Prez Sez Well Vern DJ has done it again! “Guest Editor”? Despite a chance at a parting shot at friends or foes, Vern has decided to honor the marque! This is typical of Vern’s dedication & commitment to excellence! Thank you Vern for doing a wonderful job of keeping the Morgan marque alive! Rarely a detail omitted! However, One mistake!! 300 hours into the +8, not 3000. Ah! I’ve been waiting for that one error. Got Ya Vern! Who am I trying to kid. Vern has been an inspi-ration to many Morgan owners! He has been a good friend and a client! Vern & Amanda will be dearly missed. The ‘down-under” Morgan group are receiving a true enthusiast. I have discussed with Vern a meet to be held at their new place in the future.

It would have to be more than a weekend event I think? How big is the new place Vern? I’m guessing 12 to 20 house guests.

Transport Canada has done it again. After 5 weeks of correspondence, We have been turned down by “big brother” once more. Regulations per-mit the Importation of “Purpose Built Race Cars”. Apparently a Morgan lightweight fitted with one racing seat, full racing equipment including roll bar & tuned suspension, no wipers, washer’s, bumper’s, interior, wind-shield, heater or warranty is not a race car. It is not that we are dealing with a dictatorship as the decision was

Martin Beer ([email protected])

received by email from a general mail box so I don’t even know who made the decision. I love this Country!

Ford can do it, General Motor’s can do it? There must be someone at Transport Canada who doesn’t like Morgan’s.

Thanks to Norm Mort for the article on Mum’s +4. It brought back some very good memory’s of the past. The +8 is on the road at long last, some final details & polishing to complete after I spend some time with Family. Donna has mixed feelings about me being around on weekends & evenings. Apparently she has grown fond of having her pick & choose of TV pro-grams & meals!

Guest Editor Speaks VernDale-Johnson([email protected]) Well, well, well… what an opportunity! Tom suggested I take over the notes for this edi-tion of the Blurb. An opportunity for me to offer one last time some of the style I’d used in previous Blurbs. There were few restrictions so… a couple of my favorites will be sprinkled throughout the issue – some Valentin Tanase pen & ink drawings, some mate-rial from my new “home” club’s newsletter “The Morgan Ear” of the Morgan Owner’s Club of Australia (MOCA) and a few digs at fellow Morganeers.

May 7 was the last Central Canada MSCCC Pub Brunch of the 2006 pre-season. Next Pub Brunch will be on October 8. Mark your calen-dar now! Attending the May 7 meeting were Fred & Outi Hendricksen (their first time out to a pub), Don & Joan Martin, John & Sharon Roden, Trevor Davies & Kathy Jackson, Glenn & Rene Nigh, Ray Shier, Jenny & Steve Beer (in, would you believe, Steve’s 67 +4 Super Sports – great to see it back on the road, what patina!), Dave Farmer, Chris Pattenden, Liz & Ray Stevens, Tom Van Zuiden, Malcolm Taylor, and Vern Dale-Johnson. In the absence of our Prez, John Roden led the group in a lively dis-cussion on events for the coming season – many outlined below. Dave Farmer is planning another “Ale Trail” run, most likely for August 13th so put that date on your calendar and, if you can lend a hand, give Dave a call at 905-278-3219. Other business included a note that Hendrick Rens has created several concepts for a new MSCCC badge. These will be re-viewed and offered to the membership in an upcoming Blurb – save one for me!

Readers of the Blurb (great pics from the last issue) will know Alan & Kathy Lytle ven-tured to New Zealand for the repeat of “Morgans Down-Under”. We understand the group – from the Isle of Man, UK, US and Canada had another very enjoyable run and look forward to reminiscing with the Lytle’s once they finally make it back to Toronto. The NZ drive wasn’t enough… they tacked on a drive from Vancouver to Toronto just to make an adventure out of it! Last issue there was a picture of their 4/4 being delivered in NZ with the entire exhaust tied to the luggage rack. On the route back across Can-ada (bit cool on the prairies I expect) their ignition failed in Dryden Ontario – it is a Mor-gan Kathy!. Hopefully by the time this Blurb gets delivered they will have finally made it home. We look forward to tales of their adventures at the upcoming BBQ on June 24th.The picnic starts at 2:00PM. Please call Kathy or Alan at 905-822-1606 to RSVP. BY.O.B.Appetizers and desserts would be appreciated.

Coming Central Canada events the Dale-Johnson’s will be attending include the May 27-28 “Wheels and Wings” event at the Toronto Aerospace Museum where MSCCC member Stu Harvey has promised to hold “preferred parking” for Morgans; June 4 “Classics Import Auto Show” hosted by the MGCCT in the Distillery District of To-ronto; June 18 “Classics Against Cancer” in Georgetown where Ray Shier will be holding court under the MSCCC gazebo while Neil Young, founder of the event, decides which entry deserves this year’s “best in show”. On June 25, those who survive the BBQ at the Lytle’s can venture out with us to Mosport where MSCCC member Malcolm Taylor is in charge of the “Vintage Car Show” in conjunction with the VARAC “Mosport Vintage Car Festival”.

Not on our list but hopefully on yours will be MOG36 in Shepherdstown West Virginia organized by the MCCDC (June 30 – July 4). Martin & Donna, Steve & Jenny will be attending. Check out the MCCDC website for details of accommodation and a registra-tion form. Those thinking of attending should call the Clarion Inn at 304-876-7000 to make a reservation, now! Could this be the return of a yearly “MSCCC run to the MOG”?

“Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Morgan 4/4” is the theme of this year’s Boot ‘n’ Bonnet “British Car Day” in Kingston on August 20th – an excellent opportunity to head east and meet with our MSCCC members from the Kingston -- Ottawa – Montreal area.

In September, Desi Benet is coor-dinating a Morgan event at the “Zippo Vintage GP” in Watkin’s Glen over the Sept 7-10 weekend. You can be assured those who attend this event will have a great time as the organization and venue are first class. Get your reservations in early so you’re not disappointed. The Glenora Run Road Rally fills up fast, as does the Chalet Leon Motel. Check the website for registration forms and coordinate your visit with Desi at 416 901 2712 [email protected]

Blurb Editor Thomas Van Zuiden ([email protected])

Adios Vern! Have a safe move! Keep the Shiny Side Up! Keep a bottle of wine ready! Thanks to Valentin Tanase for all his images of Morgans used in this newsletter.

Past Prez Sez… Vern Dale-Johnson [email protected]

In Australia, on March 15 we lost a world-wide Morgan friend and long time Morgan en-thusiast Ken Ward. We’ll miss Ken but will be continually reminded of him as his Mor-gans and legacy to the MOCA club will live on.

As most of my comments are up in the “Guest-Editor” column at this point I’ve just a few notes from my role as the BCCI representative. First, I did note sometime ago the BCCI Long Distance Award recipients. Not included was the late request (hint for all you who covet this award… don’t be late!) are Liz & Ray Stevens in their 4/4 4-seater.

This year you can get a jump on the collection of mileage / kilometer-age by doing some serious driving during British Car Week – May 27 through June 4 “Get out and drive!!!”.

Rod Wilkinson is taking over the position of BCCI representative for the MSCCC. Rod and I at-tended the BCCI AGM on May 6 where Rod was in-troduced and I took my leave of the group. One question that comes up from new representatives to the BCCI is “what is the purpose”. A good question with an answer that de-serves repeating to all who are members of the BCCI member clubs. The main purpose of the BCCI is communication, a venue for member clubs to attract membership from those within the community with an interest in LBC’s but don’t know what clubs are out there or where to go to source parts, or cars. BCCI thus is charged with advertising our hobby. Within that advertising is the commu-nication of member club events and as support to those events a cost-effective insur-ance program. For the MSCCC our yearly dues / insurance levy are about $350 or less than $3 per member – great value for the MSCCC, Morgan cars, and the LBC hobby. In total the BCCI represents over 2000 British Car enthusiasts from across Canada.

An update… Our +8 had her wiring “refurbished” in preparation for a new life “down un-der”, wheels have been painted, straps added to the hardtop rear window (don’t want another blow-out at speed), and a “road pan” created in place of the “front bumper / air-dam”. The wiring refit involved removing about 50 feet of useless wire and, with the aid

THE MORGAN SPORTS CAR CLUB OF CANADA NEWSLETTER MAY 2006

of about 100 tie straps, taming the remaining wiring so it looks more like a harness. We also went through our “Morgan stores” to dispose of those bits not part of the +4 kit sent out to Vancouver. Only thing left to pack is an old TR4 valve cover – perhaps a “racer” for the southern valve cover race series.

The dry warm April in Toronto allowed some break-in time for the new RPI 4.6. Good news is the engine is extremely willing and tractable… bad news (as per Martin) is it if frightfully fast. We’ll see… that new V6 4-seater looks very attractive and is available in Australia!

We will be departing Toronto and Canada about July 10. We’ve had a great time with the MSCCC Central Canada group (as well as friends from Van-couver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Calgary, London, Ot-tawa, Montreal, & Halifax). We would especially like to recognize those who have helped to keep the core of this club going – all the Beers: Audrey (we miss her), Reg, Jenny, Steve, Martin, and Donna; Ray & Mary Shier; Alan & Marlies Sands; Peter & Heather McCowan; Tom & Lynda Van Zuiden; Desi & Bill Benet; John Collins; David & Paula Farmer; Phil & Elaine Fisher; Jeremy & Gill Harrison; Stu & Ria Harvey; Alan & Kathy Lytle; Don & Joan Martin; Ken & Pat Miles; Brian & Brenda Morgan; Glenn & Rene Nigh; Peter & Doro-thy Pfahl; Mike & RoseMarie Powley; Hendrick Rens; Henry Tutton; John & Sharon Roden; Ray & Liz Stevens; Chris & Gayle Taylor; Malcolm & Brenda Taylor; Ron & Yvonne Theroux; Rod Wilkinson; and Neil Young with a mention to other members we’ve lost – Audrey Beer, Ed Burman, Greg Kaufman, Brian Ruhmor.

I’d be remiss without the mention of several friends – especially Jacques Gallien from Belgium; Valentin Tanase from Romania; Alan Marsh, Ed Gieger and Ed Zielinski among many others from the MCCDC group; Lorne Goldman from eMOG; many from the MOG NW group in both Canada and the US, all the Morganeers in the Sydney Aus-tralia group, the New Zealand Morganeers, and many others I’m sure I’ll get static for missing! We’re not gone or forgotten, just changing addresses… watch for us at Mor-gan events “downunder” and as we make return trips to North America and Europe. The 100th anniversary of Morgan is coming up – we hope to be there! And, of course, we’ll be working to offer a Morgan “tour of Australia” sooner rather than later. For those who want to keep in touch, take note of the email address above. Thanks to all in the MSCCC, all the Morganeers world-wide who’ve become friends. Keep in touch.

Auburn, Indiana, June 8-9-10

We now have nine rooms booked for the Auburn, Indiana Run scheduled for June 8th, 9th and 10th.

There are still 3 rooms left on reserve so call The Auburn Inn at 1-800-953-6287.

The room rate is $89.00 U.S. per night and includes breakfast and two complimentary drink tickets. The hotel and its amenities can be seen at www.auburninn.com.

The plan is to leave Ancaster at the 403 at 8:00 AM on June 8th and travel to R.M Restorations in Blenheim. We will spend approximately one hour at RM viewing their inventory and shop. There is a small charge for the R.M tour. We will drive to Wind-sor from Blenheim and stop for lunch prior to crossing the border.

An alternate route has been suggested by Malcolm Taylor that gets us off the turnpikes and on some nice country roads that shouldn’t add a lot of additional time to Auburn.

Friday we will drive the rally route to Grabill, Indiana provided by Ken Long of the Morgan Owners of Ohio Group. The route has been carefully selected to feature great driving roads, a historic covered bridge and gorgeous countryside. We will stop for lunch in the Amish town of Grabill and eat at Elias Ruff. Grabill is an authentic Amish town with a must-see gen-eral store and antique shop complex. Friday after-noon can be spent in downtown Auburn viewing the court house or touring one of the museums listed below.

Saturday we will visit the Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg Museum at 9AM until noon.

There are no details for Saturday afternoon but any of the venues below are an option.

The Lotus Club of Canada, in association with VARAC, presents the second AnnualGrid Day SessionsMosport International RacewayThursday June 21, 2006

Last year’s Grid Day was such a success, the Lotus Club of Canada is pleased to announce the turn of this fun-filled lapping day at the challenging Mosport track. Fees will be between $175 and $200 per car.

Lapping will be drive-at-your-own-pace with designated passing zones. In an attempt to keep the spirit of VARAC, we hope to field cars that could be described as vintage or unique. As this is the VARAC Festival Test Day, we will have the opportunity to view vintage racing machines at rest and at full tilt. We will not be sharing the track with them. There will be track marshals, medical support teams and sweep trucks at our disposal. We are arranging for licensed instructors to be available for in-car train-ing. If you are interested enough to put your name on the provisional grid or have questions, please feel free to contact us.Greater Toronto Area – Stephen Rodger – [email protected] / Montreal – Claude Gagner - [email protected]

Notes From The West Ken Miles([email protected])

The last Sunday in April dawned with the clear blue skies that have been so apparent for several of the last runs. The Mor-gans of Muehlings, Blakes, Powleys, Poveys, Frasers, Theerouxs, Dickson, Miles, and Rennie along with Theroux’s Tiger and the tin tops of Robb, Burkholder and Bill Hayter met at the Holiday Inn on Mt Seymour Parkway in North Van-couver. After coffee and kicking of tires we left the parking lot and proceeded west along the Upper Levels Hwy. until we turned off at the Cypress Bowl Road. We drove up the moun-tain and parked at the main scenic look out. (Picture of some Morgans attached) After visits to the loo and looking at the scenery, we remounted our beasts and retraced our steps to the Upper Levels Hwy. and continued west to Horseshoe Bay where we exited the Hwy. and turned east on Marine Drive.Shortly after tuning east we drove into the parking lot of Thun-derbird Marina to visit the Peter Welch collection of MGs. For those unfamiliar with this collection of approximately 30 cars, it consists only of MGs, mostly prewar and rare models restored to Pebble Beach standards and then basically stored. Some have been shown at Pebble beach and have done very well. If you are out in Vancouver and of-fered the chance to go here do not miss it.After spending about an hour reviewing the collection and studying the new ones since we were last there, we returned to our cars and continued east on Marine Dr. to the Ma-plewood Pub for lunch. The “Al Allinson Last Supper award” was won by John Rennie. Morgan drivers are no longer upset about being last to get their dinner but enthusiasti-cally eliminate the others who get their dinners first. ( Remember each driver and navi-gator throw a quarter in the cup and the last person served gets it.) Laurie Fraser won the “Perpetual Turn Signal Award” for leaving his signal lights on for a mile. (Come on Laurie you are driving a Plus 8 with self cancelling turn signals)Western Morgan owners are presently engaged in preparing their cars for the annual ABFM at Van Dusen Gardens on May 20th. This event is generally well attended with up to 45l Morgans showing up and up to 600 English cars in total. After the awards there will be a Barbeque at Win Muehling’s house. (604-299-2425 if any happen to be out this way.) The following weekend (May27th, 28th) the vintage car races at Mission are on and we will be meeting at the Colossus theatre complex on the east side of 200th St north of Hwy 1 at 9:00 AM leaving at 9:30 AM on May 28th. The is a fun event and worth going to if you are out this way.

Who saw Norm Mort’s article “in the Morgan tradition”, Toronto Sun, May 7? OK so it isn’t considered a national newspaper so… your old Hog Mogger made the call and got permission from Norm to reprint the article. Norm has been an MSCCC member for some years, writes great articles, and does a good job at Morgan appraisals. Those attending British Car Day in Kingston can have a talk to Norm, maybe even get enough time for him to have a good look at your Mog. The Toronto Sun article discusses Mor-gans in general, Audrey Beer’s +4 in particular – what a great machine!

Speaking of articles, Classic & Sports Car April 2006 has an article on Morgan 4’s (cyl-inders, that is… not seats although 4-seaters are mentioned). Written by the Editor, James Elliott with the help of Morgan Main Dealer Richard Thorne who supplied a range of Mogs from early 30’s through current. It is a good read.

MSCCC member’s 4-cylinder cars have seen a lot of action over the winter. I under-stand Meagan, Ray & Liz Steven’s 4/4 insisted they move from the east end of Toronto to the west end to be closer to the action. Glenn Nigh got a bit bogged down in the build of Rene’s Toyota powered 4/4 over the winter. Put it aside to build model airplanes we hear! Could it be Rene isn’t pushing him hard enough to get that car onto the road so she can show the locals what true class looks like?? Speaking of Glenn’s Morgan – the +4 is still available. Should be a great near-new car for someone interested in both a looker and a tourer. Looker and tourer – sounds like Pat & Ken Miles “new” +4 DHC now on the road and turning heads in the Vancouver area. And last, as mentioned Steve Beer has his 67 +4 Super Sports (the real McCoy) back on the road! Still has the patina of a 30 year old car but Steve & Jenny will be attending events “in style” this year. Over the years Steve has collected new bits for the SS – wings, body are up in the raf-ters, frame was there but ended up used on a customer’s rebuild however we under-stand this gem will finally get it’s promised rebuild… just not quite yet as Jenny’s +4 4-seater rebuild is at the front of the rebuild line. Oh, yes… Steve’s 3-wheeler will be out this year, after a full ground up restoration!

Ground up restoration. Martin seems to have been looking for work this winter. Or was it practise, experimentation, and creation of a rolling billboard he can write-off as a busi-ness expense? A clean-up of his +8 ended up a full rebuild and repaint. He tells me he has over 3000 hours in the paint alone! Yes, it looks it… watch out at MOG36 as this +8 could trophy as best on the field.

CMC Motors has an order for a new Morgan! A loophole (sic!) in the import regs ex-empts “racecars” from the regulations and rules so a new Roadster developed for the UK race series is on order for a Canadian customer. No word on who it is or if they plan to “drive” it to the track!

Remember… it’s a “rumble of Morgans” whenever we get together. Make it happen!

It was great to see Bob Tescione all the way from Rochester, New York. He is working on his Morgan.
