Dear Friends:

LUCY LOONEY FAREWELL:LUCY LOONEY FAREWELL:LUCY LOONEY FAREWELL:LUCY LOONEY FAREWELL: In 1995, Lucy Looney came to the parish offices as a volunteer. Two years later she was hired

part-time to help with many things and to serve as receptionist. On May 24th, she retires after 23 years of dedicated service. Lucy

always brings a smile and joy to our staff and to all who come here. She is a fun person who loves our parish. In the past few

years, she has also been the coordinator and the contact person for the RCIA program. So many of the people who have entered

the Church in the past few years have found her so welcoming and organized about all the details of this wonderful program.

She and her husband, Tom, remain in the parish but she will be greatly missed after serving so many years. We will miss her and

all the fun and laughs we shared. Thank you, Lucy, for serving God’s people with great dedication and joy.

MAY 16 MAY 16 MAY 16 MAY 16 ---- FEAST OF ST. GEMMA GALGANIFEAST OF ST. GEMMA GALGANIFEAST OF ST. GEMMA GALGANIFEAST OF ST. GEMMA GALGANI: Considered a Passionist Saint, our community cherishes St. Gemma as one of

our own. She totally lived the spirituality of St. Paul of the Cross while remaining a lay woman. Her spiritual director was a

Passionist priest, Venerable Fr. Germano. St. Gabriel Possenti appeared to her and called her his sister placing the Passionist

Sign over her heart. Gemma was born in 1878 near the ancient walled city of Lucca, Italy. From her childhood she dedicated

herself to meditation on the Passion of Jesus Christ. She was orphaned and then charitably welcomed into the home of a deeply

Christian family. She had a wonderful devotion toward the Eucharist and toward Jesus Crucified. Graced with special supernat-

ural charisms, she offered herself to God for the conversion of sinners. Her ardent desire was to enter the Passionist Nuns but

this was never realized because of various difficulties, including her continual poor health and the publicity surrounding her

extraordinary mystical graces. She distinguished herself as an exceptional exemplar of holiness in the midst of the world. She

had many visions and the stigmata, the wounds of Jesus, were at times visible on her body. She died at Lucca on Holy Saturday,

April 11, 1903 at the age of 25. She predicted before her death that the Passionist Nuns would open a convent in her hometown

of Lucca and said: “The Passionists will not receive me in life but they will have me in death.” In 1905, a Convent of Passionist

Nuns was opened in Lucca. In 1923, Gemma’s body was removed from the parish cemetery and placed beneath the main altar of

the convent chapel, where it is venerated by the Passionist Nuns and thousands of pilgrims who come each year and pray at her

shrine. Pius XII declared her a Saint in 1940. During our parish pilgrimage to Rome and Passionist Shrines in Italy in the Fall of

2016, we brought the pilgrims to Lucca and saw this beautiful shrine and said Mass over her relics. We also visited her home

and the room where she received the stigmata. The Passionist Nuns greeted us there. Likewise, the next day on our way to

Rome, we stopped in Tarquinia at the first convent founded in 1770 by St. Paul of the Cross. That convent had approximately

16 Nuns, mostly young. They welcomed us into their beautiful cloister and sang songs for us and gave us refreshments.

THE PASSIONIST NUNS:THE PASSIONIST NUNS:THE PASSIONIST NUNS:THE PASSIONIST NUNS: It was from the cloistered convent in Tarquinia that 4 young Passionist Nuns came in 1910 to found

the first convent of Nuns in the United States at Pittsburgh, PA. They live in community a totally cloistered life of prayer and

work. There are currently 9 Nuns in Pittsburgh. It is a very joyous and happy community. They support themselves by making

altar breads. It is from them that I order our hosts each month. The priests at our monastery in Pittsburgh offer Mass for them

daily. We brought our high school students to their convent last summer during some days of the mission trip. Our kids worked

on their grounds and met the Nuns in the afternoon at Mass and prayer. I periodically call to increase our order of hosts by a

thousand or two. Mother Mary Ann always laughs. Other places, she says, are lowering their orders but Raleigh is adding thou-

sands!

Gratefully,

First Reading First Reading First Reading First Reading ---- Acts 2:1Acts 2:1Acts 2:1Acts 2:1----11111111 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God."

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.

As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue's sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

Justice Bulletin Board And suddenly there came from the sky

a noise like a driving wind -Acts 2: 2

Having lived in Florida for the early part of my life, I can re-member the roar of hurricanes, the sheer power, and the clean up afterward that sometimes required new improve-ments in our community, our personal homes, and, most def-initely, a new less-complacent attitudes in ourselves. If a hur-ricane can do that, can you imagine what an encounter with the Holy Spirit can do?

In his homily from Pentecost 2013, Pope Francis states: Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under control, if we are the ones who build, program, and plan our lives in accordance with our own ideas, our own comfort, our own preferences. This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we accept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, allowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision. We fear that God may force us to strike out on new paths and leave behind our all too narrow, closed and selfish hori-zons in order to become open to his own. Yet. . .Noah, mocked by all, builds an ark and is saved; Abram leaves his land with only a promise in hand; Moses stands up to the might of Pharaoh and leads his people to freedom; the apostles, huddled fearfully in the Upper Room, go forth with courage to proclaim the Gospel. This is not a question of novelty for novelty’s sake, the search for something new to relieve our boredom, as is so often the case in our own day. The newness which God brings into our life is something that actually brings fulfilment, that gives true joy, true serenity, because God loves us and desires only our good. Let us ask ourselves: Are we open to God’s surprises? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out along the new paths which God’s newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new?

On this Pentecost, may you fearlessly be made new when you hear God’s call and encounter the Spirit’s wind.

Words of Pope FrancisWords of Pope FrancisWords of Pope FrancisWords of Pope Francis “Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the wel-comed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43). The Lord entrusts to the Church's motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future. This solidarity must be concretely expressed at every stage of the migratory experience – from departure through journey to arrival and return. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will.” - Pope FrancisPope FrancisPope FrancisPope Francis, Message for the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, 2018

Live the Liturgy "Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gen-

tle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these

things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God.

Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their af-

fairs-all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith,

working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed-all point to something greater than ourselves working and

living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?

Lava nuestras inmundicias, fecunda nuestras desiertos y cura nuestras heridas.

Doblega nuestra soberbia, calienta nuestras frialdad, endereza nuestras sendas.
