MAY - JUNE 2019
MAY 16, 2019 LUNCHEON MEET OUR MAY SPEAKER • BILL BUNKLEY • RADIO HOST
Bill Bunkley is a familiar voice throughout Florida,
including his hometown of Tampa. After many years of
defending conservative values, Bill brings his experience
to today’s current spiritual, political, and cultural issues.
Each weekday, he has his own program on Christian Talk
Radio.
Bill has maintained a continual presence in Tallahassee
since starting his work there in the mid-70s, developing
relationships with governors, cabinet officers, and
members of the Florida House and Senate. He has been a leader in the implementation of
legislation advancing pro-family policies and maintaining religious liberty protections. His
unique Tallahassee and statewide relationships give his listeners informed access to the
newsmakers of the day.
From 1996 to 2011 Bill served as the legislative affairs
consultant of the Florida Baptist Convention. Bill
launched the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty
Commission in 2012 and served as the organization’s
first president and CEO. It was organized to ensure
that the children of tomorrow would live in a Florida
open to our traditional family and spiritual values.
Bill is an Eagle Scout and serves on the Southern
Regional Board of the Boy Scouts of America. Today he is one of the pioneers of a new
group, Trail Life USA, which builds Godly character in young boys and men through a
similar outdoor program. Also, he is an experienced business owner as a Real Estate
Broker since 1975 and was a Mortgage Broker for 28 years.
Bill and his wife Toni and son Zachary are active members of Idlewild Baptist Church
where Bill teaches the Faithful Servants Bible Fellowship class.

MEET OUR MAY MUSICAL TALENT • ALAN HOAK
Alan and Jean Hoak have been attending Idlewild Baptist
Church since 1998 when the church was still located on Bearss
Avenue. They were invited to attend by Jean’s co-worker, Edna
Rogers. It was an “All Church Orchestra Night” in which Alan
was specifically invited to participate. The rest is history...they
have been attending Idlewild ever since and became active,
faithful members. Alan has been playing saxophone since he
was in the 5th grade. After
he found the Lord, he wished
he had made that decision
sooner so he could have played for Him earlier in his life. He has
now dedicated the rest of his life to play music to the Lord. Alan
says his Bible cover tells it all...it says ”SAXMAN.”
For many years, Alan liked performing with various music
groups in all kinds of special events. Currently, he spends much
of his time working with music and teaching at the Centre for
Music and Worship at Idlewild Baptist Church. He is also proud
to be an active member of the wonderful IBC Worship Orchestra. Alan thanks us for inviting him and
hopes we will enjoy the nice music.
MEET HERNIE VANN, ARTIST
A true Florida son, Hernie Vann was born in Tampa and grew up in
East Tampa. From the beginning, he was singled out as an artist.
Hernie’s teachers could always count on his original ideas to make the
classroom a creative place for learning. After graduating from
Hillsborough High School, Hernie went to the University of Tampa for a
year. The outbreak of the Korean War interrupted his education and
Hernie enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. After spending four
years in the Coast Guard, he went back to the University of Tampa to
earn a degree in Art Education. Upon graduation he went to work for
the Hillsborough County Schools and taught Art for 35 years! During this time, Hernie earned
a Masters Degree at the University of South Florida. He also taught in Junior College as well
as in Adult Education.

MEET VIRGEN MILAGROS PUENTE (MILLIE PUENTE), PERCUSSIONIST/VOCALIST
Millie Puente is inseparable from her music. Singing and playing
the congas and Timbales is a fundamental part of her life and
Puerto Rican heritage. Millie was born in Bronx, New York and

who was considered the best percussionist in all of history and

FISHING, FAITH, AND FUN
Fishing, Faith & Fun Teams Up with Hooks for Hope • by Campbell Middlebrooks
Fishing, Faith and Fun (FF&F) has been blessed
with thirteen wonderful years of sharing the Gospel
and the sport of fishing with children and the adults
who accompany them. Our ministry has expanded
to help other faith-based organizations in our
community and beyond (out of state included) to
begin children’s fishing programs modeled after the
FF&F curriculum. This year we were presented
with another opportunity to serve our community
and share the Gospel through fishing.
Last December I was contacted by Matthew
Saperstein from Hooks for Hope, a startup 5013C
corp., wanting to work with autistic children through the medium of fishing. To prepare,
Matthew attended each of our six sessions of 2019 FF&F, auditing and participating in our
“Great Barracudas” special needs class. His plan was to “hook up” with CARD, the Center
for Autism and Related Disorders at USF and invite children with autism to learn to fish and
have fun.
At the Event…...

MAY - JUNE FISHING, FAITH, AND FUN (CONT.)
On February 16, twenty volunteers, nine children and their parents
attended the first event at IBC’s Lake George pond. The CARD
director spoke to the group along with mascot, Josh the Otter, who
helped the children understand water safety. Seven FF&F teachers
provided instruction and overall safety for these children. Thankfully,
the fish came to the party also. Each child caught several fish and
the smiles on the children’s faces: priceless! Of course, IBC’s own
guys, Jason and Alan, took first place: no surprise there. They have
each received a trophy in FF&F events several times. This occasion
gave FF&F teachers the chance to share information about Idlewild
with Hooks for Hope parents, many of whom were unchurched and
unaware that IBC had a program for special needs children. Families were excited to learn
that these joint events would be held quarterly and some said they would be visiting IBC in
the interim.
Our second fishing day was held March 18 and the next one will be May 18. WFLA Channel
8 sent a reporter to film us on March 18 and the video was shown during the noon newscast
the following week. Here is the link to view the video: https://www.wfla.com/news/around-
town/hooks-for-hope-teaches-kids-with-special-needs-how-to-fish/1875007002
The Lord continues to open up mission opportunities we could never imagine. The latest
which is now in progress involves working with a retired Navy surgeon who is affiliated with
Operation Healing Hands and Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa. The doctor works with
veterans who have hand injuries. We are proposing a program to teach these vets to fly fish
on IBC’s ponds and, of course, share the Gospel with them.
Now, take a look at these pictures. Have you ever seen a happier group than this? I think I
even see the fish smiling!
Fun Fishing….. Everyone a Winner….. What a catch!
