As many of you are aware, the water and environment Warriors recently won a major victory in putting a nail in the coffin of the Jordan Cove-LNG Pipeline this week- when DEQ announced the denial of the permits from the State of Oregon. One of the reasons DEQ denied the Clean Water Act permit for Jordan Cove LNG was the potential for the spilling of toxic wastewater caused by drilling that could happen in the Coos Bay estuary and the over 485 Oregon Waterways this pipeline would travel thru, under and across. Not to mention, the over 40,000 public comments that came pouring into DEQ from people protecting our clean water, air and lands. BUT, this fight is NOT OVER--- we are still in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Commenting period- which is open till July 5th, 2019! DEQ is with the State, we still need to make our voices loud and clear to the Feds! Please join us for 2 Comment writing sessions: Chiloquin May 15th & Klamath Falls May 16th. *Members of the Klamath Tribes Youth Council, Signal Fire with Tribal Artist Kaila Farrell-Smith, and Rogue Climate will be hosting two workshop writing sessions, we encourage you to attend or put your comment in today. Note: If you cannot attend, you can stop by the Klamath Tribal Headquarters and fill out your comment form and leave it with us to mail in.

News Release from Oregon State Fire Marshal Posted on FlashAlert: May 6th, 2019 8:26 AM Downloadable file: Defensible_Space_Image_for_Press_Release_May_6_2019.jpg May is Wildfire Awareness Month in Oregon, and federal, state and firefighting agencies are encouraging homeowners to make sure their homes are protected from wildfire. The Oregon Department of Forestry, Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal and Keep Oregon Green, in collaboration with Oregon forest protective associations, the Office of Emergency Management and federal wildland agencies, are taking this opportunity to promote defensible space around homes before fire strikes this summer. “The roof is the most critical part of the house when it comes to wildfire protection,” says Oregon State Fire Marshal Jim Walker. “Embers can collect and ignite on the roof, in gutters and enter unscreened openings around the house. Although non-combustible roofing material is preferred, regardless of the construction, keep roofs, gutters and eaves clear of all leaves, pine needles and other flammable debris.” To reduce the risk, fire officials suggest removing dead vegetation a minimum of 30 feet around your house and other structures. In most cases, trees and healthy plants do not need to be removed. However, trees should be pruned and grass kept short and green to keep fire on the ground and more manageable by fire crews. Maintain a five-foot fire-free area closest to the home using nonflammable landscaping material and fire resistant plants. “Defensible space is a property’s first line of defense against wildfire,” says Oregon Department of Forestry Fire Prevention Coordinator Tom Fields. “Creating and maintaining defensible space around homes can improve your property’s likelihood of surviving a wildfire. Having defensible space also makes it safer for firefighters who may have to defend someone’s home.” Homeowners should also consider access issues for large fire trucks. Long driveways should be at least 12 feet wide, have 10 feet of vegetation clearance from the centerline out, and about 14 feet overhead. Large vehicle turnaround areas are critical for your safety as well as firefighter safety. Should a fire occur near a community, Oregon Office of Emergency Management Director Andrew Phelps encourages residents to be prepared if an evacuation is necessary. “Wildfires can come without warning and move quickly, so residents need to prepare now in case they have to leave their home,” Phelps said. “Make sure to put together a ‘Go Kit,’ register for emergency notification systems in your community, and make a plan where your family will go and how you will stay in contact if evacuated.” It is the homeowner’s responsibility to protect their homes by building defensible space. For more information, visit the websites for the Office of State Fire Marshal, the Office of Emergency Management, Keep Oregon Green and the Oregon Department of Forestry, or call your nearest ODF or forest protective association office. Additional information on preparing for wildfires can be found on the Ready.gov website. ----------------- Contact Office of State Fire Marshal: Rudy Owens, 503-934-8217, office or 971-332-0052, cell Contact Office of Emergency Management: Paula Fasano Negele, 503-378-2127, office or 503-871-8689, cell Contact Oregon Department of Forestry: Tom Fields, 503-945-7440, office or 503-983-8897, cell

Lakeview, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lakeview District will host two National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) workshops. These workshops are free and open to anyone interested in learning more about NEPA, specifically writing substantive comments and the BLM comment responses process. Workshops will be held:

Friday, May 31, 2019, 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial Hall 513 Center Street Lakeview, OR 97630

Saturday, June 1, 2019, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Paisley Community Center 705 Chewaucan Street Paisley, OR 97636

The NEPA process requires federal agencies to assess the environmental effects of proposed actions prior to making a decision. Types of actions may include but not limited to permit applications, timber harvests, and more. Through the NEPA process agencies evaluate the environmental and related social and economic effects of a proposed action. A public involvement process is required including opportunities for public review and comment on the analysis and alternatives. This workshop will help participants learn more about the process and respond to the proposed actions. The workshops combine presentations, discussions, and exercises on public involvement in the NEPA process. Discussion will include NEPAs requirement for the BLM, why does the BLM ask for public comment, and the BLMs review and evaluation of public comments. Exercises in reviewing public comments and writing a substantive comment.

Plastic is in just about everything these days, including living, breathing creatures, from sea critters to people. Environmental waste and litter breaks down into tiny, microscopic particles. Those particles can then seep into water supplies and subsequently work their way into just about anything. That includes plastics in the seafood we eat. Now, a new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology has found that it takes just six hours for billions of nanoplastic particles — those with a diameter some 100 times smaller than a human hair — to accumulate throughout the body of a certain mollusk.

For this experiment, researchers in Canada and the UK created their own nanoplastics: a version of a polymer called polystyrene, the main compound that makes up Styrofoam. Then, in various aquariums, they mixed algae, a food source for the scallops, and nanoplastic particles of two different sizes: 24 nanometers and 250 nanometers. “We only exposed the scallops to the nanoparticles for a few hours, and despite them being transferred to clean conditions, traces were still present several weeks later,” In fact, it took the scallops 48 days to get to the point where the team couldn’t detect any more plastic. Viscose, Rayon and Deforestation Dissolving pulp, or bleached wood pulp, is the base material for viscose and rayon, fibres which are used in many garments by the fashion industry. What you might not know is that the pulp is often taken from trees in endangered or ancient forests. This means that the clothes we buy and wear are contributing directly to deforestation and habitat destruction. Currently, more than 150 million trees are logged to be made into clothes. Despite a few big-name brands gathering viscose from sustainably certified forests, the number of trees logged for viscose is rising in forests in Indonesia, Canada and the Amazon. Read more

Because of human activities the world continued to lose forests in 2018, according to data compiled by research group Global Forest Watch and analysts at the University of Maryland. Clear cutting—removing large patches of forest indiscriminately—caused the highest loss of forest cover overall. Much of that was to make room for ranching, but other commercial activities like mining and soy production were also involved. Of the countries that lost the most forest since 2001, four are located in South America. The World Resources Institute, which tracks global forest cover, reports deforestation is increasing in Brazil, Indonesia, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia. I am looking for a man named Lynn Kelly who reportedly moved to Chiloquin from Craig Alaska. He is, or was a truck driver and is currently approximately 77 years old. I was adopted in 1963 and after years of searching, I was able to find my birth mother, Leslie Ann Poareo, who told me that Lynn Kelly, of Tuledo OR was my biological father. I don't think that he ever knew she was pregnant. I am hoping to make contact with him, or someone who might know him so I can gather a little more information on my biological family. If Lynn Kelly no longer lives in Chiloquin, I would be interested in speaking to anyone who knew him. The Quail Trail Schedule has been revised, effective Monday 10/08/2018. The reason for the changes is to aid young adults living in Chiloquin (and surrounding areas) traveling to/from Eagle Ridge High School in Klamath Falls. The students depend on the Quail to get to/from school. Now students may ride Route 2 to get to school, and catch Route 4 to go home after school – cutting their commute time by roughly 4 hours!

If you are interested in getting more involved in your community in a relaxing friendly way, meeting some of your neighbors and getting to know more about this area, please come by and check us out. We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.
