May is a time of celebration, remembrance and transition. We begin the month with multiple

celebrations, starting with the always fun and festive Cinco de Mayo. I love that we get to keep that Fiesta spirit going for a little bit longer as we celebrate a part of our rich cultural heritage here in San Antonio.

Mother’s Day is the following weekend, on May 12th. Mark your calendars and be sure to plan something special to show gratitude and love to your mom on this Sunday. I am so thankful for my own mom and the wonderful example that she has been for my siblings and me. Small in stature—my brothers and I tower over her— my mother has a big heart, always showing unconditional love and spirit. To borrow words from Shakespeare, “though she be but little, she is fierce.”

My mom has always played a very major part in my life, and is now very close to my son and my daughter. I have always said that Mom is the glue that binds my family together. We love you, Mom! While I am writing this letter, she also seems to be holding together our extended Spurs family as we head into the playoffs. She rarely misses a game, and even though the Spurs are written off every year, San Antonio continues to put together a team that everyone – especially Mom – can be proud of! In honor of every mother who keeps her family together, turn to pages 8-9 in this issue of Welcome Home, where readers have shared tributes to their own mothers.

May is also a month of remembrance, as we observe Memorial Day on the 27th. I am always grateful to live in Military City

USA on this holiday, because the people of San Antonio have a deep reverence and appreciation for the sacrifices of our military men and women and their families. May we never take for granted the high cost at which our American liberties are earned.

For many in our community, this month is also a very transitional time of year. With school wrapping up and summer right around the corner, teachers and families are celebrating the end of classes and looking forward to summertime activities. For graduating seniors who are coming to the end of their high school careers, this transition may be the greatest they have ever faced. The Stone Oak Business Association once again had the privilege of granting scholarships to eight seniors from Reagan and Johnson high schools, who will be announced this month. The many scholarship applications confirmed what we already knew – the Class of 2013 is full of bright young leaders who are full of potential. I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make on the world in the coming years.

Also in a transition in May? Our Spurs! You’ll find me at every home playoff game, cheering on our boys right alongside their number one fan – my mom. Go Spurs GO!

Is there anything more precious than the love shared between a mother and a daughter? Liezel Thompson, the

beautiful mom featured on Welcome Home’s May cover, is joined by her daughter, Lily, who will be turning two this summer.

Having Lily in her life has been a wonderful lesson in love and selflessness for Liezel, and she has embraced motherhood with open arms.

“There is so much I love about being a mom,” Liezel shared. “I couldn’t have anticipated my heart expanding this much – each snuggle, struggle over dinner, kiss, bedtime story, tantrum, prayer, sleepless night, unconditional love and each new discovery…I wouldn’t change a thing!”

This Mother’s Day, Liezel and her husband, Mark, have even more reason to celebrate the holiday. They are eagerly anticipating the birth of their second daughter, Nina, this month.

“I am in awe of and so grateful for the life growing inside of me,” said Liezel. “Every movement reminds me that God, who called each star by name, also called me to be a mama to two of His princesses.”

Even as Liezel celebrates her role as a mother to her sweet little girls this month, remember to express your gratitude to your own mom. Turn to pages 8-9 to read on as members of our community share the impact that their own moms have had on their lives.

Congratulations Class of 2013! In the commencement address will be advice about

working hard, about goals and that you can be anything you want to be (although the closest I ever got to my “be a princess” goal was being called a “royal pain”- so I joined the Army). Looking back, I can’t help but think that some helpful wisdom was left out, so here goes.

As part of your education, you learned that the world revolves around the sun but when you move that tassel from one side to the other, it marks the beginning of a new journey where you will discover that the world does not revolve around you! There will be new “pseudo-parents” out there who are going to be only too happy to help you learn this.

First, and foremost, will be your boss. Although he won’t care if you stay out all night, he will expect you to meet your 8 a.m. curfew and to be courteous and professional until curfew ends at 5 p.m. (if you have all your responsibilities taken care of, that is. Otherwise, the 5 p.m. thing is negotiable).

Then there are your neighbors. They do not care if you “pick up your room!”(you have to live in it) or “clean up your dishes!” (you have to smell them) or “turn out those lights, they waste electricity!” (you have to pay for it). They will, however, expect your yard to be kept up and the noise level to be kept down.

In addition, just as you are relishing your new-found freedom from your parents arcane rules, there is Officer Friendly who will insist that you follow all these other “draconian” rules such as having liability

insurance, an updated license, no beer on the vehicular premises and those pesky speed limits that you see next to the Children At Play signs.

Your landlord will also have a few expectations, such as being paid rent on time and not damaging her property. Otherwise, she will happily move your belongings to a new location (probably Goodwill) and re-key the locks.

Welcome, graduate, to The School of Life! As the music plays and you see tears in the eyes of the two people who love you more than their own lives, know that it is not because they feel they were too tough on you but that now, maybe they feel they were not tough enough…

Presley Price is a 15-year-old sophomore at Louis D. Brandeis High School, where she is a scholar and athlete.

Presley became an ambassador for San Antonio during a preliminary for the Miss Texas and Miss America Outstanding Teen program. The Miss America organization is unique in that titleholders adopt a platform that is near and dear to them. Presley has been busy sharing her program TABout (Teens Against Bullying) at elementary and middle schools, as well as at youth organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs and SA Youth. She shares the impact and tragedies that affect bullied victims. Presley also emphasizes the importance of speaking up and not being a bystander when witnessing a bullying act and always seeking help from an adult. Along with this,

she also focuses on growing youth’s self-esteem and confidence. Her motto is “Go to B.A.T.” as a reminder to always do your best. B.A.T. stands for Be yourself, Always dream big, and Take charge of your life.

Presley is also very busy in the community as an ambassador to the wonderful city of San Antonio and surrounding communities. She has had the privilege of assisting Ronald McDonald House, Epilepsy Foundation, Alzafar Shriners IHOP NPD, Flight to the North Pole, Wounded Warriors, Hill Country Ministries and Family Services, as well as the Rodeo and Fiesta.

Presley has adopted Aue Elementary School and has shared her story with the first, fourth and fifth graders.

“It is a wonderful school,” said Presley, “and the counselors are phenomenal and very attentive to the students. I love visiting Aue!”

Members of the 10 West Business Association came together with fellow businesspeople for a

lunchtime networking event on March 21 at Maggiano’s Little Italy. Entitled “Growing A Successful Business,” the meeting featured keynote speaker Rusty Belden, Vice President of Belden’s Automotive and Tires. Belden’s Automotive has become a local San Antonio institution, and is a great model for fellow small business owners of a successful, family-run local business. During his presentation, Rusty shared examples of how Belden’s has worked to successfully market their business, draw a loyal client base, and expand their business to continue providing top-notch service throughout the city.

More than 40 members of the 10 West Business Association, guests and business representatives from the community gathered to enjoy lunch and some time spend networking with representatives from other area businesses. Following time for casual conversation upon arrival, each attendee had the opportunity to introduce themselves and their business to the association. Door prize winners were chosen for several fun items donated by 10 West members to conclude the event.

The 10 West Business Association wishes to thank Maggiano’s for hosting the luncheon, Rusty Belden for his presentation, and the 10 West community for the wonderful response to the organization’s events thus far. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend one of 10

Three first-year and three veteran

teachers were named District Educators of the Year at special celebrations held annually to honor teachers who give 100 percent when it comes to improving the lives of children. In addition, Northside’s Nominee for the 2013 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching was announced.

The 2013 Northside Educators of the Year are Debra Seaman of Thornton Elementary School, Christian DeBerry of Hobby Middle School and Ben Hernandez of Brandeis High School.

The 2013 Northside First Year Educators of the Year are Joe Garay of Valley Hi Elementary School, Courtney Lemley of Briscoe Middle School and Sarah Goldsmith of Jay Science & Engineering Academy.

And, the District’s nominee for the 2013 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching Award is Isabel Anaya from Kuentz Elementary School.

In addition to receiving engraved plaques, first-year awardees received checks for $250, and the veteran teachers

and Trinity nominee received $500 checks. A panel of NISD educators selected the District winners from among the 197 campus Educators of the Year. All campus winners were deemed “Simply the Best” at the District’s Educator of the Year celebrations, held March 19 and 20 this year.

The celebration has been dubbed “Simply the Best,” because the campus winners parade into the auditorium to Tina Turner’s famous song by the same name. Winners were given the red-carpet treatment by whirling spotlights, cheering family members, and co-workers hoisting signs and banners. Happy Mother’s Day!To all of the moms in our lives, thank you for every act of caring and selflessness on our behalf.

Hello. I’m here to tell you about my mom, Valerie. She is very helpful, caring and loving. One way she is helpful is she helps me with my homework. Whenever I am stuck on a problem, whether it is math, reading, science or writing, she will help me. Another thing she does is the laundry. Whenever I need some clean clothes she will make sure my clothes are clean for me. The last thing is cleaning. She is always cleaning, dusting and vacuuming to make our house look nice.

My mom is also loving and caring. One way she is loving is she can cheer me up when I’m sad. For example, when I have had a bad day and just want to be in a bad mood, she cheers me up by telling me it’s ok and that tomorrow will be better. Another way she is caring is when she gives me medicine when I am sick or a pill when I have a headache to make me feel better. She loves me. She always hugs me when she gets home from teaching piano lessons. She takes care of my brother and me and our whole house whenever my dad has to be deployed.

That is all I can tell you about my favorite mom. Bye for now.

The love of a mom is the purest love we have. Hello, I’m going to tell you about why my mom is special to me. She loves me and cares for me.

My mom cares for me by paying for me. She pays for my dance class, which is really expensive, and I love dance. Without my mom I would never go there. “I’m pretty hungry!”

Mom to the rescue. My mom has you covered, she’s always there for a meal. 96 times 89, I’ll never find the answer. Lucky for me, I have a mom who could do these questions like that. “Another sheet of homework, ugh!”

Here’s why my mom loves me. She gives me hugs and kisses, she does it so gently, nicely, and lovely. I love it when my mom walks me to bed. When she tucks me in I feel like a chicken wrapped in a burrito and I love that feeling. I’d never met a more stylish person ever in my life. Should I go with this or that outfit? If you are having trouble picking your clothes, call my mom. She buys me the most beautiful outfits ever. She probably will buy you good clothes, too.

That is why my mom is special to me. “Mom, if you’re out there, I just want you to know that I love you.”

A stronghold, my rock when situations became tough. She is my inspiration and the one who urges me to chase my dreams. Do you have a special mom? Well I do! My mom is special to me because she cares for me and loves my soul. She is the best mom a kid would ever dream of. My mom helps to make me strong. She helps me block away all of the rude things people say, and do. Whenever my heart cries she tells me to take deep breaths and I count to 100. Yes! I’m a straight A student because she encourages me to study for one hour, but some days I don’t want to hit the books.

My mom loves me by drying my tears and patching the holes in my heart. Her suggestions always lead in the right path. Mom listens to me with her ears open because she loves me. She knows that it makes me feel important.

Whether my mom helps me be strong or dries my sad tears, she is the best mom I will ever have. Thanks, Mom!

Hollister jacket that is so cozy. She also bought me a Lego organizer and it’s a big help! Zoom! Through the city she takes me places like school so I get knowledge in side of me. She takes me to eat so I don’t starve to death. Moms keep you warm and take you places.

My mother’s love for us children is unconditional. She is a great cook. Every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner were delicious meals made from scratch. She was a working woman. She never complained about all the work she had to do. Every day no matter how late, she always knelt down in prayer and made sure we prayed too. She went out of her way to help people both in cash and kindness. She always told me that when people treated me badly, to treat them well and pray for them. She taught me to share. She made time for everything and everyone. She always led by example.

She read my mind, even before I could ask for something, it was already provided for me. Both my parents sacrificed a lot so that my brother and I had the best of everything. I always took everything she did for granted, never thanked her. Our home was a peaceful place. My mother is the best.

Why my mom is special? My mom is special because she is nice, kind, sweet and works really hard to get things done. She also cooks great

food. My mom also used to volunteer at my school and my brother’s school as a librarian helper. She also comes to my school events too and helps out. My mom helps me at EVERY THING.

My mom changed my life by helping me and loving me. My mom is helpful because she assists me with my back stabbing home work. Then she cleans up my pig-like room (which has a layer of clothes under it). She also helps me fix my toys that I always break in a blink.

My mom is loving because she kisses me when I am under the twinkling night stars. My mom also feeds me mouth watering food like crunchy pieces of warm bacon.

So whether my mom is making food or working her heart out helping me with my home work, she is the best mom a 9 year old kid could have.

Not many moms would move across the country for their grandkids, but I’m so fortunate that my mother did. And even cooler is that she’s our next-door neighbor!

She’s always been there for me and growing up she instilled that value. Now that I’m a mom to four kids of my own (three boys with Autism and a baby girl), I really have to “be there” for my kids in a way that takes lots of patience and understanding. My mom was always involved in my activities and helped me pursue my interests. Because of her, I do the same things for

my children.

My mom pitches in to support my whole family as well. Sometimes, she plays chauffeur or chef. She changes diapers, plays with our three-year-old energetic son. She’s a jack-of-all-trades in the grandchildren department with five, ranging in age from 1-11! We’re so lucky to have her so close.

Happy Mother’s Day! Have you ever thought about why your mom is important to you? Well, I know I have! My mother is important to me because she is helpful and caring.

I think my mom is helpful because she makes my bed in the morning when I forget. She also helps me with my homework (we all have been there!) She also does her best for my family. For example, she got my brother a job and she made a doctor’s appointment for my dad when he was sick.

I also think my mother is caring. She tucks me into bed on stormy nights. The nicest thing I think she does is dry my tears when I am sad.

My mother is caring and helpful and those are two wonderful things about her. I love my mom, and I bet she will feel great on Mother’s Day. I hope yours feels the same way.

Lately, it seems that every doctor thinks he/she can prescribe bio-identical hormones. I saw a woman

recently in my office with a dangerously high level of testosterone after being given weekly injections of testosterone by another physician. Her level was over 500, while a normal young woman’s range of testosterone varies between 20-75. I explained to her that elevated testosterone in a woman can produce permanent physiologic changes

such as deepening of the voice, facial hair, baldness, and changes to the breasts and clitoris. Thankfully, she came to me after only three weeks of this terrible treatment. I have seen women who have elevated testosterone levels of around 100 without any obvious physical changes. Mentally, some increase in testosterone produces energy and self-confidence bordering on arrogance-which can be desirable in a depressed or shy individual (personal observation). But very high testosterone is not natural, not physiologic, and there are no studies about

the long-term deleterious effects. I remember another patient, about 45 years old, who admitted she had used injectable testosterone and synthetic male-like hormones as a young aspiring body builder. Other than a deep voice and muscular body, she had normal female appearance. She regretted her illegal use of hormones and only wanted to be correctly balanced, which I provided.

The most common error I see in men treated with testosterone is either too low or too high estradiol. Estradiol is the predominant female hormone. An enzyme, aromatase, chemically changes testosterone into estradiol to a small degree in young men. When men with very low testosterone are prescribed testosterone replacement, sometimes the testosterone changes to estradiol. However, most doctors use medications to block aromatase, which causes the transformation. Problems occur

when the estradiol is blocked too much or not at all. Elevated estradiol can produce permanent breast enlargement, moodiness, and weight gain. However, bone loss and memory problems may occur when the aromatase enzyme is blocked too much resulting in very low estradiol.

Blood levels must guide therapy in women and men. Failure to monitor prescribed hormones can be disastrous. Sex hormone replacement must be properly evaluated the same as thyroid or insulin hormones. I treat adults with age-related decline of hormones.

What do women want? While this may be a question that has stymied men for centuries, Irene Govea of Cosa Bella Boutique seems to have the answer – at least as far as fashion is concerned. The owner of the fashionable women’s apparel and accessories boutique is candid about her love for helping people find their personal style.

“I have always been into fashion,” Govea explained. “Making people look and feel beautiful is something that I truly enjoy.”

Every year, the Northside Independent School District honors individuals who are chosen as Educators of the

Year for the entire district. At the high school level, Brandeis math teacher Ben Hernandez was honored to be selected for the 2012-2013 school year.

Hernandez is a veteran teacher with five years of experience, four of which were at Brandeis High School. He has taught everything from Algebra 1 and 2 to Pre-AP Geometry, in addition to serving as the UIL math coach. Prior to pursuing a career in education, Hernandez originally selected a major in Computer Science. When he realized that he would rather teach math than work a desk job, he brought his computer skills to the classroom, offering innovative and interesting ways of presenting information to students.

“I often use my computer science background to program unique ways of illustrating the math,” explained Hernandez. “There is nothing better than having kids tell me that they used to hate math but now it is one of their favorite subjects.”

Even before he became a teacher, Hernandez often spent time working with students through his church youth group.

“I have always enjoyed having a positive impact on teenagers but I never thought it was going to be my job,” he said. “I am extremely lucky that I get paid to do what I do.”

The District Educators of the Year are chosen through a multiple-step process. First, each school selects their own Campus

Educator. At Brandeis, teachers are able to nominate a fellow educator, and a committee selects the teacher who will represent their school. A district-wide committee then selects the winners for all of NISD.

During the Educator of the Year ceremony in March, Hernandez was surprised and excited to hear his name called out as the Secondary Educator of the Year.

“My principal (Dr. Berger) told me it was the first time she had ever seen me speechless,” Hernandez recalled. “I was chosen to represent the incredible secondary teachers all across Northside who work hard every day to ensure they are doing an amazing job. I am honored!”

The honor is well deserved, as Hernandez

commits himself each day to helping students to succeed in their education. Through a liberal dose of humor and real life examples that are relevant to teenagers, he does his best to help his students make a connection with math.

“I put a lot of effort into caring for [my students] as individuals and as a result, they are much more likely to come for help before and after school if they need it,” said Hernandez of his teaching style. “All kids want to succeed.”

Congratulations to Ben Hernandez and his fellow Educators of the Year for their daily efforts to instill knowledge and a love for education in Northside students.

The Texas Legislature is currently engaged in an important debate about the requirements for graduation from

high school and every Texas citizen, teacher, parent and student ought to pay attention.

Under the current Texas plan, students are offered three “levels” of diploma called minimum, recommended and distinguished. The recommended and distinguished plans allow for limited flexibility and both require the “4x4” curriculum of four courses each in math, science, social studies and language arts. These two plans also mandate at least two years of a language other than English and a minimum of 26 credits in order to graduate.

What we have seen as students strive to meet these plans is that many cannot get it done in the regular school year without sacrificing courses in areas where they have a particular interest. There are many examples of this kind of student such as:

A musically talented student who wants to take marching band all four years of high school and be in the jazz band his/her junior and senior years likely does not have room in the schedule to meet the requirements of the recommended or distinguished diploma plan.

A student who wants to be an HVAC technician after high school as a way to pay for college likely cannot take enough career and technology course work to achieve a certification and still graduate under the recommended plan.

A student who is gifted in journalism and language arts and likely can be successful in a college program of this type, might struggle in mathematics and cannot complete four years of math including Algebra 2 and a course beyond Algebra 2.

It is a shame that these talented students are unable to fully pursue their interests. The rationale behind the creation of these plans was to increase “rigor.” Many leaders in both politics and business have pushed for Texas to have more strict graduation standards.

Interestingly, while we have used the word “rigor” to describe a general rise of standards, the actual definition includes the phrases, “the quality of being unyielding or inflexible” and “a condition that makes life difficult, challenging or uncomfortable.”

In other words, there is a fine line between raising standards for everyone and becoming inflexible to the point of harming students like those mentioned above.

The minimum graduation plan requires a parent, student and school official to agree that the other two plans cannot be met. We have students graduating in our state every year on the minimum plan after taking difficult courses and earning high grades. They simply were not interested in four courses in each core academic area. This plan also guarantees that the student cannot be granted admission to a four-year college or university in the state upon graduation.

The Texas House recently approved House Bill 5 by a margin of 145-2. As currently written, HB 5 would serve to

create a foundation diploma that all students would be expected to meet and offers several endorsements in areas such as business and industry; science, technology, engineering and math; public services; and the arts and humanities. The bill also allows a student to take and earn credit toward graduation for highly rigorous career and technology courses. The bill received widespread support among educators and several business groups that are experiencing a need for skilled labor as the Texas economy continues to grow and diversify.

However, despite all of the positives tied to the ideas in HB 5, there appears to be a battle brewing in the Texas Senate over these thoughts. Those who have and continue to argue for increased standards in the name of “rigor” are pushing back against the additional flexibility contained in the House bill.

It is interesting to me that some of the individuals and businesses who now argue for keeping the rigidity of the 4x4 curriculum for all students stood by silently as over $5 billion was cut from public education two years ago. These same people and groups now seem to have a keen interest in education in Texas.

Chief among those who say that HB 5 is a “step back from rigor” is the President of the Texas Association of Business, Bill Hammond. Mr. Hammond is a former legislator who evidently has the ear of some in state leadership and he regularly writes editorial pieces regarding public education.

Hammond wrote about this issue in the Express News on March 29 and bemoaned what he believes will be lost from the educational gains made in our state that are due, in his mind, to the 4x4 curriculum. Ironically, Mr. Hammond has spent much of his frequent newspaper space in the last few years telling anyone who will listen what a failure public education in Texas has become. Now that some flexibility might be offered to students and families in their high school course offerings, Hammond wants to point out the progress made in student

achievement. This strikes me as situational ethics at best and, more likely, outright hypocrisy.

There has been a lot of talk about “choice” regarding education in our state during this legislative session. The Senate now has the opportunity to provide choice to millions of students at little or no cost by allowing them to follow a sequence of courses that interests them. What we have come to see in our state with the 4x4 curriculum is indeed rigorous; however, it is rigor narrowly defined.

We often hear about the need for critical thinking in our schools and I could not agree more with this desire. I also know that all of us are much more likely to think critically and deeply about something we care about than a topic around which we see no relevance. I do not believe that students should be able to design their entire course plan – even in high school. There is clearly some essential knowledge that is important to an informed citizenry.

However, I also believe that a one-size-fits-all graduation plan is not in the best interest of our students or, ultimately, of our state.

Raising Standards Should Not Mean Becoming Inflexible



In Northside ISD, the wheels on the bus go round and round over 8.3 million miles every year, getting 65,000 students

(or 65 percent of the District’s 100,000 students) to and from school every day.

It’s the drivers of those buses – and their assistants – who make sure those students get to school safely and on time.

It’s not as easy as it seems, and their efforts were honored throughout Northside ISD during Bus Driver and Assistant Appreciation Week, the week of April 1 – April 5.

“They are the heart and soul of the Transportation Department,” Director of Transportation Rafael Salazar said. “We appreciate every single one of them every single day.”

Of the 1,000 Transportation Department employees, there are approximately 675 bus drivers and 225 bus assistants. The drivers are supported by a corps of mechanics, routers and office workers.

The District’s fleet of 830 buses is equipped with digital video surveillance systems to serve as an extra set of eyes. The systems were funded by voter-approved School Bond 2010.

Bus drivers are charged with a wide range of responsibilities and challenges, Salazar said. Elementary buses transport up to 71 students, and middle and high school buses can carry up to 58 students. Besides driving the bus and navigating traffic and road construction, bus drivers must also learn bus evacuation procedures, basic bus maintenance, monitor their students’

behavior and discipline them if necessary.Drivers have demonstrated their

commitment to student safety in significant ways. Anna Arguello received the Northside Citizenship Award in February for performing the Heimlich maneuver on a 7th grader from Luna Middle School that was choking on a piece of candy on her school bus. She was able to dislodge the candy, allowing the student to breathe again. Arguello made sure the student was checked by the school nurse, and both driver and student made it back to the bus and left school on time.

“It was an unbelievable feeling that I will never forget,” Arguello said. “It was scary but you take charge and do what’s right. I was operating on instinct and trying to save his life.”

Many of Northside ISD’s bus drivers say they were drawn to the job by the part-time hours and health insurance benefits, but they’ve stuck with it because they discover how much they like working with children. Many drivers are retired from the military or previous careers.

Bruce Bangle has been driving a special education bus since 1999. He came to NISD after a 28-year career in sales.

“I enjoy working with the special education students and they are why I’m still working. I try every day to make them feel comfortable and safe,” he said.

He recalls a special education student who never spoke on the bus, but after many months she finally told him “good morning.”

“It makes you feel good, like what you’re doing is worthwhile,” Bangle said. “The students can really make your day. If you

put a smile on their face, it comes right back to you.”

While rewarding, driving a school bus is not for everyone. The morning shift starts at 6 a.m. and lasts until 9 a.m. and the afternoon shift is 2 to 5 p.m. Some drivers pick up a mid-day shift to take home pre-k students or take students on a field trip. Many use the time in between to run errands, work another job, or socialize with fellow drivers.

All bus drivers receive extensive training to learn how to operate the bus, manage students and provide first aid. Bus driver mistakes are few and far between, but when they happen, they usually make the evening news.

The District’s Transportation Department is committed to the safety of the children, and to the community at large, Salazar said. In fact, Northside ISD was the first school district to begin buying propane-fueled buses to reduce the amount of pollutants and emissions released into the air.

The District’s fifth transportation station, McClung station, opened in August 2012 to serve the far northwest side of the district. The strategic locations of the stations reduce the amount of time students spend riding the bus each day.

But when students do spend time riding

the bus, they are greeted by friendly faces, like Bus Assistant Betty Avila. She came to NISD only a few months ago but says she’s quickly learned what it takes to be successful.

“Make sure you listen to the students,” Avila said. “You need compassion and patience. It’s not just a job.”
