Malangatana’s MasterpieceA decorated artist uses a Fiat 500 as his inspirational canvas to help raise funds for charity

To celebrate the official opening of Mozambique’s premier Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealership in Maputo on the 5th April, a very special Fiat 500 was revealed – a car designed and painted by award-winning Mozambican artist, Malangatana Valente Ngwenya. The work, entitled “The Italian Woman” quite literally takes Malangatana’s artistic vision from the gallery and onto the street. Somewhat poignantly, the Ma-langatana 500 was the last piece ever crafted by the artist as he sadly passed away on the 5th January 2011. The mobile masterpiece was unveiled at the dealership’s inauguration by relatives of Malangatana and the Ferreira Dos Santos family, the latter of course being the owners of the Maputo dealership and the patrons of this shared initiative. The idea was conceived in the middle of 2010 when Malangatana met with the Ferreira Dos Santos family and it was decided to invest in a project of artistic and cultural import that would at the same time have a major beneficial social spin-off. A brand-new Fiat 500 1.4 and all the art materials donated by Técnica Industrial, the company owned by the Ferreira Dos Santos family, served as the inspirational canvas for the artist’s imagination. Malangatana named the vehicle which he worked on in his final month of life in Maputo, “The Italian”. Day after day, on his way to the dealership, where he worked under cover, he would announce that he had a meeting with his “Italian Woman”. The result is a striking fusion of Italian design and evocative African symbolism. The flanks of the 500 are adorned with mesmerising nature-inspired imagery; a unique touch embellishing the rear and the dashboard is Malangatana’s charac-teristically flamboyant signature embossed in aluminium.“The Italian Woman” will go on show to the entire world on the www.sapo.mz portal from the 5th May till the 6th June, by means of a virtual auction run by Sapo Mozambique, the media and technology partner for this initiative. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Malanga-tana Foundation, a charity which raises funds for needy Mozambicans.According to a spokesperson for the Malangatana Foundation: “The recent death of Malangatana did not allow him to personally intro-duce his “Italian Woman” to the world. That task instead fell to those of us that were closely involved with the project and, in a small way, allowed us to pay homage to an all-time great Africa artist, an icon in the Mozambican cultural landscape and, above all, an extraordinary human being. “The Italian Woman” is a crowning tribute to a memorable artist’s fruitful life and serves to commemorate and perpetuate his name in space and time.” Malangatana Valente Ngwenya was born on the 6th of June 1936, in the district of Marracuene. He was a re-nowned Mozambican artist and poet, known internationally by his first name. He produced and worked in various mediums, from painting, sculpture, ceramics, murals to poetry and music. His works revolved around political and historical happenings in Mozambique, focusing until 1975 on the injustices perpetrated by the Portuguese colonialism and the anti-colonial war. Post independence, the focus shifted to themes centred on the civil war. After this period his work began to evolve around broader, universal themes, capturing life’s hardships and its heroic aspects; thereafter the 80’s were a more sensual period focusing on love.Along the years, he had several personal exhibitions in Mozambique, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, Cuba, United States, Spain, In-dia, Hong Kong, Portugal and Turkey. He was awarded the Nachingwea medal for his contribution to Mozambican culture and was made part of an official order of Infante D. Henrique in Portugal. In 1997, UNESCO named him “Artist for Peace” and was handed the Prince Claus prize. He passed away on the 5th of January in Matosinhos, Portugal. Fiat & Alfa Romeo Maputo is part of the massive JFS Group, a Mozambican-based family company which was founded by Joao Ferreira Dos Santos over 100 years ago. The Group has interests in several industries including agriculture, metals and real estate. The automo-tive division with distribution rights for five different automotive brands falls under the Técnica Industrial banner.

stralia, Europa, Mediterraneo, Mercosur, Nafta, Patto Andino e Centro America.Un ulteriore passo avanti verso la tutela del vero “Made in Italy”, un modo concreto per contrastare le tante e troppe imitazioni cui sono invitati a partecipare tutti i turi-

sti/clienti dei ristoranti tricolori all’estero.

- Bice Southern Sun Hyde Park (codice 38)

- Casa ToscanaTrafalgar, KwaZulu-Natal (codice 397)

"ITALIAN HOSPITALITY, ITALIAN RESTAURANTS AROUND THE WORLD"

a) What is it?This project stems from experience gained in Italy from the Chamber of Commerce network with the devising of the label "Italian Hospitality,"

carried forward with the operational contribution of the Istituto Nazionale Ricerche Turistiche [National Tourist Research Institute] - IS.NA.R.T. - a Chamber of Commerce company.

"Italian Hospitality" was created in 1997 to develop the quality of service and to guarantee consumers.Today in Italy, approximately 5,400 tourism businesses are involved (including hotels, restaurants and farm holidays) spread over 80 provinces

of 18 Italian regions."Italian Hospitality, Italian Restaurants around the World"is an initiative ofUnioncamere, developed also with the cooperation of FIPE, the Federazione Italiana dei Pubblici Esercizi [Italian Federation of Public Works, addressed to all those Italian restaurants abroad that guarantee respect of qualitative standards typical of Italian hospitality. The project involves theItalian Chambers of Commerce abroad, located in 45

countries that will be involved in the popularisation of the initiative in their respective territories.b) The Objectives

GENERAL ORGANISATION OF THE PROJECT

The "Italian Hospitality, Italian Restaurants around the World" project provides the following general organisation:

• Coordination Committee is chaired by Unioncamere and composed of representatives of ministries, associations, interested public enti-ties and by the Chairman of the Evaluation Committee. It is the governance organ of the initiative, whose task also includes the defini-tion and updating of the 10 rules of good Italian hospitality. At its meetings, representatives appointed by the interested public entities

concerned or their delegates will participate.• Evaluation Committee is the technical organ composed of experts representative of key institutions and organisations involved or their

delegates. The Chairman is appointed by the Coordination Committee. The Evaluation Committee will examine the dossier and, it be-ing the case, issue the certificate "Italian Hospitality, Italian Restaurants around the World."

• Italian Chamber of Commerce Abroad (CCIE) deals, also with the coordination of Unioncamere and Assocamerestero, with the popu-larisation of the initiative, to provide information on how the brand is awarded, to solicit and collect the candidatures of restaurants. The CCIE will handle, under the close supervision of the Secretary-General, the implementation of the inspection visit and that for the main-

tenance of the certificate issued to restaurants.• Technical Assistance is entrusted to IS.NA.R.T. which will provide secretariat and technical support for those involved in the initiative.

• Phase 2 - Candidates: the interested restaurants become candidates by sending to the competent CCIE the application form for par-ticipation in the initiative, completed and signed.

• Phase 3 - Admission: the CCIE receives the membership requests and, subject to formal checking of application documents, admits the businesses to the next phase of evaluation by the Evaluation Committee.

South African Consul General, Dr N Nokwe, opens the South African stand at VINITALY Verona, Italy 7 April 2011

www.italcham.co.za page 8

Three South African wine companies exhibited at the 45th VINITALY wine show from 7 April 2011 - Idiom (Whalehaven), which won the trophy for the best South African Bordeaux red at the 2010 Decanter Wine Awards, Belbon Hills and Linton Park, which prides itself on contributing to the preservation of the rhinoceros. As always, the South African stand at the show was mobbed and the television, print media and radio paid priority attention to the exhibitors. This year the attraction of the pres-ence of Giorgio dalla Cia, the celebrated wine master, added to the lustre of the South African display, since he was the win-ner of the Winemaker of the Year and he was winemaker of Meerlust when that vineyard was honoured by VINITALY 2005 & 2007.

The exhibitors’ stand was opened by the Consul General of South Africa in Milan, Dr Nomvuyo Nokwe. The Consulate General also provided the backgrounders, maps and information on wine and South African wine routes for the exhibitors’ stand. The office, through the Marketing Officer, declares it is working towards a future official stand supported by the De-partment of Trade and Industry as VINITALY has cemented its place as the largest and most prestigious wine show in the world with 3996 exhibitors this year. A record-breaking 156.000 trade visitors attended. (The figures are verified by an inde-pendent German exhibition audit firm.)

In toasting South Africa and the exhibitors, Dr Nokwe encouraged Italians to visit the South African winelands: “South Africa is the country of diversity par excellence: more than a voyage, it is the complete experience made up of wild nature, limpid seas, electrifying adventure, culture and tradition of which wine is an outstanding example.” This sentiment contrasts with Romeo’s Verona:

“There is no world without Verona walls But purgatory, torture, hell itself. Hence-banished is banished from the world”

Pedro Estrada Belli, the owner of Belbon Hills, one of the exhibitors, expressed his pleasure, after VINITALY at the prospect of at last being introduced into the retail sector of the Italian market which gave extra satisfaction to the exhibitors after meetings with supermarket and hypermarket chains. He gave his support to the plan to mount a national exhibition at VINITALY in the future and praised the role of Marcella Uttaro, the marketing officer of the Consulate General..

The Fair of Verona is more than a hundred years old. The fairgrounds are the centre for the agro-industry and host 30 shows amongst others for: olive oil (SOL), wine-making technology (ENOLITECH), Agrifood (all running parallel with VINITALY), agro-industry (Fieragricola), meat (EUROCARNE) and baking (SIAB).

Each serious member of the wine industry in South-ern Africa should visit this exhibition. Besides the marriage between food (“crocca in bocca” – crunch-ing in the mouth) and wine, the tastings and the wine competition make a major impact upon sales. A packaging competition lines up the major innovations in bottling and packaging.Contact: 021 788 7069 Fax 021 788 5616 e-mail: [email protected]
