Dear Members and Friends ofColorado Springs World AffairsCouncil,

It has been an honor and apleasure to serve this greatorganization during the past six

months, and to bring CSWAC's mission of greater global awareness and dialogue to ourcommunity.  It's hard to believe that next week'sRefugees ­ Fact and Fiction program is our lastspeaker program of this season.  Workingalongside your Board of Directors, we havealready begun a great program schedule for nextfall, and have plans for expansion of our otheroutreach programs.  Our International Visitors,Education, Young Professional, Travel, andDiscussion Groups are all areas with excitinggrowth possibilities!  If you would like to beinvolved in any of these areas, please let usknow.  

The World Affairs Councils of America willconduct the annual WACA Leadership Missionto Israel from June 2 to June 10, 2016. TheLeadership Mission will be hosted by theAmerica­Israel Friendship League.  I am pleasedto announce that I will be joining a WACAdelegation comprised of an AIFL escort, WACAPresident Bill Clifford, and 11 other delegatesfrom the Council network. This LeadershipMission to Israel will focus on a variety ofcontemporary issues, including Middle Eastregional affairs, Israeli politics and diplomacy,counter­terrorism, immigration and refugees,innovation and entrepreneurship (alternativeenergy, IT, health care), and religious diversity.  Ilook forward to sharing my experience on behalfof CSWAC upon my return.

Fran Pilch and Angela Joslyn havebuilt new partnerships to broaden theInternational Visitors LeadershipProgram, bringing an increasingnumber of State Department­sponsored international visitors toour region to strengthen professionaland cultural connections.

Our educational outreach hasbroadened, both in the communityand in high schools, and ourexpanded partnership with the PikesPeak Library District offers excitingpossibilities for the future. Our annual High School Symposiumin partnership with Colorado Collegeon September 22nd will examine, ina non­partisan way, the implicationsof our presidential election forAmerica's role in a volatile world.

Ashley Dodge and Samantha Albertare expanding our YoungProfessionals program with newinitiatives for the coming year­beginning with Pikes PeakWorldQuest 2016 on August 19th.Do you have your team yet? Whynot?

Colorado Springs ChineseCultural Institute (CSCCI) CSCCI, a 501(c)(3) nonprofitcorporation, was founded in 2001 tofoster community understanding andappreciation of China and itscustoms. We are dedicated topromoting awareness andunderstanding of Chinese cultureand traditions. China is the mostpopulous nation in the world, and ishaving a greater and more profoundimpact as it expands its roles inglobal activities. Consequently,people are showing more interest in

Colorado Springs on February 27th. The trip toD.C. started off with a very prolonged delay atChicago O'Hare, putting us into the WashingtonD.C. Hilton well after 10pm. We did manage tofind a wonderful pizza joint before going to bed. 

 On Friday, the team enjoyed a wonderfulreception by the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center.There were museum exhibits of Omani cultureand a talk by the ambassador to Oman, HerExcellency Hunaina Sultan Al­Mughairy. Thestudents had a chance to spend some timetalking to the other teams about their interests.They spent the rest of the evening back at thehotel studying and discussing current events.

 The next morning, the AWQ competition washeld at the National Press Club. I found thepictures on the wall fascinating. It was like awalk through the media history of the last 7decades. The team did well, placing right in themiddle of the pack with the median score of72/100. The winning score was 91, with a

I first heard about theWorld Affairs Councilthrough word of mouth.Larry Barrett, HarryGautche and I are allmembers of the samechurch and they told meabout the organizationwhen I revealed I havean active interest intravel and world affairs.The first event I attendedwas in 2008 at aluncheon at theBroadmoor. I have livedin London, San Franciscoand Chicago ­ and as aresult I have beenexposed to excellentspeakers in the past.With that said, I wastruly amazed then ­ and Istill am today ­ by thecaliber of speakers weare able to attract here inColorado Springs. Theyare among the best youwill find anywhere.

Can you tell us aboutpersonal experiencesthat contributed to yourinterest in globalaffairs?I was born in Canada (ona USAF base) and holddual citizenship, so the"international thing"intrigued me from ayoung age. But it wasduring my Junior year ofcollege ­ when I did asemester abroad inScotland ­ that mypassion for travel,

Friendship Force of the PikesPeak Region.  The Friendship Force of the PikesPeak Region is one of more than375 Friendship Force clubs in over60 countries throughout the world.Friendship Force International (FFI)provides opportunities to explorenew countries and cultures from theinside by bringing people together atthe personal level. Through itssignature program of homehospitality, local hosts welcomeinternational and domestic visitorsinto their national and regionalculture, sharing with them meals,conversation, and the best sightsand experiences of their region. Recent visits and exchanges haveincluded places varyingfrom Alajuela, CostaRica, Cleveland, The MountainStates Regional Conferenceinvolving the six clubs of the regionin Grand Junction  At the beginningof June, our club will host membersof the Brandon, Manitoba, Canadaclub, and July will bring welcomemembers of the Central NorthCarolina Friendship Force Club. Formore information, please refer to ourwebsite at http://friendshipforcepikespeak.com

Sister Cities International 

Torchbearer Marlee Tate withMayor John and Janet Suthers

An American had the privilege ofbeing the sixth torchbearer in the Riorelay.  Marlee Tate of ColoradoSprings, Colorado, one of the sistercities of Ancient Olympia, carried

sudden death tie­breaker. The topics rangedfrom the Sultanate of Oman to "The Arctic". Theteams enjoyed a wonderful lunch talk about theArctic Council and why it is so important. A mapwas shown from the perspective of lookingdown from the North Pole over the arctic. Thestudents truly gained a global perspective oncethey saw how shipping lanes are beginning toopen up in the Arctic ocean, and countries likeRussia and Canada are actually very close! Theteam celebrated by returning, for the third time,to partake in some delicious Chinese food inChinatown.In regards to sightseeing, on Friday the teamvisited the National Gallery, with one of ourteam members, Samuel Blake being anexcellent tour guide. We saw masterpieces bymany American and Dutch masters as well asthe only DaVinci in North America! Afterwards,the program coordinator at World Denver (who Iactually coached in volleyball years ago!),Gergana Kostadinova arranged for all Coloradoteams to assemble at the office of ColoradoDistrict 1 representative Diana DeGette. Herstaffer politely answered our questions on awide range of topics about Colorado, the TPP,and the current state of politics on the Hill.Gallery passes allowed us to see the Housefloor and hear a Senator speaking to a group ofstudents. They were in recess at that time. OnSaturday night we were able to see the NationalMall at sunset. The students really enjoyed themonuments and were moved by the Vietnamand WWII memorials. We ended the night, after10 miles of walking, at The White House. Thenit was back to the metro stop and the hotel.Getting to D.C. a day early, and leaving laterSunday really allowed us to enjoy the visit.

The students overwhelmingly mentioned that thetrip broadened their horizons. The readings fromthe Great Decisions publication, which was thesource of the competition's questions, allowedthem to see that World Affairs can be excitingand really relevant. Seeing the inner workings ofD.C. and meeting with like­minded people, thestudent's glimpsed the sorts of careers availableto them in Politics and World Affairs. Sam Blakeintends on joining the Foreign Service andattending George Washington University in twoyears. The other 3 are intending on STEMcareers, with Abel Waller attending theUniverstiy of British Columbia in the fall. HighSchool students are often seen as being myopicand uncaring about the world outside of theirlittle insular bubbles. But this group of studentstruly gained a more diverse and globalperspective through this experience. We aregrateful and beyond appreciative of theCSWAC's generosity. Your investment inRampart's team is truly an investment in ouryoung leaders and thinkers.

cultures and global affairsstarted to truly develop. Ireturned to London thefollowing summer as anintern with JP Morganand upon graduation Itook a "gap year" with aBritish friend of mine totravel and work our wayaround the world. After afew years of work in theU.S., I returned toLondon to obtain myMBA at London BusinessSchool. Along the way Imet my wife, Tang­Lin,who is a Citizen ofSingapore. We havemade a point of raisingour son, Collin, withexposure to manycountries and cultures.We have taken him toEurope, Latin America &throughout Asian. He isnow 15 and will travel toSingapore this summer ­for the 15th time.

What do you do whenyou're not attendingCSWAC events?I am a Senior FinancialAdvisor and CERTIFIEDFINANCIALPLANNER™ with WellsFargo Advisors and Iserve as the RelationshipManager to many of ThePrivate Bank clients herein the Pikes PeakRegion. I love to travel ­particularly internationally­ and do so at everyopportunity. I will join myfamily in Asia for acouple of weeks this yearand we plan to visitfriends in Europe nextsummer. In addition toworld affairs, I have apassion for Arts &Culture, which developedthrough my early yearsas a performer. I supporta number of culturalorganizations and I singin my church's choir. Youwill often find me at artsevents around thecommunity.

Committee for International Visitors

What is it?  As citizen diplomats, we can enhance both thelocal and national image of the United States inthe minds of our international visitors andthereby foster international understanding andcooperation in the near and long term. TheCommittee for International Visitors (CIV) is oneof more than 90 community­based organizationsin the country that provides assistance tointernational visitors brought to the UnitedStates under the U.S. Department of State'sprestigious International Visitor LeadershipProgram (IVLP).  CIV committee members havethe opportunity to socialize and interact withvisiting leaders by providing home hospitality,which usually consists of hosting a small groupin your home for dinner.

Recent Events  

World Affairs Council?I know there are stillmany people in ourcommunity who don'tknow about the WorldAffairs Council. My firstwish is simply that weraise the awareness ofthis great organization.As exemplified by mystory, word of mouth isone of the most importantways to introduce othersto the Council. Once weget people to attend anevent they quickly cometo understand the caliberof speakers we attractand the excellence weoffer in our otherprogramming.

As an observer ofglobal events, whatsorts of trends do yousee?The world has been in abit of a rut for the pastseveral years ­ botheconomically (and likelyas a result) in terms ofthe advance ofdemocracy. So it can bedifficult to be optimistic,but I am. The advance ofdemocracy has stalled,but it also hasn't given upground following threedecades of staggeringprogress and despite apainful global slowdown.Europe has beenundergoing fundamental,structural changes thathave arguably beennecessary for years and Ibelieve the continent willultimately be stronger forit. As a frequent visitor toAsia, I have seen thevolatile cycles thatemerging marketsexperience. When theycome back they usuallycome back quickly andstrong ­ it's just a matterof time. Smartphonesand other technologiesare reaching even someof the most remoteplaces on earth, which Ibelieve will ultimatelycontribute to economicdevelopment and furtheradvances in democracy

International Military and Security CooperationConference, April 28­May 2

The 10 person contingent, 8 foreign guests andtwo State Dept escorts, that came lastThursday to talk about security issues ravedabout their time here in Colorado Springs. Theyparticularly loved their home hospitality dinnerwith the Bogardus family, and the CIVcommittee sincerely thanks Freddie Bogardusfor providing them such a warm welcome.

Security Issues in Space: The Japanese visitconcluded Tuesday, May 10 after May 9th visitsto Space Com on Peterson AFB and the SpaceFoundation and then a visit to USAFA thatincluded a dialogue with leaders of theEisenhower Center for Space and DefenseStudies, among them Ambassador RogerHarrison, Deron Jackson, and Dr. DamonColetta.  The four Japanese guests also enjoyedlunch with cadets who are minoring in theJapanese language and visited the CadetChapel.

Upcoming Events Afghan women athletes: Ten athletes and sportsadministrators are visiting here May 17­21st. The visit will include visits with the USOCheadquarters and training center, Paralympics,UCCS, USA Basketball and Taekwondo.
