ABOUT
As in many other public sectors, Mental Health and Addictions services are increasingly being asked to demonstrate that they are providing evidence-based services for their patients/clients. This conference will be aimed at exploring this issue, some of the challenges that we face in meeting this goal, strategies to overcome the challenges, and successes we can all learn from. This conference will feature diverse topics, both academic and applied, on knowledge translation/mobilization, implementation science, and quality and/or systems improvement in mental health and addictions, and at the interface between mental health and other related systems (e.g., education, corrections). Attendees will have access to workshops, discussions, conversations as well as traditional academic paper presentations. The target audience for this conference is anyone with an interest in implementation science, and issues relating to evidence-based practices in mental health and addictions. The focus is inter-disciplinary, and will be of interest to :
Hospital or community-based clinicians Researchers and academics Project managers Consumers/Survivors Students Persons with lived experience Public Health Community Members Leaders and policy-makers in mental health and addictions

#StigmaEndsWithMe Gord Garner, Dr. Kim Hellemans, Dr. Kim Corace, Dr. John Weekes
People living with a variety of mental health and substance use disorders experience stigma and discrimination in many aspects of their life. Stigmatizing attitudes at home, in school, in the workplace, and in society more broadly prevent many individuals from living a meaningful and satisfying life. Stigma can also create perceived and actual barriers to receiving quality health and mental health services, further compounding the negative impact on their wellness and quality of life. In this workshop, a panel of experts will discuss the many facets of stigma, speaking from the perspectives of a person with lived experience, researchers, clinicians, and leaders. Through this workshop, you will learn how you can contribute to making sure #StigmaEndsWithMe. Learning Objectives:
1. To increase participants’ awareness of stigmatizing attitudes towards substance use and substance use disorders, and the harms that these attitudes cause in our society. 2. To increase participants’ knowledge of where they need to make personal changes to their own language, attitudes or behaviours. 3. To increase participants’ capacity to address stigmatizing language and practices so that they can return to their communities and workplaces with the vision, strategies and resources to challenge stigma at home. 4. To create connections amongst participants to continue to increase effective actions to confront and end stigma in Canada.

Brilliant Idea? Let it Shine! Find Your Voice. Spread Your Message. Expand Your Reach Laura C. Ball, Della Saunders (Waypoint Research Institute), Public Relations expert from Georgian College
Have you found yourself with a great idea, but have trouble getting people to understand or buy-in? Have results, but can’t get traction to make an impact? We will explore the skills needed to improve communications and tailor approaches across varied sectors and stakeholders. Social work and psychiatry, or, epidemiology and recreation therapy – these are just two examples of different disciplines where we can face communication barriers that cloud our understanding of one another’s needs and goals. Academics, the public,
Indigenous peoples, the LGBTQ+ community, new immigrants to Canada, those with English as a second language, and others all can have different communication styles that can affect how messages are received. We offer a one-day workshop that will help us navigate the challenges of communicating across sectors and multiple perspectives. To succeed in effectively pitching our ideas and messages, we have to adapt our communication strategy to the audience and ensure our sentences are understandable, succinct, and clear. Once we achieve focus on our audiences and clarity in messaging, we can create a plan to broadly pitch our work and even cultivate an accessible social media presence. Our three-person workshop team includes a knowledge translation expert and an experienced writer from the Waypoint Research Institute, as well as a skilled member of the Public Relations program at Georgian College. The learning objectives attendees can expect are:
1. How to select key messages and tailor these points to specific audiences 2. How to achieve clarity in communications and write to be understood 3. How to navigate social media and disseminate ideas to the right audiences

Ten Hot Topics in Youth Mental Health Ian Manion
Youth mental health is a topic of high significance provincially, nationally and internationally. In this presentation, key research and practice issues in youth mental health and health care will be discussed. These will include some of the main challenges facing young people and their families (depression, suicide, substance misuse), some of the promising innovations and practices emerging in the field, as well as provincial and national initiatives that have the potential to make a difference. Never has youth mental health been of such high profile in Canada. Collectively we must take advantage of this momentum to make real and sustainable change happen.

Gathering Momentum in Research: The Case of Risk Leslie-Anne Keown
Conceptions of risk are components in most of the theorizing in social science and science endeavours especially around behaviour and specifically criminal or deviant behaviour. Indeed, the very conception of one kind of risk is what underlies the understandings of probability and statistical significance. However, there is often a lack of integration of the notions of risk between disciplines leading to misunderstandings and often talking past each other instead of generating momentum and moving forward. This talk will focus on exploring these competing notions of risk and discuss a variety of conceptions of risk and how they might be integrated. Exploration of ways to gain momentum in this endeavour and the challenges that such an endeavour will likely face will be discussed.
