The Magazine for Cowboys and Kids

Greetings,Are we ever going to get back to

good ole Iowa weather? We should have come close to freezing to death this winter, that didn’t happen, and I am ok with that. We start into spring and we have hundreds of tornados and that should be enough to last all sum-mer, and I have had enough of them. I know that there are lots of people want-ing rain, but 5.5 inches in just a few

minutes isn’t my idea of rain, and my basement sure didn’t like that much that quick! Thanks to my kids for helping Dixie with the clean up.

I sure had a neat dining experience a week or so ago. I was in the great state of Nebraska making a few herd visits along with my annual trip to Tom Sonderup’s sale. I met up with Colt Keffer, Charolais Journal rep for this area, in the motel and we landed in “The Husker House” in downtown Columbus, Nebraska. This seemed like a night to shake up my usual dining menu. Instead of a salad, I decided to try their Philadelphia cheese steak soup. Most of you know my explanation of cheese and it isn’t good, but the rest of that name sounded great (Philly Steak Soup). Just let me tell you, this soup was deadly. I can’t say enough nice things about the soup and when I get back to Columbus I may just make a meal of it. That’s good soup for me to say I will make a meal of it.

Then, I really went out on a limb from my usual ribeye, I ordered an 8oz bacon wrapped filet and for a side, I ordered pasta, another unheard of in my books. I have eaten at the Husker House several times and they never cease to amaze me, it’s always great. This filet was no excep-tion. Grilled to perfection, seasoned excellent for my taste buds, and the pasta; well, it was as good as pasta could be and a pinch better.

In my experiences at “The Husker House,” I have never had a bad waitress. This trip was no exception. Lindy was our waitress and a great one she was. Our meal was great and she made sure that we had the adult beverages that we needed. If in Columbus, Nebraska, make The Husker House a meal stop, you won’t be disap-pointed!!!

Disaster hit close to home. We all listen to the weather and news and think boy that will never happen here. Well, twenty miles south of us in Creston, Iowa, a tornado hit the hospital and Southwestern Community College. My kids were all born in that hos-pital and I was a graduate of that college. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the folks that are involved in this disaster. Thanks go out to Creston Radio for keep-ing us updated. Chad, Tucker depends on you to keep him and our family safe.

As always, thank a Veteran for your freedom, and keep our service folks and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

How do the VITA HAIR™ Nourishing Vitamins work? Biotin vitamin is the first vitamin thought of when considering HAIR GROWTH. The

major benefit of Biotin is its ability to strengthen both the hair follicle and the hair shaft, where the hair is produced, which prevents hair breakage and dryness. This is a scientifically proven crucial step in the natural hair growing process. One of the chiefthings that slows hair growth is damaged hair. Biotin enriched hair has increased elasticity of the cortex which prevents breakage. This enables healthy, FASTER HAIRGROWTH. Biotin also thickens the actual hair cuticle providing a fuller appearance.

Pro-Vitamin B-5 is considered the king of all HAIR CARE vitamins. Pro-Vitamin B-5stimulates healthy scalp circulation which leads to improved hair health. It coats the hairand seals its surface, lubricating the hair shaft making the hair shine. It possesses superior long term moisturizing properties because of its unique ability to penetrate andnourish the hair shaft.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that stimulates circulation to the skin and supports capillary growth. The skin needs to have proper circulation in order to keep the hair follicles alive and thriving. When there are more capillaries, the circulation improvesleading to increased nutrient absorption into the hair follicles, which speeds hair growth.

VITA HAIR™ is an advanced nutrient package that infuses the hair with proven hair vitamins for ...• Faster Hair Growth • Thicker Hair • Increased Shine

• More Body & Volume • Healthier Skin • Improved Nutrient Absorption

• More Body & Volume • Healthier Skin • Improved Nutrient Absorption

grow, feed, stay sound? Have attitude, hair, and overall package? As we all know, that it is difficult to judge a herd sire from his picture alone, and reputation is really what makes a bull a household name for years to come.

Doing your homework at the fairs may give you a little direction when you are out on the hunt for your next project. Pay close attention and even take notes when you are watching the shows; who are the heifers and the steers that are filtering to the top, out of, and also equally as important, who has not finished the race quite as well? Something to keep in mind is the type of home that these cattle are in. Some programs may be worked a lot harder than others. The more time you spend researching your project for the year ahead, it will help you predict how the outcome may be.

Another great reason for paying close attention to how the cattle out of these bulls have turned out, is that you might have an idea of what you want to breed your heifers, and cows to in the future. This will have an effect on the cattle industry for years to come. If the same cattle out of one bull tend to have the same problem, such as too straight in their back legs, then you may conclude that this is a trait that this bull throws. This is the reason we feel it is so important to make sure that the judge that is standing in the center of the ring is qualified to direct the industry.

To gain all of this knowledge, you have to be willing to take the time to visit with people and soak up the knowledge of the experiences they have had. We also recommend visiting the stud stations and judging the bulls in person. We feel that people are losing out on a lot of information by not taking the time to visit with the more experienced and successful industry leaders. So much can be learned outside of the classroom, TV, and magazines.

Our Pastor at our church a couple of weeks ago posed the question, if you were to doing something, anything willingly, without getting paid to do it, what would it be? Ask the people in your family and see what their answers may be. It is even fun to predict what they may say and see if you are right. Whatever their answer is, is what they are passionate about. It is what they enjoy and what they would make time for, if at all possible. God has instilled these interests in us. If we all had the same interests, then everybody would be doing the same thing. Whatever you are passionate about, you want to learn more about and get better at. God has made us all different and I am glad the He gave me and my family the love for cattle.

The big question for our youth is, what are you truly passionate about? In order for our youth to find their true passion, you sometimes, as parents, have to be patient and come out of your own comfort zone.

The 4H program is an excellent program for the youth to explore so many different opportunities. They can explore, and learn more about anything that interests them. Encourage them to explore different avenues on interest. It may even challenge you to learn more about certain things. Challenge them to do their best and not to pass the job off onto someone else. Be supportive and help them to find what their passion is. I think the best way of doing this, is to find someone who does what they are inter-ested in and allow the youth to observe what makes that person successful at what they do. Encourage them to ask questions and assist where they can. When I was starting 4H, our vet, or the neighbor would come over to clip my calves. There is no doubt in my mind that they probably thought I was a very inquisitive kid. (LOL more like a pain) They were, however, very patient and really taught me a lot. I am so thankful for that!

God Bless and have fun at the FAIRS!

Do Your Homework at the Fairs for Your Next Project

and Breeding ProgramWhen I was planning to write this article, I realized that it applied to

much more than just showing livestock. We all know how busy the fairs can be, but it is a perfect opportunity to get some ideas for projects that you may be interested in for the next upcoming show year. What I want to focus on in this article is mainly showing livestock and preparing our 4H’ers to think deeper.

School is almost out and if your family is like ours, they are ready for summer to begin. While other children look forward to sleeping in and spending the rest of the day playing video games, kids that show cattle can’t wait to get up, rinse, feed, and spend their time get-ting ready for the next show. The amount of time that they spend with their own cattle, doing their own work, will be so rewarding. It will pay off when they hit the ring and they are in harmony with the animal that they have been spending countless hours with.

Spring is always an exciting time for cattle producers, at least in our part of the country. The new calf crop has hit the ground and everyone wants to know which bulls have made a hit or a miss. This will predict which bulls people will AI to in the upcoming year. Something that all of us also keep in the back of our mind is, how are these new herd sire’s calves going to look in a year and a half from now? Are they going to

NATURAL STRIDE - Without question in the show ring todaysoundness is a necessity and with the advancements in genetics andperformance we have stressed the structure of livestock to the limits. As we continue to push the show animal of today to its highestpotential we will also see more and more movement problems.Whether it’s swelling, flexibility, joint pain or just wear and tear,Natural Stride is your answer. This revolutionary, one-of-a-kind,ALL NATURAL formula has led to dramatic results in todays showanimal. Natural Stride benefits the joint in 4 ways ...

• First, it helps modulate or “calm down” the body’s immuneresponse to joint stress - enhancing joint recovery and minimiz-ing damage from pain and activity.

• Second, cetyl myristoleate may act as an anti-inflammatory,helping to reduce the symptoms of “inflammatory arthritis”and other conditions in which inflammation can lead to slowrecovery, damaged tissues, increased pain and restricted motion.

• Third, cetyl myristoleate can stimulate joint lubrication to helprelieve stiffness, which may improve mobility and enhance thenatural range of motion.

• Finally, cetyl myristoleate has had an analgesic or “pain-killing”effect that may help to reduce joint pain, hence increasing youranimal’s comfort.

HIDE AND HAIR is the revolutionary new hair growth product fromNatural Solutions For Livestock. Not only has it been shown to grow hair butit encourages skin health which is essential for optimum hair growth. HIDEAND HAIR contains kelp and seaweed which has been shown to lower bodytemperature. Cattle will potentially take the higher or hotter temperature betterwhen going to a show. This new product comes in granulated form, is extremelypalatable, and best of all it contains no melatonin. HIDE AND HAIR is the first ofits kind designed to be administered 60-90 days before show.A bucket of HIDE AND HAIR will last 45 days per head. Hair runs in 45 day cycles soyou could start seeing results in as little as 45 days. This is a great tool to help with your suc-cess, but always remember daily hair care and management play an important roll as well. HIDEAND HAIR has no melatonin so you can not use it too long. With melatonin, there is a point where haircomes to a peak, then hair goes down hill and is hard to recover. With HIDE AND HAIR you are able toplan multiple peaks with a more consistent hair growth over a longer period of time without the valley. It isalso great for skin and hair health, so you can administer it for a longer period of time and not be a negative.

GLUCoat is a unique product that can be used to replace any oil or fat that you mightbe using. When a calf is behind in weight, not eating good, not fat enough, etc. thefirst thing a person does or thinks of is to “ADD FAT ” Studies show that feed intakeand feed efficiency go down when a feed reaches 6% or more in fat content. So put-ting fat or oils into a show feed will normally sail over that 6% mark. In return, youare defeating the purpose of adding fat and may have a negative effect on weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency. When too much oil or fat is used, it will coat therumen and the feed particles in the rumen which will slow down the digestion of thenutrients. GLUCoat is different ...

• GLUCoat is not a fat product.• GLUCoat is a sugar product. The unique blend of sugars keeps the rumen work-

ing longer and faster than just a single source of glucose such as cane molasses. Byspeeding up rumen activity comes increased feed intake and palatability. It has beenshown to dramatically enhance fat cover, increase feed efficiency and average dailygain.

• GLUCoat also has the Cellarator technology as it contains the active ingredientCell-rate, which aids in the process of cellular replication, supports the animal’simmune system, lowers stress levels, and aids in muscle and fat development.

• GLUCoat has a refined flavored fish oil that contains the highest levels of Omega3 Fatty Acids for joint health and naturally occurring Vitamin E which is great for skinand hair.

• GLUCoat can also increase glucose levels which is stored in the body as fat, giv-ing livestock that bloomier, fuller, softer look that is demanded in the show ring today.

• GLUCoat is molasses based and sweet to the taste, cattle love it!GLUCoat is the most widely used feed additive on the market today. It’s thenext level or generation to a fat source or supplement. You will never usea fat product again! Whether it’s market steers or breeding cattleyour calf will feel better, act better and their eating habits willchange. GLUCoat WILL KEEP YOU READY FOR THERING!!

FYI

Growing Interest in Feed Efficiency

by John Maday, Managing Editor, Drovers CattleNetwork

Would you pay more for a feed-efficient bull? Ranchers around the country face that question as they attend bull sales, and for increas-ing numbers, it appears the answer is “yes.” Speaking to the Bovine Committee at last week’s National Institute for Animal Agriculture annual conference, University of Idaho animal scientist Rod Hill, PhD, provided background on feed efficiency and its role in cattle market-ing.

Hill notes that feed represents the largest share of production costs for beef cattle, and 70 percent of the total cost of feed in beef produc-tion is carried by the cow-calf sector. Grain-based ethanol has helped drive feed costs up in recent years, and while Hill considers that technology unsustainable, a shift toward cellulosic ethanol will have similar effects as land currently in forage production moves to energy production. So with high feed costs a reality for the foreseeable future, identifying animals that eat less of it while producing the same or more beef becomes increasingly attractive.

Scientists and producers use several measures of feed efficiency in cattle. These include the feed-per-gain ratio, which simply shows how many pounds of feed an animal eats for each pound of gain. Another measure is residual feed intake (RFI), which compares an animal’s actual intake with predicted intake based on its size and growth rate. A low RFI rating means an animal consumes less feed than predicted. Hill says research has shown wide variations in RFI among similar groups of cattle. Two similar feedyard steers, for example, might have the same average daily gain of about four pounds per day, but one might produce those gains on 20 percent less feed.

For a good comparison of the terminology and measurement of feed

efficiency, read “Improving efficiency starts with understanding the measures” by Kansas State University beef Extension specialist Bob Weaber, PhD.

Increasingly, seedstock producers and bull-test facilities use facili-ties designed to measure individual feed intake on young bulls to measure their feed efficiency, as the trait is heritable. And considerable work is underway to identify and validate genomic markers for the trait. But as bulls come to market with ratings for efficiency included in their EPDs or selection indexes, do buyers see a value?

Hill and a group of researchers have surveyed large groups of cow-calf and seedstock producers over the past four years to evalu-ate their awareness of, and interest in, measures of feed efficiency in genetic selection. In their 2008 study, only 3.8 and 4.8 percent of commercial and seedstock producers indicated that feed efficiency was the most important characteristic used for bull selection. For most in both groups, calving ease was the most important trait used to evaluate genetic merit of breeding bulls. However, 49.1 percent of commercial producers and 43.6 percent of seedstock producers indicated they were willing to adopt RFI as a measure of feed efficiency. Asked how much extra they would pay for bulls with favorable ratings for RFI, 28 per-cent indicated they would not pay any extra, 51 percent indicated they would pay from $1 to $100, and the percentage of buyers who would pay larger premiums dropped off sharply.

The researchers conducted a follow-up survey in 2011 and found some change in attitudes toward the trait. Asked whether bulls are worth more if measured and rated favorably for feed efficiency, 76 percent responded yes, 16 percent said no, and 8 percent indicated they did not know. Asked about their willingness to pay for feed-efficient bulls, 18 percent said they would not pay any more, 45 percent said they would pay 1 to 10 percent more, 19.5 percent said they would pay 11 to 25 percent more and 4 percent said they would pay 26 percent or more.

ICA Members Spend Day Advocating Cattle and

Beef IssuesAMES, IOWA – Members of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association provided

food for thought and ribeye steak sandwiches at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines on April 10. Approximately 30 members of the ICA board of directors met at the Capitol for their April meeting, and took the opportu-nity to hear from several legislators, as well as make their own one-on-one contacts with their House and Senate district representatives.

ICA also served more than 650 ribeye steak sandwiches to legislators, their staffs, and other state employees, including Governor Terry Branstad, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, and Bill Ehm, the administrator for

Environmental Protection Division of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Johnson County Cattlemen members Norm Ziskovsky, Swisher, and Keever Swenka, Solon, provided the grill and grilling services.

To end the day’s meeting, most of the ICA board members trav-eled to Iowa State University in Ames where they partici-pated in an educa-tional event about lean, finely textured beef. The event was organized by the Block and Bridle Club, and included speakers from the meat science department, American Meat Institute, and Iowa Beef Industry Council. n

Flushing Heifers?By Toby Muller

It has been a gorgeous spring and I think we can finally exhale and write off winter as being over even though it barely started for most of us. Our last two weekends have been filled with three Easters, Jaxson’s baptism and two birthday parties for Dawson (family and friend). This means there have been a lot of two things for me: B.S. and good food. The B.S. doesn’t seem to hurt me much but it seems that lately the food is taking its toll. I think it finally sunk in when my beautiful bride blamed me for single-handedly polishing off all the Easter candy and then pointed out that it isn’t sympathy weight anymore because she’s no longer pregnant. I really don’t mind over-indulging a couple of days at family gatherings, but that darn candy dish really irri-tates me. I really haven’t ever been a candy lover. I mean, I like it but I don’t go out of my way to get it, and I guess having that pile of candy under my nose is just too tempting.

I kind of think of flushing heifers in the same way. Whether it’s a great show heifer or a purebred that has the pedigree of a rock star, she’s just sitting there right under your nose, waiting

to do something productive in her life. In some ways, it seems very tempting to try and gain instant satisfaction by speeding up that heifer’s reproductive career, but first I think you need to ask yourself a couple questions. First, is she good enough to flush? I know she has some great qualities, but will she pass them on to her offspring and will she make a good mother herself? Sec-ondly, if she really is that good with no actual track record her-self- do you want to take the increased risk of compromising her long-term fertility? For some heifers, the answer may very well be, “yes”. Regardless, I think everyone should go in knowing the average number of embryos produced by a heifer versus a mature cow is significantly lower. If you figure in the fact that after flushing, many heifers have trouble producing embryos or even breeding down the road makes the decision even easier for me.

I understand the logic behind flushing heifers, and for your program, it may have its place. It definitely can speed up genetic change when it works but there seems to be a lot of risk/reward to consider. I think our goal should be not only to make genetic im-provement as fast as possible, but also as efficiently as possible. After all, my bottom line depends on yours, and often times the temptations don’t live up to expectations. -Toby n

COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

by Evan Rayl

JBS’s Argentine subsidiary, Swift, has closed 5 of its six slaughter-houses in Argentina. The one remaining plant, in Rosario, is the com-pany's largest in Argentina and is a meat- processing plant as well. JBS CEO, Wesley Batista said, in a press conference, the companyhas been leaving Argentina over time. Argentina now represents less than one per-cent of JBS’s total world revenue, he also said. Argentina has been chal-lenging because of government restrictions on exports and large salary increases associated with high inflation. Even closing plants down has costs, giving severance payments required for laid off workers. At the present time, JBS is going to sit tight with one packing plant and process-ing plant with the hope it can still break even in Argentina.

A man on the airplane looks down at the ground and dreams of home.

Northern Beef Packers facility in Aberdeen, SD plans to open this spring. The 420,000 square foot plant will initially process about 200 cattle per day and eventually ramp up to 1500 per day with cattle com-ing from the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. The plant will start with 200 employees and would employ 650 in full operation. Plans for the plant got a boost from the sale of $8.5 million in local tax incre-ment financing bonds. In addition, the company is 41 percent owned by businessman Oshik Song along with 69 other Korean investors who each gave at least $500,000 under the federal EB-5 program. The program encourages foreign investment in exchange for permanent residency sta-tus. Northern Beef Packers plans to produce both USDA certified meat cuts and offal for foreign markets. An on-site rendering plant is expected to open later.

If God had really intended men to fly, he’d make it easier to get to the airport.

Sholom Rubashkin, former CEO with Agriprocessors Inc. has appealed his conviction and 27 year prison sentence for bank fraud to the U. S. Supreme Court. His defense team has filed a petition which essentially requests that the Supreme Court judges review a appeal by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis. He is asking that the judge in the original case should have recused herself, alleging that she was too involved in the planning of the May 2008 raid by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be impartial. He also says his 27 year prison sentence is excessive. Rubashkin’s case comes from the 2008 raid, where 389 illegal immigrants employed by the company were arrested. Other employees were not arrested, but never returned to work and Agriprocessors filed for bankruptcy later that year.

A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.

Connecticut-based Geissler’s Supermarkets are testing a temperature and time-sensitive label on its chilled packaged beef in a pilot program

with German manufacturer BASF. The label changes color to indicate when a product is no longer safe to eat. Both time and warmer tempera-tures will change color of the label. This product is already being used in several countries by multiple companies.

Response from customers has been very good. It is easier to check the label, than to check the product. The plan is to start with meat products in the beginning and gradually expand use of the label to other products. To start with, the label will be dark blue, but over time or warmer tempera-tures, it will turn gray and fade away.

Did you ever notice that the first piece of luggage on the carouselnever belongs to anyone?

This has been one unusual winter. Very little moisture and very few cold days. The mild winter that we had was basically just February. Lots of places, the ground hardly froze. The worst part is so little soil moisture in so many areas. Areas of at least moderate drought include: Minnesota and northwest Iowa, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Western Oklahoma, Texas, southeast Colorado, southwest Kansas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Looks to be about one third of the entire USA is in at least the moderate drought area. Terrible way to start the summer. By the way, subsoil moisture is at only 47 percent of normal in Iowa right now. Last year at this time, it was at 83 percent of normal.

The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway.

“Pink Slime” is the latest scare to hurt the beef business. This product is simply beef trimmings separated from fat that is added to ground beef. It does nothing to reduce beef quality, but cheapens the cost of hamburger for lower income families. Seems every few years, beef has to endure “bad publicity” from the liberal press. These unknowledgeable folks think beef quality is the reason for lower beef consumption, but seem to know nothing about drought that has severely reduced herds. Here’s a news flash for city newspaper reporters, when it doesn’t rain, the grass doesn’t grow, and beef herds must be culled. Drought has reduced beef cattle numbers to the lowest level since 1952! Thus the highest prices ever are in place right now.

No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes homeand rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.

Twenty seven hundred cattle are reported to have died on board a Brazilian live export ship in what the shipper, Animals Australia says is one of the worst shipboard disasters the live export industry has seen in many years. Animals Australia’s campaign director, Lyn White, said the ship is anchored at sea after being refused port in a number of countries, including Egypt, where the cattle were supposed to be offloaded. Animals Australia had been working with international colleague groups to find refuge for the surviving 2,000 cattle after Egyptian authorities refused to allow the animals to be unloaded. It’s understood that ventilation problems on the recently converted livestock vessel, the MV Garcia Del Mar, caused the deaths of more than half of the animals on board since the ship left South America for Egypt a few weeks ago The ship has been anchored in the Red Sea for over a week. Considered an animal welfare disaster, with the concern about the remaining cattle dying at sea, a plea has been sent to authorities in Egypt to offload the remaining cattle at Al Sohkna, as was originally intended.

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go.I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.

Recently matching bills were introduced in the U. S. Senate (S.2242) and U. S. House of Representatives (H.R. 1259) to repeal the estate tax on small businessmen and farmers. With the increased evaluation of farms and businesses and increased expenses and the cost of living moving up to match farm and business evaluations, farmers and businessman will revert to paying estate taxes at the one million dollar level beginning at the end of this year. At the one million dollar level farms as small as 200 acres could be subject to the tax. Unless Congress acts to provide permanent relief, the estate tax will revert back to pre-2001 levels where estates worth more than $1 million are taxed at 55 per cent. The Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act would completely stop the federal government from con-sidering death as a taxable event.n

Kassidy and Klayton, loving life on the farm! Photo submitted by Mom, Jennifer Carrico.

As many of you know, I work part time at the Iowa State Capitol for Representative Steve Olson. I was pleasantly surprised when finishing up a debate on the House Floor when we could smell the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association grilling ribeye sandwiches outside the Capitol. It was kind of funny because at about the same time, Representative Annette Sweeney and I

looked at each other and she leaned over and whispered, “Can you smell the beef?” I think they said they ended up serving over 650 State Employees. I know that I couldn’t pass up a ribeye sandwich! Thank you ICA! Great sandwich and a great way to get everyone thinking about our beef industry!

So, as Dad mentioned, we had some crazy weather in Southwest Iowa the other day! We have some funny stories from running to the basement, Tucker’s obsession with Creston Radio and even trying to round up my livestock (cats). My friends, Nicole Rathbun and Kyrstee Jameson, happened to get stuck at our house during the craziness. Well, I have to thank them for saving me! After the second round of storms that created a ton of damage just south of us, in Creston, we ended up with almost five inches of rain in a half hour. My basement was seeping with water! With that and all the other things that needed to be done, I completely froze. I didn’t know what to do or where to start! Nicole stepped in and told me, “Just go upstairs! Don’t worry, I’ve got this!” She wasn’t kidding! She and Kyrstee started sweeping water to the drain and sopping up water with towels and rugs. I had to call my brother to bring us a wet vac and Mike Ehrsam even stopped to be sure we were okay. I could never say that I am not completely blessed to have wonderful friends and family that surround me always. Nicole and Kyrstee worked for hours trying to stay ahead of the water and I could never thank them enough!!! They let me get supper, put the kids to bed and bake carmel brownies. The baking was therapeu-tic, being the only thing I could control!! THANK YOU, GIRLS!!!

This is the May issue and I want to say to all of the mothers out there that work so hard every day, trying to give their children what they need to be good, kind and upstanding citizens, have a very blessed Mother’s Day! Also, best of luck to all of the graduates that are beginning a new and exciting chapter in their lives!

Thank you to all of the military past and present! May God bless our country each and every day.
