Ive recently been hearing that many of us in Dubai have been diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency, myself included. It strikes me as odd, but I suppose with all the bad press the sun has been getting weve all been staying out of the sun or slathering ourselves in a high factor protection. But it got me thinking, I know that my diet is not totally healthy, so what else am I missing out on? Our article on page 92 covers all the vitamins and anti-oxidants we should be taking to boost our health.

To help you get ahead of the pack last month we looked at some of Dubais nurseries, and as the little

rug-rats grow up so quickly, this month weve covered the next steps in their education. Being in Dubai not only gives us a choice of which school but also of which curriculum. From British and American to IB - it can be hard to decide whats best for your child. Everything you need to know is in this issue.

This month I was lucky enough to meet Hayley Strifler, an amazing lady whos out there doing whatever she can to help homeless senior dogs. Make sure you read all about the Dubai Senior Dog Project on page 68, any help we can all give them will be much appreciated. Remember, youre never too old to be loved...Wishing you a happy and healthy month,

Dear Louise, I loved reading your article on horse riding. The fact that youve taken it up again after some years inspired me to do the same. I had not been riding since leaving the USA 8 years ago and had not realised that the facilities here in Dubai were so good. I have just returned from my first hack, which was amazing! Thanks for giving me the push to take up a much loved passion once again. -Juliette

Hi Juliette, thanks for your email delighted to hear youre back in the saddle too!

Please could you tell me if you will be featuring your usual listing of kids summer camps that are available this summer. As a working mum, I dread the long school holidays and rely on these clubs to keep my children busy and entertained over this period. Thanks, -Indira

Nicola also advises setting realistic goals to keep burnout at bay. Its easy to get carried away and believe youre a superwoman who can conquer all. Its not fair on yourself to expect that youll be able to do everything, every day. So think big, dream big, but start small and take one step at a time.

Connector spoke to four women who all spotted a gap in the market and seized the opportunity to launch a business they are passionate about whilst their families were young.

Janelle MaloneJanelle Malone worked in retail development

and analysis for 14 years before rethinking her attitude to money during her pregnancy and

    MumpreneursInspiring

    SPECIAL feature

In 2011 SMEs (Small/Medium Enterprises) contributed 60% of the UAEs GDP, a 100% increase from 2010 according to a report from the UAE

Ministry of Economy. Women are playing an increasingly active role in the growth of small businesses, with the number of Mumpreneurs - women who actively balance running their own business with parenthood - surging in the UAE over the past few years. While many have made their mark with family focused products and services, others have used motherhood as a springboard to launch their own business in a different sector all together.

On one hand working for yourself seems an attractive option when trying to balance a career with family life, but there are certainly added pressures when it comes to juggling a family and running your own business. Nicola Tanner a life coach with Authenticity Coaching & Consultancy, and a mother of three, says get your support network in place before you start: One of the most important things to think about has to be help with the children, either a nanny, nursery or the support of your husband, parents and friends. Yes working for yourself offers flexibility but there are plenty of times that you have to make tough choices. Having someone to call on to help you manage these moments is crucial!

launching her website and blog www.womenmoneyandstyle.com.

I think everyone who has a family experiences a change in lifestyle. You want security but you also want to be present and available for your children, says Janelle.

When I left my retail career and began working for my husband in finance, my own understanding of wealth creation grew and I realised that many women need more information and practical advice in this area. The trick is understanding your spending and I thought to myself women need this written in a voice they understand in the context of everyday life - lets get to it! says Janelle.

Women, Money & Style is an educational and entertaining look at life, love and wealth for women who want to spend smarter and improve their financial wellbeing. And as the site has evolved Janelle has used her knowledge to create a series of spending guides for mums helping them to live the Dubai life without breaking the bank. According to Janelle WMS is also a nice reminder that you dont have to keep up with the Joneses. Everyones family is different. Different hobbies, goals and lifestyle preferences. The main thing is staying focused on whats important to you!

Janelle believes an important part of any parents role is educating children about money: life will always present challenges and if we have taught our kids the skills to deal with life in tough times we have succeeded as parents. Not falling into debt at a young age is one of the greatest benefits that any young person can have.

I have a lot of flexibility with the way I work, as well as the support from my husband which has been a great help. I think one big challenge is being able to switch off and be present at home when it is family time but this is key; after all it is why we chose this lifestyle.

Small businesses are an ethical force for society on many levels and we are very lucky living in a city like Dubai which is so supportive of the entrepreneur. I would like to see my

business grow the same way my children do, through self-love and a lot of learning along the way!

Bubs Kapoor & Elaine StannardBubs Kapoor and Elaine Stannard were

working in the legal field at the same company when they were pregnant (Elaine with her second child and Bubs with her first). Both were planning to return to their jobs, however, they were made redundant during maternity leave, a situation they both see as a blessing. I left work the day before going into labour and I was adamant I would be back full-time before long. In the end that choice was taken away from me but I knew as soon as I held my son that my priorities had changed anyway. You are not number one anymore says Bubs.

The two friends launched Mumcierge in March 2011, a one-stop shop resource and information guide for families in Dubai. As well as being a place to find out about all things baby and child, Mumcierge host weekly coffee mornings with visiting experts such as midwife Cecile De Scally and baby care brand Mustela.

Elaine admits that peoples perceptions of mumpreneurs can be a challenge: getting people to take you seriously is an issue. At the end of the day we are a business and the objective is to be profitable. I do believe that having both worked in male dominated environments we find it easier to assert ourselves and keep focused. Elaine originally moved to the UAE to train as a jockey.

  • 24 | MAY Connector www.mydubaiconnection.com www.mydubaiconnection.com

But for those who are serious about making it work Bubs and Elaine see the mumpreneur movement as an invaluable part of the regional economy: there is a strong undercurrent of women setting up businesses in Dubai and this has an extremely positive impact on a micro and a macro level. Women are very good at adapting to change and are often better prepared to evolve their business model in response to economic and social challenges. This is vital when it comes to building a business that lasts adds Bubs.

    Sumegha Rangwala

Sumegha Rangwala is the founder of Toys On Rent a unique toy library that allows parents to browse online and rent quality toys for kids from six months to five years old. The company also offer toys for birthday parties, events and exhibitions.

Having worked in the corporate world non stop for many years, I decided to take a break

for a year to be with my son as I knew it would be difficult to do justice to both roles. It was Sumeghas own experiences of motherhood that made her realise families were spending large amounts on toys and a rental option would fill a clear gap in the market.

When my son Aamir was a year old a very close family friend mentioned to me about the rental concept being very popular back in India and I instantly related to the idea as a mother. With Aamir being our first baby, we had bought so many toys for him and few held his attention for long. The rest just lay in the house occupying space. I did some research assuming that there would be a rental service in the UAE that I could enrol into but there was nothing. And thats when Toys On Rent started taking shape explains Sumegha.

With over 2000 members Toys On Rent has received regional awards recognition having being nominated for the SME - Incredibly Innovative Business Approach Award 2010 and the SME Business Star of the Year Award 2012. As the business has grown Sumegha has also launched the Rent a Party service.

Sumegha believes maintaining and developing a successful business is the hard part: to start a business is still relatively easy once you have an idea and a business plan. To continue, to remain focused, to not give up, and to think big is more difficult. Managing time with your little ones is easier if you have a super supportive husband, good staff at work and an affectionate nanny at home.

Mumprenuers need to have a business idea they are really passionate about, something that will motivate them and make it easier to delegate childcare and fulfil professional commitments.

Since my business is child related I usually take my son to most of our deliveries, events, exhibitions and play dates. He sees me discussing ideas, working hard at the site, dealing with my staff and he will start to understand the values of hard work, respect for others and the ways of entrepreneurship.

Nathalie Trad collection launch Dubai-based designer Nathalie Trad has

unveiled her first collection comprising sinuous outlines, deconstructed geometric shapes and earth tones, Trads eponymous line is inspired by natures complex forms and the ever-unfolding possibilities within in. Connector met up with her to find out more.

How did you get started on the pieces?Design has been an integral part of my life

for quite some time now and I feel like my inaugural collection is a true reflection of the different influences that have punctuated my creative vision in recent years. My fixation with asymmetric designs - which forms the basis of my line - began years ago. It was in 2007, while I was still studying at Paris ESMOD International, that I discovered my personal design ethos: to take classic shapes - stemming from our natural environment - and radically transform them, deconstructing and redefining the boundaries of fashion aesthetics.

Where did your inspiration come from?In 2008, while I was in New York, I came across

Albertus Sebas book of illustrations, Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. Considered one of the 18th centurys greatest natural history achievements, the book features images of a variety of insects drawn by illustrators. Believe it or not, seeing the kaleidoscope of colours on these insects carcasses immediately triggered in me a creative outpouring. I vividly remember being completely mesmerised by the complex forms, shapes and patterns captured in the book. It ended up serving as an underlying theme for my collection.

This lively Argentinian restaurant serves premium cuts of meat prepared in Asado Criollo-style on an open Parrilla grill. With both an la carte menu and a set menu offering the best of Argentinian cuisine, complimented by the largest collection of Argentinian beverages in the Middle-East, its hard to go wrong.

What we ateFor starters we chose the grilled provolone

spiced cheese with olive oil and oregano and the grilled home-made chorizo with potato salad. For the main course I choose the beef tenderloin steak and my partner went for the Parrillada Argentina, the most varied mixed grill in the world, which included baby goat, veal brisket, lamb chops, baby chicken, short ribs, sirloin steak, veal sweet breads, beef inside skirt and Argentinian sausage all served on a small grill - which looked very impressive!

VerdictWe sat outside enjoying the live

entertainment together with a great view of the Dubai Fountain. The service was fantastic - you even get a tutorial on the different cuts of meat available in a glass cabinet brought to your table. But its the food, especially the meats, where this restaurant really excels. Everything we tried was fantastically flavoured and cooked to melt in the mouth perfection.

    Definitely one to try!

A sleek and sophisticated new-comer to the Souk Al Bahar restaurant scene, Patiala is what Indian fine dining is all about. Named after the princely state in Punjab, Patiala serves traditional North Indian cuisine with immaculate presentation and pitch-perfect spicing. Their award-winning Chef Sanjay Bahl has over 20 years experience in the culinary arts, working throughout India and abroad in fine dining restaurants and hotels.

    What we ate

One thing I would definitely say about Patiala is always listen to the Chef! We let Chef Sanjay choose our entire meal and it was amazing. We started with the Patiala Chat Platter which was a selection of potatoes, vegetables and mixed fruit. We then moved onto the Kababs - the Murgh Malai Kabab (chargrilled chicken in a cardamom and Kasoori methi marinade, enriched with cream and yoghurt) and the Chargrilled Chilli Mint Prawns, we highly recommend you try.

It was then time for the main courses, and Indian food is all about sharing. Within minutes the whole table was covered in beautiful pots of delicious food. The Dal Patiala (slow cooked royal black lentils, enriched with cream and butter) was lovely, as was the lamb Dum Ka Biryani but the Butter Chicken was absolutely the dish of the day for us.

    Verdict

    GOOD food

Beneficial baby carrotsBaby carrots were originally produced by

cutting and trimming odd-shaped carrots into a uniform, smaller size, but nowadays they are made from carrots grown specifically for this purpose. They are typically washed in a chlorine-and-water solution before packaging to provide protection from food borne illnesses by reducing bacteria. Cooking baby carrots is very much

like cooking regular carrots, you can add them to any of your favourite dishes. Whether raw, stewed, steamed; they can be consumed as part of a main dish, a side dish or even added to your fresh salads. Antioxidant compounds found in carrots such as beta-carotene and Vitamin C, promote good vision and help protect against cardiovascular disease and cancer.

    HOME & garden

From DRAB to FABTurning your tired and dated furniture to unique statement pieces

    www.mydubaiconnection.com

Whether your style is shabby-chic, eclectic or clean line modernist, or you just want to create a new look, there are

three simple ways to make a style impact with your furniture. Makeover-ing and repurposing furniture is a great way to save money and get creative, and maybe even get exactly what you want. Standout signature pieces can be expensive. If you havent got an old piece of junk to makeover and want to get creative, why not choose a cheap and simple item like an Ikea side table to start your project with.

Making over old or pre-loved pieces1. A fresh lick of paint - Turn ordinary to

extraordinary with a pop of colour. Take an antique look heavy frame mirror; consider spray painting it white or silver for a clean and subtle finish, or fire truck red or canary yellow for a modern look, finishing with a gloss. Or how about a distressed effect eggshell green or blue look achieved by sanding raised areas or edges afterwards. For the best distressed or shabby-chic effect, use multiple coats of different colour paints and sand through the layers when it dries.

    2. Replace hardware - Handles and door knobs to studs, nails and corner caps, hardware can transform the look of any piece.

    3. Upholster - Upholstering simple seat cushions is one thing, but you may want to leave it to the professionals to tackle the larger items like armchairs and sofas.

Repainting furniture quick guideSanding removes the stain, gloss or paint

layers on wooden furniture. Dont be tempted to skip this step if you want a finish that wont be prone to chipping. For small areas like chair legs and getting into nooks and crannies, sand paper may do the trick. However, for larger pieces like a table or dresser top, a small electrical sander will work best as it can be time consuming and tiring to do manually. Start off with an 80-100 grit sandpaper until most of the stain is removed, and switch to

    Connector Master Layout - May 2013.indd 46 4/24/13 7:04 PM

a 150 grit or higher to smooth and remove any remaining stain. Its not necessary to sand right down to the wood grain, just enough to remove the sheen so the primer and paint will stick. Remove the residual dust with a damp cloth or vacuum.

Priming your piece using spray primer gives a nice even finish, and should be applied in 2-3 thin coats allowing 10 minutes drying time in between. Grey is best to use under dark paint, and white for under lighter colours.

Paint depending on the finish you want, and choose from matt, gloss or semi gloss accordingly. Mix the paint well and use a clean, regular bristle brush to apply a thin layer using long strokes. Do not use a foam brush or roller. Applying more thin coats as opposed to fewer thick coats can dramatically affect the quality and durability of the finish.

    Hardware guide

There are three main ways you can update your furniture by replacing or adding hardware.

Handles - swapping wood or brass for chrome handles can bring a dated piece in line with todays style.

Knobs come in all shapes and sizes so go wild with all the choices - make a statement or match another piece with this simple replacement.

Trim - Adding tacks, bolts or spikes can really make a statement around the rim or legs of a coffee table, chair legs, and on frames or mirrors.Existing old hardware should be removed

before painting, and new hardware applied afterwards.

    Upholstery guide

When choosing fabrics for upholstered furniture, keep in mind tightly woven fabrics tend to wear the best. Durability is determined by the number of threads per square inch rather than the thickness of the yarn used. In addition to their look and feel, factors to consider are wearability, cleanability and sensitivity to direct sunlight.

You dont have to go matchy, matchy with the rest of your furniture, so choose a fabric that will complement it instead. Go for bolder patterns on arm chairs and ottomans to create a great statement piece, and play it safer on large sofas. Fabrics like velvet, velour or silk create both a luxurious and a soft and cosy atmosphere, while cottons, linens and wools give a fresh and natural look.

Upcycling means to use old items differently than their original intended use here are some unique repurposing ideas: Window, door and crate coffee tables - Use

an old wooden window frame and glass on simple wooden legs, or an ornate door or wooden crate.

Bar-stool or wine barrel table - Use two old stools to support a plywood top, or place a round glass top on a wine barrel (if you can manage to get your hands on one) for a rustic farmhouse look.

A picture frame tray - Lay the frame face up and just add handles. You can insert fabric, wrapping paper or wallpaper under the glass to creat your desired effect.

    Essential oils

    50 | MAY Connector

    HOME & garden

Many dentists, doctors offices and other places with harsh scents are utilising aromatherapy to make their clients visit to the waiting room more pleasurable. Some essential oils have been created for these types of businesses specifically to relax the prospective patients. Selecting specific fragrances, for any particular business, is definitely a personal choice, although some research might be beneficial when making the decision.

When you have decided which scent to use, there are several methods to introduce it to the home or workplace. Aromatherapy diffusers are great, because they can be purchased with built-in timers that go off at regular intervals during the day.

Some other areas that might benefit from essential oils are schools. Certain oils have been found to increase productivity and sense of wellbeing in the people exposed to the scent. This type of therapy would be a wonderful addition to any environment where behaviour is an issue.

Some of the most commonly recommended scents for places of business include vanilla, cinnamon, orange, lavender and lemon. These lovely calming fragrances are very familiar and most people enjoy them. Many of the more exotic essential oils are far less well-known, and can be a little bit of an acquired taste.

So next time you enter your home or a place of business take a deep breath and find out what your visitors and colleagues smell. How does the scent make you feel and what impression does it give immediately? Essential oils can make your home and your office much more pleasurable and inviting.

There are countless studies into exactly how aromatherapy benefits us in the various aspects of our lives. Two areas that can be positively

impacted by the application of essential oils are the home and the workplace. The way a home or a business smells can definitely effect how the family, customers, or workers feel while they are there. The first impression of any building comes through the nose and this fact could have ramifications on the success or failure of any given place.

Under Sharia Law, there is a fixed distribution of assets upon death of the deceased owner and there is no concept of right of survivorship

( i.e. where property passes to the surviving joint owner). By structuring your property into an offshore company, you ensure that Sharia Law will most definitely not apply to your assets and that lengthy probate proceedings are avoided.

Since 1st January 2011, the only offshore company that can be used to hold real estate owned in Dubai is the Jebel Ali Offshore Company. This company does not allow you to trade, give you residency nor work permits. The shares of the Jebel Ali Offshore Company can be held in personal names but it is usually better to have the shares held by an offshore company 100% such as those in common law offshore jurisdictions such as the British Virgin Islands.

Doing so means that if a death occurs, Sharia Law will not apply as your assets would be held in the name of the offshore entity and not in individual names. The probate process would also take place in foreign courts.

The offshore entity can also be designed to suit joint investors. So a group of investors can hold shares in an offshore entity which ultimately protects their portion of shares in the property. It also provides confidentiality and privacy. Thus providing additional protection for your assets.

    BUSINESS & legal

    Opting for offshore property ownership

    ADVERTORIAL

If you already own property, you can transfer all freehold property held in your own personal name into the name of the offshore entity. Being a company, it is considered a legal entity and can own any asset. So bank accounts, stocks and shares and properties in the UAE and internationally can all be held by an offshore company.

At any rate, whenever you do decide that the offshore property option is for you, there are legal consultants who can help tailor solutions to best address your concerns so you get to invest and rest easy.

The inheritance laws in Dubai are not as straightforward nor the same as those back in the UK or the European Union. If a foreigner owns

property in Dubai and passes away, the laws of their home country may not apply to their assets.

    Your childs education

One of the most apparent aspects of todays educational needs is

that people have more than one career during their lifetime. We have all asked a young child What do you want to be when you grow up? yet the emphasis now is on preparing young people for a changing world and giving them the skills and attitudes to deal with whatever they may encounter.

Traditionally, schools in the UAE have followed the British National Curriculum (NC), but more schools in Dubai are now adopting the International Baccalaureate (IB). So, what are the main features of these two curriculum models and which one might suit your childs learning style best?

    The British National Curriculum

Before the age of 5, children follow a play-based curriculum. This puts an emphasis on physical, personal, social and emotional development with listening, understanding and speaking skills to foster good communication.

The National Curriculum begins at the age of 5 and students are placed in Key Stages according to their age. Key Stage One - Years 1 & 2 - 5 to 7 years old. Key Stage Two - Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 - 7 to 11

    years old. Key Stage Three - Years 7, 8 & 9 - 11 to 14

    years old. Key Stage Four - Years 10 & 11 - 14 to 16 year

    olds with GCSE examinations.

Students then progress to non-compulsory education, Years 12 & 13 where they

traditionally take their Advanced Level exams in preparation for higher education such as universities and colleges.

The National Curriculum is composed of 10 subjects - English, maths, science, geography, history, design

technology, art, physical education and music, while

information and communication technology is seen as a subject that is

taught across subjects as well as in its own right. Students in Dubai also follow Ministry of Education guidelines concerning Arabic and Islamic Studies. Most schools also teach a third language such as French from Key Stage 2.

    The International Baccalaureate (IB)

The IB offers four programmes for students aged 3 to 19 years. The Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC). The PYP

The PYP is for students aged 3 to 12 years and focuses on developing the child as an enquirer. The curriculum is guided by six interrelated themes of global significance - sharing the planet, who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how we organise ourselves and how the world works, and is explored using knowledge and skills from the arts, social studies, language, sciences, mathematics, and personal, social and physical education.

    KIDS' corner

We are now living in the Information Age and education is constantly trying to keep up with an ever-changing world. Globally, school curriculums are

responding to the changes in educational needs, and in the UAE, the choice of schools is increasing as the country grows and develops.

The MYPe Middle Years Programme is for 11 to

16 year olds and contains eight subject groups - humanities, technology, mathematics, arts, sciences, physical education, language A and language B, together with a core made up of ve areas of interaction - approaches to learning, community and service, environment, health and social education and human ingenuity.

    The Diploma Programme

e two-year Diploma Programme is aimed at students aged 16 to 19 and leads to a qualication that is widely recognised by the worlds leading universities. e curriculum contains six subject groups - language A and language B, experimental sciences, the arts, mathematics and computer science and individuals and societies, together with a core made up of three compulsory parts - extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action and service. Of the six subjects, three are normally studied at higher level and the remaining three at standard level.

    The IBCC

e IBCC is the newest oering for students aged 16 to 19. It provides a tailored, career-focused pathway made up of internationally recognised IB Diploma courses, approved career-related study and a unique IBCC core. e IBCC allows schools to create their own distinct IBCC programmes to meet the needs, backgrounds and contexts of their students.

The American CurriculumParents considering the American curriculum

may nd that each school varies slightly in the subjects they oer. is is because in America, local government determines the curriculum. e ages for compulsory education vary from state to state, starting at 5 to 8 and ending between 14 and 18. Education is divided into three levels - elementary, middle school and high school.

Schools have to ensure they respond to the No Child left Behind Act so they will all provide the same core subjects such as maths, science and English and students have to take standardised tests in these areas.

At elementary and middle, schools tend to introduce children to the broad range of knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. e major goals are achieving basic literacy and numeracy, as well as establishing foundations in science, mathematics, geography, history and other social sciences. High school focuses on preparing students for higher education and will have the exibility to tailor the subjects that are oered to meet the needs of the students. It is important that parents ask the right questions to make sure that they are fully aware of what is being oered.

    Comparing the curriculums

All three curriculums provide a balanced educational experience if they are taught well, a factor which is down to the organisation and management in individual schools.

e IB programme covers much of the traditional knowledge areas of the NC, but in a cross-curricular way, encouraging students to be independent learners and to see the way in which areas of knowledge link to each other.

In the rst instance, the NC was more subject based with even young children learning in chunks of knowledge. Current practice is to integrate the subjects where possible and to value the creativity of the student. More importance is placed on how we learn and why we learn, though students are still assessed on their knowledge and understanding of topics covered.

e strengths of the IB programme are that children are taught to ask questions and see links between their learning. Students are encouraged to look at the bigger picture and to understand they must be exible in the ways in which they use their knowledge.

  • 56 | MAY Connector www.mydubaiconnection.com www.mydubaiconnection.com

The American curriculum has been criticised for not being standardised, which doesnt allow parents to compare the results of the schools in the same way as the IB or NC. But it could be argued that this allows flexibility for individual schools to meet the needs of its students. As with any schooling system parents need to be assured of a rigorous assessment process which ensures that their childs needs are being meet and that appropriate progress is being made.

Making the right choice for your child

As with any choice, choosing a school curriculum is very personal and being informed is important. If you are leaning towards one curriculum type, take the time to find out more. Visit the school to get a feel for their ethos - two schools that teach the same curriculum may feel very different, as the formal curriculum is only part of what schools teach. The so called hidden curriculum - how a school functions, how people are treated, if the school is an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment are all important factors to take into consideration.

You also need to consider your long-term plans. If you know that youre returning to, or moving to a country that follows a certain curriculum and that your children will have to work in that model, then it makes sense to follow the same curriculum in the UAE. If you have an older child and know which university they want to go to, it makes sense to follow the curriculum that best suits their future needs. Whatever curriculum you choose, being supportive and involved in your childs education will help them make the best of the opportunities the school has to offer.
