Program Organization

Overview

This building is divided into three “lanes” of program connected by in between corridors or “saddlebags.” Public entry is mainly available through the public center lane, while the outer lanes contain more private areas. The hollow saddlebags contain openings to allow entry and vertical circulation.

As visitors enter from either end of the building, they first reach two of the most public program areas, the Dining Hall and Great Room. As they descend throughout the building, they reach the central courtyard and main open space which connects to the other auxiliary and private spaces.

While the location and circulation towards a space is always important, in this project every space’s physical qualities are specifically tailored toward its programatic needs.

Central Meeting Zone

Both the earth sinks and the precast panels rotate upwards to create a feeling of openness being outside while still being 30 feet underground.

Private Classroom

Both precast panels and earth are manipulated to form their own boundaries enclosing each space but still retaining one directional transparency.

Entry/Exit

As the precast panels grow and open up larger they also swoop down to lift visitors up and gracefully meet the ground level.

Connection/Circulation

The “in between” space is governed by the precast saddlebags which allow easy access to all program elements.

Outdoor Space

Though technically still inside, extreme openings caused by level shifts in the precast roof system create the illusion of being out in the open.
