As I close out my year as President, I want you
all to know how honored I’ve been to serve you. I extend my sincere thanks to the BOD, the Tour committee, and all members who have volunteered their time and whose cooperative efforts have resulted in the continued progress of our club.
The Tour, headed by Char Thomann, is the jewel in our club’s activities. For two years, the Tour Committee has put time, effort, and substantial resources into planning all aspects of this event to make it a success.
When you sell Tour tickets, not only are you helping our club endure, but you are also helping to build NCBG’s Wonder Garden, which promises to be a magical place for children to explore the wonders of Mother Nature.
I encourage you to take time to navigate through our website, read our newsletter, and most importantly, become involved in the many activities offered to you as a member of this vibrant organization.
And big thanks to all of the members who have supported me throughout the year. My life is richer as a result of relationships and experiences over the past year, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as your club President.
I extend my best wishes and much success to the new Executive Board, whom I know will serve us well.

Floral Design Betsy Nininger
Workshop 1 Workshop 1 has had a wonderful season so far. First time students were introduced to The Elements and Principles of Design. They ventured further this month into American Creative Design.
They constructed a Modern Mass Design. In this design, colors are placed in a blocked fashion.
Workshop 2
Workshop 2 had much fun with a modern creative design called Multi-Rhythmic. This design must contain two types of rhythm: continuous and broken. We used sticks from the woods, Bells Of Ireland, Asiatic Lilies, and Aspidistra leaves which were abstracted and made to crinkle and roll. Some used Palm leaves as well after trimming them to form various shapes.
We took the plunge in our last class to create Under Water Designs.

After bumping into a few ladies from the garden club on Freedom House Campus and sharing my dream for a garden on Freedom House campus, they reached out to me and asked how they could help. At our first meeting Elaine, Mary, Vicki and Sue from the Chapel Hill Garden Club came. They
helped me map out plans, decide how much was reasonable to take on and brainstormed on how to get clients involved.
They also provided invaluable wisdom regarding what, when and where to plant things. In the meantime, although the Freedom House staff was thankful and encouraging, it became clear that the staff was not able to take on any of the concrete tasks. Thankfully, Beverly Johnson, who runs SACOT (Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment, expressed excitement at the ladies in her group offering to commit a small portion of their group time to tending the garden.
Elaine, Mary, Vicki, Sue and I set dates for a “garden prep day” and first planting day. Graciously, they then paid for me to go to the Vegetable Garden workshop given by the Botanical Garden so I could be prepared.
I reached out to the local greenhouses and received donations from Southern States, Lowe’s, and 5th Season. They generously donated the majority of our seeds, starters and mulch as well as other important materials. Then the ladies from the garden club stepped in with their personal gardening supplies as well as providing deer fencing, posts and pots. They even covered the expense of having our soil tested.
Since our first planting date, I have been out in the garden with the ladies in SACOT bi-weekly. Weeding, thinning and watering are ongoing chores. So far the plants are thriving and this week I was able to offer a leafy, green contribution to the cafeteria salad from our own Freedom House Garden!
There is potential for expansion of the Freedom House Garden, and the Johnson Intern Program will be considering how our next intern can perhaps work on that. The raised bed currently in use is small and the shady location is not ideal for some plants. The support of CHGC and the SACOT program will be essential for the sustainability of this garden project. We look forward to updating you as this project takes off.

Nancy Easterling, Director of Education at NCBG, reports that they’ve just received the projected cost for the next two phases of Wonder Garden design; the detail design and the construction drawings. The estimated cost of this work is $28,000 and includes the cost of architectural sub-contracting and enrollment in the (SITES) Sustainable Sites certification. SITES is a national interdisciplinary effort to follow voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction and maintenance. This proposal is currently under review at UNC and once approved and with this specific funding in place Nancy estimates that design work will be completed by the end of June.
The construction drawings will provide the cost of each of the WG spaces as well as total estimated cost. THEN the next step will be to develop a major fundraising strategy and time line. Nancy says the first construction project will be the accessible path (they have some funding for this from a previous grant)…and the plan is that this major step will be completed in late summer, early fall.
The NCBG is pleased to announce the arrival of the nationally acclaimed art exhibition, Following in the Bartrams’ Footsteps. Seen in Philadelphia, South Florida, currently Atlanta and UC Berkley winter 2015, this is a major art exhibition of 44 original contemporary illustrations of plants discovered by celebrated American naturalists John and William Bartram. The Bartrams are considered American pioneers in botany and horticulture.
The event runs from August 30 ~ November 2, 2014 and will include lectures, workshops and outdoor exhibits.

Shirley Clapman, Sylvia Gatzy, Ruth Greenberg, Margy King and Jessie McIntyre are all Life Members of our club. President, Master Flower Show Judge, Field Trip Chair, you name it, these women have done it all during their 30+ years of club membership. Today, as always, we honor them for their many years of service and devotion to our club.
Ruth Greenberg wrote, “Born in North Dakota, I came to North Carolina as a bride at the end of World War II. I was thrilled with all of the beautiful plants and joined the garden club to learn how to identify them and grow them. I appreciated the generosity of the members in sharing their knowledge as well as sharing their plants.”
How relevant those thoughts are today as we encourage new members to join us and learn how to garden. Sincere thanks to our Life Members for their continued participation in our club!

Member Spotlight
Jo Ann Levo passed away on April 9th. It is truly a tragedy that she be
taken so early in life. She turned 62 last November. Jo Ann was a loving wife, mother and friend.
Jo Ann attended Miami University (Ohio) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Math. She began a 35-year career with IBM in Cincinnati, in Chicago then to IBM in RTP until she retired in 2009.
Jo Ann loved to travel and visited Australia, New Zealand and numerous countries throughout Europe. She was a frequent volunteer at Nasher Art Museum, the UNC Botanical Gardens and the NC Art Museum.

Dear Chapel Hill Garden Club,
I am contacting you on behalf of Urban Ministries of Wake County and our upcoming Tour D’ Coop event. Tour D’ Coop is a one-day tour of chicken coops in the Raleigh/Cary area which benefits Urban Ministries of Wake County, a local nonprofit organization fighting hunger and homelessness in the community. For our 10th anniversary Tour, we are hoping to attract even more than the past year’s over 1,000 attendees. Of course, a great event like this couldn’t be done without the help of volunteers.
The Tenth Annual Tour D’ Coop event will be on Saturday, May 17, 2014, 10 am — 4 pm. We are currently looking for day-of volunteers. We have positions available for ticket site locations, food pick-up and more.
Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions. We will have an informational volunteer meeting on Wednesday, May 7, at 6 pm at Urban Ministries for those who wish to participate.
