Press release Maximum performance for stainless steel The Walter AG has expanded the Proto·max™ milling cutter family with a new specialist cutter for stainless steel The solid carbide end mills in the Proto·max™ family from the competence brand Walter Prototyp stand for maximum machining capacity. The variant for machining steel and the variant for machining hardened materials have already lived up to this claim. The new model for machining stainless steel is matching the success of its predecessors. According to Walter, the Proto·max™ Inox offers an average performance increase of 50 percent when machining stainless steel in comparison with conventional, universal solid carbide end mills. Particular features that are exactly attuned to the ISO M material group are responsible for this enormous performance jump. The four-edged maximum cutter has two internal helical coolant channels to keep the operating temperature at a constant level, and also to remove the chips reliably and thereby ensure high process stability. The tool is therefore able to deploy its full capacity on machines where internal cooling is combined with external cooling. The new TAA coating with a TiAlN base and an optimized micro geometry counteract the typical wear mechanisms of stainless steels. Another feature of particular importance: In order to achieve low vibration running, and consequently long tool life and high-quality surfaces, the tool has unequal helix angles, i.e. 35 and 38 degrees. A further innovation is to inscribe the code letter M on the shank which stands for the ISO M material group. This inscription is intended to help the user to immediately identify the primary application of the tool. The Proto·max™ Inox is the first choice wherever valuable materials from the ISO M group are being machined and high machining rates are required at the same time. Examples can be found in certain areas of general mechanical engineering, in medical and food engineering, and also in aerospace engineering. Whether full grooves of up to 1xD c or side milling up to 2xD c , the Proto·max™ Inox is ideally equipped for components with these sorts of requirements. Walter supplies the mill in the diameter range 6 to 20 mm, with or without corner radii (R0.5 to R4).

Maximum performance for stainless steel

The Walter AG has expanded the Proto·max™ milling cutter family with a new specialist cutter for stainless steel

The solid carbide end mills in the Proto·max™ family from the competence brand

Walter Prototyp stand for maximum machining capacity. The variant for machining

steel and the variant for machining hardened materials have already lived up to this

claim. The new model for machining stainless steel is matching the success of its

predecessors.

According to Walter, the Proto·max™Inox offers an average performance increase of 50 percent

when machining stainless steel in comparison with conventional, universal solid carbide end

mills. Particular features that are exactly attuned to the ISO M material group are responsible

for this enormous performance jump. The four-edged maximum cutter has two internal helical

coolant channels to keep the operating temperature at a constant level, and also to remove

the chips reliably and thereby ensure high process stability. The tool is therefore able to deploy

its full capacity on machines where internal cooling is combined with external cooling. The new

TAA coating with a TiAlN base and an optimized micro geometry counteract the typical wear

mechanisms of stainless steels. Another feature of particular importance: In order to achieve

low vibration running, and consequently long tool life and high-quality surfaces, the tool has

unequal helix angles, i.e. 35 and 38 degrees. A further innovation is to inscribe the code letter

M on the shank which stands for the ISO M material group. This inscription is intended to help

the user to immediately identify the primary application of the tool.

The Proto·max™Inox is the first choice wherever valuable materials from the ISO M group are

being machined and high machining rates are required at the same time. Examples can be

found in certain areas of general mechanical engineering, in medical and food engineering, and

also in aerospace engineering. Whether full grooves of up to 1xDc or side milling up to 2xDc,

the Proto·max™Inox is ideally equipped for components with these sorts of requirements. Walter

supplies the mill in the diameter range 6 to 20 mm, with or without corner radii (R0.5 to R4).
