INTRODUCTION
There is a chance that our Maxwell family are descended from the MAXWELLS OF CARLAVEROCK through the lineage of
Archibald Maxwell born 1745 Greenock possibly son to JOHN MAXWELL of BREDILAND (see note at end of document)and his wife Margaret Arthur.
Until proven otherwise, and for the following reasons, I have kept my research "starting point" at Archibald's marriage to
Lillias IVER in 1778 and their descendants for whom we have a great deal of documentary evidence.
Further questions must be researched and answered before we can categorically say we are descendants of the MAXWELLS
OF BREDILAND and therefore descended from the MAXWELLS OF CARLAVEROCK.
1. How did our Archibald born 1745 Greenock end up working as a mere "Sailor" (not a Mariner or Master Mariner) if
he had descended from a prestigiously titled family. It is difficult to believe that the family of his wife Lillias Iver
would allow this match to take place especially as her father was Merchant in both Portsmouth and Edinburgh. At
this point I will add that there is mention of Archibald being a "Mariner" on the birth entry of his son Archibald born
1787.
2. Early naming patterns are not conventional in some of our families and do not help especially when tracing the family
name of "Cornelius" down through the lineage. Unlike the family name of "Archibald", I have been unable to find the
original source of the name "Cornelius" within any of the families.
3. How did our ancestors end up as mere Coalminers and ordinary working class folk if we are indeed descended from
a titled family?
Certainly all the evidence we have found so far show that our roots lie with Maxwell of Brediland and Carlaverock but more in
depth research and further documentary evidence is required before we can positively state we are from Brediland stock
Maybe I am I literally "barking up the wrong tree" and perhaps some other family member can come up with some theories,
suggestions and evidence.
A very big "thank you" to all my Maxwell kith and kin who contributed their expertise and information, and without whom this
bibliography would be very sparse indeed.

Our own family ancestry starts with 1Archibald MAXWELL who was born in Scotland on 8 March 1745 in Greenock,
possibly to a John Maxwell of Brediland and Margaret Arthur (click here to see note). Archibald was a sailor possibly living
in 2Greenock at the time he met his future wife Lillias IVER.
1778 Town Map of Greenock - a very busy shipping port at this time
1 It is extremely likely that Archibald is a descendant of Maxwell's of Brediland - (See Notes at end of document about
Archibald) 2 Greenock, south west of Scotland and only 27 miles from Glasgow - In it's heyday, was a very busy shipping port from
where merchant and passenger ships sailed to all parts of the UK, Europe and the rest of the World.
OUR MAXWELL LINEAGE
5
FIRST GENERATION
Archibald MAXWELL married Lillias IVER on 12 September 1778 in 3Middle or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew,
Scotland. (As per LDS and Scotland's People cert.)
Lillias IVER, was the daughter of 4David IVER, a Merchant and Isobel FOGGO, was born on 31 October 1752 in
Edinburgh, Midlothian, and baptised on 2 November 1752. Info from birth cert from Scotland's People.
How and why Lillias married a Sailor is puzzling, especially since she was the daughter of a Merchant in Edinburgh, unless
Archibald was more than just an ordinary Sailor. The baptism entry shows that one of the witness to the christening was a
John Foggo a Journeyman Wright (possibly he was the brother of Isobel Foggo)
Since Archibald and Lillias married in 1778 it is highly probable that they had children before Margaret Maxwell, the first
recorded daughter was born in 1785 but to date we have found no further children within this family.
Lillias and Archibald MAXWELL had the following children:
+2 Margaret MAXWELL (1785)
+3 Archibald MAXWELL (1787-1848)
+4 John MAXWELL (1789- )
+5 Alexander MAXWELL (1792- )
2. Margaret MAXWELL, (2nd Generation) daughter of Archibald MAXWELL and Lillias IVER, was born on 26 April
1785 in Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland. Info as per Family Search - parents given as Archibald
Maxwell and Lillias Ivar! Margaret was baptised on 1 May 1785 in Middle Or New Parish, Greenock.
3. Archibald MAXWELL, (2nd Generation) son of Archibald MAXWELL and Lillias IVER, was born on 2 August 1787 in
Greenock New or Middle, Renfrewshire.
Birth cert from Scotland's People shows:
Archibald, lawful son of Archibald Maxwell, Mariner and Lillias Iver his spouse. Baptised 12 Aug 1787
Greenock.
Archibald married Christian or Christina RAE on 26 June 1813 in Gorbals, Govan, Lanarkshire when he was 26 (as per
Scotland's People). On his marriage entry Archibald, at the age of 26 stated he was in the 5Stirlingshire militia but he also
worked as a coalminer. Christian or Christina RAE, was the daughter of a Coal Huer (sic) 6James RAE (1767-bef1873) and
Sarah RAE (1767?-bef1873), and was born on 11 December 1795 in Gorbals (as per Scotland's People)
3 Greenock was divided into 3 parish at this time - West, the Middle or New, and the East parish
4 David IVER OR IVUR was a Merchant in Portsmouth, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. Info extracted from birth cert
of daughter Lillias [Scotlands People]. His occupation of Merchant in Portsmouth is also shown in his Marriage Entry.
David married Isobel FOGGO on 9 April 1749 in Edinburgh, Midlothian. Original marriage entry from Scotlands People
shows 9th April 1749 David IVUR Merchant in ?Portsmouth & Isobel Fogo of the deceased John Fogo late ?Write in St.
Andrews.
Isobel FOGGO, daughter of John FOGO OF CARNBEE (1674?- ) and Hellen BELL ( - ), was born from 1695 to 1722 in
Possibly Carnbee, Fifeshire. She and David IVER OR IVUR had two following children: Charles IVER b. 1750 and Lillias
IVER b. 1752
5 From 1802 to 1881 Stirlingshire was regimented with the militias of Dumbarton Clackmannan and Kinross. In 1881 the
regiment became the 3rd Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) See "End Note" for more information
about the Stirlingshire Militia. 6 James Rae married Sarah Rae on 17 Feb 1793 in Barony, Glasgow. James was the son of James Rae and Agnes Mann and
Sarah was the daughter of John Rae and Agnes Gibson
6
In 1841 the census shows that Archibald, his wife Christina and children, Agnes, James, Archibald, Margaret and William
were iliving at
7FireWorks, Gorbals, Glasgow.
Archibald died at the age of 60, from Consumption (tuberculosis) on 25 March 1848 in Gorbals. As per Scotland's People.
Christian or Christina survived Archibald by a further 25 years and continued to live in Govan with her children. She died at
the age of 81 on 15 August 1873 at 185 Uries Row, Glasgow from general debility (old age). The death informant was her

Middle or New Parish, Greenock and baptised there on 29 July 1792 in Middle or New Parish (as per Familysearch.org)
6. Ann[e] MAXWELL, (3rd Generation) daughter of Archibald MAXWELL and Christian or Christina RAE, was born on
24 December 1819 in Gorbals, Govan, Lanarkshire and was baptised on 2 January 1820 in Gorbals.
Ann married twice - First to Andrew RAE on 15 September 1838 in Gorbals and second to George JACK on 31 December
1851 in Gorbals.
Andrew Rae was a coalminer born circa 1820 in Glasgow and had died between 1849 and 1851. The census for 1851 shows
that Ann was living with her children in Uries Row and was a widow working as a Provisions shopkeeper.
Andrew RAE and Ann[e] MAXWELL had the following children:

Colliery . The village was known locally as The Fireworks consisted of several miners Rows set astride Cathcart Road
between what are now Allison Street and Calder Street.
7

on 6 May 1849 in Marchtown Church, Strathbungo, Pollockshaws, Glasgow (As per
Scotland's People)
After the presumed death of Andrew Rae, Ann Rae (nee Maxwell) married George JACK a Coalminer and son of John JACK
and Janet BEVERIDGE, who was born in 1820. George was a coalminer who died of "Bodily Injuries from falling off
Crane handle at Coal Pit" on 23 February 1858 in Rutherglen Rd., Glasgow (possibly at Dixon's Fireworks). At the time he
was living at 143 Uries Row, Gorbals, Glasgow. George Jack died half an hour after the accident whilst being taken home.
His death was registered by his brother in law Robert Maxwell. George was buried in 1858 in Southern Necropolis, Glasgow.
Curiously there was no inquest held about this death.
Ann[e] died of Intestinal ulceration on 14 April 1888 in 185 Uries Row, Hutchestontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire aged 68.
Her death was registered by her daughter Ann Rae (as per Scotland's People)

On 17 January 1868 Agnes died from bronchitis and heart disease at 86 King Street, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.
After Agnes' death, Thomas Lee married Marion WATSON (NEE FERGUSON).
Thomas died on 27 November 1879 in 27 Farmeloan Road, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. The cause of death on the certificate
was Lumbago and sciatica for 5 months (a rare cause of death today). The informant of his death was John Watson, John
Lee's stepson..
Thomas LEE and Agnes Liddell MAXWELL had the following child:

11 Hanningshaw was a small row of whitewashed miner's cottages on the west side of Rutherglen, bordering Polmadie and
Glasgow. The cottages were owned by Dixons Ironworks and then by the nationalised Steel Industry and the Coal
Board who rented out the cottages to miners. These cottages were demolished around 1936/1937 to make way for what
is now the Toryglen Housing Estate - Info supplied by Jean Nelson who remembers visiting these cottages when a child.

to a William
Davidson who died in 1891 and 3rd
to William D. BLACK on 14 March 1895 in Hubbard, PA., USA.
Following information received from Mary Lou Mariner (descendant) regarding Archibald and Margaret
"14 March 1895 Margaret married for the third time, William D. Black, an engineer with the Youngstown Stamping Co., by Rev. Geo. J. Williams. She was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church in Hubbard.
In Margaret’s obituary she is said to have had five grandchildren from three of her daughters.
Christina Maxwell (her dtr) and John SWARTZSWELLER had two,
Sarah Maxwell (her dtr), who married Harry O. Palmer, had two boys,
and Janet Maxwell (her dtr), my grandmother, married to Hugh McFee, had one child living.
Strathbungo grew up as a small village built along the Pollokshaws Road, one of the main arteries leading southwards from
the centre of Glasgow, adjoined by the Camphill Estate, now part of Queens Park. The village never achieved burgh
status and was annexed to Glasgow in 1891.
Strathbungo developed as a crofters and miners village in the early 18th century. By the end of the century, over 35
families were living in the village and weaving had become the principal occupation.
In 1859 development of a residential suburb to the south west of Strathbungo began, when nos 1-10 Moray Place were
built to the design of Alexander Thomson. The other terraces (named, as was Moray Place, after the protagonists in the
Battle of Langside fought nearby), Regent Park Square, Queen Square and Princes Square (later renamed Marywood
Square), formed a private estate, exclusive enough to have gates. This part of Strathbungo was designated a conservation
area in 1973. In the 1890s Charles Rennie Mackintosh lived at 27 Regent Park Square.
By the 1870s tenement buildings had started to appear, and with annexation to Glasgow in 1891 building proceeded
apace.
Strathbungo railway station opened on 1 December 1877, and closed on 28 May 1962.
Strathbungo railway station opened on 1 December 1877, and closed on 28 May 1962.

Peter Rae was a Coalminer born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire who married Helen Jack born c1806 in Govan, Glasgow.
9
Margaret was buried on 29 June 1909 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Hubbard, PA., USA. Row 26, Space 54, a single lot with no marker. Marriage information and other info regarding Wm. Davidson supplied by Mary Lou Mariner. In 1888-92 Margaret and her two daughters were living in Youngstown at 635 Erie St. with John Swartzsweller, who was married to her daughter, Christina. Christina had a tumor and died in 1890. She was buried 2 Nov. 1890 in Oak Hill Cemetery. In the 1900 census, Margaret states that she has had 5 children, but the “how many living” column is left blank.
Margaret died 26 June 1909 of stomach cancer while living at 122 E. Front St., a boarding house but in the paper referred to as the family residence. Her husband lived elsewhere but Sarah, who was divorced, lived with her. I could not find a divorce for Margaret. In 1908 Margaret lived with her husband, Wm. Black, at 101 Pike St. - a house her husband owned. She was also buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, from home, on 29 June 1909, Row 26, Space 54, a single lot with no marker. [This grave was not near Christina’s. Christina’s is a single grave with a very nice marker. Margaret’s has no marker at all.] King Funeral Home told me that her funeral cost about $45. and her daughter, Sarah, paid for it $1.00 at a time but there was still $15.00 owed. I didn’t pay it!"
Margaret RAE and Archibald MAXWELL had the following children:
+33 Helen MAXWELL (b.22/9/1859 Uries Row, Govan - d.16/1863)

12. William R. MAXWELL, (3rd Generation) son of Archibald MAXWELL and Christian or Christina RAE, was born on
16 June 1838 in Glasgow. William, aged 13, was a 14
Drawer in Coal mine in 1851 which was a very dangerous job.
13
See also Waugh family tree on ancestry.com for full details of the Smith family
14 A hurrier, also sometimes called a coal drawer or coal thruster, was a child or woman employed by a collier to transport the coal that they
had mined. Women would normally get the children to help them because of the difficulty of carrying the coal. Common particularly in the early 19th
century, the hurrier pulled a corf (basket or small wagon) full of coal along roadways as small as 16 inches in height. They would often work 12 hour
shifts, making several runs down to the coal face and back to the surface again. Some children came from the workhouses and were apprenticed to
the colliers. Adults could not easily do the job because of the size of the roadways, which were limited on the grounds of cost and structural
integrity. Hurriers were equipped with a "gurl" belt – a leather belt with a swivel chain linked to the corf. They were also given candles as it was too

at the time.
By 1891 the Aitken family were living at 188 Wolseley St, Govan, Glasgow as was Cornelius Maxwell who by now was
married to Isabella, their daughter.
15
Cornelius emigrated from Glasgow to USA in 1895 aged 31 with his wife Isabella Aitken his two children Andrew and
Cornelius and his brother Archibald and sister Annie.
The following information has been kindly supplied by Bill Maxwell ([email protected]) a grandson of Cornelius':-
"Cornelius became a naturalized citizen of the United States on May 12, 1900 in Allegheny County Pennsylvania.
Cornelius was a Coal Miner and then Minister/Foreman of Steel Mill in USA. Cornelius died in 1938 in Coatesville,
Pennsylvania, USA.
In his youth he had ,we presume, various occupations. It was learned he worked as a coal miner so this might account
for the listing on the marriage document as a laborer. He was Married at age 24.
In Scotland he had become discouraged with the low wages. He was quite intelligent and ambitious and of course
goal oriented. He knew the time had come for some changes in his life..
Cornelius knew some friends in the United States who had emigrated previously.
The couple saved their money for several years and finally made the decision to make the big move.
The family now consisted of Cornelius , Isabella, sons Andrew Aitken and Cornelius John.
They left the homeland, accompanied by his brother Archibald and sister Annie and arrived late in the year 1895 with
the hopes of a bright future as their friends had arranged for employment in Patterson N.J.
Archibald and Annie moved to western Pa. in an area round Donora .
Cornelius' first job was working in a nail mill in the Patterson area. He was thankful for the opportunity to work in
the new country.
This was short lived as the desire to move took the family to Munhall Pa. to work in the steel mill which was a branch
of U.S. Steel Corp. It is assumed the thought came to Cornelius that a fellow Scotsman named Andrew Carnegie was
successful in the steel business so he might as well start on the ground floor .
He did that literally as the first job was in construction/maintenance.(brick & masonry). The entry into that position
was made a little easier due in large part to his experience in Scotland with construction. (Bridge building and
housing repairs.)
The old adage of a new house brings a new child came true as Richard Livingston Maxwell was born in 1896.
1898 brought another move to Homestead, Pa. to work in the steel mill, and of course another child, Samuel Garrett
Maxwell .
Two years later ,1900, brought another job and another child, Joseph Gallup Maxwell in Whittaker Pa.
The Scottish word of mouth communication brought some information about a job opening in Sharon Pa.(This is now
known as Farrell). Each move convinced him he was bettering himself and providing for his family.
Another job and another son, William Francis Mason Maxwell was born in 1902 and daughter Anne Murdock was
born in 1903.
The year 1905 brought about another job in Clarion Pa. and another daughter, Jeanette who died in the same year.
Late 1906 or early 1907 the family moved, for what would be the last time, to Coatesville, Pa. Work was available
with the Midvale Steel Co. in South Coatesville.
1908 brought another child to the family, George Theodore Maxwell. as they were living in Rock Run a small
community north of Coatesville along the Brandywine Creek. The subsequent moves into Coatesville took them to
430 Valley Road in the West End, to a South First Ave home owned by Lukens Steel Co. The final move came as they
purchased a home in the city at 215 Walnut Street as well as the house at 213 next door.
In Midvale Steel Co. Cornelius was advanced to the position of foreman of the Construction/Maintenance
department.
This was ideal for him as it was in his line of work, construction of buildings, roads, bridges and tunnels.
16
Legend has it he was involved with the building of a tunnel over the roadway in the area of what is now known as
Newlinville road, South First Avenue and Spruces community. Currently First Ave is called Buck Run Road.
The tunnel was built over the roadway to support a road to be used by the "slag" dump trucks travelling from the
Open Hearth south to the dump.
The tunnel became the victim of progress and poor maintenance and was torn down in the 1980's. Cornelius worked
for the steel mill until the 1920's.
It was in this period of his life he had the opportunity to run for public office. He was elected Alderman in the Third
Ward of the City of Coatesville. He served for twelve years and was highly respected for being stern but fair.
This foray into politics opened an opportunity to serve as a county committeeman.
During his political career a "friend" encouraged him to invest in a business of selling a new car being
manufactured, The "Near" car. This was a three wheeled vehicle. Unfortunately the business failed and he suffered
quite a financial loss and he had to sell the family homes at 213 and 215 Walnut Street to cover his debts. The family
continued living there as renters.
It was a difficult period in Cornelius' life after that and perhaps contributed to his death in 1938.
Some other interesting facts to now finish the life of the Patriarch of the Maxwell Family in America:
In Scotland his passion was playing soccer. In school and after school as he played on a professional team .
When he came to Coatesville he was involved with a form of a youth league. His coaching, playing, refereeing as well
as his community involvement in addition to his work ethic was symbolic of the drive and determination that brought
him to America to fulfil the dream of success.
Spirituality did not escape him as his wife encouraged him to accompany her to church. As in everything in life when
involved, he did his very best to excel.
He had a photographic memory and in reading the scriptures he remembered every passage. When he went to
Sunday School he enjoyed sparring with the teacher when there was
a question to be resolved.
He and most of his sons belonged to the Iron Rose Bible of which he
was a charter member.
His death in 1938 did not end the Maxwell influence in the area as
his descendants remained and became quite active in many civic
organizations, churches, fraternal associations, fire companies, and
a host of other activities."
Cornelius died from a heart attack in 1938 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania at the
age of 71 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery.

NOTES ABOUT ARCHIBALD MAXWELL BORN 1745 IN PAISLEY
In order to try and establish the parentage of Archibald, married to Lillias IVER we studied the traditional naming patterns of
the Maxwell and IVER families. However in neither case, could we find any ancestors, or their spouses, who first used the
name "Cornelius" in the family.
Archibald Maxwell, was born 8 Mar 1745 Paisley, Renfrewshire and baptised on 10 Mar 1745 in Paisley. Copy of the
original baptism certificate shows that Archibald's parents were John MAXWELL and Margaret ARTHUR.
Margaret Arthur was born 25 June 1722 and was the daughter of Archibald ARTHUR and was born in Abbey. This is the
only entry we have found for the Arthur family of Paisley and it would seem that Margaret and John Maxwell followed the
naming patter of Maternal grandfather first then Paternal grandfather, then after the mother.
John Maxwell and Margaret Arthur married on 6 April 1744 in Paisley Burgh or Low, Renfrewshire as per copy of the original
marriage entry from Scotland's People.
John Maxwell and Margaret Arthur had four known children
(all copies of birth entries obtained from Scotland's People):
1. Archibald Maxwell born 8 March 1745 Paisley and baptised 10 March 1745
(This is possibly the Archibald who married Lillias Iver)
2. John Maxwell born 25 Jan 1747 Paisley and baptised 29 January 1747
3. Margaret Maxwell born 21 Feb 1749 Paisley and baptised 23 Feb 1749
4. Edward Maxwell born 25 Mar 1751 Paisley and baptised 31 March 1751
5. James Maxwell born 26 June 1753 Paisley and baptised 28 June 1753
Copy of the original birth/baptism entry (see below) for the above John Maxwell shows that John was born in 5 Juy1715 in
Brediland Abbey, Renfrewshire and baptised on the 10th July 1715. This entry reveals that his father was John MAXWELL
of Brediland and the baptism witness were a Gavine and James Maxwell.
There was also a daughter Agnes Maxwell (sister of Archibald) born to John Maxwell of Brediland. Agnes was baptised on 6
September 1719 and again the baptism witness were Gavine and James Maxwell.
John, Gavine and James MAXWELL were all descended from Hugh MAXWELL of Brediland. The Maxwells of Brediland
date from the year 1488 and are mentioned in the history of the Maxwell families as follows:
MAXWELL OF BREDIELAND, & MAXWELL OF MERKSWORTH, are said to be a branch of the Maxwells of
Caerlaverock. The last-mentioned John Maxwell of Bredieland's grandfather was Gavin, who married Catherine Hamlet, a
daughter of the family of Roughwood, by whom he had Hugh, his son and heir, who married Janet, daughter of Rowan of
Dumbreck, by whom he had three sons; 1. John, the last mentioned by Crawfurd; 2. James; 3.Gavin.
Semple, the next historian of Renfrewshire, after Crawfurd, mentions that the Maxwells, of Bredieland were a
branch of the Maxwells of Carlaverock ; and Robertson, in his continuation of" Renfrewshire," says that the last
male of the eldest branch, was John, eldest son of Hugh Maxwell, of Bredieland who left only two daughters : one of
those coheiresses d. s. p. ; the other, Janet, who succeeded to Bredieland, and married her cousin-german (i.e. first
cousins, with same grandparents) second son of Gavin Maxwell, of Castlehead, entailed the estate upon heirs male,
in 1710: Gavin Maxwell, of Castlehead, was youngest brother of Hugh, of Bredieland. James Maxwell, was the
second son of Hugh Maxwell, of Bredieland, acquired the lands of Merksworth,
39
If this is our Maxwell lineage then it proves that our lineage is descended from the Maxwell's of Brediland who in turn are
linked to the MAXWELL'S OF CAERLAVEROCK.
According to the Scottish naming convention, usually the first-born son was named after his paternal grandfather and
second-born son after his father. Sometimes however this pattern was broken and occasionally we find that the order was
reversed in that the first born son was named after his maternal grandfather and the second son named after his paternal
grandfather or his father. The same pattern existed in the female line in that the first female was usually named after her
maternal grandmother and the second female named after her mother or paternal grandmother etc. etc.
MAXWELL OF BREDILAND OR BRAEDILAND COAT OF ARMS
MAXWELLS OF BREDILAND
There are no fewer than five baronetcies held by members of the house of Maxwell; namely, those of Pollok, Calderwood,
Cardoness, Monreith, and Springkell. There are also numerous and influential junior members of the family, most of them
settled in the southern counties of Scotland, such as the Maxwells of Munches, Broomholm, Kirkconnell, Brediland, Parkhill,
Dargavel, Breoch, &c.
20BREDILAND HOUSE
Brediland House was the home of the MAXWELLS of BREDILAND, who had held lands in Renfrewshire from as early as
1487, and Brediland Estate since at least 1580. The family descend from the Maxwell's of Pollok. In 1700 this house boasted
ten feather beds, a going clock, a loom, and In the loft above seventeen loose floor boards! The family owned four horses, nine
cows and one calf, and thirty sheep. Wealth indeed! The house was single storey rubble built, with swept attic dormers, crow
stepped gables and thatched roof with a square stair tower, a possible later addition. The house was occupied until about 1960
and was eventually demolished in 1976. The location isn't known.
From a description of Abbey Parish - an estate, with a mansion, in Abbey parish, Renfrewshire, 1½ mile SW of Paisley. A
pottery, for the manufacture of coarse earthenware is on the estate.
This is the old farmhouse The cottage was the oldest house in Paisley, . built 1704 and demolished in 1976

This is the modern Brediland House in the 1950's. The photograph came from Ken Inspire, a student graduate with Babcock &
Wilcox Ltd.who stayed there from June 1951 till July 1953. The estate stretched from Tantallon Drive to Greenways Avenue.
The house was probably at the Greenways Avenue end on the hill. It was purchased and demolished by Leech Homes around
1983, not being a listed building.

As stated on page 4, how and why Lillias married Archibald Maxwell, a Sailor is puzzling. If Archibald is indeed descended
from the Maxwell's of Brediland (and from all the evidence this is a strong possibility) then it is sad to know that this branch of
the family ended up as ordinary working class folk but again - that's life!
FAMILY OF LILLIAS IVER MARRIED TO ARCHIBALD MAXWELL in 1778
Records reveal that Lillias Iver (wife of Archibald Maxwell b. 1745) was born on 31 October 1752 in Edinburgh. Her parents
were David Iver or Ivur and Isobel Foggo. David was a Merchant both in Portsmouth, England and Edinburgh. On 9 April
1749 he married Isobel Foggo in Edinburgh.
Isobel Foggo was the relic of John Fogo of Carnbee in Fifeshire and Hellen (sic) Bell. John Fogo is recorded as being a
journeyman Wright (possibly a shipwright) and was born in 1674 possibly in Carnbee. John and Hellen Bell married on 7
November 17695 in St. Andrews & St. Leonards, Fife and produced three children one of whom was Isobel born sometime
between 1695 and 1722.
The first child born to both David Iver and Isobel was Charles Iver was born on 22 January 1750 in Edinburgh and was
followed by our Lillias on 31 October 1752 and Janet Iver born 23 September 1754 both in Edinburgh.
Returning to the marriage of Lillias and Archibald we have been unable to find any children born between 1778 (the year the
couple were married) and 1785. This is a substantial 7 year gap before their first recorded child Margaret was born. There is
a strong possibility that more children were born prior to Margaret in 1785, but so far we have found no evidence to support
this.
Again we could not find a regular naming pattern from either the "Iver" or "Foggo" families.
INTRODUCTION
There is a chance that our Maxwell family goes back to the MAXWELLS OF CARLAVEROCK through the lineage of
Archibald Maxwell supposedly born 1745 Greenock to John Maxwell (born in Brediland) and his wife Margaret Arthur.
4. How did our Archibald born 1745 Greenock (supposedly to end up working as a mere "Sailor" (not a Mariner or
Master Mariner) if he had descended from a prestigiously titled family. It is difficult to believe that the family of his
wife Lillias Iver would allow this match to take place especially as her father was Merchant in both Portsmouth and
Edinburgh.
5. Early naming patterns are not conventional in some of our families and do not help especially when tracing the family
name of Cornelius down through the lineage, apart from the name of Archibald which is prevalent within our
treelines.
6. How did our ancestors end up as mere Coalminers and ordinary working class folk if we are indeed descended from
a titled family?
Certainly all the evidence we have found so far show that our roots lie with Maxwell of Brediland and Carlaverock but more in
depth research and further documentary evidence is required before we can positively state we are from Brediland stock, or am
I literally "barking up the wrong tree". Perhaps some other family member can come up with some suggestions and evidence.

i Information regarding the Stirling Milita by Ian A. Ramsey:-
"Here is a little info about the Militia in Scotland with particular reference to Stirling Militia which I researched some time
ago. Hope this helps.
The Napoleonic Wars (1793 to 1815) engendered the creation of Militia during the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth
centuries. Parishes were liable to provide a small number of men for training. These men were initially drawn from the most
able bodied men. Thus lists were drawn up of those eligible from which a ballot was made for compulsory service. (So national
service is not a 20th Century concept). If the chosen men were not willing to serve in person then they were required to find
other men in their stead as substitutes. In 1793 the government proposed Scotland should raise a Militia force due to the war
against revolutionary France. However public hostility caused the Scottish plan to be laid aside. However serious threat of
invasion in 1797 enabled the government to carry it through. The Scottish Militia Act of 1797 was designed to conciliate the
public in every way. Only 6000 men were to be raised, there were many exemptions, substitutes could be provided, and service
was only for the duration of the war plus 1 month and only men between 18 - 23 were to serve. Nonetheless outbreaks of
disorder arose all over the country. The schoolmasters, who were the only people thought capable of producing the lists from
which the ballot would be taken, were terrorised. Lists and papers were seized and destroyed. The Duke of Montrose,
responsible for raising the Stirlingshire Militia, arrived in Edinburgh at midnight on 23/8/1779 to report a general outbreak in
Stirlingshire. There were riots in Ayrshire and mass meetings were held on Galston Moor. The government used both
persuasion and repression to overcome these riots by persuading the gentry that the riots were a dangerous radical revolt and
sent in the regular troops to support them and protect their property as they had done so successfully in Ireland. Also great
stress was laid on explaining the Act to the people. Notices were posted on all church doors and the Lord Lieutenants issued
proclamations. To attract recruits the proclamations mentioned the limitation of service, the right of disabled men to a pension,
and the (relative) comforts of a soldier's life. They claimed a private's pay of 1/- per day and all found was superior to that of
labourers and many tradesmen. They also mentioned that ex-Militiamen were entitled to practice any trade in any corporate
town without paying fees.
In the Stirling archives there exists the original Stirlingshire Militia Letters Book into which were copied all the letters
pertaining to the Militia. In a letter dated 18/3/1803 there is the letter received from Parliament addressed to the Duke of
Montrose ordering him as Lord Lieutenant to carry into execution His Majesty's commands with the least possible
delay. At a general meeting of the Lieutenancy of Stirlingshire it was fixed that "the Militia of Stirlingshire . . . . . . . shall
assemble for being embodied, at the Courthouse Stirling, on Thursday the 7th day of April next". A letter giving details of the
assembling of the men of the Militia was sent to all the local newspapers on 18/3/1803 including the Glasgow Courier, the
Evening Courant, the Edinburgh Caledonian Mercury and Advertiser. The men were to assemble either as principals or
substitutes or be treated as deserters."
