  • CHAMPION Victorian stayer Sweet It Isbecame Australian greyhound racingshighest stakes winner last Thursday nightwhen storming to back-to-back victoriesin a drama-charged Group 1 RSN SandownCup, the worlds richest distance event.

In claiming the Sandown Cups $175,000winners purse, Sweet It Is, owned andtrained by Braden Finn, took her careerearnings to $828,515, breaking formerrival Xylia Allens previous record of$743,730.

It was Sweet It Is fifth Group 1 successand first in 2015, with the November 11daughter of Mogambo and Off Springerhaving won, in order, last yearsAssociation Cup, Sandown Cup, NationalDistance Championship and Bold TreaseCarnival Cup.

She became the fifth stayer to win con-secutive Sandown Cups, following PaulsThunder (1970-71), Lizrene (1972-73), theremarkable four-time victor Bold Trease(1986-87-88-89) and Irma Bale (2012-13).

Shes a freak, a proud Braden Finn said. Dogs like her dont come along too

often and its unbelievable to go back-to-back in such a prestigious race.

It was an honour just to make the final

again and to be honest I wouldve beenhappy to run second. Space Star had hisbox (eight) and I thought he was a moral soI hadnt thought about breaking the prize-money record at all. I was only thinkingabout the $50,000 for running second!

Sweet It Is has only raced sparingly in2015 due to a seasonal spell, with lastThursdays historic Sandown Cup defencejust her seventh start for the year and forBraden Finn, who took over the trainingduties when Darren McDonald was sus-pended by Greyhound Racing Victoria foralleged involvement in the live baitingscandal.

After showing glimpses of her best inSydney and the Group 3 Lizrene atSandown, Sweet It Is earned the right todefend her Sandown Cup crown with atrademark barnstorming last-to-first 41.82heat victory, her first win since November29.

While Finn was delighted and a littlerelieved - with Sweet It Is return to win-ning form, he had all but conceded theSandown Cup to Robert Brittons SpaceStar after a scintillating 41.26 heat per-formance, the second fastest time everrecorded over Sandowns 715m course.

After drawing ideally in eight, Space Stardominated the Sandown Cup market, start-ing at a prohibitive $1.30, with Sweet It Isthe only other runner at single figures, exiting box two as a $5.80 chance.

Space Star began sweetly from his out-side alley but was held out early by kennel-

mate Cosmic VeeBee, while Sweet ItIs settled closer thannormal in fifth posi-tion.

Space Star raced tothe lead at the win-ning post the firsttime but the com-plexion of the racethen changed dra-matically when hefaltered in his strideand drifted back, eventually finishingsixth and being diag-

nosed with a torn monkey muscle.Sweet It Is took full advantage of Space

Stars misfortune, threading her waythrough the packing field and chargingclear to defeat Lady Toy by 5 lengths in41.49, her 18th win from 58 starts.

It was a different feeling this yearbecause I was training her myself, Finnexplained.

When Darren (McDonald) had her I justhad to turn up and have a few beers withmy mates and the next thing you knew herrace was on. I was a bit nervous in theparade before the race but everyone think-ing Space Star was unbeatable took someof the pressure off me.

I was probably more nervous the weekbefore because she hadnt won for a whileso her heat win took a bit of weight off myshoulders.

She showed me she was pretty close toher best when she ran second in theLizrene a couple of weeks ago. She wasonly beaten a head in around 41.50, whichwas only a length or two off her best timeat Sandown and shes 3 now so that wasa pretty good run at her age.

When she draws inside she seems to beable to hold her spot a bit better and whenshe was running fifth at the winning post Ilooked ahead to see where Space Star was

and that was when the mishap happenedwith him.

It was unfortunate for Space Stars con-nections but after that I thought Sweet It Isshould probably win from here and I wasvery confident when she was about to hitthe front at the 700 boxes!

Shes so clever in a field. She keeps pick-ing them off one by one and nine times outof ten she pulls the right rein, but shesbeen doing it for 50 starts now so I sup-pose shes used to it!

Finn sprung somewhat of a surprise post-race when he revealed that Sweet It Is willnow head to New Zealand for this Sundays(May 31) heats of the $80,000 Group 1Duke Of Edinburgh Silver Collar over 779metres, to be held in Auckland.

Shes booked to fly over to New Zealandon Wednesday morning (yesterday), Finnsaid.

The only Group 1 race coming up inAustralia is the Gold Cup in Queenslandand I expected Space Star would be goingup for that so I thought the New Zealandrace might be an easier option.

The Silver Collar is over 780 metres, which will really suit Sweet It Is becausethe further the better for her and shes anexperienced traveller so that wont worryher at all.

Sweet It Is broke Australian greyhound racing's prizemoneyrecord when going back-to-back in the Sandown Cup, the

world's richest staying event (pic: GRV/BlueStream Pictures)

ROBERT Brittons Sandown Cup hoodoocontinued last Thursday night with Brittondescribing odds-on favourite Space Starsdefeat in the worlds richest staying race asa horror story.

Britton has won just about every majordistance event on the Australian calendarbar the Sandown Cup and the Holy Grailfinally seemed to be within the masterVictorian trainers grasp when his $1.30favourite Space Star strode to the lead at thewinning post the first time.

However, Space Star went amiss soon afteras he finished sixth to back-to-back heroineSweet It Is, with the son of Bekim Bale andTonto Tears later diagnosed with a torn mon-key muscle that is likely to sideline thethree-time Group 1 winner for at least amonth.

It was like a horror story but you cantchange it and Im pretty confident hell come

back from it, a philosophical Robert Brittonsaid on Friday.

Hes torn a monkey muscle. Five minutesafter the race it had blown up like an eggand by the time we got him home it was likea football.

Unfortunately it happened on the wrongnight but hell survive and of all the injurieshe could have got it was on the lesser end ofthe scale.

When they falter like he did youre wor-ried that theyve done a back muscle or ahock, which wouldve been much worse, soit was the lesser of a few evils.

Theyre usually out for about a month orfive weeks with this type of injury so hellmiss Brisbane (Group 1 Gold Cup). Im notsure whats coming up after that but welljust concentrate on getting him right beforewe start looking too far ahead.

    Wheeler Resists Fernando Stud Lure

PAUL Wheeler is resisting the temptation toretire superstar youngster Fernando Bale tostud for the time being - despite beinginundated with interest from breeders.

Fernando Bale continued his breathtakingrun of form at Sandown Park last Thursdaywhen extending his winning streak to ten inthe Group 3 Bill Collins Memorial, with areturn to Sydney where hes already wonthe Golden Easter Egg and National Derby for the Group 1 Peter Mosman Classic nexton the agenda.

However owner/breeder Paul Wheeler con-cedes the pressure to retire the AndreaDailly-trained March 13 son of KelsosFusileer and Chloe Allen is mounting daily.

Weve been inundated with interest frombreeders wanting to use the dog at stud butat this stage were trying to keep him on thetrack, Wheeler said.

Hes still very young and I like dogs tohave around 40 to 50 starts before puttingthem to stud but theres been so much inter-est that it might get to the point where wehave to seriously consider retiring him.

Weve drawn a limited amount of sementhat were going to use with half a dozen ofour own bitches but we havent let any outto the public at this stage.

Hes outstanding and the fact hes by a USsire makes him very attractive to breeders. Ialways start stud dogs off at $1650 but thisdog will have to start higher purely becauseof the demand therell be for him.

After returning an unprecedented $1.04when winning the Group 1 Harrison-Dawsonat Sandown one week earlier, Fernando Balestarted at a generous $1.20 in lastThursdays $25,000 to-the-winner BillCollins Memorial.

Drawn in box one for the second week run-ning, Fernando Bale was dominant onceagain, leading throughout in a scorching29.23 the slowest of his five straightSandown successes as he defeated the gal-lant Lamia Bale, winner of the Group 1Sapphire Crown a week earlier, by 1 lengths.

It was Fernando Bales 15th win from hislast 16 starts, with the defeat being a secondto Lamia Bale in an Australian Cup heat, withWheeler rating him as potentially the bestgreyhound his familys remarkable produc-tion line has produced.

Weve been extremely fortunate to havesome outstanding dogs over the years likeWinifred Bale and Kantarn Bale but ifFernando Bale goes on to do what we thinkhe can he could surpass those dogs and bethe best weve ever had, Wheeler offered.

Most greyhounds have their strengthsand weaknesses theyre fast early andweak or slow early and strong but thisbloke looks like the perfect greyhound.

Every time I see him race I think hes due

to miss the starttonight but ithasnt happenedyet and I keepthinking howgood is thisbloke?

I think theword championis used too easilyand too often ingreyhound racingand the otherracing codes forthat matter butthis dog is cer-tainly heading inthat direction.

The scarything about himis that Ive alwaysbelieved - and itsbeen historicallyproven with ourbreed over thelast 30 years -that a grey-hounds primetime for racing is between 2 and 3 yearsof age and Fernando Bale is just over two sohis best could still be in front of him.

Another reason Id like to keep him racingis that our industry has been copping apounding over the last few months and adog like Fernando Bale is a real positive forthe sport and gets people talking aboutgreyhound racing for all the right reasons.

Wheeler returned last week from a visit toChina with several other prominentAustralian greyhound racing identities andhe was suitably impressed with what he saw.

Over the years Ive heard a lot of rumoursabout China so I went there on a fact-findingmission to see it for myself and I couldnthave been more impressed, Wheeler said.

Greyhound racing is still in its infancy inmainland China its only been going since2000 but what theyve been able toachieve in 15 years is astronomical.

They dont have a regulatory authority atthis stage, but they have a lot of enthusiasts

and the dogs I saw were all in excellent con-dition, the kennel complexes are larger thanwhats required in Australia and I believetheyre world leaders in transcervical insem-ination.

Ive never actually sold a dog to China butdogs Ive sold have filtered through to Chinaand I saw Turanza Bale while I was overthere. Hes eight or nine years old now buthe was in fantastic condition for his age. They did a semen collection while we werethere and hes still very fertile as well.

In my opinion for Greyhounds Australasia(GA) to label China as being non-compliantin regards to GAs export standards is anabsolute joke.

GA sent a delegation to look at Macau butto my knowledge they havent been to main-land China so they need to get off their back-sides and go over there and have a look forthemselves because in a lot of areas China isleaving us for dead.

THE red hot Dailly training operationenjoyed a day out at The Meadows lastWednesday afternoon, incredibly trainingthe first eight winners.

Team Daillys remarkable domination of themidweek meeting their biggest city haul -started when they prepared the trifecta inthe opening event, with first starter DiegoBale winning a maiden heat in 30.61.

Diego Bales littermates Ebert Bale andFolio Bale then won races two and three, alsoon debut, clocking 30.16 and 30.39 respec-tively.

The three maiden heat winners are by 2011English Derby victor Taylors Sky out ofZambola Bale, winner of the Group 2 YoungStar Classic at Wentworth Park in 2009 anddam of Ollie Bale, which the Daillys guided tovictory in the 2014 Group 1 Silver ChiefClassic.

The sensational Dailly winning streak con-tinued in races four through to eight with, inorder, Spring Gambo, Gazer Bale, ZabimaruBale, Hisagi Bale and Crackerjack Max victo-rious.

The Daillys didnt have a runner in theninth event, won byCraig TrehernesBookbinder, with theironly other starters onthe 12-race program,Kenju Bale and SpringPatsy, finishing secondand third in the tenthevent.

Weve never had aday like yesterdaybefore. Five winnerswas the most wed hadin the city previously,co-trainer George Daillysaid on Thursday.

    We did have a heap

of starters we had 27 dogs in but younever expect to get eight winners and defi-nitely not eight in a row.

It made the mainstream news in Victoria it was on Channel 9 and Channel 10 and Ihad a friend ring me from Perth saying it wason the news over there as well.

I was working at home and was too busyto watch the races but Kelly Bravo was send-ing me messages about what was happening. When it got to six out of six I thought werehaving a really good day but when it wasseven out of seven and then eight out ofeight I thought Kelly was pulling my leg!

We had a few young dogs that went quitewell. The three winners from the TaylorsSky/Zambola Bale litter showed a bit. Theybroke in good and theyve got plenty of zipabout them.

Taylors Sky is regarded in England andIreland as being the fastest son of WestmeadHawk and Zambola Bale has been a verygood bitch. Shes thrown something in everylitter dogs like Ollie Bale, Quartz Bale andPrue Bale so itll be interesting to see howthe Taylors Sky litter goes. - Gerard Guthrie

Bravo Hoping To Ride Bulli Rails

VICTORIAN trainer Kelly Bravo hopes vet-eran sprinter Ride The Rails can bury hisbox one bogey and secure a deserved fea-ture race victory in Friday nights Group 2Ladbrokes Cyril Rowe Gold Cup at Bulli.

Ride The Rails will spearhead Bravosthree-pronged assault on the $40,000 to-the-winner Gold Cup after a near-recordBulli debut in last Fridays heats.

Coming off a scorching 29.17 win atSandown, Ride The Rails, an October 11son of Cosmic Chief and Pearl Napoleon, was the $3.60 second elect behindMaitland Cup winner Spacecraft ($3.20)from a suitable box eight draw in the sec-ond of five heats.

Ride The Rails began moderately butcharged to the lead approaching the hometurn and dashed clear, trouncing runner-up Fancy Top by 7 3/4 lengths in 25.94,just .07 outside Exclusive Ones 472mtrack record.

Ride The Rails has been knocking on thedoor of a Group victory over the last sixmonths, running second in the Group 1Hobart Thousand, thirds in both theGroup 2 Warragul and Warrnambool Cupsand fourth in the Group 2 Launceston Cup,as well as appearing in the invitation onlyGroup 1 Rookie Rebel.

However, Kelly Bravo says the move frombox eight to the rails for Fridays final isa major concern, with Ride The Rails yetto win in eight appearances in the redvest.

He was perfectly boxed out there in hisheat and we thought hed run a nice race,Bravo said.

But the track was pretty heavy so wewerent expecting anything really quick, although he was only half a length offFernando Bales time at Sandown theweek before. He ran 29.17 and FernandoBale ran 29.14.

He hadnt been to Bulli before. We weregoing to come up for a race the weekbefore but that wouldve made it a three-week series and Brett (husband) spoke toAnthony Azzopardi about Bulli and he saidit was very similar to some of our countrytracks in Victoria so we decided not tocome up before the heats.

We got Ride The Rails to train last yearwhen Peter Brown passed away. He wascoming back from a bad hock injury and at

one stage it didnt look like he would getback to his best so hes done a great job todo what hes done.

It would be great to win a nice racewith him but hes not boxed that well.Hes never won from box one but he keepsdrawing inside in finals. He also had onein the Warrnambool Cup and he had twoin the Launceston Cup and Rookie Rebel.

He wont run off dramatically but hellwant to move up the track and he prefersto go around other dogs so well just haveto see what happens.

Ride The Rails produced the only sub-26heat performance and was easily thequickest of the five heat winners, withBravo also boasting the second fastestqualifier in promising youngster KaydaShae, a June 13 son of Bravos dual Group1 winner Kilty Lad and Cosmic Aphrodite.

Kayda Shae, which had finished fourth inthe Warrnambool Cup at his previousstart, improved his impressive record toseven from ten with a slick 26.23 first-upBulli success.

Bravo added a third string to her Cupbow with Waymores Blues also advancingcourtesy of his second to Luke AzzopardisWuxi in the opening heat.

Kayda Shae has drawn awkwardly in fivefor Fridays final, with Waymores Blues toexit box eight.

Kayda Shae is a bit the same as RideThe Rails because he keeps drawing mid-dle boxes, Bravo offered.

He also drew five in his heat and final ofthe Warrnambool Cup and before that hedrew four in a final at Sandown.

Hes only young but hes got a bigfuture ahead of him. His mid-race pace isamazing but he tends to miss it half alength and if they cross him he could be introuble.

Its hard to know what Ride The Railswill do off the red. Two-out Ride The Railswould probably still beat Kayda Shae butthe way the race is drawn I think KaydaShae might be our best chance if he gets abit of room out of the boxes.

Waymores Blues is well drawn out ineight but he isnt as brilliant as our othertwo so Im not sure whether he can getacross. But if theres any trouble hes defi-nitely good enough to pinch it.

There were two NSW heat winners inLuke Azzopardis Wuxi, which clocked26.33, and Jason Fletchers Fantastic Sid,which improved his perfect Bulli record tothree from three with a 26.50 success, while South Australian visitor AstonWingard, trained by Troy Murray, won theremaining heat in in 26.47.

Near record 25.94 heat winner Ride The Rails is one of Kelly Bravo's three finalistsin Friday night's Group 3 Cyril Rowe Gold Cup at Bulli (pics: Redden Video)

In precisely 12 months time one set of con-nections will be $100,000 richer, we justdont know who yet!

See, the countdown is on to the 2016Globe Memorial Richmond Riches PuppyAuction Classic, which also flies the flag asthe richest provincial greyhound race inAustralia.

325 lots went under the hammer atRichmonds inaugural Auction on November

30 last year, which means the chances of tak-ing home next years whopping first prizecurrently stands at 1/325. Not bad odds forthose involved, indeed.

Price Is Right In Wagga Cup Decider

Local star Cosmic Prince was the pride ofWagga when he stormed home to win lastFridays Graeme Hull Memorial WaggaGold Cup Final (525m).

Home town punters rallied behindCosmic Prince despite his adverse drawand he was the $3.50 favourite to stave offthe visitors in the Cup final.

Victorian bitch Lioness Lulu was secondfavourite at $4.10 after posting the fastestheat time a week earlier.

She was first out of the boxes but gotsqueezed out shortly after and finishedlast.

Tiggerlong Katut from box eight wasquickly into stride and crossed to lead outof the straight with Cosmic Prince in sec-ond place three lengths behind the leader.

Coming off the back Tiggerlong Katutstill led Cosmic Prince by three lengths.Once the home straight was reachedCosmic Prince hit top gear and he over-hauled Tiggerlong Katut to win by alength.

Cowra trained Second Line ($5.00) wasthird in 30.38.

Progeny of Tiggerlong Petal landed thequinella with Cosmic Prince (by CosmicChief) a December 2011 whelping, and hishalf-brother Tiggerlong Katut (by Fabregas)twelve months younger.

Tiggerlong Spot, a litter sister toTiggerlong Katut, finished sixth in the CupFinal.

Cosmic Prince is raced and trained byCraig Price and his record stands at 19wins and 16 placings from 41 starts.

The Wagga Gold Cups $10,000 first prizetakes Cosmic Princes prizemoney to$32,925.

Twelve of his wins have been at Waggaand his winning time on Friday was hisfastest over the 525 metre trip.

51 year old Price races and trains CosmicPrince and he was so proud to win hishome town Cup.

Yes I was rapt, I have only been inthe greyhound game for three yearsand this dog finish third in last yearsWagga Cup Final behind White Spyro, beamed Price.

To win the Wagga Cup is special. Ihave worked on the Riverina WaterCounty Council for thirty years and Iam still there.

About nine years ago my wife Nonacontracted cancer and after sufferingfor four years she passed away fiveyears ago.

I have never been involved in grey-hound racing until I bought CosmicPrince.

In mid-2011 Michael Finn who bredthe litter had a flood go through hisplace at North Wagga.

I did a lot of wiring and other workat his place and when the CosmicChief x Tiggerlong Petal litter weretwo weeks old around Christmas 2011I agreed to buy a pup for $3,000.

My daughter Hayley picked outCosmic Prince. Her partner at the timeScott Parry introduced me to grey-hound racing.

Michael Finn had the litter of ninebroken in and all nine came home withbig raps on them. He paid for CosmicPrinces break in because of the work Idid for him after the flood.

I only have two dogs in work.Cosmic Prince loves the Wagga trackand that is where he had his early edu-cation after break in. I believe he willrun a strong 600 metres.

I knew Cosmic Prince would be muchfitter on final night because he hadntraced for two months before the heats.

He weighed 33 kilograms on heat nightand that was the heaviest he had raced. Hewas down to 32.4 in the Final.

  • Despite drawing box five, boom youngsterPop The Cork will be a raging hotfavourite for tonights Mick ByrneMemorial fifth grade final at Albion Park.

The 22 month old son of Brett Lee andIma Geisha Girl scorched around the 520metres course in a heat last week from boxfour in 29.62. Its almost bizarre that train-er Peter Ruetschi said he was slightly disap-pointed with that time.

When he got on the bunny so early inthe race, I thought here we go for a trackrecord run, he said.

The record is 29.57, held jointly by LateAngel Lee and Made To Size. Pop The Corknudged that figure with a 29.58 win fourstarts back in an Albion Park novice.

Without sounding smart, I think the dogwill break the record. The times run in theother races last week suggests the trackmay have been a little off, Ruetschi sur-mised.

Tonights fifth grade final is worth$10,220 to-the-winner. Its named in mem-ory of long serving Gabba and Albion Parkcommitteeman Mick Byrne who died in

2006. The second fastest heat win wasTony Bretts recent Rockhampton Cup win-ner Whata Nice Size who ran 29.99.

Concerning Pop The Cork, Peter Ruetschiwas toying with the idea of heading toWentworth Park for the Peter MosmanClassic heats on Saturday week.

The Flying Amy Classic is on at AlbionPark at the same time. The Peter Mosmanis Group One but I think Ill bypass that infavour of the Flying Amy. Then hopefullyonto the Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup, alsoat Albion Park, he said.

The Flying Amy Classic is for greyhoundsup to thirty months of age with a first prizeof $25,000.

Pop The Cork has won six of his eightstarts. His winning margins range fromthree lengths to 18.5 lengths, with an aver-age of a staggering 9.2 lengths.

21 years ago there was a Pop The Corknamed for racing in New South Wales butavailable records indicate the dog didnthave a start. He was by Kedos Image out ofFox Make. The best greyhound in that litterseems to have been Black Fox Image whomade it to the final of the 1997 GoldenEaster Egg at Wentworth Park won byBahama Image. Black Fox Image ran eighth.

The 2016 Golden Easter Egg is a long wayoff but who knows, the current Pop TheCork might just get there.

Its the final of the annual Bundy Bullet,Australias shortest greyhound race runover 250 metres. Its a case of blink andmiss!

Four heats were run last Saturday. Thequickest time was run by the KevMcIntosh trained Billys Crusader in 14.75from box two. Magic Galo (box five) ran

Tonights $10,220 to the winner WinterChase final over 710 metres at AlbionPark could unearth a surprise result.

Some of the greyhounds which contest-ed last weeks heats will derive benefitfrom a start over that journey. Theresbeen a scarcity of middle and long dis-tance racing in Brisbane lately.

A bitch like Eleazer, who worked homequite strongly for fourth in her heat, could easily rise to the occasion tonight. But 41.91 heat winner Tuavasa Shek washaving his first start for over a month andis a potential improvertoo.

    Tragedy Cuts Promising Career Short

THE promising career of one of Victoriasmost exciting young commodities hascome to a shattering end after connec-tions made the agonizing decision to layboom sprinter Gracas King to rest earlierthis week.

The son of Lochinvar Marlow hadbecome a revelation since transferring totrainer Jason Thompson earlier this year, quickly affirming himself as one of thestates most promising chasers, followingsix earlier starts in NSW for his ownerDennis Anderson.

His best of night 25.54 victory atGeelong on Friday night took his racerecord to an enviable 13 wins and threeplacings from just 18 appearances and at26 months of age he seemingly had theworld at his feet.

Indicating the depth of his ability, GracasKing made the final of the Group 2Warrnambool Cup at just his 16th race-track appearance, with a host of stagger-ing best of night wins also perched besidehis name.

Following last Friday nights all-the-wayvictory, Gracas King injured himself in thecatching pen when pulling up onto thedrag lure, a fixture on all Victorian tracks.

To lose a dog like this is a real tragedy,

said a despondent Jason Thompson whencontacted by The Recorder on Tuesday.

Hed developed a habit of diving ontothe drag in the pen and when he did thaton Friday hes completely torn the musclethat extends from his shoulder to hiselbow off the bone.

The dog couldnt walk and the injurywas that bad we basically didnt have adecision to make. It was irreparable. Therewould have been no quality of life at all,Thompson added.

Thompson was quick to heap praise onGracas King, comparing him to one of thebest one-turn sprinters hes put a lead on.

To me he was like a direct replica ofRonan Izmir and he was a multiple Grouprace winner that won over $300,000 inprizemoney thats what I thought ofhim, Thompson said.

He was a real pleasure to train and hejust kept improving. He was only 26months of age and well never know justhow good he could have been.

Following this incident Thompson hascalled on Greyhound Racing Victoria toreview the merits of the drag lure used inVictorian catching pens.

Ive been saying for some time now thatI dont know why we use it. Im yet to seeany benefit, Thompson said.

Regardless of what happened on Fridaynight I just dont see the need for it. Iunderstand there is no perfect system andthere never will be but Ive seen enough ofthis now to see that it needs to revisited.

Exciting young sprinting prospect Gracas King was laid to rest after injurying him-self in the catching pen following his best of night win at Geelong on Friday

.08Greyhound Racing NSW has finalised theallocation of TAB race dates for the 2015/16racing season.

The allocation will result in changes to theschedule for metropolitan racing as well forthe Hunter and the Northern Rivers.

The major changes include: Metropolitan A2 meetings at Wentworth

Park to move from Friday night toWednesday night. TAB race meetings at Bulli to move from

Wednesday night to Friday night. Removing TAB C race meetings at

Wentworth Park on a Monday night andredistributing the races across the A1 andA2 meetings at the venue by running 11race cards each week.

Grafton to replace Wentworth Park Cmeetings in the Monday night timeslot.

Removing TAB C race meetings at Maitlandcurrently in a Wednesday twilight timesloton Sky 2 and spreading these races acrossthe remaining Hunter (Gosford, Maitlandand The Gardens) meetings by running 11race cards each week.Although the new calendar sees a reduc-

tion in the total number of race meetings, this will be mitigated by holding 11 racecards, when nominations allow, atWentworth Park, Gosford, Maitland and TheGardens.

This will result in the total level of racing

remaining steady in these regions. The move of Wentworth Park A2 meetings

to Wednesday night aims to alleviate someof the current nomination flow issues andperceived racing issues at the venue.

The change also provides consistency inracing at the venue and provides a larger gapbetween the A2 and A1 meetings. This willhopefully assist the club with its marketingof the venue and provides trainers with theability to nominate greyhounds across bothmeetings in a given week.

The decision to move Bulli to the vacatedFriday night timeslot was motivated by adesire to minimise change across the racingcalendar and to provide an adequate gapbetween racing at Goulburn and Bulli on aweek-to-week basis.

A feature that is returning for the 2015/16racing calendar is the scheduling of some ofthe biggest provincial races in NSW to bestaged on a Friday night.

One of the drivers behind this years racingcalendar was to endeavour to provide clubswith as much consistency of racing as possi-ble.

The new dates, which are still awaitingapproval from Racingcorp and are subject tochange, will come into effect on 1 July 2015.

Non-TAB dates for 2015/16 will be avail-able shortly.

WINSOME Senor, sidelined for over fivemonths due a cracked hock, completed aremarkable comeback with a barnstorm-ing win at Wentworth Park last Fridaynight.

The John Finn-owned, Minnie Finn-trained son of El Grand Senor andWinsome Shiraz came from fifth on theback straight to hit the front coming tothe home bend for a six lengths victory.

Winsome Senor, an older half-brother toWinsome Prince, a winner of 15 from 28starts for team Finn, is a true homegrown product.

His dam Winsome Shiraz won 15 racesand reached top grade at WP while herdam was Winsome Silver, another Finngreyhound product.

We sent Winsome Senor over to PaulStuart to be trained in Western Australiabecause we thought tracks like

Cannington would suit his style of rac-ing, John Finn said on Saturday.

Winsome Senor won eight races atCannington and Mandurah but inSeptember he cracked a hock.

So we brought him home but it tookover five months to get him right.

Even now he is a week to week propo-sition because apart from the hock he hasa dodgy stopper bone.

Winsome Senors mother WinsomeShiraz has been a good brood bitch butunfortunately whelps small litters.

There was just one pup in her first lit-ter and we have two by Magic Spritewhich are on their way to the track whileshe has three Cosmic Rumble youngstersat home.

    Lexia Eyes Fun Feature Double

LEXIA Isaac has her sights set on a fairytaleGroup 2 family feature double in Saturdaynights Greyhounds WA Western AustralianOaks.

Last Saturday at Cannington Isaac andpartner Mick Pollard celebrated their great-est win when homebred youngster Fun Bosswas an upset all-the-way winner of theGroup 2 Brittons Formal Wear WA Derby.

Fun Boss litter sister Jamaica The Funthen capped an unforgettable night forIsaac when claiming a heat of the WA Oaksand shell be striving to emulate her broth-ers Group-winning heroics in this week-ends final.

A July 13 son of Kinloch Brae and AlottaFun, Fun Boss was one of the outsiders inthe $40,000 to-the-winner Derby, but beliedhis $30.60 starting price when holding onto beat Victorian star Dyna Double One.

It was very exciting, especially when youbreed them yourselves, Lexia Isaac said.

We bred Fun Boss mother and his grand-mother (Totally Elusive) too. We also had hisgreat grandmother Elusive Fire, which webought from Queensland. Its been a verygood line and every generation has had oneor two good dogs in it.

Andrea Daillys Dyna Double One started$1.80 favourite from box five in the Derbyafter a flying 30.10 heat victory, with PaulStuarts rails runner Tureaud ($2.70) viewedas the main danger.

However, Fun Boss, which qualified forthe final when running second in his heat, beaten three-quarters of a length in 30.73by another local in Nero Bolt, came out run-ning from box four and crossed Tureaud inthe run to the first turn.

Fun Boss skipped clear down the pack andwhile Dyna Double One and Nero Boltloomed threateningly turning for home heheld on in a thrilling three-way finish, defeating Dyna Double One by a head in aslick new Cannington personal best of30.24, with Nero Bolt a neck away in third.

Fun Boss has won nine of his 17 starts, missing a place only once, while hes wonseven from 12 at Cannington, where hes

yet to finish out of the top three. We were hoping he could win, of course,

but to be honest we were hoping he couldfinish in the first three with some luck,Isaac said.

Hes been a good little dog right from theword go and I was amazed he paid as muchas he did.

I thought $30 was ridiculous because hisform has been very good. He won thePuppy Classic at Cannington, hes a goodbeginner and he only ever gets run downnear the finish. I did have a token betbecause he was such big odds!

We were a bit worried that the red(Tureaud) might beat him out but hejumped straight to the front and it waslooking really good down the back. I wasworried that he might get run down by thefive (Dyna Double One) and it got very closeon the line but he just held on.

He ran his best time ever at Canningtonand when youre out in front theyve got tocatch you and they werent able to.

Weve won some good races and had acouple of dogs in the Perth Cup but this isthe first Group 2 race weve won.

Well give Fun Boss a little break now andthe next race for him will be the Westchase,a WA bred series. Well just take it as we gobut he doesnt turn two until July and hesgetting stronger with every race so hopeful-ly he stays injury free. But hes done verywell to do what hes done so far.

Fun Boss sister Jamaica The Fun then pro-vided some cream for Isaacs Derby cakewhen leading throughout in the second offour WA Oaks heats, taking advantage ofbox one to defeat Ronray Dreamer by three-quarters of a length in 30.66, her third winfrom 13 starts.

Jamaica The Fun hasnt had as manystarts as Fun Boss because she had a coupleof little injuries that put her back a bit butshes good now, Isaac explained.

Shes a good beginner too and we gaveher a really good chance in her Oaks heat. She went well and I think shell like it out inbox seven in the final. I dont think the Oaksis quite as strong as the Derby was and Illbe disappointed if she doesnt run well.

Fun Boss has only ever been a couple oflengths quicker than Jamaica The Fun sohopefully shell be as good as him. Fingerscrossed she can do the same thing onSaturday night as Fun Boss did last week!

    Lord Eyes More Legends Loot

Gunning trainer Jodie Lord has won theonly two Canberra Racing Clubs TheLegends and the Wentworth Park lead-ing trainer will have two finalists, includ-ing the fastest heat winner, in Sundays$10,000 to-the-winner final.

The race was first run in 2013 when theClub recognized Jim Patton and LordsCawbourne Ottey was successful.

In 2014, legendary race caller PaulAmbrosoli was the legend recognized andPaddles Anderson came from last early tosnatch victory on the post.

Paddles Anderson will again representthe Lord kennel in this years final alongwith College Boyz.

The heats were held on Sunday and theenigmatic Paddles Anderson was clearlythe fastest of the three heat winners.

The powerful sprinter was the $2.10favourite from the rails box in the thirdand final heat.

He was slowly away but he railed intofourth place at the first turn and downthe back he was third six lengths behindthe leader Miracle Whip.

Nearing the home turn Miracle Whipwas still five lengths clear of Paddles butthe favourite then started to unwind.

Paddles Anderson nailed Miracle Whipto win by a nose with third placegetterTriella Bale seven and three quarterlengths away third.

The time was 30.68.Yass sprinter Rampion completed a hat-

trick of wins when he led all-the-way towin the first heat by four lengths in 30.89.

Mimpi and College Boyz filled the plac-ings.

San Joy, courtesy of a dream runthrough on the rail when the leaders ranoff the track in the straight, won heat twoin 30.97.

Celestial Prince and Lords Pearl Blondewere placed.

The two fastest thirds Pearl Blonde andTriella Bale qualified for the LegendsFinal.

However Pearl Blonde pulled up with aninjured wrist and was issued with an inca-pacitation certificate after racing errati-cally in the home straight.

She wont run in the final and her ken-nelmate College Boyz, the slowest of thethird placings, gains a start.

One out, Paddles Anderson is muchmore talented than any of the other final-ists but his strike-rate is not good and hehas met the wrath of stewards a couple oftimes.

However he has a good record atCanberra where he has won four races.

I caught up with Jodie Lords husbandAndy earlier this week.

Paddles Anderson has never shown histrue ability in most races but he did win a720 at Wentworth Park by 14 lengths in42.26 in September, Lord informed.

We have been mixing his distancesbecause his mind wanders and we are try-ing to keep his mind on racing. This dograces very well at Canberra and he will behard to beat from any box.

Paddles Anderson has won a race by abig space at Canberra in 30.37. He will beslow out and will need luck.

He pulled up well and we will probablygive him a 500 metre trial on our straightthrough the week.

Our other finalist College Boyz is animprover and there is not a great deal ofpace in the final and if he finds the leadhe wont be easy to run down.

Neil Staines sprinter Rampion is theone for our dogs to beat.

The dog is in good form and he hasgood speed. Probably better suited withan outside box, Lord added.

This year the Canberra Racing Club isrecognising local legend, the late GregMillwood.

The box draw for the Legends Finalwas not available when this newspaperwent to print.

Paddles Anderson (box 1) will be chasing back-to-back wins in the CanberraLegends Series in Sunday nights $10,000 to-the-winner Final

DEAR Darcey, still only 21 months old, overcame a slow start to take hisWentworth Park record to three winsfrom four appearances in a slick 30.02last Saturday night.

Despite the tardy getaway Dear Darceybullocked his way along the rails to leadat the catching pen, then gradually draw-ing clear to win by over four lengths.

Dear Darcey is owned and trained atLondonderry by former taxi driver JohnAyoub, who says he got his kick alongin 2005 when he bought a performedgreyhound from John Finn.

Winsome Best had won two races atBulli for John before he sold him to mefor $5000, Ayoub said on Saturdaynight.

Thanks to Johns on-going advice, along with help Ive always got from myneighbouring trainer Frank Hurst,Winsome Best won twice for me over520m at Wentworth Park as well as win-ning two 600m races at Gosford.

Dear Darcey was the youngest starterin Easters Magic Maiden series and is

still only a baby.Thats why Im undecided whether to

throw him into a race like the PeterMosman Classic heats on June 6.

I have to look after him and bring himalong slowly.

I couldnt believe how badly hejumped tonight but he is a funny dog.

When I give him some box practiceleading up to a race he usually beginssmartly but if I miss giving him a jumpout or two leading up to a race he seemsto forget how to ping and misses thekick.

Although Dear Darcey is very smart atthis stage I wouldnt rate him the fastestgreyhound Ive trained.

That honour goes to Little Georgiawho won in 29.85 at Wenty and won in22.50 and 18.50 over the Richmond400m and 330m journeys.

And I think Little Georgia is going tobe a good producer because there aregood reports about her first litter, siredby Collision, which have just been edu-cated.

Dear Darcey, pictured here winning at Wentworth Park over the Easter Carnival, delivered another dashing win on Saturday night

LORNA Belle, who races like a replica ofher mother Lorna Moira, gave trainer RonBell his 50th winner for 2015 when sheled throughout at Wentworth Park lastSaturday night.

Having only her second WP outing,Lorna Belle jumped in front and showedplenty of grit to hang on and win by a neckfrom Wenty winners Little Jill and Once ADrifter.

Earlier last Saturday Bell had landed adouble at The Gardens, scoring with Tuaover 400m and with Domino Petacchi, who defeated kennelmate Exotic Pearlover 515m, in a nippy 29.99.

When Lorna Belle was being broken inshe was exactly like her dam Lorna Moirawho was a fast beginner but would alsocrash to the left at the start, Bellexplained.

Lorna Belle was never as quick as Lorna

Moira and still isnt, but she is improvingall the time.

I was happy with Lorna Belles first upfourth at Wentworth Park on May 15because she had not trialled at the trackso it was pleasing to see her run a firstsplit of 5.37sec and win in 29.94 tonight.

Lorna Moira was a wonderful race bitchwho won eight races at Wentworth Parkand reached the finals of the 2008 GoldenEaster Egg, Paws Of Thunder, NationalFuturity and Ladies Bracelet.

Lorna Belle is from her third litter whileLorna Moiras second litter included JoeHanley, who won 28 races, and JacksonRule, who was very smart and won eightraces before his career finished prema-turely due to a broken hock.

My mothers name was Lorna MoiraBell so I named Lorna Moira after her andkept the process going with Lorna Belle.

Chappo Happy With The PantherTHE phrase happy chappy could wellapply to the ever-smiling trainer JohnChapman but Chappo was wearing abigger grin than ever after LithgowPanthers impressive 42.21 win at his sec-ond Wentworth Park 720m test onMonday night.

Despite being sixth of seven to leave theboxes, Lithgow Panther railed underneathmost of his rivals to be second when enter-ing the straight for the first time.

Assisted by the wide running antics ofpacemaker Zipping Spike, Lithgow Panthertook the lead with a lap to go and won byfive lengths from the early leader.

After the race a somewhat relievedChapman declared Lithgow Panther thebest greyhound he has prepared.

Until now that honour has gone to BlitizTo Excel who had an enormous motor andwon 22 races but the Panther is probablytops now, Chapman said on Monday.

Ill now get the dog ready for the 731mGosford heat of the GBOTA StayersChallenge on June 2.

Ive always thought Lithgow Panther, who has now won 12 from 28 starts, wouldstay, but I wanted to take my time withhim.

I had him set up for his first 720m raceat Wentworth Park on April 2 but he devel-oped an ear infection and had to bescratched.

That set him back for three weeks but Iwasnt too concerned because over theyears I have seen too many young dogsruined as stayers after being rushed alongtoo much.

I have to thank Lithgow Panthers own-ers, Joe Inzitari, who has his own electricalbusiness, and Michael Inzitari, who runs aconcreting operation, for letting me dothings my way.

They were probably being quizzed as towhen Lithgow Panther was going over thelong distances in town but they have beenvery patient.

The dog didnt get to the line toostrongly when he beat More In Store over618m at Richmond on May 9 but I thinkthat was because he was backing up aftera hard run over 600m at Gosford fournights earlier.

The Inzitaris have been wonderful own-ers for me and they were in the syndicateswhich owned Zipping Logan, Arena Flyerand Zipping Onyx.

They won 48 races between them and

its great to continue on with owners whoare locals, not far from where my kennelsare at Lidsdale.

Before his first 720m race at Wenty onMay 18 when he finished fourth after find-ing all sorts of trouble from box eight,

Lithgow Panther had not been trialled overthe long trip.

All he had at Wentworth Park were acouple of post to post hand slips and a trialfrom the Wentworth Park 520m boxes.

KOWEM Girl, who won just one race inslow time at Bulli and who was unplacedin her first two starts at Potts Park, hasproduced Entreaty, who scored her thirdwin in seven Wentworth Park appear-ances on Saturday night.

Entreaty trailed tearaway leaderFascinate Marina to the home turn and, despite colliding heavily with the tiringpacemaker halfway down the straight, fin-ished determinedly to win in 30.26.

After the race Entreatys trainer HarrySarkis declared he would nominate thegreyhound, along with her highly talentedkennelmate To A Too, for Saturday weeksPeter Mosman heats.

I know it is a big stepup in class for Entreatybut she can begin andlead and is also strong atthe finish, Sarkis said.

And she has run 29.94at Wentworth Park so Illgive her a chance in thebig race along with mybest greyhound, To ATee.

Sarkis explained thatEntreatys dam KowemGirl had a mediocrerecord on the track buthad been an outstandingproducer.

Kowem Girl wastrained by my mate JohnZigric and she ran nearrecord time in a trial over

535m at Richmond before she raced. But then she cracked a wrist and when

she came back to the track she was neverthe same greyhound.

She only had four starts, winning hermaiden over 472m at Bulli in slow time.

But she has produced city winners fromeach of her four litters and Kowem Girl isthe mother of Melkate, the dam of To ATee.

To A Tee has won four races at WP wherehe has clocked 29.79 so his close relationEntreatys value as a brood bitch of thefuture is enormous.

Medal Winners Hitting The JackpotThe NSW GBOTAs Ladbrokes Monthly Medal initiative is proving to be extremely popularwith trainers across the state, with over $30,000 in additional prizemoney paid out in thefirst three months of its inception.

At a time where provision of prizemoney and returns to owners and trainers is at a premi-um, Ladbrokes continued contribution and support should not be understated.

    Rodericks Gosford Punt Pays Off

Outsider Toe Punt ($27.20), with a burst ofspeed from the boxes, left his more fan-cied rivals in his wake to take out Tuesdaynights Ladbrokes Gosford Goldmine Final(515m).

Toe Punt led and was run down by DevineAwe in a heat the previous week and hewas friendless in betting on Tuesday nightafter coming up with the five box.

The speedy Jingjing ($2.90) and fastestheat winner Camden Valleyway ($3.10) hada battle for favouritism but neither was awinning chance from the outset.

Jingjing, normally a reliable beginner, wasone of the last to leave the boxes and wasoff the pace at the first turn.

Camden Valleyway was slowly away andnever got into the race.

In the end Toe Punt, which led by fourlengths in the middle stages, won by twolengths from Two Parts Freak ($6.90) withTiggerlong Killa ($4.70) third.

The time of 30 seconds was identical tothat recorded by Toe Punt in his heat.

Toe Punt is raced and trained by Paul

Roderick and he has won five of 14 starts. On May 11 he won a Monday night

Wentworth Park race in 30.52.The son of El Galo kicked off his career by

winning a heat of the Wauchope ButchMonkley Memorial in the fastest time of21.92 on Boxing Day, 2014.

He has won two short course races inmoderate time at Gosford and Maitland.

Roderick is a truck driver and he was atwork on Wednesday morning.

I am still on cloud nine, Roderickbeamed.

I was confident that Toe Punt could winand although the first prize was $10,000 Ibacked him as well. In fact I also had hissister Mana in the final and I was hopingfor the quinella but she finished well back.

My uncle John Roderick owned ToePunts mother Lee Kate and he gave me thebitch to breed from. Splash About was asmart one from her first litter and Toe Puntand Mana are from her second litter. I onlyhave the two in work.

Brad and Charmaine Field reared thepair and my wife Rebecca broke them in.

Toe Punt has speed but he kept findingtrouble in the short course races so I decid-ed to step him up to the 500s.

I took him to Wentworth Park and he tri-alled 30.30 first look. I havent got him

nominated anywhere at this stage.I have been training for ten years and

the Goldmine was my best win yet Imthrilled.

I would like to thank my mother Liz for

her help with the dogs. When we go onholidays she comes to our place and looksafter the dogs while we are away, anexcited Roderick added on Wednesdaymorning.

    Aussies Awkward Ashton Alley

RETIRED schoolteacher Bill Wudarczykhas his fingers crossed ahead ofThursday nights Group 3 Howard AshtonFinal at Angle Park after his fastest quali-fier Aussie Noorumba drew awkwardly inbox four.

Aussie Noorumba took advantage of boxone when winning his semi-final of the$25,000 to-the-winner Howard Ashton, anage-restricted series for South Australian-bred sprinters, leading all-the-way in asmart 29.84.

It was the April 13 son of Cosmic Rumbleand Nirimba Sapphires fifth win from 13starts, although he was assisted by the latescratching of quickest heat winner CheckYo Self, which saw Aussie Noorumba start$2.50 favourite.

That was the first time hes had box oneand he used it, owner/trainer BillWudarczyk said.

When he first started racing he used tospear off on the first turn but hes had 13starts now and I think hes learning. Hednever had box one before so I couldnt beconfident but I was hopeful because hescoming out a lot better and runningstraight out of the boxes.

There wasnt any pace on his outside, which helped. Hes not a fast box dog but

hes become a safe box dog and once heled I thought he would hang on.

The other thing that helped was thescratching of Check Yo Self, which wasprobably the favourite for the series.During the preview it did a 360 degreespin and slipped the lead. It ran to theboxes and did a lap. I felt very sorry forWayne (Ryan).

Unfortunately box four isnt going tohelp Aussie Noorumba in the final. Ivebeen waiting to draw an outside box forhis last eight starts but we havent beenable to snag one. He keeps drawing themiddle so were going to need a lot of luck.Ive got my fingers crossed!

Wudarczyk also had the favourite in thesecond Howard Ashton semi-final in AussieNoorumbas litter sister Lady Xanthe, butshes the second reserve after finishingfifth to 29.97 winner Mojito Mayhem, trained in Victoria by Peter Franklin.

Lady Xanthe was a false favourite,Wudarczyk said.

Shes a different type to AussieNoorumba. Shes a speed bitch and sheneeded to lead to win. But she was nevergoing to lead Long Gully Stevi, which wasdrawn underneath her, and she weakenedover the last 50 metres.

I always had this series in mind forAussie Noorumba but not for Lady Xanthebecause up until just over a month agoshed only won over 388 metres and it did-nt look like there was any way in the worldshed run the 515. Shed stop as if shot.

But she was paid up for the series so I

decided to work her really hard free gal-loping and give her a couple of 500s andshe surprised me with two sub-30 wins.

Wudarczyk is well-acquainted withAussie Noorumba and Lady Xanthes fami-ly, having trained both their motherNirimba Sapphire and grand-dam NirimbaCool, and he races the promising duo in asyndicate that includes Gavin Harris, whoowns Group 1-winning stayer Luna Jinx.

Peter Luxton, a friend of mine, bred thelitter and he owned and trained the damNirimba Sapphire, Wudarczyk explained.

I trained Nirimba Sapphire for a whilewhen Peter was on holidays and won the

Gawler Breeders with her and I also trainedher mother Nirimba Cool, so Ive beeninvolved with the family for a long time.

The boys and I bought three pups out ofthe Cosmic Rumble litter. The other onehasnt raced yet.

Hes been a bit of a problem dogbecause hes been crook and the next twomonths will tell the story.

I started training back in 1973 but I wasa full-time teacher and a hobby trainer andI was hopeless!

I didnt know anything about it but sinceretiring in 2000 I think Ive been doing itproperly!

Aussie Noorumba, trained by Bill Wudarczyk, is the fastest qualifier for Thursdaynight's Group 3 Howard Ashton after a 29.84 semi-final victory (pic: Arclight)
