The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want -Psalm 23
3rd Sunday of Easter / 3er Domingo de Pascua 2
From the desk of Fr.
“This Too Shall Pass!” Sometimes I feel like this whole thing is not real. I wish I could wake up and realize that it’s a bad dream. But it’s not! At this point, Coronavirus has infected approximately 3,000,000 people around the world and killed over 200,000 people. About 1,000,000 people have been infected in the United States and 55,000 people have died. These are not just numbers. They are human beings. Two and half months ago, the tales of Covid-19’s fatalities in other countries sounded incredulous. We felt sympathy. A few of our leaders and television personages assured us that we were safe. We innocently believed and went about our businesses. But alas, it was suddenly here. As the rate of infections spiked and the death toll mounted, there was a palpable panic leading to shutdowns. We were all relieved and happy to stay at home if that was what it took. As a priest, I must confess that it was a huge struggle for me. God is part of the cure and solution and NOT a “non-essential”. But as a Church, we want what is best. So we went from watching our favorite shows and games to watching hard-to-believe stats or numbers on our televisions, computers, handsets and news papers. “It will soon be over. We have the expertise to deal with anything”, we told ourselves. Well, “not so fast!”, the scientists seemed to say. As Dr. Anthony Fauci and his colleagues spelled out what we were up against and the human cost, we went from shock, disbelief, disillusionment, numbness to almost indifference. Right now, it’s pure confusion. When should the economy be reopened? Should it remain closed and for how long? Has Coronavirus come to stay? What should be our new forms of social interaction? Are they scientifically proven to work? Meanwhile, there seem to be three races going on simultaneously. Coronavirus appears to be racing to infect and kill as many as possible. Scientists are racing to find a cure or a vaccine. And leaders are racing to find an answer to what seems an impasse. Not to mention the race among the conspiracy theorists. Wow, what a time! BUT, in the midst of all the craziness, one thing stubbornly refuses to go away around the world. HOPE. Call it humans’ audacity of hope or American optimism - it doesn’t matter. Hope has remained steadfast and has kept us all afloat. “This too shall pass” has become our new mantra. Thus, in our faith and trust in God, let us all hold on tight to hope. For our Lord and SAVIOR, Jesus Christ assures us that “In the world you have tribulations; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). So stay strong, safe, steadfast in your prayers and unwavering in your hope.

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — All peoples called by God will receive the gift of the Spirit if they repent and are baptized (Acts 2:14a, 36-41). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — Once we were like straying sheep; but now we have been returned to the shepherd, our guardian (1 Peter 2:20b-25). Gospel — The shepherd leads the sheep out into pastures of abundant life (John 10:1-10). JESUS SAVES Be honest with yourself. Have you ever gone astray? Have you ever given in to temptation or weakness? Do you sometimes feel that you need someone to help you get your life on back on track? Most people could answer yes to any of these questions. As people of faith, we know that Jesus understands the struggles we face and gave his life to save us from our human frailty. The Lord knows that we need help in order to live as God’s people in the world. There are people and powers that seek to mislead us, who offer a way that may for a time be appealing, even though it does not lead to the true way of life, love, and peace. We can be readily dissuaded and distracted from the ways of holiness. We easily lose our way, lured by the trappings of material possessions, wealth, or social status. Jesus is our only real way, the door that leads to meaning and peace in this earthly time, and to life everlasting.

DID YOU KNOW? If you see something, say something
We see this warning in airports and schools, but experts say it’s also a great way for parents to think about Internet safety for their children. One of the best ways to protect children using the Internet is to actually engage with them in
what they’re doing: play the games they play and check out their profile pages with them. Discuss online respect and rules for what can and cannot be shared. Regular conversation and monitoring helps keep children safe online. For more information, read the article by Catholic News Service, “Vigilance by parents and their children called key to safe internet use.”
¿SABIA USTED?
