Yes, I am. I became aware that it’s impossible for me to be freedfrom prejudice, bias, and discrimination as long as I live. Or I have to live with them until Idie. That’s why I have been very careful about me whenever I see anybody.

To learn Buddhism is to learn myself. I have become aware of strong attachment of mineby and through this Vow. At the same time I feel something warm in this vow. In Gassho, Rev. E. D. Fujii

Thank you to the following people who used theirSunday-after-service-Bake-Sale-time to fold lastmonth’s newsletter: Joyce Nakata-Kim, MichikoFujii, Michelle & Glenn Asakawa, Cynthia Kiyotake,Brett Brucklacher, Steve Koga, Dennis Flodeen,Kathy Kuge, Debbie & David Tanigawa and MikeShibata.A special thank you to Dharma School students,Anna, Emi and Katie Tsuchimoto who, along withtheir mother and grandma, Brandi and ShirleyTsuchimoto, spent a school Spring Break morning tohelp stuff and seal last month’s newsletter. Thankyou to the following people who also helped: EdNakagawa, Herb & Dot Inouye and Toney Kim.

Thank you to Lesli Hirokawa and her students forstamping the Special Service Donation envelopes.Thank you to Sharon Shin who donated a wholebatch of frozen cookie dough for Dharma SchoolBake Sales.

Thank you to EVERYONE who participated (in anyfashion) in our Hanamatsuri weekend. Saturday’sEshinni/Kakushinni Seminar with guest speaker,Rev. Yamaoka, was truly “enlightening”. Besidesproviding important information, Rev. Yamaoka’sattendance for a TSDBT weekend is a reminder ofhow lucky we are as TSDBT Sangha membersbecause:

· the Temple provides us with a learningplace and knowledgeable ministers tofurther our understanding of Jodo ShinshuBuddhism

· fellow Sangha members care enough tocreate auxiliary organizations such as BWAwho sponsor events and speakers (such asthe Eshinni/Kakushinni Seminar) for therest of us

· other fellow Sangha members care enoughto belong to the Board of Directors; theyvoluntarily attend to the business side ofTemple matters so that the rest of us canenjoy the religious and social side ofTemple life (their efforts provided the

means for us to obtain the use of a GuestMinister Speaker).

· it may seem like I am wandering in thought.. . I’m not – it’s just that once you cast thatnet of gratitude out there (imagine afishing net skimming the surface of a lake),the strands expand so that soon you arereaching far beyond a single target point.Eventually, you encompass many differentlevels and delve into many spans of time(much like interdependence)

Anyway . . . .Sunday’s Hanamatsuri Service, Luncheon andProgram reminds us of how lucky we are as TSDBTSangha members because:

· we have a time and place to celebrate thebirth of Siddhartha Gautama amongstfriends and family

· fellow Sangha members care enough tocreate auxiliary organizations such asBWA, Choir, Dharma School, YBA andproceed to perform all the necessary tasksrequired for the rest of us to enjoy a verymemorable day

· we associate with community groups whoare willing and eager to participate in ourHanamatsuri celebration by attendingservice and performing Kanbutsu

· we each possess good health whichprovides us with the strength and staminato sit through a lengthy (and meaningful)service. Actually, this point is presentedwith tongue-in-cheek attitude. . . . Ioverheard many a comment concerning the“not normal” length of Sunday’s service [weendured, er – enjoyed, more singing, morechanting and more listening than a regularSunday service]. I so appreciated theoverheard response (which so preciselyexpressed my thoughts), “This was nothingcompared to what I had to sit through as akid! You haven’t sat through a long serviceuntil you’ve sat through a Hanamatsuri withRev. Tsunoda and Rev. Tamai presiding overthe same service.”

· we seem to raise extremely talented anddedicated children who can put on a heckof a show every year!

Thank you to EVERYONE who participated, in anyfashion, in our Hanamatsuri service andcelebration. It was a truly wonderful Sunday.

Mr. Haruhisa Yamamoto is being recognized for his“great efforts to popularize healthy Japanese food bybringing Japanese food to the kitchens and homes ofthe people of Colorado”. Haruhisa Yamamoto is theformer owner of Tofu Company and is a member ofTSDBT.

Congratulations to both Seiji Tanaka and HaruhisaYamamoto for this well-deserved recognition.

I can’t believe the school year is almost over! Springis my favorite season so I’m glad we’re in it. In thespring, I feel the anticipation of summer. I love thespring flowers and the new buds on the trees. Iknow that I have to take allergy pills for a few weeksso I’m able to enjoy it, and it’s worth it! Getting toknow the kids and the teachers in Dharma Schoolhas been fun. The kids grow up too fast, and I’mthankful for the moments we have to interact.Teachers, too, decide to take a break and even retire.I’m just glad I was able to get to know them duringthe school year. Spring will change into summer, andwe’ll all be off enjoying the warm sun and free time.

A new school year will then be just around thecorner, but until then, we have plenty to keep us busyand to celebrate! On Mother’s Day, YBA will againserve breakfast. Birthdays for May, June and Julywill be celebrated on May 20th. Because ofMemorial Day, there will be no Dharma Schoolclasses on May 27th. On June 3rd, we’ll celebrateour students with Awards Sunday, and our annualpicnic will be on June 10th. Listen for details duringSunday announcements. It will be a potluck lunch, asusual.

Thank you for your continued support of our studentsin the Dharma School. We do this for the kids, andtogether, we’ve helped to create a memorableexperience for them all.

This year we combined kindergarten and 1st gradeclasses together. We have been having a great timetogether and have made a lot of new friends. We arehappy to have returning students and several newfaces in our classroom. We have been re-learningthe Promise and the Kokun and have been introducedto the Pledge and the Obustudan. Every month wefocus learning the Buddhist holidays as well as non-Buddhist holidays. We also have been busypreparing for our Hanamatsuri performance and areexcited to show everyone our awesome dance! Ourclass is full of energy and has been a lot of funteaching this year. We look forward to spending therest of the year together!

ESHINNI - KESHINNI - KESHINNI - KESHINNI - KESHINNI - KAKAKAKAKAKUSHINNI SEMINARUSHINNI SEMINARUSHINNI SEMINARUSHINNI SEMINARUSHINNI SEMINARby Kim Morehouse

I’m so glad I attended the ESHINNI -KAKUSHINNI seminar again this year. Once againit enlivened my Love and respect for the BuddhaDharma! We were so honored to have Rev. SeigenYamaoka as our guest speaker. He first presented uswith the question, “Just why do we have this specialday for Eshinni and Kakushinni anyway?” Who werethey and why are they SO special? His way of story-telling really made me feel like Iknew the wife and daughter of Shinran Shoninpersonally and, as he explained, that they were twowomen, though extraordinary, just like us today! In telling us the story of how Shinran Shonin, with histeacher and others, “broke away” from the traditionof religion as being only for the elite, and then howhis wife and daughter struggled as well to keep histeaching alive and pure, establishing the “Haku”,grave site memorial for “the nameless one” whichwould eventually become the Hongwanji, Rev.Yamaoka really brought home the teachings of inter-dependence, oneness and change. If Shinran Shoninhadn’t met Eshinni (who was from a very sociallyand politically prominent family) and if her fatherwasn’t already friends with Honen, perhaps Honenand Shinran would have both been executed with theother non-traditionals instead of only exhiled! Sowhere would our Jodo Shinshu sect be now??Also, I learned that the name Jodo Shinshu doesn’thave anything to do with the name Shinran (I thoughtit did). Actually, Shinshu comes from two words“shin - true” and “shu - import”. The Jodo Shinshuteaching was originated in an effort to keep Honen’s“everyday Nembutsu” teachings “true”. I learnedthat it is the recitation of the “Nembutsu” thatdistinguishes Jodo Shinshu Buddhism from otherforms of Buddhism, and that it is The Four NobleTruths and the Eightfold Path that is common to AllBuddhism. (Probably the Dharma school kids knowthis )It was a joy to listen to Rev. Yamaoka’s story-tellingway. After his talk, we walked together as a groupto “The I-Fish” restaurant for lunch! Oh yes, some-where in his story, I learned a new Japanese phrase– Rev. Yamaoka’s mother would tell him, “Remem-ber, you are Hotoke no kodomo. (You are “Buddha’schild”). Thank you Rev. Yamaoka and all who

organized the seminar!
