Something Good is Happening at Crestwood Schools in Portage County: Achievement is UP, Costs are DOWN

Crestwood Local School District is located in western Portage County and serves 2,350 students from Mantua, Hiram, and Shalersville. Crestwood offers a high quality academic program designed to meet the needs of every student. Crestwood’s “performance index” on the Ohio Report Card has increased five out of the last six years. Crestwood High School led the way with its fourth consecutive rating of “excellent.” Its overall OGT passing rate and ACT scores ranked second in Portage County. Crestwood Middle School was rated “excellent” for the first time ever in 2007-2008. In 2006-2007 our value added scores were in the top 6% of all districts in Ohio. Crestwood’s academic strides are the result of improved intervention options for students who struggle AND increased chal-lenges and options for higher ability students that are not necessarily typical in rural schools. Options and recent accomplishments include:

7 AP classes including: Art, Music and Mandarin Chinese I, II, and III.• Our top-rated CHS Wind Ensemble was recently invited to play at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. • Our top-rated art program included two students selected as “top twenty-five” in the Ohio Governor’s Youth •

Art Exhibition for 2009. Numerous post-secondary options at nearby Hiram College. •

Crestwood’s academic performance is not the result of increased spending. Rather, it is the result of improved efficiency and reallocation of resources. General fund expenditures have actually decreased by 12% between 2003 and 2008 as annual expendi-tures fell from $23.5 million to $20.5 million. We are proud that our new health insurance contract will save more than $350,000 per year over the previous contracts. As our mission states--- Crestwood is “Striving to meet the needs of Every Student Every Day.” We seek value in every dollar we spend to increase the academic, athletic, and co-curricular achievements of each student.

Dear Crestwood Residents, The following article will be appearing in a northern Ohio newsletter pub-lished by the Ohio Schools Council and will be distributed to hundreds of school districts throughout the state. Although you may know some of this information already, I thought it would be worth sharing locally. Best wishes as we approach the end of the 2008-2009 school year and GO Cavs and Tribe!

The Three “B”s in School FinanceWhat Do They Mean?

When you hear BBB, it doesn’t mean the Better Business Bureau, but in education in 2009 it means school budgets, bienniums and bailouts. With this article we hope to help you better understand and connect these three concepts to our school district’s situation. Crestwood prepares its budget on a fiscal year basis based upon projected revenues and expenses for each year. In the budget planning process we take into account revenue streams, past needs, past trends and future needs. The operating budget for the Crestwood Local Schools will approach $25,000,000 for the 2009 fiscal year which ends in June. The biennium is a two-year funding pe-riod that the Governor and state legislature are guided by law to set for funding state programs. Schools are funded in these biennium budgets along with all other political subdivisions in the state. Please note that while Crestwood is required by law to submit a five-year forecast of revenues and expenses, at any one time, there is only a maximum of two years state funding set into law at the time of the forecast prepara-tion. Bailout is a relatively new term in our coun-try and is used to describe the economic stimu-lus program recently enacted by our federal government. We have chosen to use this term in this article to quickly define the concept which was recently applied to car manufacturers and banks. At this time we anticipate some funding of specific programs from this stimulus money. We know this stimulus money is very short term (estimated to last no more than 2 years); and may come to Crestwood with defined uses. What does each term mean in relationship to immediate and future planning? Stay tuned for next month’s article (and possible firm devel-opments) in this legislation. If you any questions please feel free to contact Carol Corbett, Treasurer (ext. 2104) or Gregg Reink, Director of Business Services (ext. 2102) at (330) 274-8511.

the problem and develop strategies to direct their own learning. When students experience a problem in context, they are more likely to make connections and thus see the value in what they are learning. Some other benefits to students who participate in this program are an enriched education, a stronger understanding of applications in mathematics and science, useful career skills, college credit, and a jumpstart on a successful future. The program begins with a foundation course and then moves to specialized courses in the following years. In the final capstone course students will work in teams to research, design, and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem. Students will apply principles developed in the preceding courses and will be guided by a community mentor. They must present progress re-ports, submit a final written report, and defend their solutions to a panel of outside reviewers at the end of the school year. If you have any questions about Project Lead the Way feel free to check out the web-site, www.pltwohio.org or contact Mary Ann Strenk in the curriculum office (330)274-8511. Or, contact the high school guid-ance department and speak with Gary Traveny or Diane Caslin.

Sixteen international scholars representing thirteen countries from around the world visited Crestwood High School March 13 to observe the integration of technology in various classrooms. The scholars, who are visiting teachers from countries such as Bangladesh, the Philippines, Brazil, Indonesia, India, Egypt, and Venezuela, are taking a curriculum course at Kent State University. Each is assigned to a local school in Portage County in order to observe American teach-ers and students. Mrs. Teresa Moon, a Crestwood mathematics teacher, has been working with three scholars from this group, along with Kent State professor Jim Hen-derson. This year, Mrs. Moon and her colleagues obtained grants from Hewlett-Packard, First Energy, and Dominion Gas that provided technology to enhance learning in science and math while providing a connection to students’ commu-nity. The international scholars felt compelled to investigate the current uses of technology in Crestwood’s curriculum. With the cooperation of Mrs. Moon, they visited several Crestwood classrooms. They visited Mrs. Moon’s geometry class and saw, “the students using GPS devises and cameras during an outdoor field experience where they were to create a photographic story of several geometric concepts like, translations, reflections, and the Pythagorean Theorem,” said Mrs. Moon. In Mr. Dave McMahon’s Computer Aided Draft and Design they observed demonstrations of CADD programs used to create three-dimensional objects using loft, a tool used to create a solid figure, with a multi-planer setting. And, in Mr. Andy Brown’s Anatomy class they used EKG and computer programs to study muscle movement and tone. Yaser, a teacher from Jordan, said, “It is a great thing to observe a project like this. Students use their knowledge in applicable activities. These kinds of activities are the future of constructivism.” The scholars also visited Mr. Ryan McElyea’s freshman Physical Science class and saw presentations on the Smartboard about egg car projects where they used cameras and projectors to study gravity and its effects. “Kids are really learning in a meaningful way, and they are given the tools needed to be prepared for real life,” said Ebed Sulbarau from Venezuela. After watching Mr. Dan Brubaker’s science class use Lab Quest to display real time and temperature onto the Smartboard, Philippines’ teacher Ana Espejo Mirana said, “The abstract ideas were made solid with the aid of the ‘lab quest device.’” After visiting art classes on how to use computer programs to enhance pho-tography, Viazi Iqbalur Rashid from Egypt said, “I like the art department the most because they integrated both art and technology with more creativity.” Scholars ended the day viewing interactive websites that they can use in their own countries and schools, and reflecting on their day full of new technology and learning.

Sixth-grade students have learned there are many tools avail-able in science that help extend our senses in order to make better ob-servations of the world around us, including metric rulers, triple beam balances and graduated cylinders. The microscope is yet another tool to aid observation. Students learned how to use and care for microscopes, enjoyed viewing the many prepared slides available, and even learned to make their own wet mounts using pond water.

CMS Fine Arts & Science Expo On April 2, the first Fine Arts and Science Expo was held at Crestwood Middle School. The event was made possible in part by teacher grants from the Hiram Com-munity Trust Fund and the Akron Council of Engineering and Science Societies. Guests enjoyed observing the clay pots created by students with guest artist George Woideck of Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio. Also on display were paint-ings, masks and other forms of artwork from all three grade levels. Soloists and ensembles entertained visitors as they entered the small cafeteria transformed into an art gallery. Many of the students performed jingles they created with guest musician Matt Rhine from Cleveland State. In the large cafeteria, everyone had the opportunity to participate in hands on science with some stations supplying kits for further investigation at home. Student scientists shared their knowledge of various topics includ-ing minerals, fossils, chemical changes and the rainforest. Highlighting the evening were the eighth grade student inventions on display in the science rooms. The well attended event celebrated the creative and talented students at the middle school in arts and sci-ence.

Fourth Grade “Japanese Tea” The fourth graders in Mrs. Patton and Mrs. Franks’ classes recently read a book during Language Arts that had a man from Japan as one of the main characters. After finishing the book, the boys and girls were paired up into groups of four and researched a topic about Japan. Each child then sent a letter of invitation to either their grandpar-ents or other family guest to attend a “Tea” at which they shared their Japanese research projects and shared cookies and punch. More than eighty guests and parent helpers attended the event March 13 in the Intermediate School cafeteria. Thank you to all of the families who baked cookies for the event! A big thank you to the CIS PTO for providing the drinks! Pictured are student Derek Crislip with his grandparents Barb and Jack Crislip.

Third graders in Mrs. Gard-ner and Mrs. Vacca’s class-room are taking time to learn the important qualities that go into making and keeping lasting friendships. They first completed a brief self assess-ment of their best qualities and then wrote new qualities they could add to enrich their friendships. Many students said that good friends are kind, honest, fun and sharing. New goals for students were to be dependable, thoughtful, patient, respectful and to use
