We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their tenderness, care, and compassion, for their intuition and encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers this day. Keep, strengthen, and refresh them in your loving care. May they be blessed by our open-hearted love and gratitude. Amen.

WEEKLY LETTER - MOTHER’S DAY Mary is the mother of Jesus. This means that Jesus, as a man, was brought up by Mary and Joseph. His human qualities and character were formed and influenced by virtues of His parents. We read in scripture that Christ went through the land of Palestine doing good, and we begin to realize that His human goodness was really the love of God being translated into human terms. We are bound to acknowledge too that Mary had a maternal share in God’s love. It is a common human experience that the mother’s features are recognizable in the child, and this is also true in the case of Mary and Jesus. Mary’s role in the miracle of the Incarnation was not completed when Jesus was born. It was a continuous task, involving the human formation of the young man, as He grew up from infancy to childhood and from childhood to adulthood. How this was accomplished is hidden from us. Only Mary knew the secrets of Jesus’ upbringing, and kept them in her heart. She kept to herself the first word her Son ever spoke and meditated on it in her heart. God, in His humanity, formed His first word, and there can be little doubt, that like so many other children, His first word was “Mama.” - Fr. Ted Rothrock

STEWARDSHIP - A THANK YOU A letter of gratitude (dated April 23) from Teresa at the St. Martin de Porres Center:

On behalf of the many men, women and children that have received a free, hot meal, a box of much needed pantry food, or needed clothing. I am abundantly grateful for you. Your donations to help continue the work of St. Martin de Porres Center is so helpful in making sure that the meal program, and all other help that is offered to the needy in our community, can continue. In February, your donation was $305. In the same month, we served 7,307 free hot meals. In March the donation from St. Paul was $1,107 and we served 8,234 free, hot meals. In April, the monthly donation was $3,592.16. To everyone that donated any amount, I am so thankful to you for your help. St. Martin has now been in out community for 54 years. St. Martin would never have been able to help anyone without the love and support of St. Paul parish. St. Paul continues to be our Mother Church as we work to help reduce suffering in our Marion/Grant County Community. Many, many thanks for your help!

This annual trip provides students an enriching camp program with a Catholic component, helping them to grow in faith during their camp time. THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD Next Sunday we will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. This is when Jesus and His disciples gathered together for the last time. While they were together, Jesus was taken up to Heaven and disappeared into the clouds. The most important concept about the Ascension for children to understand is that Jesus is always with us even though He is not present physically. It is similar to when a parent goes away on a business trip. They may be gone, but they still love us and they will come back. Sometimes our feelings do not allow us to see the whole picture. We need to take comfort and encourage children to take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus always keeps His promises. Here are some family activities to help you talk about this together.

Be sure to make connections between the new life of Jesus’ resurrection and the new life we see in nature in the springtime. Search for a bird’s nest in your yard to see if there are eggs inside. Look up information about birds hatching online. Kids love baby animals. Talk about how diWerent baby birds look from their parents — and how diWerent kids look compared to when they were born!
