For our Master’s project we have chosen to work on a fragment of the city of Mulhouse. The aim of our project is to open up this part of the city, which is currently has no link to the surrounding urban fabric and is monofunctional. The site, situated 3 kilometers away from the city centre, is actually occupied by the spinning mill named “DMC”. Only a few buildings are currently in use on this 24 hectare site. A large number of the existing buildings are no longer functional. There is a huge potential that can be harnessed by reusing the industrial heritage. Moreover, we noticed that this site is surrounded by primary schools, secondary schools and high schools. Thus, we wanted to centre our area on the theme of PEDAGOGY and ANDRAGOGY, for young people as well as adults.

First of all, we organized the urban planning using logic of layers such as networks, green spaces, vistas, etc. The latter are superimposed in order to compose a complex and rich cityscape. Originally, the buildings of the site are placed on an orthogonal grid magnified by the “cardo and decumanus”. These can be defined as the orthogonal meeting of two linear roads which characterized the structuring axes of ancient roman cities. In order to break this rigid layout, we decided to add other layers with other directions.

The presence of a “green corridor” provides a promenade and becomes a pedagogic support which links two schools and consists of a variety of landscaping elements such as shared gardens, greenhouses and parks.

Urban rules The new functions are spread across the site with several centres. The cultural centre consists of a recreational sports facility and a learning center. The artistic centre comprises dance and music studios and exhibition spaces under the sheds. Finally the academic centre has a botanical institute as well as an innovation research centre. Other functions such as housing and offices are distributed on the entire site.

We also used a number of urban planning rules and guide lines. For example, the base of any new construction aligns with the cornice of the existing sheds. Another rule is the maximum height of the new constructions which corresponds to the height of the industrial chimneys.

To further emphasize the theme of pedagogy and andragogy; we chose to develop a learning center for the architectural scale. This learning center is situated partly in two industrial buildings. The latter are 230 meters long and 30 meters wide with huge open levels that are punctuated by columns. In these segments we chose to insert a cinematheque as well as exhibition spaces.

The library of the learning center is situated in a third volume that is placed diagonally on the existing buildings. The new volume cantilevers over a square and acts as a visual signal in the cityscape. The orientation of the new building has been chosen as it offers a vista on the city center.

1st Price for the «Stub»

The Agency of Alsatian’s Tourism asked the students to create a little house (25m²) with a regional identity, on the opposite of mobile-homes for campings.The conception of the building is based on the idea of the familiar room which is found in every traditional alsatian’s house and called the «stub». This room is the meeting place of the family, both welcoming and convivial. So, our little building is composed by a module where there is the central space, the kitchen and the bathroom; this one is linked to other units including alcoves with beds and relaxation areas. The building fits to the three areas composing the alsatian’s landscape (mountains, vineyard, plain) by the frames of the windows and the general shape of the «stub».

Built on the path of the Botanical Garden of Farm Cove, the pavilion creates an event along the banks offering a view of the famous Opera House and Syd-ney Harbour Bridge.The purpose of this exercise is to design an enclo-sure from the softwares Rhino and Grasshopper software to make models at different scales: 1:100 and 1:5.

The software «Grasshopper» helped to develop a structure made of arches coveres with a perforated skin composed of alveolus. The models made of wood and perspex have been laser-cut and assembled in the workshops of the faculty.

In this project, it has been decided to gather together the three parcels into one to create a single building containing three units. Our “clients” were a couple of elderly, a young couple with children and students. The purpose of the discussion was to create public and share areas while maintaining an essential privacy to everyone.The common room, on the ground floor at the corner of the building, is accessible from the street and from the kitchen of the cou-ple of elderly. These ones do the meal for both the children and the students, in return, the family and the students do the cleaning of the and take care of the common gardens.

The 9 meters thick buildings are placed on the plot boundaries to maintain the alignment of the street and to define an inner courtyard as a meeting and leisure place. This inner court-yard is found again around the urban fabric of the neighbourhood.The ground floor houses common areas and shops overlooking the busy street. A bicycle repair shop is located on the corner of the buildings, at the junction of two roads.The flats, accessible by large enough walkways to be suitable for housing residents, are all double-oriented and possess a balcony or a loggia.The roof of the south building is used as a solarium and as a garden by the residents, there are also a communal kitchen and an outdoor summer lounge.

This house is designed for apassionate of plants. Its split-level compo-sition is articulated around a core where curl stairs. The living room, kitchen and bedroom face south-west and enjoy the view of the garden.An indoor greenhouse with exotic plants grows on two levels. Another one is located in the kitchen for aromatic herbs and large bay-windows in the bedroom are arranged to expose bonsais. In the central core is also located a bookcase and a room for all the garden tools.

The house was built for a couple of nature lovers. It stands at the north end of the enclosure, down the slope, in order to clear the more green space on the south. The patio brings light to the north where there is bathroom and the entrance. The living room and the kitchen face the south to enjoy the sun and the green space. A tim-bered volume overcomes the house: a large bay window frame the mountains, seen from the bed.

The «Plan-Campus» set up in Strasbourg aims to rethink the campus of the Espla-nade with the creation of a Learning Cen-ter. Close to the tram and student canteen, this student house acts as a sign at the entrance of the university district. With a central atrium where the circulation in spiral is spread from down to the roof, the Lear-ning center hosts many functions such as a cafeteria, a bike rental, the campus radio or many library workrooms in the form of «bubbles». The archives are thought as a negative space, this place is dug to create work and leisure alcoves.

The exercise of this semester was to plan a cinematheque in the area of Darlington, close to campus and the Redfern railway station. In relation with cinema, the pro-cess of designing the building is dictated by the viewing of three excerpts of films whence are highlighted strong and recur-ring themes.So, the guide words REVEALING, TRANSI-TION and FRAMING will help to qualify the spaces.

Revealing the building results in a main cir-culation, framed on both sides by a series of vertical planes and voids allowing the light to reach the central part of the building.This light acts as a call to the user who won-ders if the space extends beyond the walls.

The notion of FRAMING put the emphasis on the industrial buildings of the site. The sheds made of bricks are an important witness of the industrial past of the neighbourhood, thus they are «accidentally» highlighted by a combination of horizontal and vertical planes creating a dynamic frame. Indeed, the user must be at a specific location in the building to see the heri-tage buildings.

Finally, the effect of TRANSITION is defined as a succession of open and narrowed spaces along the way in the cinema-theque. From the street, the user crosses these areas of tension between the two masses of the cinema’s rooms or on the contrary, he arrives in an open to the sky and wider place, like a breath in the building.

My concept is based on the idea of meanders which could be find in the old state of the Rhine before this one was piped. I wanted to reveal the history of the site by the project.

What emerges from the idea of meandering is an entity composed of several arms wandering on the ground, surrounding islands and forming pockets.

The project is located on the southern part of the site, near the mouth of the canal and on the continuity of the north-south-walk along the Rhine. It relies on the bases of shops and car parks upon which there are housings and offices, the complex CAL/3EL therefore confronts its cultural and sports program with these functions to engage the residents and users of its architecture.The idea of continuing public space “in” the building results in a ramp unfolding from north to south, which gives access to housing and offices in the upper part as the Skyline in New York. All populations come across, thus creating a strong social mix. On this ramp are also outdoor pools overlooking the Rhine. Accessible for everyone, the pools reflect the idea of gravel and water pocket which are around the Rhine

The project aims to create a signal from the bridge by putting an element to the horizon that would emphasize the entrance of the city of Kehl. The base is an impor-tant concept in this place because both the residential tower and the old house get one. As for these two buildings, the base defines a «territory» which can get rid of the place and allows the buildings above to have their own logic.The project is positioned parallel to the Rhine independently of the other two buildings, it fits closely the topography and supports an object covered with corten-steel, the auditorium.

The school spreads itself on both sides of the bridge to recreate an urban bridge, it also gives importance to this one in order to make it exist as a real element of the French-German “ Jardin des Deux-Rives”.

The project is based on the theme of plots in a form of straps that existed before the bombing of the Second World War and which were characteristics of this part of the medieval city. The establishment of two buil-dings perpendicular to the river are connec-ted by a glass element, a sort of porch, defi-ning a «courtyard» open and facing this river.Angular shapes remind of the pictu-resque neighborhood, the wood pa-neling wrapping the buildings gives importance to this cultural building.The «cross-exhibition» creates an inte-resting perpective through the two buil-dings and directs the user to the recep-tion. The music rooms are all facing south, the teaching rooms have views over the river as well as the auditorium.

The natural light is used as a guideline for the project. The local is a place designed to promote the discovery of botany through artistic activities. This is a place where it is possible to understand both nature and culture through the study of specimen and where the practice of drawing will enhance this knowledge.The word on which is based the project is “clairière” meaning “clearing”. The word evokes the passage from a dark, closed, “capped” space to an open and lighten space

The user enters into a small volume at the corner of the main volume. Once inside, we successively pass from a dark and low entrance to a higher second space with diffuse light to finally arrive in a central space with a maxi-mal clearance. This space, where there is the big table, is defined by a series of storage, the exhibition wall and a basin.

The Wacken district, in the north of Stras-bourg, hosts the European institutions close to the garden-city Ungemach and at the confluence of the rivers the «Ill» and the «Aar». The aim was to create a «Park-system» from the botanical garden of the Neustadt to the fringes of Schilitigheim: the continuum of landscaped areas is the way to connect urban areas, to «inject» vegeta-tion in these very mineral areas, but also to give a real quality to the banks while streng-thening the presence of water.

The new neighbourhood in the north is dense but open to give the people this space formerly closed and not facing the water. In the manner of Christian de Portzamparc, blocks do not overlooked by the alternation of masses and gives a high porosity thanks to their fragmentation. The hearts of these macro-blocks host shared spaces or community gardens, frequently used by the inhabitants.

The urban project aims at including this site in the Rhine area, having an impact on the tri-national scale and thus offering a new image to the renewal of the port of Basel.The project also listens to the city and the existing buildings thanks to the development of multiple connections between these two entities.Our intervention is based on the principle of insularity, detaching a part of the site with its territory through a new channel. Thus, the created island is both autonomous and linked to its context.Urban forms are heterogeneous with the establishment of three types of building types. The multi-modal node in the center of the site spreads out the both sides of the river Wiese, the idea was to create a shared space and to promote alternative circulation modes.

The four-week internship at the «Agency 51» has allowed me to discover the architect’s job by designing a model of a pavilion (90sqm) in a valuable area, the «Quartier des Maraîchers» of Colmar. The 14 family terrace-housing provide a dense form of housing in this part of the city.

From the opera “Rigoletto”, it is about to do a scenography’s project for a performance in an Italian theater.

The different scenes take place in front of a “wall” made of doors, all differents, by which enter and go out the actors. The light effects, the small openings or the textures create various atmospheres that are applied to every moment of the play.

The castle of Thanvillé, many times transformed during centuries, takes on a homogeneous aspect with a great elegance. Nevertheless, at first glance, it consists of architectural elements of different periods. It is clear that the “French-style” windows of the main building do not appear as medieval openings, their size and their linter place formally their origin in the XVIIIth century. But an important part of the castle uses the language of the Middle Ages and of the Renaissance.

We notice the diversified geographical origin of the families since the construction of the castle in the XIth century, alternating between the Holy-Roman-Germanic-Empire, the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Lorraine. It is however difficult to conclude that the membership of such or such territory had an influence on the architecture of the castle because the architectural elements are also a “fashion”, a temporary tendency evolving according to numerous parameters.

Traditionally, the owners are free to build their castle according to their tastes while adapting itself to the new techniques. So, the castle of Thanvillé is a “lowland castle” possessing identical characteristics to those met in the Alsace’s area, at least in the general organization and in its outside aspect employment.

From the study of the history and by the resulting uncertainties or contradictions, a series of critical points were identified and then largely resolved by the method of building archaeology. The latter was thus fruitful because it allowed to enrich the historians publications.
