WEEKLY NOTE W ith so many attacks against Pope Francis and the Catholic Church, let us

reflect on St. Catherine of Sienna and how saints dealt with such controversies.

St. Catherine of Sienna St. Catherine, the 24th of 25 children, was born on March 25, 1347, Palm

Sunday, in the town of Siena, Italy, about 150 miles north of Rome. At that time the plague was assailing Siena, taking some 80,000 lives. Half her siblings did not survive to adulthood, including her twin-sister. Her parents, Giacomo (a fabric dyer) and Lapa (a poet’s daughter) lived a simple, lower middle-class life. Giacomo and Lapa filled family life with Christian piety. Her family nicked-named Catherine Euphrosyne—a Greek name for an early Christian saint meaning Joy—she was so joyful and merry that she charmed everyone.

At age 6 she had a vision of Christ enthroned with the papal tiara, surrounded by Saints Peter, Paul, and John. Her brother—not knowing what was happening—interrupted her and the vision disappeared, causing her great disappointment. A year later Catherine offered herself to Christ in virginity. Her parents opposed her entering religious life, so she made her vows privately at home and dedicated herself to prayer, penance, and works of charity, often giving her allotment of food and clothing to the needy. She looked upon her father as Christ, her mother as the Virgin Mary, and her brothers as the apostles, humbly serving them as an act of serving God.

When she was 16, her sister, Bonaventura, died while giving birth. Her parents wanted Catherine marry the widower. The future saint refused, fasting

and cutting off her hair. The parents finally relented. Shortly afterwards, St. Dominic appeared to her and she joined the Mantellate, a Dominican third order that allowed her to remain living at home—she was the only Mantellate who was not a widow.

At 21, Our Lady appeared with the child Jesus, who gave Catherine a ring—only visible to her—telling her: “I, your Creator and Savior, espouse you in the faith, that you will keep ever pure until you celebrate your eternal nuptials with me in Heaven.” Later she received the stigmata, but it too—at her request—remained invisible.

In 1370, in an extended trance and vision, God asked her to enter public life and learn to read and write, which was quite difficult as an adult. Hearing of her mystical experiences, people of all walks of life—from ordinary workers to influential nobles—came to her for spiritual insights, in person or through letter; over 400 letters have been preserved.

Like St. Joan of Arc, some accused her of being a fraud, and so the General Chapter of the Dominicans in Florence interrogated her in 1374. Instead of condemning her they appointed the Friar Raimundo da Capua, future Master General of the Order, to guide her spiritually. In 1376, the city of Florence, at war with the Papal States, sent her and her chaplain as ambassadors to the Pope. Although the mission failed, she convinced Pope Gregory XI—against the advice of the Cardinals—to leave Avignon, return to Rome, and to reform the clergy and the Papal States: the exile of the papacy to Avignon ended on January 17, 1377.

When she returned to Siena she began writing (dictating) her spiritual masterpiece, Libro della Divina Dottrina—Book of Divine Teachings, commonly known in English as the Dialogue of Divine Providence. In it God the Father describes Christ as the Bridge between heaven and earth. The soul climbs steps to the Bridge—Jesus’ feet, side, and mouth—by detaching herself from sin, then growing in virtues and charity, and finally by a loving union with God.

When the Great Schism broke out, Pope Urban called St. Catherine to Rome to write letters on his behalf seeking unity. She offered her life for Church unity and for the pope, enduring three months of agonizing suffering before she died in Rome on April 29, 1380, at the age of 33. Her last words were, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit and soul.”

She was canonized in 1461 and declared a doctor of the Church in 1970.

C on tantos ataques contra el Papa Francisco y contra la Iglesia católica, reflexionemos sobre cómo Santa

Catalina de Siena y otros santos trataron tales controversias.

Santa Catalina de Siena Santa Catalina, la penúltima de 25 hijos, nació el 25 de

marzo de 1347, en un Domingo de Ramos, en la ciudad de Siena, Italia, a unas 150 millas al norte de Roma. En aquellos tiempos, la plaga atacaba a Siena, llevándose unas 80.000 vidas. La mitad de sus hermanos no llegaron a la edad adulta, incluyendo su hermana gemela. Sus padres, Giacomo (un secador de tela) y Lapa (hija de un poeta) vivieron una vida simple de clase media. Giacomo y Lapa llenaron la vida familiar de piedad cristiana. Św. Katarzyna Sieneńska Św. Katarzyna przyszła na świat w Niedzielę Palmową,

25 marca 1347 roku w Sienie, około 150 mil na północ od Rzymu. Była przedostatnim z dwudziestu pięciorga rodzeństwa w średniozamożnej rzemieślniczej rodzinie. W tym czasie Sienę pustoszyła zaraza morowa, która pochłonęła prawie 80 000 ofiar. Połowa rodzeństwa Katarzyny, w tym siostra bliźniaczka, nie dożyła pełnoletności. Jej ojciec, farbiarz Giacomo i matka Lapa, córka poety, wiedli skromne i pobożne życie. Członkowie rodziny nazywali ją Eufrozyną, od greckiego imienia wczesnochrześcijańskiej świętej oznaczającego Radość – tak wielka była jej pogoda ducha.

Ponieważ rodzice sprzeciwiali się jej wstąpieniu w służbę Bogu, Katarzyna z własnego domu uczyniła klasztorną celę, wiodąc życie wypełnione modlitwą, pokutą i służbą, często oddając swoje ubrania i jedzenie potrzebującym. W swym ojcu zaczęła upatrywać Chrystusa, w matce Maryję a w braciach apostołów, zaś w pokornej służbie im – służbę Bogu.

Kiedy Katarzyna miała 16 lat jej siostra, Bonawentura, zmarła podczas porodu. Zgodnie z życzeniem rodziców Katarzyna miała poślubić owdowiałego

małżonka, ale wbrew ich woli Katarzyna obcięła włosy i zaczęła post. Widząc jej nieugięty sprzeciw, rodzice ustąpili. Wkrótce po tym Katarzynie objawił się św. Dominik i wstąpiła do III zakonu Dominikanek, do którego należały pobożne niewiasty, tzw. mantellate. Nie były one w ścisłym sensie siostrami i Katarzynie, która jako jedyna z nich nie była wdową, pozwolono pozostać w domu rodzinnym.

W wieku 16 lat Dziewica Sieneńska doświadczyła objawienia Maryi z dzieciątkiem Jezus, podczas którego Chrystus dokonał z nią mistycznych zaślubin, zostawiając jej jako trwały znak niewidzialną obrączkę ze słowami: „Zaślubiam cię w wierze, Ja, twój Stwórca i Zbawiciel i dopóki w niebie nie będziesz ze mną odprawiać godów wiecznych, niech ten ślub będzie nienaruszony”. W późniejszym czasie Katarzyna otrzymała również stygmaty, które ukrywała do końca życia.

W 1370 roku podczas objawienia św. Katarzyna została wezwana do podjęcia publicznej działalności apostolskiej. Musiała w tym celu opanować umiejętność czytania i pisania, co w dorosłym życiu nie przyszło jej z łatwością . Rychło zebrało się wokół niej grono uczniów różnorakiego stanu i

Papież stanął w Rzymie 17 stycznia 1377 roku.

Po powrocie do Sieny św. Katarzyna podyktowała dzieło Libro della Divina Dottrina – O Bożej Nauce, które powszechnie nosi tytuł „O Bożej Opatrzności”. Przedstawia w nim przekazany przez Boga obraz Chrystusa jako mostu łączącego niebo i ziemię. Po tym moście składającym się z trzech stopni – stóp, boku i ust Jezusa – dusza wstępuje, wyrzekając się grzechu, rozwijając przymioty serca i ostatecznie jednocząc się z Bogiem w miłości i wierze.

Po rozpoczęciu Wielkiej Schizmy papież Urban VI wezwał Dziewicę Sieneńską do Rzymu, aby w jego imieniu działała na rzecz jedności w Kościele. Ostatnie trzy miesiące jej życia upłynęły w ogromnym cierpieniu. Św. Katarzyna zmarła 29 kwietnia 1380 roku w Rzymie, w wieku 33 lat, ze słowami „Ojcze w Twoje ręce powierzam mojego ducha i ciało”. Do chwały ołtarzy św. Katarzynę wyniesiono w 1461 roku, a w 1970 nadano jej tytuł Doktora Kościoła.

MOTHER’S DAY NOVENA This annual Novena of Masses will start on Sunday, May 12, at the 11 am Mass.

Nine Masses will be offered for the mothers whose names are submitted. If you would like to include your mother, a family member or a friend, in this special Novena, please submit their names to the Parish Office.

Mass cards are available and may be obtained from the back of the church and in the Parish Office. You can add all the names you wish (living or deceased). The donation for these Masses is each person’s choice.
