YATRI SEWA INITIATIVE Serving migrant workers in Mumbai
Akshaya Patra, along with volunteers from partner NGOs - YOLO and Don Bosco Alumni, continues its Yatri Sewa Relief programme in Mumbai at CSMT (Chatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and LTT Station (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus).
Operations started on April 12, 2021. Through Phase 1, Akshaya Patra distributed 70,000 bottles of water and
20,000 packets of biscuits.
With the launch of Phase 2, Crompton CSR Foundation joined the effort to serve migrant workers by generously sponsoring 50,000 dry food kits. Over the past few days more than 8,000 kits have been distributed to travelers.
Coca Cola India has enhanced each kit with a contribution of 15,000 liquid ORS tetra packs.
A 100-strong group of Akshaya Patra's employees and partner NGO volunteers have been driving the
distribution campaign.

Even the middle class has shrunk by a third, says Pew Center’s estimate. Overall, cutting across population and geographical segments, millions of Indians have either become poorer, or poor, or on the brink of becoming poor.

A LOSS OF LIVELIHOOD AND HUNGER The ongoing plight of Migrant Workers
At the age of 23, Bhanu Singh left his village in Uttar Pradesh. That was 2018. On April 25, 2021, Bhanu is a 26-year-old distraught man, who looks older than his age and often breaks into tears while talking about his experience in the last two years.
When asked how does manages, he says, "I am not able to sleep because of hunger. I can manage skipping one or two meals, but I have to provide food to my mother. If I go back home, I won’t return again."

The Pew Research Center, using World Bank data, has estimated that the number of poor in India (with income of $2 per day or less in purchasing power parity) has more than doubled from 60 million to 134 million in just a year due to the pandemic-induced recession. This means, India can once again be called a 'country of mass poverty' after 45 years.
The pandemic struck India when it recorded its lowest economic growth in over a decade. Cut to 2021: Rural Indians - mostly an informal workforce and poor by any accepted definition - have lived with irregular jobs for over a year. People are cutting back on food items and many have difficulty buying the basics like lentils as food inflation has spiked.

NetApp Supports Akshaya Patra’s Covid-19 Food Relief Effort
NetApp, a global cloud-led, data-centric software company, has partnered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation for distribution of 10,000 Happiness Kits to underprivileged government school children and their families in Bangalore. NetApp also contributed generously toward the distribution of 14,738 food kits to passengers travelling on Shramik trains from Bangalore to Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand.
Speaking about the feeding initiative, Ravi Chhabria, MD, NetApp India, said, “Akshaya Patra is doing stellar work in the area of child hunger and malnutrition. It is well known that mid-day meals have resulted in better school attendance and lower dropout rates. Education and hunger relief are both big areas of giving for NetApp because they are the first step towards enabling an inclusive community. During the last seven years, we have had multiple associations with The Akshaya Patra Foundation, whether it be a charity cooking competition, or donating food delivery vehicles, cooking appliances or – most importantly for us – volunteering our time. We really look forward to associating with them in future as well, continuing on the journey to better education and health for young children.”
