MAGAZINE Heathfield High School ISSUE 13 - 25 May 2012 AVAILABLE TO VIEW ONLINE: www.heathfield.leics.sch.uk YOUNG ENTERPRISE DAY On Tuesday 24th April some year 9’s took part in an Entrepreneurship Master class run by Young Enterprise and sponsored for our school by Caterpillar. The aim of the day’s events were to provide challenges for more able learners and to encourage and help develop independent learning. It also gave our students the opportunity to meet and work with people from various professions and, as part of a group, to put together a business plan and to present these plans to an interview panel. In the picture the teams are shown designing a 3D logo for their company, this had to reflect the value, or values, their company stands for. They soon discovered that ideas such as honesty and vision are not always easy to model using balloons! Whilst Earl Shilton was enjoying the snow that early February had thrown at us, twenty eight year 8’s and three members of staff had a fantastic time in the unusually sunny and warm mountains of North Wales. However, nobody was particularly bothered about the fact they had left the snow behind, as the activities on offer at Aberglaslyn Hall more than made up for this. Everyone got a go at climbing, gorge walking, kayaking and mountain walking, plus a lot more. Some of the kids even got to sleep outside one night as a brave Mr Andrews agreed to take them. Although the week was challenging for some, a brilliant time was had by all, and when the end of the week came around (far too quickly!) everyone was sad to leave. A massive thank you needs to be said to Ms Prime, Miss Staples and Mr Andrews for giving up their time to provide such a great experience. The trip is running again next February for any current year 7’s who think they’re up for the challenge! ABERGLASLYN 2012

We are making good progress towards becoming an Academy. Governors held an extra meeting at the beginning of May and agreed the drafts of the legal paperwork. This will now go to the Department for Education for their approval and Governors hope to sign the final agreement just after half term. If all goes ahead as planned Heathfield will officially become an academy on 1 July but we are planning to have an official launch some time later.Students, parents and staff will not notice any immediate change. The real difference will be that we will become independent of the Local Authority and have more say over how our own money is spent (we will have more to spend) and how the school is run. Some parents have asked about school uniform changing. There may eventually be small changes to the uniform but these will not come into effect yet. If there are any changes they will be introduced gradually and students will be able to wear any uniform purchased for the whole of their time at Heathfield.

PARENTGOVERNORS

There are two vacancies for parents on the Governing body of the school (or Academy when we convert). When we become an Academy it will be even more important to have a full complement of parent governors. The governors will be making decisions about how the school develops as an academy, making sure the academy is properly run and ensuring that money is being spent wisely. ANY parent can be a Governor, you do not need to have any particular skills or qualifications but you do need to care about the school being as good as it could possibly be and you do need to care about young people in our community.

If you would like to be a parent governor, or would just like more information please call the school office on 01455 842149 and either Graham Jones (Head) or Diane Buckingham (Clerk) will get back to you.

During my stay at the University of Leicester language summer school I enjoyed myself a lot throughout it. One of the things I enjoyed was the languages, we learnt Russian, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, these were most enjoyable due to the fact that I learnt a lot throughout the experience like how to greet someonein all of the languages. Next was the accommodation, it was exactly how it would have been if you were actually at the university itself. I thought this was a good experience for us due to the fact that if you were going to go to university its a good start. Moving on now to the activities in the afternoon, these I thought were good as you had the freedom to choose whatever you felt like doing - the only thing I thought was a disappointment was the dinners in the afternoon as it was either a fish dish or a vegetable lasagne so the only let down was that! Overall an amazing experience for all! George Rowley 9FT

During our stay at the University summer school of languages we enjoyed ourselves a lot. We learnt many different languages including Languages, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and more French.

We had mentors which we went round with in the day and did the activities with, which were mostly at the university so we went there on a coach everyday, we would have breaks through the different activities where we would have drinks and a snack. At lunch we would go to one of the many canteens that were located around campus where we would have £5 to spend each day their. After we would go back to the main room where we meet up and learnt all of the different languages. In the afternoons we have free time and some people played table tennis and others just socialised with people from different schools whilst we waited to have tea, which could be improved! Later at night we did different activities such as Football, Basketball and Zumba which were really fun! The accommodation was exactly what we expected it to be and what it would be like if we were at Uni, as we stayed in dorm’s which was a really good experience. On the whole it was a remarkable experience and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in languages. By Kelsey Vineham and Juliette Humphrys 9FT

University Experience Trip

Merci ! (Salle L2)

ENERGY DRINKSSome students have been bringing bottles of pop to school of 1litre and larger and many are bringing energy drinks. As well as helping your child to bring a healthy packed lunch we are asking that they do not bring these large bottles of pop or energy drinks to school. We do encourage them to drink plenty of fluids through the day but this should be water in lesson times and preferably water, squash or another suitable drinks for break and lunchtimes.

BEING HEALTHYBe cool,

don’t eat like a fool,eat your 5 a day,

don’t let your teeth decay,by eating your fruit, your staying cute,

eat your meat, don’t have smelly feet,

be clean,and eat your beans!

Poem by Becky Watson & Chloe Simpson 8JT

Two of our Year 8 students Abbie Howard and Sarah Chambers entered The Royal Diamond Jubilee Competition to cook for the Queen. They produced an interesting selection of savoury and sweet bite size treats. They enjoyed spending an hour on a Monday inventing their dishes.

NO NOTICE DETENTIONSFollowing the enactment of the 2011 Education Act there is no longer a requirement for schools to give parents notice of detentions. Our policy will be to continue to give notice of after school detentions in the first instance but not after a student has failed to turn up for a detention.

YEAR 9 LEADERSHIPAnnabel Stocks and Molly Jackson

This half term me and Molly went to Townlands on three occasions, all three of those occasions were very enjoyable and both of us are in agreement that the children and staff at Townlands are really nice people. The first time we went unfortunately the match was cancelled but we were offered the chance to help out at the training session where we introduced a new game. Despite the fact that we were there to help out we both had a lot of fun getting involved in the games with the children. During the two matches we refereed, that followed this, we watched the team display many outstanding qualities and great team spirit no matter what the outcome. We would like to say a special thanks to Mrs. Plumridge for inviting us back and also letting us have such an enjoyable experience.Annabel Stocks and Molly Jackson

....This is the feedback from a teacher, which two of our students received after taking a netball session in a local Primary school.

'Even though they were originally asked to umpire a match for us, they were very understanding that it had been rained off and when I asked them if they would like to stay for the practice they were very enthusiastic. At short notice, the girls organised and led a warm-up and taught us a new game, 'Cut the Cake', which really helped our netballers improve their speed and accuracy. During the game, they questioned the children about what skills they were developing and gave them pointers for development. They then set up a match and umpired it for us. The pupils really responded well to them and enjoyed the session very much. We would welcome them back anytime!'Well Done Annabel and Molly!

Pondy Peeps.......please help!!!

As you may or may not be aware we currently have a large group of pupils in school called the ‘Pondy Peeps’. They sponsor a girl in Pondicherry, India called Jeya Preya. Jeya is 15 years old and her birthday is 12 July. Jeya’s father is a ‘cooli’, working as a farm labourer on a daily wages basis. He supports the family of three children. The family live in a hut in a village approximately two hours bus ride from Pondicherry. To sponsor Jeya it costs £240 per year and pays for the following:

Tuition Fees (£140) • Boarding Fees (£42)Clothing (£10) • Personal Spending (£25)Text Books (£15) • Special Occasions (£8)

Over the past year the ‘Pondy Peeps’ have raised almost £600.

Both of these amounts combined paid for Jeya’s sponsor money last year, 2 classrooms being refurbished, and £20 for Jeya and her family.

Nikki Ashworth (Cover Supervisor) also did a sponsored parachute jump and raised £1039.71 (including donations from some Primary Schools). We now need to raise more money for Jeya (£240) and another £500 to refurbish another classroom..

The ‘Pondy Peeps would like to have a ‘Jumble Sale’ on 07 July. To do this we need your help! If you have any items (clothes, shoes, bags, ornaments or anything in a sellable condition) that you no longer require you could donate them to us. To do this just drop them into reception marked for the attention of the Pondy Peeps.

If you would like to know more information about Jeya and the work we support in India please contact Kirsty Hackett on 01455 842149.

If you would like to do any of the following please also contact Kirsty:

• Help us to raise more money

• Make a donation

• Help out with our jumble sale / fun day

• If you would like to buy a stall for the day

I can make a difference!

You can make a difference!

We can all make a difference!

This is Jeya….

HEATHFIELD PUPILS IN GRAFFITI MODE!Miss Wolohan has been creating links with the George Ward Centre since Christmas, and as part of this has been taking 3 pupils to do some graffiti boards down there. Bradley Armstrong (9GH), Sam Dilkes (9MR) and Jamie Gregory (8PH) and great artists and have taken on this new challenge well. Bradley has been the main designer of the boards, which have the initials GWC for the George Ward Centre on them, a child’s board, featuring Humpty Dumpty as the area the boards are in has nursery age children playing in it, and the last board has the artists initials … and of course the Heathfield badge! The plan is to complete another 3 boards, with current events for 2012 on it. Designs have been done to show the Jubilee and the Olympics. The boards are at the back of the George Ward centre! Why not take a look!
