THE MAUIACCELERATOR PROGRAM

The Maui Accelerator Program (MAP) is the rst food-in-dustry business accelerator program in the state of Hawai‘i. The UHMC Maui Food Innovation Center is developing this program to allow local food entrepre-neurs the opportunity to participate in a business incu-bator activity that is geared towards the special chal-lenges and opportunities of the food industry. A cohort training model will be employed to create a supportive community of fellow food entrepreneurs with added exposure to a diverse group of organizations and agents who can help them succeed. Between January and July 2016, MAP will conduct two 8-week cohorts of 10-participants each. The cohorts will receive training in food safety, best manufacturing prac-tices, industry trends, business planning, marketing, nutritional analysis, packaging, nancing for food busi-ness and export regulations. Participants will work closely with mentors and coaches to prepare a pitch presentation, using the Business Model Generation approach to strategic planning. The program will culmi-nate in a one-day entrepreneurial networking event

that showcases the cohort through a competitive pitch to a panel of judges and a diverse group of industry members including angel investors and venture capital-ists, food companies, wholesalers and retailers, and other potential partners and customers. Native Hawaiian, women and minority business owners are encouraged to apply.

This program is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Hawai‘i Strategic Development Corpo-ration, County of Maui, and UHMC.
