BOWIE FOOD PANTRY: The Collington Community Outreach, Bowie Food Pantry project is so pleased, once again, to thank the many residents who continue to give so generously food and personal items for our neighbors in need. Nutritional foods are always needed by our less fortunate neighbors. Food such as canned meats and tuna fish, canned and dry beans, applesauce and pudding in small containers as well as healthy snacks (power powers, for instance). We are receiving many personal care items so beneficial for people without homes or without the financial resources to purchase expensive needed products such as toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, soap. We are grateful to you all for recognizing that these needs continue. For your information, Nadine Hathaway and Gretta Estey make two trips each month to deliver the contributions. You may wish to make your donations accordingly, either mid or end of the month. COLLINGTON VILLAGE’S POOL: The outdoor pool at Collington Village will open for the summer this Memorial Day weekend. It will be open Wednesdays to Sundays from noon to 7 p.m. No passes are required and Collington residents are welcome to use the pool. There are toilets, showers, and change rooms at the pool, which is located midway to the North Campus Drive gate on the road through Collington Village. At the time of Collington Village’s development, an agreement was reached enabling Village residents to use Collington facilities in return for Collington residents using the Village pool. IN MEMORY OF URSULA DUNN: Ursula Dunn’s family will be hosting a get together in the Ivy Lounge on June 6 from 4-6 PM. OO GLASS CASES NEED JEWELRY: DONATIONS: Our “Jewel Box” sales of jewelry in the 2nd floor glass cases (by the billiards room) and the 3rd floor glass cases (across from the Landing) substantially add to the monthly earnings of the OO Shop. The money earned is

Page 9: May 27 – June 2 Key Contact Numbers MANAGER ON DUTY · 2019. 5. 24. · Courier 5 May 27 – June 2, 2019 delicious delectables, dancing and jollification on Saturday, May 25 from

donated through the OO Shop to the Collington Residents Association for the important work of its committees. All jewelry is greatly appreciated – necklaces, bracelets, pins, and earrings are needed. Broken necklaces are also requested and are given to Jackie Reed for use by the resident beaders who create new jewelry. Please leave your donated jewelry in a bag/box, marked for the glass cases, at the Clock Tower reception desk. THE MYSTERY BOOK DISCUSSION CLUB found much to like-and much to criticize- in novels by Clive Cussler. Their discussion at the May 22nd meeting was lively. We will be reading novels by Elizabeth Peters for our June 26th meeting, Ms. Peters’ heroine, Amelia Peabody, is an archeologist in Egypt in 1919. TO ALL DOG OWNERS: I received a phone call that someone had left a huge amount of poop at the dog park, the trails and down by the gazebo. Really, if this was your lawn and you had nice trails to walk would you not pick up after your dog? It’s disgusting for one of our neighbors to take a nice walk and step into a pile of dog poop. It would ruin your day. We are told again and again that Collington wants us to think that we are home when we reside at Collington. Please respect other people's comfort and joy when they get out in nature and want to be happy. If you are handicapped and cannot pick up after your dog consider getting a dog walker. To all my neighbors and friends, have a good day out there walking on Collington grounds (which are beautiful, by the way) and not have to wash off your shoes when you get back home because of someone who does not want to follow the rules. Peg McQuarrie, x7593 THE REGATTA IS POSTPONED: The Regatta, originally scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, has been postponed until Labor Day weekend. This doesn't mean you won't see skipjacks on the water! Boats will be available for fun and practice sailing throughout the summer. Come to the lake and try your hand or just enjoy the scene. More news closer to the event.

It’s also recommended to use an SPF 15+ or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen and SPF 30+ water-resistant sunscreen for extended or intense outdoor exposures and to reapply at least every two hours or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

•I would like to personally extend an apology for the pool closures this week as I know this has been a frustration to many residents. We have been closely monitoring the chlorine levels and when the levels are not up to code, we must unfortunately close the pool due to safety. We have been working in partnership with our facilities team and would like to thank Chris Jones and Jerome Perry for their stepping in to assist so that we could quickly get the pool re-opened. We are continuing to work with our contracted pool company and internally with our facilities team to try some new approaches in order to better monitor and maintain adequate chlorine levels in hopes this will prevent future pool closures. •This Memorial Day, I would like to say thank you to our heroes as we remember and honor all who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Wishing all residents and staff a peaceful Memorial Day.

provided me during my time here.

I will miss my colleagues and the residents and all the laughs we shared.

Remember what I put on the Creighton Center activity calendars; “It’s always a

Although older drivers are the demographic group with the highest rate of seatbelt use — and the lowest percentage of alcohol-related accidents — they are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash occurs. Why? Older drivers are more physically fragile than their younger counterparts, and they're generally less able to withstand the impact of a vehicular accident. Fortunately, there are ways for drivers to adapt to their cars — and adjust their "fit" within them — in order to reduce their risk of injury during a crash.

CarFit, a free educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, helps address these safety concerns.

Car-Fit – Wed., June 19, 2019, starting at 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM in the employee parking lot

Learn how to refresh your driving skills, save money, volunteer and find useful information and guidance about getting around at aarp.org/driversafety.

Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you

travel every day.

Some drivers age 50‐plus have never looked back since they got their first driver's

license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from refreshing their

driving skills.

By taking a driver refresher course you'll learn the current rules of the road,

defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in

today's increasingly challenging driving environment. You'll learn how you can

manage and accommodate common age‐related changes in vision, hearing and

reaction time.
