Washington Irving, the 19th-century American author known for stories such as Rip Van Winkle and The

Legend of Sleepy Hollow once wrote:

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

It’s a fitting echo as we welcome a month that—since recognized as a national holiday by Woodrow Wilson in 1914—celebrates mothers across the country and the maternal backbone of society on its second Sunday.

Here at Lifestyle Publications, we’re in the business of inspiring people—and this May, not only are we inspired by mothers, but by all the strong, influential women who call Billings home.

People so important deserve to be recognized, and that’s why we’ve dedicated this issue of Billings Lifestyle to all the moms, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, cousins and nieces who dissipate our clouds of darkness—and to some activities that can help them relax after they’re done being Superwoman.

We’ll show you a day in the life of a few impressive female entrepreneurs who have found time for success in the midst of an ever-busy schedule and a peek at what’s inside one of the most important accessories for a local mom: her purse.

After that, take some time to decompress. Plan a girls weekend with your favorite female counterparts and travel in style with our trend setter article that gives you advice about what to pack for a variety of trips. And, in the meantime, stay up to date in the midst of a busy life with a variety of jewelry that keeps you fashionable and connected at the same time.

So, women of Billings, this one’s for you. May you find respite from your busy schedules in these pages and be as inspired as we were by the leading ladies all around you.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.” —Unknown

Happy Mother’s Day and happy May, Billings.

We’ll see you around.

The alarm can be heard from more than 50 feet away. The wearer only needs to position the top of the gemstone toward an attacker to have the greatest effect. Road Trip

As the warm summer air begins to warm the Rimrocks, it’s common to get the itch for a weekend getaway. For lifetime Montanan and

Billings resident Marni Cowan, this means a girls weekend, and, for her, there is one perfect cure for spring fever. It’s a place crafted for an ideal weekend retreat—a versatile paradise to unwind, indulge or let loose. Yes, for Cowan and the gang, the call is almost automatic. For these women, “Where should we go?” is almost certainly met with “Chico Hot Springs!”

Just over a two-hour drive from Billings, Chico Hot Springs Resort & Day Spa is located 30 miles north of Yellowstone National Park in Pray, Montana. First established in 1900, the property has become a prime getaway for Montanans seeking one stop to eat great food, relax in a serene environment, stay in style and experience top-notch entertainment, making it a must for a girls weekend getaway.RELAX

Those looking to melt into the beauty of Montana need to look no further than this gem in the Paradise Valley. Nestled at the base of the Absaroka Mountain Range, Chico Hot Springs offers a variety of chances for R & R.

“It’s just such a relaxing atmosphere,” Cowan says. “When you’re out in the pool soaking, there is open air and the mountains. It’s great.”

Visitors can soak in the natural waters of two open-air mineral pools that average 96 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit. The pool and hot tub include a poolside bar as well as access to Percie's Poolside Grille. Even more, the resort includes a spa with massage options, secluded on a hillside overlook.

"I graduated form Mossmain College of Therapeutic Massage in 2016. I became a Massage Therapist because I wanted to provide rest and relaxation for people in todays busy world. EAT

Let’s face it. Not everyone wants to settle for grabbing grub poolside. For Cowan, the dining in the Chico Dining Room is a must.

“The dining room is world-class,” Cowan says. “The food is amazing.”The Chico Dining Room provides an elegant, intimate atmosphere as well as

quality fine dining. Offering breakfast Monday through Saturday, a brunch buffet on Sunday and dinner nightly, the main space provides a full menu. Some of the resort’s most popular dishes include grilled ahi with Thai onion sauté and the rose-mary rack of lamb with basil-mint jelly.DRINK

What’s a girls weekend without a few drinks? With a full wine cellar on-site, Chico resort has been nationally recognized for its wine offerings.

“The wine list is beyond amazing,” Chico Hot Springs owner Colin Davis, says. “There are only two in the state and very few in the country that have been recog-nized on this level.”

In addition to fine wine, the resort features a full bar and The Chico Saloon, which houses a full bar and beer on tap.STAY

There’s no shortage of accommodations or styles in which to stay at the Chico resort. All in all the property features 112 rooms with 48 rooms located in the orig-inal Main Lodge. Housing antique décor and a cozy feel, the Main Lodge provides direct access to the pools. With no shortage of housing options on the 150-acre property, Cowan recommends staying in the resort’s Lower Lodge, which consists of modern rooms and four suites.

"We like staying in the Lower Lodge section because it’s still on the rustic side, but it has a newer look and feel,” Cowan says.ENTERTAINMENT

After a day of relaxing, Cowan and the crew like to cut loose at The Chico Saloon. The bar features live music on weekends and a dance floor. The Saloon also features video poker, foosball, keno machines, a pool table, shuffleboard and televisions. For Cowan, the entertainment at Chico feeds into the full experience.

“The best thing about Chico is the fun you have with all of your friends,” Cowan says. “It’s an experience.”

JANE H. SMITH, M.D. In 2001, Jane H. Smith, M.D., was bedridden,

facing Lyme disease, a series of health ailments, a grim diagnosis and few answers from Western medicine. She decided to take her fate into her own hands.

“I was supposed to die,” Smith says. “I had to rebuild my life from scratch.”

She turned to homeopathic and integrative medicine, and as she began to heal physically, she realized that to remain healthy she needed to go deeper. She went on what she describes as an intensive “wholeness journey.” As a result, she discovered an innovative form of “wholeness liv-ing” that has breathed new life into both her and her family. It motivated her to write a book, How to Build a Big, Unbreakable Life: An Invitation to Wholeness, and she now runs a wellness consulting company through her website, IDrJane.com.

“I knew that if I could make this simple so peo-ple can grab onto it, it would completely change their lives and they’ll love their lives,” Smith says.

It is this drive to spread wellness and joy to oth-ers that guides Smith throughout the day.

6   a.m. - 9 a.m.  Smith spends her mornings preparing for the week. She likes to schedule in “chunks," so Monday mornings are for answering emails, scheduling meetings and planning the week ahead. She says this is a crucial step in set-ting goals and prioritizing the days ahead.

9 a.m. – noon  Midmorning is all about strik-ing a healthy balance between career and family. During this time, she puts her plan in motion by engaging on social media, connecting with potential clients and managing marketing obli-gations. Also a home educator, she examines her son’s studies and arranges any co-ops or tutors that are needed for his success.

“I’ve learned  in a wholeness paradigm  I can have family and achievement in a very good bal-ance,” Smith says.

noon – 3 p.m. It’s action time. She gives individ-ual attention to clients, conducting interviews to see if clients are a good fit, deciding how to help individuals succeed through a customized plan and meeting with clients to drive growth within one-on-one sessions.

3 p.m. - 7 p.m. It’s time for group wellness ses-sions. She focuses on helping groups of friends, colleagues or team members work on wholeness and growth. Like her individual sessions, Smith customizes goals to fit group needs. CONTINUED >Jane H. Smith, M.D. Photo courtesy Jim Woodcock.

KATIE ELLISKatie Ellis has always been on the tall side,

which sometimes can make finding the right outfit a problem. Early on  as she developed her personal style she also discovered the undeni-able connections between beauty, confidence and warmth in clothing. Her experiences and a passion for fashion inspired her to eventually open Bottega Clothing, where she now focuses not only on supplying the newest trends but also working  with customers to find the style that makes them feel beautiful.

“I see clothes as a tool to help build confidence,” Ellis says. “I believe when we have an outfit on that we feel confident in we take on our world a little bit differently.”

Each day she helps people find this confidence and cultivates meaningful connections with cus-tomers, Bottega employees, the broader commu-nity and family.

6   a.m. - 9 a.m.  For Ellis, the morning is all about networking. She likes to kick off the week by meeting with other business owners and local nonprofit fundraising groups. She says this helps her hone her skills as a business professional and become a more productive leader.

9 a.m. – noon The store opens at 10 a.m., and Ellis likes to focus on bringing out the best in her employees even before customers arrive. She runs employee meetings which include practicing communicating effectively, confidence-building exercises and team-building programs.

noon – 3 p.m. For Ellis, afternoons are made up of researching new products and having employ-ees try them on. She says that by familiarizing herself with each product, she can recommend clothing for different body types.

3   p.m. - 7 p.m.  This time’s blocked off for participating in community fundraisers and events. She says building these connections throughout the community helps strengthen local bonds and her business. CONTINUED >

TRACY MOORETracy Moore’s life is anything but routine.

Her nearly decade-long career as a profes-sional photographer has taken her all over the world. Regardless of the location, her motivations remain consistent. She loves building relationships and bringing out her clients' best side. Operating mainly through her website, TracyMoorePhotography.com, she specializes in wedding photography and senior pictures.

“I really love getting into these girls’ lives and interacting through adventures,” Moore says.

Her day is spent preparing for these interac-tions and creating a fun, photogenic atmosphere.

6 a.m. - 9 a.m. Mornings for Moore mean preparation for the day. She connects with cli-ents through email and social media and spends mornings cleaning lenses, clearing memory cards, gathering lights and charging batteries to make sure she’s ready to take on the day.

9 a.m. – noon Moore spends midmorning hours scouting photo locations and traveling to shoots. She also likes to meet with clients to get a feel for their wants and expectations.

noon – 3 p.m.  It’s photo time. If clients like snowboarding, Moore will be taking pictures on the slopes. If they like hiking, she’s right there with them on the trails. She says it’s important to connect with clients in their element and have fun.

3 p.m. - 7 p.m. Shooting generally goes into the evening. Then it’s a quick snack and time to pack up the gear. She likes to have an adventure and tries to make every shoot unique and fun.

KRISTA STETSONSome people complain about diff icul-

ties. Others, like business owner Krista Stetson, turn them into businesses. Faced with excruciating headaches brought on by gluten intolerance and fed up with the poor quality of gluten-free stores, Krista and her mother, Tina, decided to create a bakery that featured entirely gluten-free products, free from any cross-contamination and safe for people with celiac disease. Located in Billings, Rae Rae’s Bakery uses f lour that is certif ied non-GMO, certif ied organic and certif ied gluten-free.

6   a.m. - 9 a.m.  Opening at 8 a.m., Stetson checks orders, examines shelves and prepares. This gives her a chance to see what she’s up against.

9 a.m. – noon  Throughout the morning and much of the day, Stetson is in charge of baking bread. Because Rae Rae’s doesn’t use preservatives, it is important to start fresh every morning.

noon – 3 p.m.    Rae Rae's usually sees a flood of customers in the afternoon. After baking all morning to stock shelves, she spends the afternoon answering questions and clearing them.

3 p.m. - 7 p.m.   In the evening, Stetson works to refill the shelves again. This is when she picks up most of the baking to prepare for the next morning.

TWO-WEEK-LONG TRIP

The luxury of longer trips is you can sneak more luxury into your luggage. Still, look for dress clothes that are dual-purpose like Eddie Bauer’s Departure Tropical Packable Blazer for men. It’s designed to go from “tarmac to trail” and features wrinkle-free, four-way-stretch material boasting mois-ture-wicking and UPF 50+ protection prop-erties. There’s an interior passport pocket holder and exterior pocket which the blazer folds into when it’s time to pack it. ($149, Rimrock Mall, 300 S. 24th St. W.)

Another jacket that folds into its pocket and comes in handy on longer trips when inclement weather is in the forecast is Orvis’ Lightweight Floral-Camo Anorak ($98, Orvis.com). Its durable water-repellent fin-ish helps you stay dry while its floral camo print reflects the trends seen on the runways.

T R AV E L I N G S T Y L EWHAT TO PACK DEPENDING ON TRIP

ARTICLE KATIE JACKSON

Trend Setter

Chances are you’ve stared at an empty duffel bag or a bursting suitcase whose zipper refuses to close for so long you’ve considered canceling a trip. But packing doesn’t have to be painful. It’s not an exact science,

but with a less-is-more approach and the right pieces, you’ll consider the contents of your luggage a carefully curated work of art. Here are a few different lengths of trips and items you should consider packing for each.

Red Oxx Mini Boss

RED-EYE FLIGHT

The king of carry-on bags, a bag that is approved by every airlines’ dimensions enforc-ers and comes with a no-questions-asked life-time warranty, is designed and manufactured in Billings. The new Mini Boss ($245) from Red Oxx (310 N. 13th St.) easily fits up to four days worth of stuff. So if it’s a quick trip, there's no need to check a bag.

For longer, double-digit-hour interna-tional flights, slip Savvy Travelers into your carry-on. These made-in-California dispos-able wipes will come to your rescue when you’re craving a shower, toothbrush  (yes, they have a mouth-cleansing wipe) or simply want to freshen up with an antiperspirant wipe or makeup remover. ($15 for the Jet Set, SavvyTravelers.com.)

ROAD TRIP

Historically road trips produce the best fodder for lifelong memories, but sitting for that long can be brutal. Since you’re confined to a car, it’s important to be com-fortable. Pack pants that allow you to curl up in the car and stretch your legs at rest stops. The best part? They don’t have to be unflattering. With their elegant pleats, pockets and ruched ankles, Encircled’s Dressy Sweatpants seem more like slacks ($148, Encircled.co).

Black leggings are also a wise pair of bot-toms to pack. Manduka’s Essential Leggings feature four-way stretch, so they wear like a second skin ($88, Manduka.com). Pair them with a tank top for an impromptu hike at a scenic pullout or a flowy tunic for a pit stop at a fancy restaurant along your route.

FOR ANY TRIP

Minimalistic jewelry that elevates a look while not being high maintenance is a must for a trip of any length. It will help you feel glam on long layovers or when your car is broken down on the side of the road. But, leave your most sentimental and valuable pieces safely at home, and opt for something like a Simplify bracelet from Life is Good ($28, LifeIsGood.com). It’s a reminder that when it comes to packing, less is often more.

WEEKEND JAUNT

When you’re at home, weekends are perfect for doing laundry. When you’re traveling, it’s the last thing you want to do. So pack clothes with a high wear-to-wash ratio like these minimalist merino essentials from Unbound Merino. Created for travelers, by travelers, these antibacterial, odor-resistant pieces for men can go weeks without being washed. The brand's best investment is its two-pack—two shirts, two pairs of socks and underwear ($200, UnboundMerino.com).

Ladies who don’t want to be seen in the same look, invest in staples like this luxu-rious bamboo Reversible Transfer Top from

Anywhere Apparel ($65, AnywhereApparel.com). The Minneapolis-based company also has a jacket that transforms into a bag, and all of its products are made in New York. Fun fact: the brand's  founders lived out of carry-on bags while circumnavigating the globe in 17 days.

If you break down and need to do laundry in your sink—or save water and wear it while you shower—pack pieces like underwear from ExOfficio. In drying time tests, the company’s best-in-class Give-N-Go boxers and briefs beat their cotton counterparts by a landslide ($38-$42, ExOfficio.com).
