May 2016Welcome to our May update

From the Chief Executive Officer 

On 20 April 2016, PASCOP members voted tochange our name to Meaningful Ageing Australia. Asdiscussed in our previous newsletter, the Boardchose this name as it captures our intent, and is adoor-opener for those who don't realise thatspirituality is everybody's business. The mediarelease is here.

Here at Meaningful Ageing Australia, we continue to meet many people who havewritten themselves, and those they are caring for, out of the spirituality story.  Ournew name helps to facilitate that important first conversation about the place ofspirituality in all our lives.  Our mission and activities are the same - our new webaddress is www.meaningfulageing.org.au and new email isadmin@meaningfulage.org.au. We will gradually update all our documents with thenew logo. Our old web address and email addresses will be diverted to the newaddresses. All phone numbers are the same.

We have had lots of interest in our activities from delegates at both the Spiritual CareAustralia National Conference and the ACS NSW/ACT state conference this monthwhere we ran trade displays. Welcome to all the newcomers from those events whosigned up for our newsletter! It's great to have an ever-expanding circle ofcolleagues committed to whole of life care for older people.

I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of our members over the last couple ofmonths and am enjoying getting great feedback about the resources we arereleasing this year.  Measuring Quality - a place for spiritual care?How to measure the effect of all our efforts is a common challenge in humanservices. Meaningful Ageing Australia is looking for opportunities to link our workwith sound quality measures that are appropriate for pastoral and spiritual care.

There are three current quality projects that have implications for organisationsnationally that we are looking in to. The SA Innovation Hub has been trialling use ofthe Personal Wellbeing Index that includes a domain for spirituality. They areusing  the Quality of Life AD tool with people who are cognitively impaired;  a NetPromoter Score to measure staff impact and the health of the environment; andfinally a checklist to examine partnerships. The Department of Health is working onvoluntary quality indicators to complement the accreditation standards, currentlyfocussed on three clinical areas in the first round of trialing. Macquarie Universityand the University of Wollongong are working on innovative approaches to outcomemeasurement. They are creating the Australian Community Care OutcomesMeasure, which includes quality of life measures adapted for Australia from the UKbased Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit. Watch this space as we continue to lookat how these projects may connect up with our efforts to ensure access to highquality pastoral and spiritual care for all older people in Australia.

NATIONAL GUIDELINES UPDATE

We are very excited to be getting close to having a finished product ready for thefree workshops to be held nationally during June. For current information about aworkshop in your nearest capital city, check our website here. We are working on acouple of short films to assist in communication about the Guidelines.  Plans areprogressing to assist agencies and organisations with understanding the intent of theGuidelines, and how to meet the expected outcomes. All this is to support the agedcare sector with higher quality, holistic care for old older people. Thank you to all theorganisations and individuals who have assisted over the length of this significantproject.

 

New resourceDementia-Specific Worship Service Handbook“Even though I have been leading worship in a dementiaspecific facility for seven years I was still able to learnsomething from the book. A truly wonderful resource!” -Frank, Aged Care Chaplain

Welcome - new board Member Odette Waanders

Odette  is  the  CEO  of  Palliative  CareVictoria,  a  position  she  has  held  sinceFebruary 2010. She has held  leadershiproles  in  policy,  advocacy  and  servicemanagement  with  government  and  notfor  profit  organisations  in  Australia  andNZ  focused  on  improving  quality  of  lifewith  a  particular  focus  on  older  people,people  with  disabilities  and  people  fromculturally  and  spiritually  diversebackgrounds.  The  communityorganisations she has worked for includeAged  Concern  NZ,  Aged  &  CommunityServices Australia,  Jewish  Care  Victoriaand  Catholic  Homes.  Odette  has  aBachelor  of  Social  Science,  BA  (Hons)1st  Class,  Masters  of  BusinessAdministration  and  GAICD.  We  aredelighted  to  report  that  Odette  wasappointed  to  the  PASCOP/MeaningfulAgeing  Australia  board  at  their  Aprilmeeting.  Read more  about  our  team  onour website.

Meaningful Ageing in Actiona story from member RFBI NSW/ACTby Lana Cooper, RFBI Lifestyle Officer

 

Hat trick for Show Champions  RFBI Hawkins Masonic Village’s Acacia House residents have been awardedNewcastle Show Champions for the most successful Nursing Home/Hostel forCookery in the region for the third year running!   In this year’s show our talented residents gained 1st place for their marmalade,lemon butter, pickles and jam and 2nd place for their cordial. 1st places for craft wereawarded to Dot Johnston and Edith Irvine and a highly commended was given toEdith Irvine, a special commendation to Beryl Plant and a special commendation forAcacia’s group project.   Participating in the show gives residents an important connection with the localcommunity. By spending time together cooking and undertaking craft for the Showresidents say they feel a sense of purpose and meaning. While undertaking theirprojects residents reminisced about their long standing history with the NewcastleShow – with former entrants, winners and judges amongst the group. Residents hada wonderful time reconnecting with their history and celebrating their involvement inthe community.  

Acacia House's Lifestyle OfficerTracy Burns said the residents lovedparticipating in the Show. "Over theyears we have taken the residentsto see their works displayed at theShow. They were thrilled to receivetheir trophies and we have theseframed and adorning our wall.
