Did you miss a Sunday and want to listen to a message? Is there a message that you would like
to hear again? All of Pastor Richard’s sermons are available on the church website at www.essexvillebaptist.com.
Messages can be put on CD for pickup as well. Contact the church office if you would like a copy.

It has been interesting to hear how many people have picked up on the little mantra that is circulating around EBCC. You know the one: If your are asked “how ya doin?”, I hope you would respond, “Can’t Complain!”
One of the blogs that I follow is written by Michael Hyatt. He has recently retired as CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing. One of his recent entries was about complaining. He writes about a friend that seemed to always complain about everyone. Here is part of Michael’s thoughts:
I realized how destructive complaining about others is. My friend didn’t make me think
less of the people he grumbled about; it made me think less of him.
Complaining about others has the potential to hurt you in four specific ways.
1. It trains your brain. I remember when I bought my first Lexus. I never really no-ticed Lexus cars before. But suddenly, they seemed to be everywhere. This demon-
strates the principle that you see more of what you notice. If you focus on people’s
faults, you will find even more of them.
1. It makes you miserable. My author friend was not happy. His humor was biting
and sarcastic. He seemed entitled and discontent. His attitude was highly toxic—which was why I felt the need to get away from him. He was contagious!
2. People pull away. One of the consequences of complaining is that healthy people
don’t want to hang around you. They avoid you. As a result, you miss scores of great opportunities, both social and business ones.
3. People don’t trust you. This is perhaps the saddest consequence of all. As my
friend was complaining about others, I began to wonder, What does he say about me when I am not around. I then instinctively thought, I don’t trust him.

Next month I will share some of his suggestions to reverse a negative and complaining
thought pattern. Until then, just keep reminding yourself, “can’t complain!”

Youth Group Nights Tuesdays May 8, and 22 Middle School and High School Students—come for a great time with friends and discover something new about God. The Youth Group meets on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm.
Bring your friends!
The theme for One Great Hour of Sharing continues to focus on the
ways “Sharing Brings Joy,” this year specifically on how “Sharing Brings Joy to Others.” Much of the time, our gifts bring joy to others
in tangible ways: A family displaced by natural disaster or political unrest is grateful
to receive food, shelter, and the comfort of a safe place to begin
to rebuild their lives.
A woman who has had to walk miles to carry potable water for
her family smiles as she draws water from a clean well near her home.
A child excitedly arrives for the first day of class at her village’s
new school.
When we “sow bountifully” by giving to others, we reap bountifully by sharing in the joy that our gifts bring to those whose basic needs are
met through the important work of all our partners in service.
This year as you share your tithes and offerings with One Great Hour
of Sharing, remember all the ways your gifts bring joy to others. Sow bountifully and share abundantly, knowing that you are not only help-
ing change the statistics, you are also helping change lives. Can we count on you to share your joy with others by using the envelope for the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering
included in this newsletter? We will be collecting this offering during the month of May.

Graduate Recognition Sunday, May 20
We would like to recognize any high school or college graduates on Sunday, May 20. Please contact the church office by May 13 with the names of any graduates. This will be a special time to recognize the achievements of each graduate, and present them with gifts from the church on May 20 during our regular worship service.
On Sunday, April 1st, it was like God opened the windows of heaven. The response to the special offering for the window fund was a true outpouring of the generosity that
Essexville Baptist Community Church is known for. The offering that day was $10,585. All gifts received to date total $42,590.
Phase 1 is ready to begin! All 54 main windows have been ordered through Elite, and TK Builders are ready to install them when they come in early in
May. The large triangle window in the rear of the sanctuary may be able to be included in this phase as well.
The gifts received are a tribute to your generosity. Hopefully everyone can find joy in
the results, and celebrate the reality of the new windows.
The realization is still there that there is yet another phase to be completed. The two
entryways are phase 2. They, too, can become reality as the funds become available to complete the whole project. Additional gifts will help make the replacement of the
entryways a reality as well.
Are you are looking for something fun to do this summer? Sign up for camp at either Camp Louise or Camp Lael.
If you are a member of EBCC, the church is offering you the full registration cost. If you are a friend or non-member of EBCC, the church is offering you half the registration cost. How can you beat that!
Contact Shirley Reid for camp registrations or registrations can be found in the office.

Church Council Highlights
Men’s Group Meets May12 & 26
Come join the men’s group that meets for Bible study, prayer, and accountability. We are using The Resolution for Men, inspired by the movie, Courageous, for a study guide. The group meets every 2nd and 4th Saturdays for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. at Krysiak House Restaurant. We are meeting on May 12 and May 26.
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Church Council was on Monday, April 16. Eighteen members were present.
Karen Osterhout reported that the Music and Worship Committee has selected Jane Kinnamon as Chair and Laura Traxler as Secretary.
The Window Project is on schedule. The windows have been ordered, with installation projected to begin around the first of May. The contributions to the Window Fund are over $42,000. The Trustees are looking at options to have the gable window included in this phase. Options for window treatments are still being considered.
Pastor shared that there is some interest in having the individual board meetings at separate times from the Council meeting. Some time is being given for everyone to think about this idea, and it will be considered at the next meeting.
Christian Ed - There are two children who are planning to go to camp, and will receive scholarships. Flowers will be given out for Mother’s Day. May 20 is the last day for Sunday school and also will be graduate recognition and thank you to our CE teachers.
Deacons - Ron Carey will be coming to preach on Sunday, April 29 while Pastor Richard is away.
Missions - There were over 35 Hope Totes filled for Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. The Ladies Night Out will be having a baby shower for Beacon of Hope Pregnancy Care Center on Tuesday, April 17. The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be received in May. A missions trip to Alaska is in the beginning planning stages for sometime dur-ing the summer of 2013.
Trustees - Jeanne will work Tuesday - Friday during the summer months. The cano-pies that were damaged by hail will be replaced when the window project is completed. Some bushes around the building will be removed before the window project, and the spring cleanup will be after the windows have been installed. Some of the sprinklers are going to be repaired.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Church Council is Monday, May 21.
