Talented middle and high school students across Maryland, Delaware and Virginia are invited to participate in this year’s Maryland Summer Center for the Arts at Salisbury University. Every year over 100 aspiring artists live on SU’s campus and perform intensive study in their discipline. The program encourages young artists to expand their techniques while exploring unique artistic visions and diverse world-views through interactions with the program’s professional staff and visiting artists.

good humored seeker of amazing treasures “from out there in the great world of stuff,”out of the box gardener, a giving samaritian working with the little Sisters of Jesus & Mary, Art Teacher for inmates at Wicomico Detention Center, animal lover, pingpong powerhouse and free spirit.

May breaks a record for the longest “great things to do” calendar ever! Traditionally it is our “seniors issue”- but the many wonderful things for graduating seniors, over 50 seniors and everyone else has pushed our article space to the minimum. Perhaps that is the best content after all, getting out and filling our lives with new experiences is the stuff that keeps one young. Whether you are 17 or 57+, how you choose to fill your day and with what attitude will dictate the level of personal fufillment and joy those hours will yield. Certainly my concept of “old” has changed. I have always felt a part of me is stuck at age 12, or at least somewhere far younger than the almost 52 (eek!) I will turn on my next birthday. I must confess that I have stopped riding grocery carts enroute to the car, but mainly because of flipping one in the rain-soaked Home Depot parking lot and the very pained expression on my daughter’s face. The similarities between a graduating senior and those of us post work-(when ever that will happen...) offers some interesting parallels; we need to fill our time in a productive manner and quite often our resources may be cut. The economy has kept a large number of potentially retired folks at work or in part-time jobs that they may have held at the beginning of their careers. But there is a silver lining, “the machine that is run, starts easier.” The question of healthcare and lodging might be looked at with a youthful eye. Keeping your body in shape and your mind challenged is top preventative medicine. And here is an idea directly from my college days... if your home becomes too much to keep, or you need to cut your expenses and “senior housing” feels limiting or too expensive- why not get a few of your dear friends together to live in a “group” house. (I may like to do a future article on this notion- so please contact me with your thoughts.) So pluck up a pen and circle the things you’d like to enjoy doing this month. sieze the day! Dana Simson

generations of eager students and many community celebrations.In the humble village of Upper Fairmount, two simple wood build-ings have marked the center of the community, bringing folks together from the surrounding farms and waterman’s harbors. In 1974,Don McLelland, owner of School House Farm- across the road from the Academy) and Smithsonian Institution curator, invited several neighbor couples over for dinner and a planning session on how they might work together to revitalize the old school buildings. In the early days, Saturday night dances and a plucky quilting circle brought the diverse community of come-heres, locals and weekenders together. Over the years the buildings have been restored housing a museum and period classrooms. Two wonder-ful yearly celebrations, a C hristmas community dinner, with caroling and a visit from Santa and the upcoming 1800’s Day Festival are delightful!

36th 1800’s Day Festival is a nostalgic day of old fashioned square dancing, a spelling bee, local crafts & homemade preserves. What do Purple Coneflowers, Blue-eyed Grass, Hardy Hibiscus, Highbush Blueberry, and River Birch have in common? They’re all native species, mean-ing they are found naturally in our area. Because native plants are rooted (pun intended) in our region, they’re well-adapted to local climate and soils, which makes them hardier and easier to grow than non-native, or exotic, species. Not only that, but because they are so well adapted to our regional environment, na-tive species are often drought tolerant, resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits, and attractive to local wildlife such as butterflies, hummingbirds, songbirds, and pollinators that rely on these plants for food and shelter. I battled this garden and won! It was a mixed garden; bulbs, vegetables, the odd flower, weeds, and the weeds were winning. It was the first lovely day in April. You must remember! We were all down on our knees worshiping the SUN. ...I stayed home to “work on the Calendar Guide” and well... dug this whole sucker up instead. My new garden strategy is to divide and conquer- in neat little regimented plots heavily mulched and nice marching rows of happy seedlings....but NO! There are unnamed others determined to trench my lovely garden into burial berms for well, their stuff. Here are my countermeasures- scatter your tomato cages to protect the tiny plants from paws and use paw annoying spikey wood mulch. As the plants get established the pets go elsewhere. (so to speak)

GAME on “Geocaching” (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.

A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS tech-nology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a

GPS device can then try to locate the geocache.” (Geocaching.com)

On June 11th, 2011 Wicomico County, Maryland

will hold its first annual Geocache Dash!First, a cacher goes online to www.geocaching.com to obtain the coordinates to

a cache he or she would like to find. The cacher puts these coordinates into his or her GPS, and heads out to the location. Caches come in a variety of containers, from military ammo boxes to capsules barely larger than a pencil eraser, and it helps if you’ve seen a few so you know what you’re looking for. Caches are well hidden and disguised so people who aren’t cachers (or “muggles”, as the caching community commonly refers to them) are less likely to see them. When a person finds a cache, they sign the logbook and also log it on their online account. Some of the larger caches include trinkets that can be taken, but only if you replace them with other items. After a cacher has signed the log and perused the stash, they close the cache tightly and put it back exactly as they found it for the next cacher to find! About 25-30 new caches will be added to Wicomico County and posted to www.geocaching.com and www.wicomicotourism.org the morning of the event. Attendees will spend the day searching for the new caches, finding as many as they can! After a fun day of caching they will meet up for a party at the end of the day with entertainment, food, and door prizes. Geocaching is fun for people of all ages. It is a great way to get outside, enjoy nature and get some low-impact exercise! Wicomico County is the perfect area for geocaching. From the easily accessible urban caches in the City of Salisbury, to the beautiful nature surrounded caches in the rural areas of the county, there is something for everyone. With over 100 geocaches in the county, visitors could certainly turn this one day event into a caching weekend, and really experience what Delmarva has to offer.Tourism Manager, Sandy Fulton says, “We are hoping for it to turn into a Mega-Event, which is an event that attracts more than five hundred people.” As always, our goal is to attract people to the area to stay overnight, eat in our local restaurants and shop in our unique storefronts. Often we believe that we have communicated our message very well; however there are many variables of why our message doesn’t come across clearly to the other party. First, COMMUNICATION is primary if you want to engage the family member. You will have to LISTEN. Listening is the most valued skill in positive communication. Most of us do not know how to LISTEN. This really means to give your full attention to the other person (no cell phones, T.V. music, etc). You can ask questions for clarification, but do not interject or interrupt. When it is your turn to talk use I STATEMENTS. I felt/feel hurt when you yell at me because it scares me. It seems simple but it takes blame out of the conversation and focuses on how their actions make you feel. Don’t dig up the past. Keep the focus on the subject, because bringing up the past and old issues usually leads to more conflict. In most cases the “old dirt” is just that and will not be useful. Don’t use words like “always, never, or should”… these will fuel the conflict placing blame on the other person.

Secondly, use a simple CONFLICT RESOLUTION model (such as those found on www.Peaceworks.com) to help keep your communication positive. This also sets a guideline for your relationship. 1- Be sure to IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM! You will be surprised that the reason you thought you were not talking to a family member may be different from the other person’s perception. 2- FOCUS ON THAT PROBLEM! Don’t go astray, keep focused on the problem at hand. Bringing up the past or bringing out a large laundry list of problems will only fuel each party with anger. 3- DON’T ATTACK THE PERSON, ATTACK THE PROBLEM! It sounds simple but it’s easy to fall into this trap. Name calling, blaming, put-downs, and threats will only add to the conflict. 4- LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND! Zip your lips! Really zip it! This can be one of the most difficult parts of resolving conflict. You could be surprised what you hear, and shed light on how the other person sees the problem. 5- RESPECT THE OTHER PERSON’S FEELINGS! The other person will have differ-ent feelings, ideas, concerns and feelings about the conflict. This does not mean you have to agree with them, but you will have to respect them to move forward in your relationship. 6- TAKE RESPONSI-BILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS! Everyone plays a part in any given situation, what is your part for this situation? What did I do to contribute to this situation?
