IMPORTANT: This activity is essential for your learning process and it is a requirement

for the evaluation of the Learning Evidence of Stage 3, therefore you have to do it completely and correctly.

Classification and symbolic of the chemical elements.

5

3. Read stage 3 of the textbook Matter and its Transformations and in the previously created document perform the following activity:

a. How are named and described the symbols of the chemical elements?

b. Write your findings about the origin of names of chemical elements.

4. Research in your textbook the classification of chemical elements and, in the same document, perform the following activity:

a. Make a comparative chart of the physical properties of metals, nonmetals and metalloids. Include five examples of each one of them.

b. Using different colors point in a periodic table the regions occupied by metals, nonmetals and metalloids.

Description of the periodic table5. Read carefully in your textbook how is organized the periodic table and

answer the following questions:

a. What criteria is used to arrange the chemical elements in the periodic table? Has it always been as we know it today?

b. What is a group A and how many of them are in the periodic table?

c. What is a period and how many periods are in a periodic table?

d. What have in common the elements of the periodic table that are in the same column? And what have in common the ones in the same line or period?

e. Observe the electronic configuration of the first 10 elements and their position in the periodic table. Is there any relation between both aspects?

f. From what criteria are the elements classified as representative, transition, internal transition or noble gases?

7

6. In the same document make a graphic organizer with the classification of the chemical elements according to their type, class and electronic configuration. It is part of the learning evidence of this stage.

7. Once answered the previous activities complete the table below for the examples presented in the first column.

Importance of the chemical elements

8. With your teammates coordinate to answer by e-mail or by any other social network the activity below.

9. Research in your textbook and other suggested sources about the distribution of elements in the universe, in the Earth’s crust and human body.

10. Make in collaboration a digital presentation online by any of these options:● Online document from Gmail. Watch Tutorial Google Drive● Document from Outlook, Hotmail or Institutional email: Watch Tutorial

OneDrive

The document previously created must consider the following aspects:

a. Distribution of chemical elements in the universe, in Earth’s crust and human body. Use the name and symbol of the elements.

b. Describe the functions of five elements in the human body; report their chemical symbol; classify them as metals, nonmetals or metalloids; make the electronic configuration of each element and then, locate them in a diagram of the periodic table

c. Indicate the effects that produce each one of the five elements described if they are present, if they are not or if they are in excess.
