FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

As we sang on last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, “Hallelujah, Thine the Glory…Hallelujah, Amen…Hallelujah, Thine the Glory…Revive Us Again!!” How faithful was our God to honor that request! What a wonderful “rhema” Word we received this past week from Pastor Brian

Edmonds of Macedonia Church of Pittsburgh at our Annual Spring Revival. How wonderful to welcome him back to his old stomping ground in Durham and First Calvary! It was 3 days of awesome, dynamic, soul searching, empowering, and edifying worship. Are you ready to “Change the Channel”? How do you respond “When the Wind is Against You?” Do you realize it’s “Time for a Shift”? To God Be the Glory! If you missed any of those days (May 7th-9th), I encourage you to order a copy of the services. Just a reminder, by the way, the notebook to order CDs or DVDs is kept at the ministry mailboxes. You can order a CD ($5) or a DVD ($10) of recorded services whenever you are at the church, whether for choir rehearsal, ministry meetings, Bible Study or Worship Services. When your order is ready, someone from the Audio/Visual Ministry will call and let you know. A special thank you goes to our wonderful Audio/Visual Ministry volunteers who work tirelessly to insure that our services are captured on media to be enjoyed later. They also work tirelessly on making sure we are “tech saavy” with our video screens, audio system and TV broadcast. Thank you…..and hey, why don’t you come and join them? Happy Mother’s Day! I have to give a “shout-out” to a very special Mother in my life, my loving wife and the mother of my three sons, Mrs. Judith H. Davis. I give God thanks for my Mother In-Love, Mrs. Cecelia Isham Hayes, who has played a very supportive role in our family. I am thankful for the Mother of my 2 grandsons, Mrs. Josephine Kerr Davis. I also thank God for the memory of Mrs. Julia Hannah Davis, who is, by God’s Grace, the reason I am who I am today. Mothers are a blessing and a gift….from biological mothers, to “spiritual mothers”, to God-mothers, to Grandmothers, to church mothers, to “second”, “third” and “fourth” mothers ! I also extend special encouragement to those of us who have lost our mothers…may we do all we can to continue their legacies. Celebrate the “mamas” in your life, not just today, but everyday. Mothers, Grandmothers, God-Mothers, Aunts, sisters, and Spiritual Mothers, my prayer for you today is that others may see Christ when they see you. Celebrate the mothers and the influential women in your life.

May is moving right along and so is Evangelism Month! I pray that each of you have your calendar insert for the month somewhere visible and that you are planning to join us in the events that are coming! One event on the horizon is the Evangelism Training Session, on this Saturday, May 19th. Jesus has commissioned us to go and make disciples. The question is, “Will we obey?” As I often do this time of year, I remind us all of the sermon Minister Carter preached some time ago, “Witnessing is Not an Option”. Plan to step out of your comfort zones and do what thus said the Lord. Ready? Set? Let’s GROW!!! Let the disciple making begin…and continue! Remember, First Calvary, that we are an evangelizing church, a witnessing church and AN EXCITITNG CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION.

THE DEACON’S MESSAGE

Sometimes, people in our lives do a good job of making us feel like second-class citizens. Painful experiences such as these could come from a friend, a family member or maybe even a co-worker. In one way or another, we are always trying to measure up to someone else’s view of who we should be, how we should look or what we should be contributing to the world. Even though people opinions of you may not be high, you should never forget how important you are to God. God created each of us with great plans in mind. Therefore, the next time someone tries to make you feel bad about who you are, or who you are trying to become in Christ, let him or her know God loves you and that is all that matters. Zechariah 14:9, NASB tells us “And the LORD will be king over all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the only one, and His name the only one.” When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are given access to the King’s Inner Court. No matter what anyone thinks about you, remember you are royalty because you have a special relationship with the King.
