Life Transformation

The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people do all the things unsuccessful people don't want to do.

Most people don't want to work more than they have to. They do the minimum they are paid to do. That's not the way to get ahead. Always do the best you can, not the least you can get away with. When you do your job, even if its just cleaning an office, do it as if somebody you want to impress is watching your every step. 

Success unshared is failure.If you've "made it" and don't help others out along the way — if you don't do something to make the planet a better place — you're not successful at all; you are a failure. But remember that you can't help everybody out. You have to focus and contribute in ways that you think are most beneficial.My mom instilled this philosophy in me. She always encouraged my brother and me to do good. She had us give to the Salvation Army

when we had no more than a dime and taught us that no matter how much someone has or doesn't have there is always somebody who is worse off.

You don't have to be good at everything to be successful.

Do what you do best and try to find others who can fill in by doing the things you are not good at. For instance, I am terrible at details — accounting especially, so I hire accountants to help me. This frees me up to focus on the things I do excel at and I can run a more efficient operation.The biggest hurdle people face in almost any business is rejection.

If you know this in advance and are mentally prepared for it, you'll have a much easier t ime staying upbeat and eventual ly succeeding.

4 Irreplaceable Tasks of the Senior PastorOne reason leadership can make a person feel isolated is the weight of responsibility on the one who claims to be the senior leader in an organization. Whether in the business world, in nonprofits or in churches, there are some things that happen in any organization that senior leaders help determine—whether intentional or not. In each of these cases, inactivity determines them just as much as activity.The weight of that responsibility can be overwhelming at times, but it’s unavoidable to a point. It comes with the position.Successful senior leaders are cognizant of their input in them and place intentional energy toward them.

Here Are Four Tasks of the Senior Leader:

Vision—The senior leader is the ordained caretaker of the organization’s vision. The vision may be predetermined by a board, or in the church’s sense, obviously by Jesus, but all leaders place their spin on implementing the vision. At the end of the day, the senior leader is held responsible for seeing that the organization’s vision is attained. And inactivity toward this will—as stated—also determine the vision—at least the perceived vision—by the organization.

Ministry Transformation

Values—The senior leader must carry out, protect or shape the culture of the organization. Much of the character of the organization will be determined or maintained by the way this person leads and lives his or her life. This is so true in the life of a church. The moral integrity of a church will seldom be greater than the pastor’s personal moral integrity.

Victories—Senior leaders determine what matters to an organization. They ultimately define a win by setting end goals primarily by what is most celebrated, acknowledged or rewarded. An organization cannot do everything and this individual’s leadership determines priorities, initiatives and major objectives to be accomplished. Senior pastors are one of the single greatest influences of what a church does well by the intentionality—or lack thereof—toward the things it labels a victory.

Velocity—The senior leader sets the speed by which the organization will operate. The lead person is in the role of balancing present tasks and future opportunities. His or her individual pace and expectations of others determines how fast the organization functions, changes, adapts and responds. The lead

pastor also sets the pace—fast or slow—of the church in accomplishing her mission.Most organizations will have a governing body—board of directors, stakeholders or elders—to oversee the organization, hire the senior pastor or CEO, and hold title to the organization, but it is ultimately the person in that role who daily carries out these four functions. A senior leader can delegate, form a great team environment, seek wise counsel or even shirk his or her responsibility, but to fulfill the role of the senior leader effectively there are some responsibilities that rest solely with this position. Whether or not the senior leader consciously recognizes his or her role in accomplishing these tasks, by shee r pos i t i on he o r she i s d e t e r m i n i n g t h e w a y t h e organization performs in these four areas.Are you a senior leader in your organization? LLOYD TURNER is a marketplace Christian who has a passion for spiritual history. He is a full-time project manager with BT Americas and formerly held faculty positions in Urban and Regional Planning at The University of Iowa and at Bryn Mawr College. He earned a Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of a book, Highways of Holiness: Preparing the Way for the Lord. He currently serves as the global coordinator for the Prayer Initiatives Group on t h e T r a n s f o r m O u r W o r l d w e b s i t e (www.transformourworld.org) and is a Co-Founder of the PrayForNewark network.

JOANNE TURNER is an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) credentialed as a clinical nurse specialist in neuroscience nursing and a nurse practitioner in Psych/Mental health. She has a passion to see whole populations experience wholeness and health drawing from best practices in medicine, nursing and her 30+ year walk with Christian increasing revelation in healing and deliverance ministry. She works full-time at Morristown Medical Center as an APN treating patients with stroke, brain tumor, seizure, headache as well as patients with behavior, emotional and motivational issues related to their medical diagnoses. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and graduate degrees in Adult Critical Care and Psych/Mental Health nursing across the continuum at Widener University and Rutgers. She is the founder of the Caring Network, Volunteer Services, a NJ non-profit corporation acknowledged by the IRS as a 501 C-3 public charity. She is a Co-Founder of the PrayForNewark network and has co-author of a book, The Street Adopter’s Handbook.

Meet The Turners!

Joanne and Lloyd Turner co-lead the not-for profit (501-C-3) organization.

TCNVS Established in 1994 as a replication project for Faith in Action – Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to provide care, charitable assistance, information, research and educational services through voluntary and paid personnel to the public and to institutions through publications, lectures, seminars, workshops and personal visits. Recognized by the IRS as a 501-c-3 nonprofit corporation.The Caring Network Volunteer Services is project based organization with projects organized into several key areas of service. First, the Prayer Networks to mobilize prayer for the advancement of the kingdom of God and includes PrayForNewark, the Global Day of Prayer and the House of Prayer Endeavor (HOPE). Secondly, Adopt a Street and Highways of Holiness take the Luke 10 model of Prayer Evangelism, a term coined by Ed Silvoso of Harvest Evangelism and explained in his book of the same title and applies them to cities and regions. Adopt a Street projects like the one initially started in Newark, NJ are now in over 1000 cities in 53 nations. The third a rea o f se rv ice i s in communi ty development. Distribution of backpacks, school supplies, food, and medical supplies are one aspect of this work. Others include S c h o l a r s h i p s , Yo u t h I n t e r n s h i p s , cooperation with other ministries in the Transformation Newark network and preparation for the 350th anniversary of the founding of the city of Newark.

The Logo – the spiral is a symbol for water w h i c h i s u s e d t h r o u g h o u t t h e scripture as a source of life, cleansing and God’s presence. As we engage people in all sorts of humanitarian projects we seek to draw them to Christ. As we enjoy intimacy with Christ, He propels us to the world.

The Prayer Net includes Seek God for the City, National Day of Prayer, Global Day of Prayer, Highways of Holiness Prayer and HOPE (House of Prayer Endeavor). These faith based projects connect congregations through intentional outreach then join resources to mobilize individuals in suburban NJ to inner city teams, particularly in Newark, NJ.

Seek God for the City is a Christ centered prayer guide distributed by TCNVS to about 1000 individuals and churches in the Newark metropolitan area that encourages corporate prayer for people and nations. Each year the churches that we support look forward to praying in unity for these “bigger than themselves” prayers. We sense the Lord is guiding us to mobilize “1000 tens” – small groups who are committed to growing in discipleship and prayer. The guide goes from Ash Wednesday until Palm Sunday and guides prayer for the entire world beginning in the Americas, then Europe, Africa, Asia the Middle East ending in Jerusalem.

National Day of Prayer is celebrated on the first Thursday in May every year. TCNVS celebrates at noon on the steps of City Hall in Newark and at the Presbyterian Church in New Providence in the evening. Each yea r s ince 2005 , T C N V S h a s l e d t h e Celebration of the Global Day of Prayer. The first two years were at PCNP and since 2007 the Pentecost Sunday 10-1-90 event has been in conjunction with ministries a n d c o n g re g a t i o n s i n Newark. Ten-One-Ninety refers to the observance of 10 days of day and night prayer from Ascension to Pentecost – the 1 day of United prayer on Pentecost and 90 days Each year since 2010 has been preceded with a call to a progressive fast and the past four years have been outdoors. TCNVS has purchased 3’x 5’ flags from 70 nations and is developing relationships with individuals from the nations living in the area. In 2012 individuals from 20 nations participated as well as nineteen congregations including PCNP mission partners Michael and Maria Westbrook from Greater Life and participants from World Impact, another PCNP mission partner.

ADOPT A STREET AND HIGHWAYS OF HOLINESSAdopt A Street is an international project founded by Lloyd and Joanne Turner of the Caring Network, Volunteer Services. The first city to pray for its streets was Resistencia, Argentina in 2005 and now over 600 prayer initiatives are registered with an additional 1000 in Indonesia that are not registered. Adopt –a-Street model has been implemented in 409 US cities in 30 states. There are 14 nations in the Americas, 12 Asian, 12 European, and 12 Africa or Middle Eastern nations.

PrayForNewark has over 1300 registered intercessors, quarterly street adopter’s meetings with co-sponsoring ministries or congregations and weekly or bi-weekly prayer gatherings in the PrayForNewark office in Newark. The Street Adopter's Handbook has been translated into Chinese and international conference calls are held to engage and support the various projects around the world. Regionally, Plainfield has reached 100% adoption, Elizabeth is nearing 100%, Jersey City is making progress. Interviews for radio shows, Christian TV and invitations to churches from the projects are ongoing.

Highways of Holiness is the name of Lloyd Turner’s book that ties the principles of prayer evangelism from Luke chapter 10 to the land by way of a road and to history by the connection to what God has done in the past. It was also the inception of the Street Adoption project described below.

I n 2 0 1 4 , 8 8 m i l e s o f H i g h w a y 7 8 w e r e b e dedicated by believers all a l o n g t h i s r o u t e , culminating with prayer at Divident Hill in Newark, the s i te of the c i ty’s f i r s t dedication as a city whose founders wanted it to become “as nearly as possible a kingdom of God on earth.”

In June of 2015 Lloyd and Joanne wi l l be traveling to Hong Kong to work with the growing teams of marketplace and congregationally based intercessors that have adopted the b locks , streets, businesses and apartment buildings in Hong Kong for prayer.

HOPE the House of Prayer Endeavor is a project strategically reaching out to see the region become a “House of Prayer for all the Nations” (Isaiah 56:7). Presently over 20 nations are represented and will next gather on Unity Day which is the 90th of the 90 Days of Blessing from the Global Day of Prayer.

An additional aspect of HOPE is the development of Prayer Ministry Teams in the 19 transformational churches that we work with in Newark as well as a prototype curriculum that can be replicated throughout the cities where we have influence through the Street Adoption projects.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Transformation Newark includes Economics of Poverty, Emergency Relief, Newark Nite Out, Food D i s t r i b u t i o n , I n t e r n a t i o n a l Transformation Network (Harvest Evangelism) Seeds of Hope “Seeds of HopeThe Caring Network, is a partner with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. Volunteers participate with food distribution out of the M a n n a S t a t i o n i n N e w a r k . Distribution currently occurs every Friday Night.

The International Transformation Network is a coalition of Christians from 70 nations who meet monthly by conference call for prayer and several times a year in various regions to encourage each other to “Think globally, Act locally”. TCNVS has had a presence at these conferences since 2001. The presentation from most recent conference in Brantford, Ontario June 26-29 is attached as an example of the way that street adoption is being embraced.

“Seeds of Hope” is the name given to our mini-grant project where by we provide small funds to i n sp i r e c r ea t i v i t y f rom ou r volunteers. From Greater Life’s Lemonade Stand that ra ised $600.00, to a baby bottle coin campaign in a Christian School which raised over $1000.00 for the Pregnancy Center, these mini-grants are being used by the Lord to infuse hope all over the region.Lloyd has been recently developing ideas associated with poverty and freedom and has been receiving rich insights from the Lord regarding three mindsets (complacency, covetousness and bitterness) that o p p o s e J o y , P e a c e a n d Righteousness. These insights have shared in the class that he leads for Adult Education at PCNP for the Streams class and were developed into his next book Proclaiming the Kingdom that was be presented orally at the October International Transformation Network conference in Honolulu in the fall of 2014..

Newark Youth Internship Program: Eighteen young men have successfully completed the Youth Internship Program developed and initially funded by TCNVS. This mentorship, discipleship and job skills program has the potential to be multiplied many times over.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Unity Day –The city of Newark’s new mayor came to one of our PrayForNewark volunteers and asked if they could help sponsor what for the l a s t t w o y e a r s h a s b e e n a n opportunity for faith communities to come together to seek peace in the city. PrayForNewark has been asked to support the Mayor’s goal of reaching out to needy families in the city. We feel a special call to this project because in ties together the Global Day of Prayer (90th day of blessing), the HOPE project and bringing the nations together as the Mayor specifically asked for the flags to be there and the penetration of the street adoption project as over 5000 people saturate one of the cities most challenging streets with prayer and praise.

Current Opportuni t ies for Participation:Street Adopter ’s for Prayer. Presently thirty five streets are being prayed for by PCNP members or recent members. About that many have come into Newark for a special events or prayer gatherings. There is a great opportunity for people to begin to get connected with the needs of the city with a s imple commitment such as adopting a street for prayer. The next quarterly street adopters meeting is July 11, 2015 “Cal l ing a l l Na t ions” - Representatives from all the nations of the earth are invited to celebrate their nations uniqueness and to carry their nations flag on Global Day of Prayer May 24, 2015Plan to attend the PRMI Dunamis event October 2015, for training in prayer ministry. Joanne is partnering and serving on the faculty for this event. We thank God for the

They had no choice but to scrape together the $2,000 nonrefundable deposit.

It's a lot of money to plunk down for a four-week music program, but Paul and Andrea Valerius of Newark realize dreams are not just for when you are sleeping.

Their son, Josiah, who was born with inner ear hearing loss in both ears, wants to be a music producer and nothing has stopped him. Despite the condition, he taught himself how to play the drums and guitar, and he has trained himself to know how music should sound. That's not easy to do when his hearing is about 60 percent.

Now, add piano lessons to this arrangement and what you have is a 17-year-old young man with a musical trifecta – and a creative gift that makes him a vessel for excellence in music.

That's his motto, Josiah says, and the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University agrees with him. The Arts High School junior has been accepted into Tisch's prestigious Summer High School Program through the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. It offers specialized training in music business entrepreneurship and courses on the latest technology used to record music.

The experience, however, is not cheap and that's what had the Valerius family wondering in March what they would do after they provided the down payment.The balance is $8,600 and it's due by May 14.

"How could we not support his dream," his mother says. "We had to let him go for it."

His road to $10,600 over the past two months has included time spent selling snacks to classmates from his backpack. Someone is probably munching on a treat right now. On weekends, Josiah and his family held breakfast fundraisers at an Applebee's in Union; the latest effort, this past Sunday, included a car wash in the restaurant parking lot.

Josiah pulled in $690, but it's not enough to get him over the edge. He also has a G o F u n d M e p a g e ( g o f u n d m e . c o m /Josiahjv), and the public has been coming through for the kid. He's now within $1,500 of his goal, given by donors who read about his drive and passion.

Josiah works hard, and although he has youthful energy, his ability to balance his education and music is amazing.

He has a 4.28 grade point average and he's part of two college bound programs – Pathways to College and NJLEEP. Musically, Josiah is already helping other teens develop their musical talent and constantly dissecting songs, looking for creative arrangements in gospel, hip hop and rhythm & blues.

He and a buddy, Jonathan Stamper, who attends Brick Memorial High School, formed "Dominant Collective," a musical group on a mission to bring back integrity to music through word play, alliteration and allegories.

"You don't need to talk about sex and cursing in every song because that's what the music label tells you to do,'' Josiah says. "You can be a successful artist in the music industry by simply making great music in a clean way."

Josiah arranges the music; Jonathan takes care of the lyrics and melody. Last year, before Jonathan moved to Brick Township, they pulled together the talent at Arts High to create a soulful, hip hop version of the school song called the "Green and Gray." They made a video of the song and posted it on YouTube.

"He doesn't do anything halfway," Stamper says. "When he commits to something, he commits all the way."

Earlier this month, the group won first place in the New Jersey Shout Down Drugs competition with an antidrug song that Josiah composed. Arts High Vice Principal James Manno says he told the student body about the event and that Josiah was the only one to follow through and enter.

Josiah's life is hectic, but he has faith to keep him grounded. He's a member of Central Assembly of God Church in Newark, where it's a family affair. His dad is a minister and his mom plays the saxophone. Josiah leads the youth worship team, teaching kids in the group how to play instruments. Among the members are his younger sisters, Grace, on keyboard, and Faith, who plays guitar.

Sunday is not the only day that Josiah is in church. On Wednesday nights, he plays drums for a bible study group; on Saturday evenings, he's behind the keyboard for members of the Restoration Church for Ex-Offenders. In between, he could be raising funds or competing in musical contests, as he did this past weekend.

"We want him to have faith," his father says. "God is showing him that if he's faithful, it's going to affect all areas of his life, not just for money, not just for music, but his life."

Josiah takes nothing for granted. He knows tomorrow is not promised and he knows what he has to do to reach his goal.

"I want to take the most of every day that I'm given and leave behind as much as I can to inspire as many people as I can," he says.

The thought strikes him deeply. Music is his platform to affect the masses, the voice he uses to say something meaningful.

Once he reaches the $10,600 mark, the Tisch music program will know what's on his mind, too.

There may be classes available locally or at your local hospital’s pain clinic.

One of the hardest things many guys find with meeting women is the initial approach. Some guys are just naturals at it. Other guys are just so arrogant, self centered or drunk at the time they don’t care about rejection. But the majority of men don’t find breaking the ice all that easy.

Thoughts of rejection pop into their heads. What will I say? What will she say? How will she react? Am I good enough for her? And these thoughts go on and on until guys come to the conclusion of thinking, what's the use, and never even open their mouths to speak to her.

Meeting Women

Approaching women, just l ike with approaching anyone in everyday life, takes a l i t t le degree o f conf idence and practice. It’s kind of like having a sales job, especially when you are just hoping to meet a women for companionship and not being preoccupied with having an immediate long term relationship with every woman you try to talk to. This is partially why the divorce rate is so high... We try to go from just meeting someone to being married and "living happily ever after" on the first date.

Again, like in sales, you shouldn't get so personally involved so quickly, and you should have the mindset that it isn't such a terrible thing if you get rejected or not. You will simply just move on to the next candidate that has potential and interests you.

Good salesmen are the ones that have the ability to divorce their feelings from the sale and can easily accept and deflect rejection without it upsetting their confidence and rhythm. They know that for every rejection they get, they are one step closer to closing a deal. It’s the law of averages. Meeting women works very much the same way.

So guys if you are really desiring to be in a relationship know that every time you ask someone out you getting that much closer to find a person whom you might be able to share your life with.

The Church Is A Good Thing by Curtis D. Mincey

I am aware of the fact that there is a lot of church bashing going on. There are a lot of people out there, myself included that have jumped on the church bashing bandwagon. I don't know why this is. Maybe it's because of some type of demonic influence that we have to repent of. Or maybe our pride causes us to open our mouths to complain, instead of bowing our heads to pray. Or maybe it's because it easier to judge another person/ministry than it is to judge ourselves. But whatever the reason is I will publicly say I am sorry. Yes it is wrong for me to say anything negative about the church. Because when I speak negatively about the church I speak negatively about Christ. And the truth is Christ has done nothing wrong. As a matter of fact the Church of Christ is doing exactly what it is supposed to be doing.

Think about this for a moment. It is because of the true Church of Christ that lives are being transformed. Millions of people have come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Souls have been saved from the fire of an eternal hell. People all over the world have been healed from sickness and delivered from the demonic oppression of drug and alcohol addiction. Our sins have been forgiven and we have had our peace with God restored. Which is the most

important type of peace that we could ever receive. Our lives have literally been changed to the point that we don't look the same, dress the same, talk the same or act the same.

When you really think about it people have been fed, clothed, housed and even educated in church. People have been given opportunities to use their God given talents to serve the church. The gospel was preached and people responded to the good news in the church. Now that I really think about it is because of the church that I am still alive today. My ancestors were praying for me in the church.

The church isn't just a cool building with bunch of cool people in it. The church is a living, breathing functioning organism. Made up of sinful people who bring in all their baggage of the past with them. Yet it consist of many parts that serve many functions. Some preach, some teach, some lead, while others help. But whatever the role of the individual, the body as a whole is doing what it is supposed to be doing. And it does this, not so that individual men and women or congregations would gain recognition. But all of this happens because Christ is the head of the church, to God be the glory.
