Fund Drive, Here We Come!Alan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
On June 2nd, all of us in the WAMC family will commence our spring-summer fund drive. You have got to realize that you are just as big a part of this event as the WAMC staff is. The last fund drive was quite a miracle. In about four days, we (and I mean “we” as in all of us) raised a million dollars because we all understood that the way to make everything go faster was to feed the locked box before the fund drive. It turns out that the locked box is the best thing to happen since sliced bread. It’s there for just one reason – to hold money in reserve for the fund drive. Every penny that is in that box comes from people like you. Some give because they want to make the drive go faster. Some are truly worried about the physical and mental health of the staff as they approach yet another Herculean effort. Some just love the contest. They are fascinated by the effort of our community to make something happen that no one has ever done before.
Let’s face it; none of this would be happening if it weren’t for you. Without each WAMCer making a decision of conscience, the miracle of the November

Get out and enjoy the sun with WAMC.
The sun is shining, the daffodils are blooming, and it’s the perfect weather to get outdoors. Now, most people would think that this is counterintuitive. I mean, do we really want you to leave your cars or home and radios behind? Of course not! Did you know can take WAMC with you on the go? That’s right, we can be where ever you are via your smartphone, tablet, and of course any of your listening devices. The WAMC app has been updated for iPhones and androids and you can always stream WAMC and WAMC2 HD on-line, so you can always get to our website and listen while on the go as well.
So… this Memorial Day, when you’re on your way to your BBQs, cooking up a storm, or enjoying the weather, keep your radios and devices tuned to WAMC because we have an awesome line-up of special programming.
At 9AM, beginning right after Morning Editionwith David Guistina, we join host Charlie Warren for the two hour special A Salute in Song For Memorial Day. The program is highlighted by music of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf, touching also on Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It documents our country’s strife over our entry into some wars, but respectfully acknowledges the hardships of combat and honors our fighting men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
Following at 11AM is The Harry Nilsson Special

drive just wouldn’t have happened. We see newspapers and radio stations and public TV stations downsizing and even going out of business. There is, however, something so unique about WAMC that we have never seen failure or even considered failure as an option. With that said, three or four years ago when bad things were happening all around, our own situation got tough. We took some steps to make the station as tightand productive as it could be. There were short-lived furloughs, a few people left and their responsibilities were divvied up among all of us who remained. We looked at each other and said that this could never happen again. As a result of what each of you has done, we are in a much healthier place today.
Now we are getting ready for another fund drive. Spring has sprung. Flowers are emerging from the ground. We are basking in a sunlight that many of us thought would never come again and we are gratefulthat our faithful listeners are with us as never before. We know that because the number of people who tune into the radio station is growing. We know because the last fund drive went so well. We know it because so many of you write and call and tell us what the radio station means to you.
Back in 1979 when it looked like the station was cooked, we learned that if you just made the case, people would get it and do their share. Now we face the next round. We hope that two things will happen to make us whole. The first is that we exceed the record breaking locked box collection of the last time. Some will donate in memory of Pete Seeger. Some will say, “This is fun, we can do it.” Some will think about what they get every day from the station, from The Roundtable to All Things Considered to the Tanglewood concerts. Listeners will acknowledge the guts and independence that the station shows when it comes to speaking truth to power and giving every voice a chance.
The second, of course, is a challenge. To the folks who have a little more and who can issue a challenge that will encourage others to give, we say please. Challenges work. You have heard it happen time and again. Everyone gets excited and things move faster. If you want to join the folks who do this we ask that you consider a challenge gift, no matter how much that is.
As I have always said, we’re all in this together. Volunteer, give, get others to give. Or as Gladys’ father used to say to her, “Just do it.” We love you all. - Alan

Schmecial. American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson is best known for his songs “Everybody’s Talkin’”, “Coconut” and “Without You”. In this one-hour show, we’ll hear how Nilsson followed his own path. Part iconoclast and part storyteller, his curiosity, his sense of humor and dramatic flair led him to create an extremely wide range of music. Throughout the hour we’ll hear Nilsson’s work and talk with friends and family about the man and artist.
Noon brings us Midday Magazine with host Jim Levulis. We’ll have the latest news from around the region, including special Memorial Day pieces, and your daily weather report.
We’ll hear President George H.W. Bush’s Liberation of Kuwait speech at 2PM on The Power of Words. Afterwards, Alan Chartock speaks with Dr. Richard Pfau about the speech and they discuss the importance of it in American and world history.
So, take us with you as you travel, bask in the sun, or enjoy a long relaxing weekend. - Katie

100-Point Market Declines Aren’t What They Once WereProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
If you’re an active investor, you probably follow the movement of the financial markets at least somewhat regularly. If so, you have no doubt noticed what appears to be considerable fluctuation — in the form of triple-digit movements of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the most widely watched market indices. Should you be concerned about these movements — especially when their direction is downward?
At first glance, a 100-point drop might look rather ominous. But is it?
It might have been — about three decades ago. When the Dow stood at about 1,100, a 100–point fall would have meant a nine percent drop in one day — which would probably have qualified as a significant event. But today, with the Dow hovering around 15,000, a 100-point fall only translates to a 0.7 percent decline — not such a big deal.
Actually, it’s not that unusual for the stock market to drop by ten percent about once a year, though this decline usually takes place over a period of several weeks, rather than in a single day. To put this figure into the context of the Dow at 15,000, a ten percent decline would be a drop of 1,500 points.
So, although we have seen some volatility and a few 100-point drops in the past several weeks, we still haven’t reached the level of a fairly normal decline. But even if we do get there, should you be greatly concerned?
As mentioned above, market declines are both normal and frequent. However, many people, especially those who are fairly new to investing, misinterpret these declines as a sign that there is something “wrong” with their investments. Consequently, they may sell some of these investments or even take a “time out” from investing — both of which can be mistakes. Selling investments when their price is down violates the first rule of investing — “buy low and sell high.” And, as far as taking a “time out” from investing, you could find yourself on the “sidelines” when the next market rally begins, thereby missing out on opportunities for potential gains.
The more you know about the workings of the financial markets, the less likely you’ll be to over-react to declines. For example, what causes market volatility? At any given time, a number of factors could be responsible: political turmoil abroad, disputes over policy in Washington, concern about potential Federal Reserve actions, and so on.
It’s important to understand, however, that these factors are often short-term in nature — and so are their effects on the market. To be a successful long-term investor, you’ll want to examine the fundamentals of any individual investment you’re considering. When looking at a stock, ask these questions: Does the company have a good management team in place? Are its products competitive? Is the stock priced fairly, relative to its earnings? When evaluating a bond, make sure it’s considered “investment grade” by one of the major bond rating agencies. And when looking at a mutual fund, examine its stated objectives, its track record in all different economic environments, its level of diversification and other key factors.
If you’ve chosen quality investments, possibly with the assistance of an experienced financial professional, and these investments are suitable for your risk tolerance and time horizon, you really shouldn’t have to worry about market declines. In fact, although it may sound counter-intuitive, you might even welcome these periodic downturns. For one thing, they will give you a chance to see how your investments respond in different market environments. Also, a declining market may well give you the opportunity to purchase quality investments at lower prices — again, the “buy low” principle is worth considering.
By having confidence in your choice of investments, and by being prepared to take advantage of the possibilities presented in a market downturn, you’ll be well prepared to cope with those supposedly “dizzying” triple-digits drops in the Dow.
