Passion for dedicated service and commitment to excellence is a choice. And on this issue, we feature three MPs who have led our crusade towards improvement. Merlyn Agad, Victoria Pineda, and Erwin Recaido, our Shining Star awardees last December, are on the cover this month.

Other stories in this issue are the Masterbulk Westfal-Larsen Officers Conference, MAGMOL Family Day, and Sun Cruises ISO awarding—all aimed at moving towards excellence.

On the coming months, we hope to do inter-views with ManComm members about the recent changes happening at each SBU and SSU.

We are also glad to have news from one of our global offices. Jill Reyes of our Meranti-Magsaysay office shares the first visit of Costa Allegra in Jakarta, Indonesia. Photos of the Meranti-Magsaysay gathering are exclusively available on JUMP Online as well as MHIBI’s Summer Getaway to Pagudpud and SAP User Guide with screenshots.

We are keen to hear from you if you have any articles, ideas, or suggestions for JUMP.

There are some people who do not ask ques-tions. They ride the jeep without caring why the fare is up by P2, they do not wonder why their computer is sometimes slow as a snail, and they do not marvel at how they can reach anyone anywhere in the world with their amazing mobile phone. These people have little curiosity at the world around them.

As Magsaysay People, we are innovators and we need to take a passionate interest in the ‘how, what, and why’ of the things around us. Together, we must break our problems into parts, evaluate our performance, take action, and improve our strategies and processes to achieve our vision.

In the past months, we have invested heavily in improving our IT systems and our SAP team

has made significant achievements with 60% of the company running SAP. Soon, we will also be launching SAP NetWeaver Portal and Knowledge Management to help achieve or-ganizational objectives.

All these technology are put in place to em-power each employee. I enjoin you all to think, question, and be creative.

Magsaysay Transport & Logistics Group (TLG) recently signed an agreement with Novare Technolo-gies for a trial run of the SnAP mo-

bile application that gives companies running SAP solutions the mobile extension it deserves anytime, anywhere. The SnAP application allows SAP users to view, edit, forward, and approve workflow items and requests initially using the BlackBerry platform

Bringing with them boxes of joy, bags of generosity, and tons of love, MAGMOL flew down South and conquered Iloilo and Bacolod with a set of fun-filled and heart-

warming activities last April 4-6, 2009.

On the first day, MAGMOL held its Iloilo-Bacolod Family Day and an outreach activity for the Sambag Elementary School. Almost 500 people composed of crew and their families participated. The whole program was meant for the seafarers and their fami-lies as well as the MAGMOL family to enjoy, bond, and mingle with one another. The affair was graced by Capt. Masaaki Nemoto, MOL Executive Officer.

Part of the information campaign, MAGMOL Direc-tor Capt. Katsumi Uno gave a simple yet meaning-ful presentation about the global financial meltdown and how MOL and its seafarers face the crisis; co-operation and a “can-do” attitude were emphasized as major battle gears to stay afloat amid the raging economic worldwide tide.

As a tradition, MAGMOL Crew Loyalty 19-20 Year Service Awardees were recognized and given tokens of gratitude during the event.

because of its unmatched mobile-data security fea-tures. This will enable TLG executives to approve purchase requisitions and purchase orders through their BlackBerry mobile phones sent as application notifications. Aside from instantaneous sending of data, requests and alerts to the mobile phone, SnAP also allows approvals to be saved and queued for later as well as online and offline viewing of data.

Novare is a company that develops applications and products for the most effective and widely used mobile handsets and PDA solutions in the market today.

TLG has been running the SAP platform since 2006, initially starting with one business unit. Today, all 10 business units already run SAP.

Debs Milano, Vice-President, Magsaysay Shipmanagement, Inc.; Emy Francisco, Sr. Solutions Architect, Novare; Ritchie Ramos, Marketing Mgr., Novare; Noel Perlas, Creative Director, Novare;

As the day progressed, MOL distributed 950 bags with notebooks and pencils to Sambag Ele-mentary School. A very warm welcome from the school administration, faculty, and students were given to MOL executive officer Capt. Masaaki Nemoto, Master of Spirit of MOL Capt. Pon-napa, MAGMOL president C/E Conrado N. dela Cruz, MAGMOL vice president-operations Capt. Francisco D. Menor, MAGMOL director Capt. Katsumi Uno, and MAGSAYSAY chief op-erating officer for Human Resource Group Mar-lon Roño. Also present during the occasion were representatives from the Office of the Mayor in Sambag, Department of Education (DepEd), and barangay officials.

As a token of gratitude, a special tarpaulin was pre-sented to Capt. Nemoto. A thousand thanks were also expressed through colorful “Thank You” cards made by the students.

The second day proceeded with the open house of the Spirit of MOL (SOM). MAGMOL crew and their families were welcomed and accommodated by SOM officers and crew to see the vessel opera-tions and facilities. They were also set to experience how SOM and their hard work help them provide for their families.

In a nutshell, the first weekend of April 2009 to MAGMOL was intensely hectic but absolutely fan-tastic. Kudos to MOL and MAGMOL!

The annual Masterbulk Westfal-Larsen (MWL) Officers Conference was held from April 15-17 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. This year’s theme was “The Future is Not

Cancelled—Weathering the Downturn” as inspired by MWL’s renewed optimism towards a brighter future.

For three days, MWL officers heard from speakers and guests such as MAGSAYSAY president and CEO Doris Ho, MAGSAYSAY chief operating officer-Human Resource Group Marlon Roño, Masterbulk Pte Ltd. president and CEO Ragnar Nielsen, Masterbulk sen-ior manager (Safety and Marine Operations) Ravinder Gour, Masterbulk project manager (Commercial) Rolf Westfal-Larsen Jr., Masterbulk fleet manager CS Ram-

akrishnan, Westfal-Larsen Management AS fleet man-ager Stig Hilland, and Westfal-Larsen Shipping Lennart Stockman among others.

Topics of the speakers ranged from an overview of the year that was, the global financial crisis and its ef-fects, incidents and accidents onboard, environmental concerns, piracy overseas, and expectations for the future.

As for the wives, they enjoyed a series of seminars suited for their theme, “Enjoying Mid-Life”. Officers from both Manila and Iloilo branches of the Wives Clubs were given special certificates of appreciation for their tireless contribution.

On the second day, the service awards ceremony took place in the evening. There were 32 10-year awardees and 28 20-year awardees, summing up to a total of 60 service awardees—the highest number MWL has had so far. Besides the awarding ceremony, the highlights of the evening were the performances, especially from the Wives Clubs of Manila and Iloilo. Both wives clubs entertained the audience with their lively and colorful song and dance numbers—one seg-ment even involved the wives and their kids inviting the guests to dance on-stage with them.

Everyone looks forward to next year’s MWL Officers Conference with excitement.

On April 28, HROM and MTC held a Recognition Rite for Leonardo “Ger-ry” L. Comia, a Maintenance Assist-ant at MTC-Tanza, who returned the

P20,000.00 cash of Noel Pascobillo last March 4. The awarding ceremony was held at the MTC lobby in the presence of MAGSAYSAY chief oper-ating officer-Human Resource Group Marlon Roño, MTC head C/E Romeo Piccio, and HROM deputy head Monina Mayordomo. Gerry and his family accepted a Certificate of Recognition along with a gift check to Corregidor and pocket money worth of P10,000.

C/E Romeo Piccio and MTC-Tanza supervisor Rob-ert Yabut both gave inspirational speeches about Gerry as a co-worker, a person, and a friend. Noel

Pascobillo also shared his story and expressed his gratitude for Gerry, who then responded by giving a heartfelt speech.

It was an overwhelming day, not only to the Comia fam-ily, but also to the people who witnessed the ceremony. For Gerry, it was especially unforgettable because he

didn’t know that only he was being recognized that afternoon, which made his family, particularly his wife, very proud.

Your MAGSAYSAY and MTC family salute you, Gerry, for your good deed. May others follow your example.

Three outstanding MPs soar high

For their dedication, exemplary service, and distinguished work in their respective fields, Merlyn L. Agad, Erwin R. Recaido, and Vic-toria Regina L. Pineda were given the Shining

Star awards at the MAGSAYSAY 60th Anniversary last December 22, 2008. These individuals are stal-warts in their commitment to their duties, taking the initiative to satisfy office and community needs for the betterment of MAGSAYSAY. The three are not the only awardees, but they stand out as employees who have carved a niche that only they can fill in the company.

Merlyn L. Agad received the Shining Star award for Responsibility through her relentlessness as an ac-counting and admin supervisor not just for Visayas but for Mindanao as well. As part of the NMCCLI Cagayan de Oro, she also handles other branches, namely; Davao, General Santos, and Cebu. She shuttles to and from her home base to keep opera-tions running smoothly. Multiple responsibilities and tremendous pressures brought on by her demanding work did not hinder Agad from effectively executing her tasks.

Her gained expertise coupled with her ability to lead others has resulted to the improvement of office operations. Agad successfully sorted out and signifi-cantly lessened the once problematic collectibles in her region.

Despite the scope of her duty, Agad does not lose sight of people. She treats people as she would like to be treated and leads by example. She shows sin-cere concern for the company and its people con-stantly.

The Shining Star award for Responsibility was also given to Erwin R. Recaido, a man who wears two hats for MMC – CMO CF3/Masterbulk Westfal-Larsen; he is both a fleet manager and a manning assistant. He willingly assumed both jobs and saw it as an opportunity to put his skills in the service of oth-ers. His award is well-earned, as he often performs his duties with minimal supervision and with no assist-ant to help him carry-out daily operations. A self-starter, Recaido is a top-notch employee who always keeps himself ready to answer the call of duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Taking his work to heart, he serves as an inspiration to others as he goes the extra mile to accomplish his responsibilities and would even say that “everyday is a working day.”

This hardworking individual is driven by a simple

motivation; he cares about his work, about his co-workers and his family. And with 15 years on the job, Recaido wishes nothing more but to, continue what he started.

Victoria Regina L. Pineda on the other hand, deserves her Shining Star as much as the aforementioned awardees but for a different reason: she earned the Shining Star for Creativity. Pineda’s innovative approach in instituting a new and different system allowed customers to save Php5.5M a year on oper-ating cost for each vessel. She is a true problem-solver who understands the customer’s perspective and meets their needs. She has the ability to manage resources wisely and use them to cultivate better processes. Pineda has never let limitations dim her vision of unparalleled service.

She persistently seeks for ingenious ways to develop operations further and takes on new challenges to find opportunities to create positive changes. Pineda does what needs to be done excellently. She pours utmost dedication to her work continuously and to the best of her abilities. Her initiative turned her into a reliable employee who makes work exceptional and efficient.

These three Shining Star awardees went beyond do-ing their jobs well. They approached work with a “can-do” attitude and saw challenges as a chance to make a difference. They encourage us to make a commitment to excellence and develop a passion for dedicated service. Once again, congratulations to Merlyn L. Agad, Erwin R. Recaido, and Victoria Regina L. Pineda for your inspiring work.
