MUSICAL

You can’t stop the beat!

It’s 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire: to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network - all without denting her ‘do!

Now it’s Taranaki’s turn to share in the Broadway’s musical-comedy phenomenon.

Described as “children’s theatre at its magical best”, this highly energetic and captivating show from Capital E National Theatre for Children will transport children through song, dance and puppetry into the heart of our ever-changing seasonal calendar. Children will experience a magical journey into nature’s world of living things, colours and sounds with the excitement of spring’s new life, summer’s long hot days and the blast of autumn colour leading us to the stark and vivid winter world.

Following sell-out seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Sydney Opera House, the live stage show of Lynley Dodd’s ‘Hairy Maclary and Friends’ will be springing off the page these July school holidays at the TSB Showplace. This hugely popular show, timed to coincide with Hairy Maclary’s 30th birthday celebrations, is packed with music, singing, colourful costumes and all your favourite Hairy Maclary stories.

The New Plymouth Operatic Society has existed in some form for at least 120 years. NPOS was reformed after a brief recess on 30 July 1952, and every year since then New Plymouth Operatic have been bring the best musical theatre in the world to the audiences of Taranaki. Since 1952 NPOS has produced 86 productions, with the New Plymouth Opera House (now the TSB Showplace) being the ‘home’ to most of New Plymouth Operatic’s productions.

The cans of hairspray used • on stage in hairspray are not actually real hairspray! To ensure the safety of the performers, the show uses a product called a ‘mister’ which is imported from the United States especially for use on stage in the show!

Perhaps the most significant event in the society’s history has been the saving of the Opera House. The theatre faced demolition in 1969 when its owners ran into financial trouble. Operatic Members campaigned fearlessly to save the Opera House, in 1972 the Society gifted the theatre to a trust for the people of New Plymouth.

Today, the society is in its 61st year and the Operatic show is one of the highlights in the Taranaki arts calendar each year. Previous shows include Sound of Music, Cats. Annie, Evita and Wizard of Oz among many, many more!

KAHA Short Works from Atamira Dance Company, celebrates the strength and pride of Maori contemporary dance. This is a high energy and engaging show featuring the freshest and best from New Zealand’s leading Maori contemporary dance company. KAHA is comprised of seven short works choreographed by members of the company, encompassing a range of styles and themes including traditional HAKA, complex choreographic ensemble, duet, quartet, a heart-wrenching solo and a classic from the company’s repertoire. The evening also shows it is up-to-speed with modern pop culture, with a full stage version of “Poi E Thriller” – as seen in the smash hit Kiwi movie Boy, cleverly showcasing the diversity of contemporary dance and of the company.

WE CATCH UP WiTH ATAMiRA DANCE COMPANY’S ARTiSTiC DiRECTOR, MOSS PATTERSONHi Moss! You did a workshop here last year and it’s great to see you back with the company for a performance. Have you performed in New Plymouth before?

No, never so we are really excited to be coming!

Are workshops and education an important part of Atamira Dance Company?

Yes absolutely. Sharing our ideas and vision as artists is a natural part of what we do. I don’t so much see it as education but more about having creative conversations with people and being courageous enough to push the boundaries about what we think we know or what we can do with our bodies. Dance is a natural way of expressing

the romantic World War II – music which captivated millions of people worldwide

Even after 75 years, Glenn Miller’s musical arrangements are still heard around the world - timeless icons of American culture such as Chattanooga Choo-Choo, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, A String of Pearls, Moonlight Serenade and Little Brown Jug to name a few.

How would you describe KAHA Short Works?

A great night out where you and your friends can be thrilled, have a laugh, be intellectually stimulated and want to get up and dance with us at the end!

Do you have a favourite of the short works?

I really like Nancy Wijohn’s new work Paarua or double contact. It’s about sporting tactics and the mind games we play with each other when in competition. She’s very clever!

How would you describe the show in three words?

Fun, physical and courageous.
